Liberty street is a great bar on mass ave, I love the environment with the lower romantic lighting and the selection of spirits. It had been awhile since I had been but it was great to get back and see people out and about enjoying themselves. We only stayed for one drink but it was a tasty well made gin martini, the friends I was with are big bourbon fans and they were impressed with the selection. Maybe this place had a strike against it already for me. I mean, this is the place that opened only after they kicked Yats out so they could open a restaurant. True, they did own the building and it was their right to do with it as they please, but it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Sometimes when a new restaurant joins the scene, the hype that occurs before builds the place up much more than it should be. I've read articles about Liberty Street over the last several months, and now that they're finally open, had a chance to give them a try last night. My first clue should have been that every other spot on Mass Ave was on a waitlist for a table, and Liberty Street's dining room was almost empty. My group all ordered differently. Some ordered appetizers only, some ordered appetizers and dinner entrees, and others (like me) just ordered an entree. This seemed to confuse the servers as at least one of the appetizers didn't come out until we had already started to get our checks and the end of the meal. I ordered the B2 meatloaf, which was recommended by one of the servers standing around waiting on customers to arrive. The meatloaf had a nice flavor but the sweet potato puree underneath it was too sweet. Other people had to send their food back to have it warmed up as it came out cold. Personally, mine was okay, but there were a lot of people who felt this would probably be their first and only time at Liberty Street. There seemed to be a lot of apologies and "We've only been open a week" comments flying around. Let's hope they get past those fairly quickly, or they won't make it on Mass Ave. read more

Checked out the new bar which was replacing an Indy icon. The space has undergone a complete transformation - I barely recognized the place. The bar is super classy without being pretentious. The mahogany bar is something to behold. The tunes are old-school blues. You could lose yourself in a bourbon here. If bourbon isn't your thing, there is plenty of craft beer local and non-local) to be found. I think this was a win-win for everyone involved. The previous tenant needed to upgrade to a bigger space, and now that they're in a sweet new location just up the road. I'll try the food next time. Stopped here for a drink with some friends after dinner. I've walked past this place probably 20 times and have never really noticed it. We saw they had a few tables outside. Extremely hard to mess up so I'd be concerned if it hadn't been good(haha!) The inside has exposed brick and lots of character. All the ladies were enjoying some drink they made up for us and it was actually pretty good. I had never been to this bar before even though I know I've passed by dozens of times. I actually give this place 4.5 stars. We arrived at 10:30 on a Sunday (opening weekend). It wasn't busy and we were helped right away. Thomas, the bartender was extra friendly and chatted it up with us as we sipped our prohibition era cocktails. The vibe of this bar is classy, like a flapper girl speak easy. The music played is classical and inviting. We had a clover club and a cacao 72% cocktails. Both delicious. This bar sells true cocktails. Not a lot of sweet, flirty mixtures. Many of the drinks are heavy, bitter, strong or all of the above. I haven't tried the food yet since the kitchen closes at 9 on weekdays. The menu is small but offers a variety for both vegetarian and meat lovers. I will definitely be back. I'd love to hang at this place on a busy weekend night. read more

Went into Liberty Street to check out the mahogany bar, and it did not disappoint. Upon walking in I felt comfortable w/ the atmosphere. The bar was classically decorated, and the exposed brick wall gave it an old-school feel. It felt very similar to Ball & Biscuit, w/ soft music and no TVs. A good place to have conversations and a chill spot to hang out. With a huge bar back comes a huge selection of liquor. I think you can order any drink you want at Liberty Street. They also have a decent list of craft cocktails, wines, and about 10-12 draft beers. The menu is limited to appetizers, small plates, and a handful of entrees. We ordered hummus and fried green beans. They were fine as finger foods over drinks. Liberty Street opened in early March, and as of right now there is little information about its menu, drink selections, etc. You have to physically go in to find out what they have. The place shows a lot of promise, and is in a prime location. I'd recommend going in to grab a drink, and maybe in time they will figure out what direction to take w/ the food. read more

