My personal favorite is the painkiller - a delicious blend of coconut, rum, orange, pineapple, and nutmeg. It's served in a skull glass and tastes absolutely perfect. I had very high hopes coming here after all of the awesome reviews on this place, and I left a little bit disappointed, because I personally don't think my experience lived up to the hype. We came in on a Friday night at 6:30 with no reservation, and had to wait ~5 minutes for a table of two. We were sat at a high top at the bar, which we appreciated. Our server greeted us quickly, and checked in a few times throughout the night. Service was average, nothing spectacular but nothing to complain about. I had a hurricane to start off. Packed full of the good stuff, and one was definitely enough for the night. Appropriate price for what you get. This drink is what brought my review from a 2 for the food to a 3 in total. We started off with pork Bao buns. The bun was spongy, but somewhat dry. The pork lacked any sort of flavor, and the sauce on it didn't do much for me. The next part of the meal was the most disappointing for me: the curry chicken wings. Let me tell you- I was excited for these. These lacked any sort of flavor at all, and the only thing saving it was the ranch. The wings had a good crisp, but the sauce was lacking taste. I had the Shoyu ramen for my main. It was a pretty average bowl of ramen, but for the price, I expected more. The pork in it was flavorful, but the chicken in it was odd in my opinion with an unexpected herby flavor. Overall, service was average (but we appreciated getting sat fast), drinks were strong (and saved the meal) and the food was average. I love trying new ramen spots so I was excited to try out Strange Bird. I visited on a Sunday around 5:45 pm. You will definitely wait to be seated if you come at dinner time. We waited for about 40 minutes. They have a tiki bar vibe within the restaurant and definitely pride themselves on their unique alcoholic beverages. On this visit we didn't indulge in any speciality drink but by the look of it, people love them. My partner and shared a couple things during our visit. We ordered the gyoza, karage and the tonkotsu ramen. We ordered an extra side of noodles as well. I thought it was interesting that they offer the option to add on noodles but once I received my order I understood why. I would say portions are kind of light. I was happy that we added another bowl of noodles. The noodles were more of a thick cut noodle and I believe they are homemade. The noodles were not my preference but I was still interested in trying something new. The food was pretty good but I not sure if it on par with some of the other ramen that I have had. We weren't able to make a reservation because of the popularity but there were cute large couches and chairs to chill at while you wait with a cocktail or mocktail. Even though they were busy the wait was not very long and the host was so nice and I wish I could remember his name. Our server was so nice and kind and made great recommendations. Oh my. This is the kind of place that you visit with a special person, even if the special person is just yourself. It's intimate, the lighting is dim, the aesthetics are tropical and fun, the tunes are great, the service is impeccable, the drinks are creative, and the food is unbelievably amazing. The granular attention to detail at Strange Bird is not lost on me. This place is a winner. Strange Bird's nicely pared-down menu consists mainly of ramen and oysters. A couple of curries, some chicken wings, a salad and gyoza round out the menu. I had heard that the oysters were a must. In fact, earlier in the week, I read an article in Indianapolis Monthly that one of the go-to spots to eat oysters in Indy is Strange Bird. I found myself at Strange Bird not too long after that, and so of course I got the oysters! You can get them individually if you just want to try one, or by the half dozen or dozen. The oysters are delicious and fresh, and they come with wedges of lemon to squeeze over the top, plus a sorbet made of vinegar and tomato and other tasty things. A little dollop of the cold, savory sorbet on each oyster before tilting your head back to swallow the oyster was such a sensual experience. What a way to live deliciously. I was enjoying the oysters with one of Strange Bird's special rum drinks, which I don't remember the name of. It had "Mexican" in the name, though, if that helps you. Strange Bird leans into rum, so you will find lots of mixed drinks with run in them. My tasty beverage also came with a sprig of thyme lying sweetly on top. It was so refreshing, and went so well with the oysters, that I ordered two! It was feeling like a special day, so I also ordered the daily special: the Jiro-Kei ramen, which is probably the best ramen I've eaten in Indianapolis. The broth was like liquid gold. The whole bowl was sumptuous and unctuous and other descriptors that end in -ous (see also: luscious). The egg was perfectly jammy, the cabbage and bean sprouts were piled high, and the pork belly was fabulously fatty. Bonus: The wide noodles are made in-house just for this ramen. I could tell that they were freshly made, because they were nicely chewy. I had to stop myself from groaning in pleasure while eating. Comfy couches and chairs to wait for your table and intimate lighting throughout. The place is not large, so I do recommend reservations. The food and drinks! So much flavor and the spice was delicious. