Despite loving Polish food I had never been to Lewandoski's Market until recently. I picked up a few six packs at Siciliano's and they were doing a partner deal where if you spent a certain amount at either business, you'd get a discount at the other. This was perfect as I was going on a camping trip and figured I could get some snacks and/or brats etc. at Lewandoski's. The outside of the market is cute and cheerful, and I was greeted right away when I came in. One of the owners told me about the history of the shop (they've been open in the same location for 100 years!) and pointed out some of their products. He even gave me a sample of their kraki, a cured meat that is delicious. I love that they have everything you need for a BBQ - meat, buns from local bakeries, condiments (lots of mustards), and more. I bought some hot links, kielbasa dogs, buns, pretzels, focaccia made by Wealthy Street Bakery, and some kraki dip. It was only about $30 after the discount which was awesome! I'm so glad I finally visited this NW side staple and look forward to going back again soon. read more

My family has enjoyed Lewandoski's over decades. I have fond memories of ordering from the deli and enjoying the meal especially at family gatherings. Friendly, knowledgable staff. Their signature sausage has a wonderful mix of seasonings. I love grilling the Kielbasa Sausage, then serving in a hot dog bun is a nice summer treat. Sausages are made fresh from their market. Smoked Kielbasa - great for appetizers. Meat Sticks - awesome for quick snack or to take on-the-go. Five Stars - "Traditional German Wiener" - my all time favorite. You can grill, sear or boil and serve hot dog style on a bun. So Goood! Grab some relish, mustard, condiments to enjoy with the sausages. I brought my 92-yr-old Aunt Pat in from Wayland & took her all over GR: to see homes, stores & places she hadn't seen in decades. Her first priority? Van's Bakery & the Schnitz Deli... but when we hit the West Side, she said "Oh, let's stop at Lewandoski's!" Aunt Pat was like a 92-yr-old kid in a candy store! Jerry & Jill were very gracious in helping us. Then Gary came out & introduced himself, saying he'd bought the store 6 years ago. She was telling Gary about ring bologna she usta get at 20th Century, but the new owner only sold thru GFS, & it was 5 pounds! (I think Aunt Pat was going "WTF - which I assumed was What The Frank - am I gonna do with 5# of bologna?") Gary took a ring outta the cooler & Aunt Pat was just thrilled! She only got 1 ring, now that she has a source in GR (me!) for her future needs at Lewandowki's! She left with a # of treats! Best sausage links I've ever had. So good, in fact, that I told my husband today that I do not plan on ever buying sausage links from anywhere but here again. Big store & name brand sausages always taste super salty to me, and I think the sausage links here have the perfect flavor! I don't know what it is about them, but I just love them! We purchased a pack at $5.49/lb, which I think is a good price for a local store. We used some for breakfast (of course), then I sautéed some with garlic and spinach. Ate that with rice and a fried egg...yum! The owner/staff here are incredibly friendly. We stopped by after eating breakfast at The Westsider Cafe, and they offered us some samples of meat. I can't remember what it was called now (sorry), but we bought half of a pound and ended up adding it to the charcuterie board that we made for my MIL and SIL. It was nice to have something new that isn't the usual salami/pastrami/prosciutto mix. We're running out of sausage, so I see another visit on the horizon soon! read more

I traveled back to Michigan from north Carolina to work on my dad's house and wanted to bring some kielbasa home with me. I picked up 15 lbs and I should have picked up more. I love their kielbasa, and they have a great recipe. The owner was kind enough to get my order already frozen for the trip. It smells so good inside the store, it makes you want to go in just for the aroma. We love your kielbasa guys, keep up the great work. Finally!! After years of eating their delicious food I was able to actually go to the market and savor all the ambiance and aromas for myself. My power chair was met by a kind customer who opened the door, and staff who were sweet and attentive asking if I could reach everything - already way ahead of the chain stores! - and offering me samples of their Krakowska, a delicious sausage style lunch meat. There was a nice variety of groceries in case your meat choices inspired some culinary treat upon arriving home. Traffic was light on the sidewalk going home. Brats, Pierogies and their own sauerkraut are about to die for BUT be sure to check for their revolving specials - today was POLISH STUFFED CABBAGE ROLLS (Golabki / Golumpy/ Golumpkeys)! And if you're really nice you get a smoked meat stick of your choice. Yum!! read more

Hidden gem in Grand Rapids. They have wonderful selection of sausage and it tasted amazing. Great place for polish sausage.