I just wasn't impressed. A few friends of mine and I decided to check out the new restaurant on Mass Ave. Sunday afternoon/ early evening and there were very few people. Maybe it's just because their new. We sat checked out the menu and decided to skip food. Nothing looked THAT good. At least not for the price. I will say though that what I saw brought out to other tables looked much better than expected. So, we settled on just doing drinks. I had a beer. They have a pretty good beer list. A friend of mine tried to get their signature drink but they were out of one of the ingredients. Overall the service was sloppy. The Bartending was slow given how few people were there. Liberty Street is one of those places that didn't have an instant impact on me, but each time I go, I grow more fond of it. Mass Ave is full of blingy, modern, lit-up, maybe even gimmicky bars with two or three exceptions. Liberty Street is understated. They are the modest, strong silent type with the smoldering good looks, and they really have a lot to offer. The atmosphere is laid back and classic with low lighting and rich dark mahogany wood. They have an ample craft beer list along with craft cocktail mixology that rotates. I've had several house concoctions that I've liked very much, but my favorite so far has been the Red Lady, which is a tasty apple elixir garnished with a caramel apple wedge. The bartenders are friendly and skilled at serving up a quality drink that is worth the Mass Ave price tag. Liberty Street also offers up live music and the occasional trivia night for some entertainment. This is the place grown-ups go to have meaningful conversations over quality drinks. read more

My parents took us to Liberty Street last night for dinner and drinks before a show. It started out as merely unimpressive: the seats were uncomfortable, our server wasn't knowledgeable about the food, and it took 15 minutes to get our drinks. We ordered a mix of apps, salads and entrees, and waited at least 45 minutes for our food, and each time we asked about its progress, the server said "they're plating it now." They kept putting us off, as we watched plate after plate of food being delivered to tables seated after us. So my dad left the table to find the owner and complain about our disappointment and how completely screwed our evening was, as we now only had five or ten minutes before we had to leave, and we still had no food. He returned, the food arrived, he asked for the check, and the server told us our meal was being comped. Then the server left our table and never once returned. We were thirsty, as our first round of drinks was long gone, and we had no water. We were hungry, finally feeling a sense of relief as we dug into our meals. But there was nothing remarkable about the food: rice that accompanied a bland steak tasted like Rice-a-Roni, salad was warm and limp and drowning in dressing, shrimp tacos had little flavor. Then suddenly, the owner appeared at our table. But Tammy Miller didn't approach us to apologize for our experience or empathize with our disappointment. We sat stunned as she stuck her finger in my dad's face--a full five minutes after their private conversation about our situation and with our table and the entire dining room in audience--and proceeded to berate him for complaining, telling him that if we ever returned, she would "kick [our] asses out of here." I was appalled. What started as unimpressive had turned horrific, our minds blown by her complete lack of professionalism. When we got up to leave, the server stopped my dad and told him that the owner changed her mind about comping our meal. To add insult to injury, she reneged on the only form of apology we received by deciding to charge us for her outburst and ineffective management, for an inexcusable wait, mediocre food, and an overall experience that spurs me to tell everyone I know how very much this restaurant--which replaced Yats, a beloved icon on Mass Ave.--deserves to fail. There are a hundred restaurants within 10 minutes of Liberty Street that are better in every way, so my advice is to steer clear of this disaster. read more

