One of my all-time favourite bookshops, I remember as a kid when it was primarily a second hand bookstore and was upstairs, above the location it is now. So its been a firm feature throughout my childhood and adulthood. I would come here every week to buy a few second hand books, as I was such a fast reader. Many of the significant books of my childhood came from here - my first loves, as it were.
As other independent bookstores in the town have closed their doors, I'm pleased that Liber has just seemed to get bigger and better. The store is modern, and offers the latest texts. Unlike other chain stores in the town I won't bother to name, the staff know what they're talking about, and are always more than happy to help you make your selection. The second hand book section is no longer a significant feature, but they have the latest titles in every section - food, art, new releases, childrens books, and they have a dedicated Yeats and Sligo section.
Down the back of the store is Third Wave Music, where you can buy vinyl, record players, cds and dvds. A small but well curated selection of music, reflecting the tastes of its owner.
If I'm buying a book, I'll wait to come home to Sligo to buy locally - my loyalty is a direct result of the staff and the atmosphere the place creates. The branding is contemporary and I'm always proud to give friends the gifts of books, wrapped in a Liber Sligo paper bag.
