This hike can be visited multiple times and never gets old. Time it right ~ when the tide is out the lower beach section is a beauty on its own. Careful to watch the tide coming back in otherwise a very difficult hike back for many. Pup friendly and please pick up after your pooch. *Parking is very limited so come early.

Using our flashlight on our phone, we explored the actual fort, built during World War II as a coastal defense. The fort is preserved well and you can go inside all the rooms and tunnels. There are also trails along cliffs lined with meadows and forests, offering beautiful views of the water. There are public restrooms near the parking lot.

We saw a bald eagle hunt something in the water and bring it to the beach, so it seems good for wildlife watching. The lighthouse is kind of underwhelming because of the size. There's multiple grassy fields and some picnic tables. Some people were flying kites when we were there because of the wind. There's also a dog bag station, which is nice to see at a state park. Regarding the fort, I didn't realize until later that there's an easy path up to the top without needing stairs and/or a steep route. Otherwise, I thought it was tricky going up if I could only use the thin metal ladders. Once at the top, there were multiple points that seemed iffy and unprotected from dropping down.

It is a great place to enjoy the beauty of nature and have quiet conversation with people you care about. On this last visit I brought my husband and dog. I always appreciate dog friendly parks. My husband really liked the bridge. He walked over it and took some photos. I was quite surprised at the amount of foot traffic but I understand why people love it. We visited some lovely beaches and explored the tide pools like we were children again. There is a lot of driftwood here if that's something that you enjoy. There is also art to be found. It really feels like there is something for everyone here. I am from out of state so for those of you who are visiting from afar, know that you can buy a discovery pass for $10 a day on site for any of the state parks you want to visit. In the instance of Deception Pass it's definitely worth it.

I made my way out to the beach and went walking and collecting driftwood and various stones. Views are gorgeous, the bugs weren't too bad at sunset and I had a good time seeing the bunny's come out to nibble on grass and the birds flying around.

There is a small parking area by the beach where one does not need a Discovery Pass because it is not technically part of the park, but is close enough to access the park grounds via foot. We park there and then I can go exploring on foot on the beach or traverse some of the trails through the woods. I was walking along the main trail during the summer in 2021 and found some blackberry thickets. The berries were big and juicy. So upon returning to my grandmother's house we found a pail and I brought it with me upon returning to the park and picked a few handfuls of blackberries. After picking the berries we got some ice cream at the grocery store and had blackberry-topped ice cream for a snack/dessert. Fun place to explore and collect berries for a sweet treat with grandma.

This is a generously spaced park where people are cordial for the most part. This would have been a 5 rating if not for a dog bite incident where the owner refused to be accountable for her dog biting my dog. We were there for 10 minutes when a large Rhodesian Ridgeback bit my girl as she returned a ball to me. No skin was broken on her back and my girl seemed OK so we moved far out into the park to get away from the biter. Twenty minutes later my dog was returning a ball and the biter appeared and bit again. Look out for this dog if you go there. The woman that owns the Rhodesian Ridgeback said we were not locals and that is why her dog bit my dog. Not a good excuse for bad behavior and no apology. If your dog attacks another dog, you're responsible and accountable period. My next message is going to Coupeville City Hall to ask if an occasional visit from an animal control officer might help remind owners that they're responsible and need to supervise their dogs. Otherwise, this is a fabulous dog park. Go here, your dogs will love it.

We came here with a relative who recently moved here and it was wonderful to walk around and talk along the beach... visit and catch up as we strolled up towards the lighthouse. It is spring so it was windy and a bit cold but with enough layers we were pretty comfortable on our short walk. Such a beautiful state park and definitely a "must" to visit while in Port Townsend!

There is a wonderful trail that loops around the beach, lighthouse and through many of the old structures. Sometimes, the narrow hallways are unfortunately flooded and there are some areas of garbage and vandalism but for the most part it's no impact on the experience. It's located next to a bunch of sports fields so it was busy when we stopped by. There's a fun tire swing, a pole to slide down, an interactive music toy, slides, monkey bars and so much more. Cute things to climb in and on. I love the military theme. It's close to a base so it makes sense.