I consider my mind changed on this place! When I saw the empty seats shortly after opening, I was skeptical. I have been twice recently and tried beer, food and cocktails and have not been disappointed. They have a great beer selection, which changes periodically and I have enjoyed the two cocktails I have had there thus far! Bottom line: A long way to go to catch up to places like Libertine and Bluebeard. If you like Mesh, you will probably like Liberty Street. This market segment in Indy is getting very competitive, which I really enjoy. They're aiming for a relaxed dining experience with a strong bar presence. The menu sounds very inventive and includes local ingredients which is a big plus, but nearly everything that I tasted, including the turf-on-surf was boring. My cocktail which featured gin, st. germaine, and ginger beer was also disappointing. It wasn't well balanced and inviting, it was really pretty watery. Having been to Yat's many times I was really wondering how you could do a finer-dining place in the same space and it just doesn't work. There's something creepy about watching everyone's food coming out of the basement. It's not their fault, as the entrance to the basement is the first thing that you see when you walk through the door and you've got a great view of the doorway from most of the restaurant. The last nail in the coffin was service. They must have been short staffed because the servers looked like they were running crazy like chickens with their heads cut off. I got a sneak peek at Liberty Street last night, which officially opens today, and it is fabulous. The bar itself is gorgeous and definitely hits the mark on the feel of taverns past. We got a sampling of some of the dishes they'll be serving as well and we're going back tonight for more. They have a meatloaf that will make your mother blush! Woo, boy. And the pesto-ish sauce/foam/heaven/happiness stuff underneath the salmon we tried was one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. We thought the cocktail sauce with the shrimp could have used some more kick but we also lean toward flavors that smack you in the face. Now, on to the cocktails. Amazing. Andy (the head bartender, of Dorman Street fame) has seriously outdone himself. The Smoky Pearl is fantastic if you're in to Scotch. I personally am not huge on it but my partner is and he said it's the only Scotch cocktail he's ever had that he liked. It's definitely peaty but sooo smooth and complex all at one. I wasn't huge on the Cacao 72% but it did start growing on me as I drank it. I'm still working on liking dark chocolate myself so if you already like it, this is the drink for you. The cocao notes in this drink were wild, in a good way! It was interesting to try just to experience the different flavor profiles in it. The other one that stood out was the Cloverclub and wow, this one was my favorite. A gin drink that uses some raspberry liqueur on top. It tasted like a cloud. A little on the sweeter side than the other things we tried but not overly sweet. So good. Needless to say, I'm excited to go back tonight and try all the things! Their bar has crowds to the eyeballs, and Liberty Street has a table for you. Don't get me wrong -- there's lots of places I like to grab a drink on Mass Ave. But Liberty Street has the perfect balance between skillful mixology and straightforward delivery. The bartenders know their stuff but have no need to be pretentious about it. The wait staff was super friendly and offered some tips for ordering since we'd never been there before. I went with a Moscow Mule. It passed the first test because it came in a copper mug (the ones at Blackbeard do not and I hate that). It was also very well made and I have to say might have topped 1933 Lounge in my opinion of the best Moscow Mule in Indy. Stopped in Liberty Street on a Saturday night - almost everywhere else was full to the gills, but Liberty Street had an empty table so we took it. Overall, I thought this place was pretty good, although a bit pricey. Good selection of cocktails, although once again were a bit pricey. I opted for a Moscow Mule which was yummy and also came in a copper mug which made me happy. I also had the charcuterie plate which was damn good. That's what upped this review from a 3 to a 4. Highly recommend! You get to pick either three or five different meats and cheeses and it comes with bread and butter pickles, whole grain mustard, caramelized onions and toasted bread. We opted for gouda and cheddar cheese with pepperoni. Very, very good. If I came back, I would definitely opt for the meat and cheese plate again. I should mention that service was a bit spotty, but overall a decent place on Mass Ave. Not the best out there, but you could do worse too. read more

I was dying to go into Liberty Street. I'm not sure why but the look of it made me so excited to check it out. We went for after dinner drinks and I was so underwhelmed. There were only 2 other people in there so that was a little uncomfortable but not a big deal. Literally the first 5 things I ordered they were out of. I understand the drink menus aren't always accurate and you run out of stuff but seriously more than 2 or 3 and that's an issue. Needless to say we drank our one drink and headed out. Liberty street really is a hidden gem on Mass Ave. First off, let me say that this is not your crowded, touristy frat bar on Mass Ave. if that is the type of environment you are looking for, you are best to keep walking. But If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing atmosphere with great craft cocktails and beers, then liberty street is the place to be. My fiancé and I have frequented the place more than any other bar on Mass Ave. Their food menu is always changing, but I have yet to have a bad meal. Portion sizes aren't huge, so you are likely to finish feeling satisfied but able to continue drinking a beer or two afterwards. The last time we went, I had the BLT. Nothing fancy, but executed well. My friend, who was visiting from Madison, had the veggie burger. She later told us that it was one of the best veggie burgers she has had. My fiancé had the Mac and Cheese. It was simple and amazing! I may have stole a few (or several) bites from him. I ordered a draft beer and he had a gin cocktail. They were both great. Because we were traveling to multiple places, I did not order my favorite drink on their menu, which I like to call a Boiler Maker. It's a PBR and shot of whiskey- straight up. The whiskey choice constantly changes from their HUGE selection! I have yet to try the same whiskey twice. Best part- it's $6. The atmosphere of the bar is one that I really enjoy. Exposed brick, a huge mahogany bar, and NO TV! It almost feels as if you have traveled back to the 1920s. It is always clean, and they have live acoustic music sets playing throughout the week. I can't speak for their food as i've never had it, but they have a pretty good selection of craft beer. They tend to have beers that aren't the typical beers many trendy bars have. The selection also rotates a lot. There's plenty of seating (though there is some controversy on how they got so much seating) but it's hard to come here and no find a place to sit. It's not a big noisy bar with loud TVs. it's quiet enough to carry on a conversation or BS with the bartender. Good place for calming after work drinks. read more