What a great place!! Everyone treats you like family, AND the owner works there and says "Hi" to everyone too. Very customer service oriented and let's get down to the nitty-gritt, their polish sausage is very tasty. It is well seasoned and keeps you wanting more; hence my second stop there today. I will be taking some with me out of state, but I always look forward to my return to GRR and the "Kielbasa from the corner" that awaits my return. Where do I even begin?! This place is full of charm and the best darn meat you find anywhere. Kielbasa ( both smoked and fresh) is top notch (my wife is polish-she should know). I am not a regular, but I stopped in on a whim. I was required to supply "something" for a Christmas meeting for tonight's John Ball Area Neighbors association meeting. So at 11:30 am I swing in and tell him I needed some sort of "toothpick" platter by 5:00. Without batting an eye they just took my name and said to return at five! So, I pick up this enormous covered platter with a barrage of sliced up meats and cheeses! Everyone there thought it was great and asked where it was from. I can't promise that they can prepare a platter that quickly every time, because this was a Wednesday - not a Friday. But they did it for me! And, by the way, they do take credit cars now. read more

just moved to the Grand Rapids area from Metto Detroit. Am somewhat disappointed with the lack of good meat markets in the area. That, and decent luncheon meat. That having been said, I give this place an 8 on the 10 scale. Friendly, decent prices. Pretty good fresh meat selection. SomewhAt disappointed in the lubcheon meat. But his homemade " Krokowska " is very very good. The German potato salad was very good, as is the Kielbasa. Love the location. Just wish they had space for a bigger variety . Comparing Meijer to Lewandoski's Market would be like comparing Antarctica to Hawaii. The markets meat is fresh in comparison, the experience from sterile to personal attention, the aroma alone is the reason to shop the market, and if you are shopping on a budget the market prices are far less expensive than the big stores and the market quality of meat products better. I am so happy to have a butcher shop right in my neighborhood! When we moved to the area a local butcher shop was something I really missed from home. They have a good selection of meats, including chicken, pork, and beef. The shop has a very family owned feel, and certainly is not fancy. The prices are reasonable and and the service is good. They do not take cards, so make sure you bring cash! read more

Bring cash or a check book because they won't take a debit or credit card. Great kielbasa. Saurkraut and pierogis are in a refrigerator, so you either need to know they're in there to shop for them, or ask someone working there where they are. I'd give Lewandoski's five stars because the food they sell is great, and it's a charming little store (it's a one-room place), but . . . I took my husband (he's from the Detroit area and loves Polish food) there for the first time last weekend. Heaven help you if you go on a Saturday and arrive at 2:30 or later! We got there at 2:20 and that was apparently a bad idea, too... They close at 3:00 on Saturdays, and when we arrived, there were several people waiting at the meat counter. A woman who seemed like an owner or like she was someone in charge looked out at all of us waiting to be served then said at the top of her lungs, "THIS IS THE WORST TIME OF THE DAY!" - it seemed she was angry because they were so busy half an hour before closing time. Seriously? Yelling about people spending money in the store?! Then she took a phone call and griped loudly about the woman on the phone calling in an order and wanting it waiting at the register when she'd arrive - she complained loudly about that for the whole store to hear, too. My husband joked made a joke about the woman calling in her order, and the woman behind the counter GLARED at him. The man behind the counter getting meat orders for everyone seemed like a really nice, jovial fellow, but that woman was horrible. read more

After a night of drinking on the Westside, I balance all of that alcohol with some protein by stopping at Lewandoski's Market (1107 Walker Ave). The market was established in 1948 and Victor Hill bought it from the family 26 years ago. He only buys USDA Choice Beef from Fillmore Beef Co. in Holland. He gets whole sides of beef and can do special cuts. You like your steaks 2-inch thick, right my pets? But Lewandowski's is known for it's kielbasa, which is made with coarsely ground choice cuts of pork and just enough fat for flavor and fresh garlic. They can make 3,000 pounds in a day and they sell 15,000 pounds for Easter. Christmas is only 10,000 pounds. The ladies behind the counter plied Poppa Steve with slices of German Wieners and spicy Hot Sticks. It was love at first bite. read more

I tried Lewandowski sausages recently. It was ok but I think I like the sausages at the meat store on W Fulton better. The Kielbasa meat quality was good but a bit salty which I think overshadowed the kielbasa taste. The wieners and hot links were ok too. I like the thinner casings. Although I like the other place's better other than their casings being thicker. read more
