There were NO cars in the parking lot in the middle of a weekday. Very strange and should have been my first clue something is off for an office with two vets available and no visible patients. Another clue should have been the "payment responsibility" disclosure they required me to sign before they would even look at my pet. In more than 60 years of pet ownership, I have never had to sign something like that before treatment. I brought my cat in because she had not eaten or had a bowel movement in seven days. After an exam and X-rays, I was told everything was fine and that she was probably pooping somewhere in the house. EXCUSE ME??? As if I hadn't already thought of that and looked everywhere myself. This is a cat who has NEVER done that in the 13 years I've had her. So, I left with no answers, no explanation for why my cat hadn't eaten in a week, no explanation for why she hadn't pooped in a week, and a $250 charge on my credit card. Apparently, at Island Animal Hospital, "everything is fine" is considered a diagnosis. And don't even get me started on the condition of the office. With the fees they charge, one would think they could afford to update the place. It looks like very little has changed since Dr. Moore was there nearly 30 years ago. When your pet hasn't eaten or had a bowel movement for seven days, you expect answers. Instead, I got a guess, a credit card charge, and was sent on my way. No wonder they are still taking new patients when every other vet in town is not. Do yourself a favor and look for another vet.

Only for doctor Berkovets!!!…read more ONE STAR. If I could give zero, I would. I brought my young Maine Coon here for a routine neuter. What followed after this "routine" procedure turned into a nightmare. About a week into treating the complications and problems that began after the procedure and subsequent treatment, the doctor actually suggested that I EUTHANIZE my cat. Immediately after surgery, my cat developed a severe cough. I repeatedly told the doctor about it, but in my experience, my concerns were simply brushed off. Within two days, my cat stopped eating and drinking, developed severe watery diarrhea, weakness and unsteadiness, and his temperature at the clinic reached a terrifying 107.3°F. Then came one injection and medication after another. What disturbed me most was that he was given two medications that, as I was later told, should not have been given together or so close together. I was left with the impression that the doctor simply failed to account for the previous injection before giving the next one. After that, my cat had around 11 episodes of vomiting, became severely dehydrated, and needed days of fluid therapy. His condition continued to deteriorate: high fever, vomiting, refusal to eat, major weight loss, gastrointestinal problems, and later serious breathing problems after aspirating fluid. At one point, my critically ill cat was left at the clinic overnight even though, to my understanding, there was no veterinary staff physically present there overnight. As an owner, I found that absolutely terrifying. I also believe his throat may have been injured during intubation because the coughing started immediately after the procedure, yet that concern was never taken seriously. I was also shocked by how outdated and disorganized this clinic felt. Records appeared to be kept largely on paper, getting complete treatment information was difficult, and I did not see a clear modern system documenting medications, injections, and the full history of what had been done to my cat. The most frightening part was that I kept bringing him back, kept paying, and kept trusting the doctor while my cat became weaker and weaker. Instead of a clear plan, clear explanations, and a serious attempt to determine why he was deteriorating, I eventually heard a suggestion to euthanize him. I brought in a young cat for a routine procedure. What followed was weeks of vomiting, dehydration, weight loss, breathing problems, repeated medications, and suffering. In my personal experience, the care was careless, chaotic, outdated, poorly coordinated, and deeply lacking in compassion. I will never trust this clinic with any of my animals again.

Terrible experience at Myakka River Animal Clinic in Venice with Dr. Dawn Spokowski. What started…read moreas a simple wellness visit turned into one of the most uncomfortable vet experiences I've ever had. During the first visit, she came off cold but recommended a follow-up for my dog's anal glands. At that follow-up, my dog was clearly in distress during the procedure, I even offered to hold him to help, but wasn't allowed, and the assistant holding him got scratched by my screaming squealing very uncomfortable dog. Then I was hit with a surprise $28 "difficult dog" fee that was NEVER mentioned before--even though his behavior was the same at the first visit. When I later asked for help getting my dog seen sooner for a surgery she said should be done ASAP, I was met with sarcasm--she literally compared my question to asking Publix to recommend another store ... like where is the compassion?? It only got worse. When I called to cancel my dog's upcoming surgery, she responded "we figured that." When I asked what that meant, she refused. I told her she is rude and she told me "that's usually what people say can't handle the truth." I said "maam what truth couldn't I handle??" She gave no answer ‍. Final straw--when I said I'd leave a review, she made sure to mention she had photos of her employee's scratched arm, which felt more like intimidation than professionalism. Dr Dawn Spakowsi is rude, dismissive, and lacks basic care her own staff if you ask me. Like why isn't your staff wearing a shirt with sleeves? 0/100 do not recommend Below are Facebook comments from others with similar experiences. SMH so sad.