We went here after our ridiculously large dinner bill. And we know this place isnt the cheapest but it isnt the most expensive and they make really good drinks. Like my gin and tonic actually tastes like it has gin in it and not straight tonic and lime. Plus half of their bar consists of bourbon which my husband is a huge fan of so that's another reason we like to go. He can have some of his bourbon that he can longer find to buy and for a reasonable price. For instance Blantons at the restaurant we had gone to before wanted $25 for a shot, liberty was only $12 or so. I went to this place opening week. I have not written a review until now because it was so unmemorable. What a disappointment. I waited a long time for this place to take over the old Yats space. As the time for the grand opening grew nearer, I noticed the outside was not getting a make over. When you walk in, not much as been changed from Yats on the inside either. A few lighting changes and table differences but that is it. Really? Talk about lazy. Already off to a bad start with atmosphere, the menu arrives. Many boring and uninspired options here. My girlfriend opted for a salad that was average but nothing memorable. I went with a steak option that was less than memorable. I could get a steak like this at Applebee's. We also ordered drinks and they were alright but nothing compared to say Libertine, Ball and Biscuit or any of the other mixologist places popping up. This place doesn't even have a website. What business in this day and age doesn't have a website? I had a hard time deciding between 1 and 2 stars here, but I really save the 1 star category for the places I'd rather starve than eat at. Therefore this place qualifies for 2 stars. With so many good options on Mass Ave, there is no reason to come here and I highly doubt this place will exist for much longer if it continues in this direction. read more

Came here last night for the first time for a friend's birthday celebration and was very very disappointed. The ambiance as people have have previously mentioned is quite nice however the service is extremely lacking. The only thing I would suggest is maybe having some more lighting as they seemed to actually dim the lights MORE as it got darker to the point where I couldn't even clearly see what I was eating. I'm hoping it may just have been our waitress who did not receive the proper training or understand how to take care of larger parties (we had 13 people or so). She came by probably 3 times within 10 minutes to ask for our drink order, brought the drinks 10 minutes later and then proceeded to disappear for about 45 minutes before coming back to ask about our food order. The food then took even longer to come out. No one came by to give updates or apologies. Additionally they happened to be out of calamari that night which the waitress did not seem to know as she had to come back after trying to put in orders to tell us. Now ordinarily when visiting a restaurant I have found that the waiters/waitresses start off by asking "have you dined with us before? just to let you know, we are out of _____ and ____ tonight." The worst part was getting our bills. We all decided to get separate checks to make it easier but she still had an extraordinarily difficult time. Some of us got our bills as expected but several people did not get any bill and she had to come by and ask if she had given them a bill yet or not. When specifically asking a certain shared dish to be put on someones bill she put it on someone else's bill. The food and drinks were pretty good and I would come back as a place to hang out, but I certainly hope I do not have the same waitress. At the very least they should work harder on training their staff. As a place that is replacing Yats and as a new restaurant on Mass Ave I expected them to be more prepared, especially as they need to establish a good reputation. Side note to mention, I realized this after I read another review, there is an extremely strong fryer smell. I didn't necessarily notice while I was there, but all of my clothing smelled terrible afterwards, had to throw them into the wash immediately. In my humble (and well versed) opinion, Liberty Street does the best Old Fashioned in Indy. The bartenders here are professionals, not just someone working a shift to pay for college; true mixologists. The atmosphere is inviting, unassuming and not the least bit pretentious despite it's elaborate bourbon and tap list. A beautiful chandelier hangs over the bar and sets the mood perfectly for the service you can expect. The space is much larger than you would anticipate, and I'll look forward to when the whole space is utilized. The owners are friendly (and often on hand), and are Indy natives and live and work in the community. The orgininal woodwork throughout is impressive, adding a certain degree of elegance which is welcomed to the sterile buildings going up on Mass Ave. I'd highly recommend Liberty Street, check it out, and order the Old Fashioned. read more

My friend and I entered just after 7:40 PM on 3/27/15. We sat down in the dining area, and we ordered two drinks, one each. After we received our drinks, we realized that a band was setting up and asked to move to a table in the bar area to avoid talking over the music. The waitress was very pleasant. We moved to our new table, and I tried my drink. It was awful. My friend's drink was pleasant. I had ordered the Clover Club (death's door gin, vermouth, Wilks & Wilson raspberry gomme, lemon, and frothed egg white), and I didn't know what it would taste like, but I didn't expect it to taste as it did. It tasted like I was drinking BBQ, mesquite, or even wood chips, an almost smoky flavor. I asked the waitress, and she said she would ask the bartender what gave it that flavor. I was told it shouldn't have that flavor, but that they would make me another drink. I certainly didn't want the drink I just tried, but my friend's drink was great, so I ordered it. She had the The West Coast Ammunition (sombra mezcal, fever tree ginger beer, ginger simple syrup, frothed egg white, and lime juice.) This drink arrived, and the waitress asked me to try it with a concerned look on her face. She then said she thinks it was made wrong. So I tried it, and it didn't taste anything like what my friend had shared minutes prior. This drink too had this smoky, wood chip flavor like I was gnawing on a grilled piece of meat. The waitress took it back to the bartender who was clearly very agitated and the owner then took it upon herself to make my original drink order. By this time, my friend had also tried both of my drinks and she said, "I think your drinks have mezcal in it. Mezcal is smoky." I said, "Well yours doesn't taste like that and yours had mezcal in it!" She didn't think she ordered a drink with Mezcal, but we went back to the menu and realized she had ordered a drink with Mezcal which didn't taste smoky, and I had ordered a drink without Mezcal, and both of mine (the original Clover Club and the request of one to match hers) tasted like smoky wood chips. We determined the bartender likely mixed up the drink orders making hers without Mezcal and mine with. Anyways, the waitress came back with the third drink, this time it looked like the original order of Clover Club. I tried it, and it didn't taste smoky! I was so excited! I thanked her many times, and she was pleased we were happy. My friend also tried my drink and said, "Oh yeah, much better!" This is where it gets BAD. The owner comes over and asks, "Did you enjoy your drink?" I replied very nicely with an apologetic tone, "Yes, thank you so much. It tastes much better---" and she cut me off with, "It's the same drink as before!" I was shocked. I replied with, "this drink does not taste like wood chips or smoky BBQ, and the other two did, even though they were different drinks." And my friend even vouched for that, but the owner continued to argue with us telling me that the drink I was sipping was the same as the previous two. She was so very rude and unprofessional. I will NEVER go back. As she walked away from our table, she proceeded to whisper to the bartenders that looked over at us whispering back. The waitress was pleasant. The owner was not. BAD SERVICE. This weekend was the first time we've been here since Liberty Street opened, and though we haven't yet tried their food (we'll keep that fifth star for a time we can try dinner here), their drinks were quite delicious! I had the Liberty and could not have been more pleased. These cocktails are well made and quality. The ambiance and noise level were both exactly what I was looking for with a group of six - low light, the ability for all of us to have conversations, and lovely historic pictures on the walls. Similar to many other places along Mass Ave, Liberty Street is overshadowed by many of the other bars and craft cocktails places along the strip. I remember the very first time I came here: it wreaked of stinky fish. I knew it was part of the launching of a new place so I have come back a time or two. Honestly, it's been many years since I've been back here if that tells you anything. The last time I was there, they loved to use egg whites in their drinks to make a frothy texture. Not sure if that's been changed in the last couple of years. A good place, but nothing significant enough that I would recommend this place to anyone along the Mass Ave strip, sadly. read more

My first visit was stellar, crafty ambience with a smooth and chill vibe. I sat in the bar room with a gorgeous mahogany toned bar. I loved the music that played during my meal. Good music makes good food even better. I had the Citrus Salmon with asparagus & roasted red potatoes (not on the menu) I asked the Chef to surprise me. The meal was dope! The salmon was full of flavors. Sweet & tangy come to mind. The staff was also pleasant. I think this is nice little spot with great potential. We were walking by to go get some food farther down Mass Ave but noticed this red corner was finally opened! I've been curious what it was going to be since the renovation started, so we dipped in to have a drink and a look. The ambiance is really cool. We were there on a Sunday afternoon so there was hardly anyone there, but I'm sure on a weekend night it would be really great. The bar was beautiful - it's massive and I can't even imagine how they got it in there. The bar stools were really neat as well, almost an art piece. The drink menu had some interesting options. I ordered a glass of wine because it was Sunday at 2pm and I wasn't feeling a crazy mix at the time. My friends all ordered unique drinks. One wanted to try the signature cocktail but they were out of a key ingredient. Fail. The food menu was pretty generic, but the food we saw brought out looked pretty amazing in comparison. We didn't order anything as we were on our way to dinner, but I would be interested to try some of the dishes. The bartender was our server and he was really nice, but not very attentive. He ordered our drinks almost individually - when one of us decided on a drink he went and rang it up, then 10 min came back and asked another person. It was awkward. I'm sure they're still working out the kinks, but for a Sunday with hardly any customers, I would have expected better. Overall I would suggest trying it out on a Friday or Saturday night for a better feel. read more

They have a "cocktail on draft" the "Liberty" -- perfect for an after-work refresher or mid-summer stroll event.