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen, and I would say it's definitely a fantastic ramen, I just wish the broth was more porky than poultry. It does list itself as a paitan broth in the description, so it's not deceptive, I just associate tonkotsu with the rich, heavy flavor of pork that is assisted by some chicken gelatin, not carried by it. I also requested kamaboko in my ramen, but laughed to see it was one small single piece! I wouldn't mind if paying extra was needed, I just love fish cake and expected more than a single slice. To the wonderful credit of our server; however, when my friend jokingly complained at the table that ramen only ever comes with one half instead of a whole egg, he overheard and brought us second halves in a flash! No one was actually expecting that, she was just making a joke, yet our server was quick to show they mean business. Ordered two drinks: Strong Order and Scorpion Reef. Both okay, but not good enough to order more drinks. Strong Order was supposed to have Chartreuse in it, but you couldn't taste a drop. Split a ramen soup. Nothing special on the soup unless you count the cherry tomatoes in it. That was a first. The place was good for a one and done. The bill lowered my review significantly. The kitchen gratuity was a surprise (3%). I'm all for getting something to back of house. Just let your customers know. The worst part of the bill was a $2 uncharge for "spice on the side". I've written 493 Yelp reviews, and this is only the 3rd 2-star ever. And honestly I debated making it my 1st 1-star. Sorry, it's a long read, hope you'll hang with me! I've been to Strangebird numerous times; have always enjoyed it. I bring my mom here when she is in town, because we love the half price oysters (5-6pm only), and she doesn't have anyone to eat them with where she lives. So we went at the very end of April 2025 (it's taken me some time to want to write this.) Hubs joined us for dinner, too. Hubs & I had a cocktail (the Painkiller in the skull mug, and the Lost Lake in the flamingo mug), and my mom has a very pretty colada mock tail. The drinks are absolutely gorgeous, even though this time it was definitely heavy on the crushed ice and not a lot of liquid, it was still really yummy. For food, we ordered the bao buns, 4 dozen oysters (we ordered 2 doz, then 2 doz more), the shoyu ramen, the katsu curry, and a dessert. Everything was very beautiful & tasty (see pics). 5 stars if we stop here. Now here's the rub. The waiter brings our bill (which is nearing $300 with a tip). It contained the taxes and also an additional kitchen fee (not server gratuity) - which I expected, because this was listed on the menu that it would be charged. Then I notice that 3 of the doz oysters were listed at half price ( on the receipt as "doz happy hour oysters") , but the 4th was charged full price. I point this out to our server, and say, this is an error, we ordered this before 6pm, and he tells me, "oh it's just 1 doz per person for the half price." I explain that this is neither posted on the chalk board, nor on the menu, nor was it mentioned by him. He basically says, "well that's the way it is." I say, "that doesn't feel good - it's really just not a fair way to charge a customer." He argues with me a bit (not loudly, but also not doing anything), I mention "let's talk to a manger," then on the 4th time I say a little more firmly "how about we talk to a manger" - so he goes to get one. A gentleman comes to our table. I think it might be the person who was actually shucking the oysters. I explain the situation, say, it wasn't listed or said to us anywhere, so it just doesn't seem fair. He Immediately agrees, says no problem, and says our server will get that adjusted for us. Easy-peasey and very nice! -- That felt like really great customer service. I'm thinking about my Yelp review, and I'm getting ready to sing praises! Back to 5 stars! Our server brings the receipt, I thank him for handling that, and even joke "well hey now I can just put even more to your tip!" and he laughs at that. I glance at the receipt, it lists 4 doz all together now, and we pay and leave. We get about a min away when I ask my husband to turn the car around. I realize that, while they have written the 4 doz oysters differently, they have NOT adjusted the price. Line reads $96, but should be $78. I go back in. I wait several minutes at the front (no other patrons waiting). Another man comes to the counter. I explain the situation and say, so we are still really still owed $18. He tells me, no, we are getting half price on the specialty per oyster price, not half price on the dozen happy hour price. (Which by the way, I ordered the happy hour chefs choice dozens, not the specialty per piece ones). He then says this has always been their policy. I reply that well, my first receipt rang up as "half price happy hour dozen" and also, the numerous times I've eaten there, then all of the servers then must have just been generous and kind because that is the way it's always been charged to us. (And also, see my previous reviews where I talk about this!) I restate that we enjoyed our meal, we are frequent visitors, but it's the principal of the error should be absorbed by the establishment, not the customer. He says something else that I can't really remember, but I do remember that my response was, "Well would you rather that I just write a bad review?" On that, he takes money out of his wallet and slaps a $20 on the counter, telling me to keep the change. I pick up the money. He then asks me if I'm really going to take that & nickel and dime them and take "his" money?! I ask, is he really going to do that do a customer instead? I thank him for his attention and leave. So y'all, thanks for hanging with a long read. It took a while to write. Might I eat there again for half price oysters and limit myself to less? Meh, no. Let's face it, I spent almost $300 for dinner (after tip), so yes, I could have spent an additional $18. Or I could have had 2 drinks instead of 1, that's about the same price to easily spend more. But it's the principal of really feeling like they were trying to pull a fast one -- and thinking they did, but they got caught - that will make me take my business elsewhere. The owner was crazy tbh lmao. My friend and I ate there and we took a picture of us and I think it's what made him go crazy. But he was rude and cussed at us and wouldn't fulfill any of our requests. Then when we were walking out I called him an asshole and he pushed me literally put his hands on me and pushed me. I think he thought we were bisexual cause I was with my friend who was a man. Extremely odd experience maybe he was just having a horrible night. The food wasn't even that good that time though I've eaten there one other time and it was pretty good. For starters the ambiance is incredible, very tiki-chic in a way that feels well thought and playful. The drinks are so beautifully crafted and uniquely served, but overall the presentation was more impressive to me than the drinks themselves. They were so heavy on the ice that it didn't feel like they could be savored long enough to justify the cost. The service was fine once we were seated but incredibly slow, we arrived a bit early and had a cocktail but we weren't able to sit at the bar to enjoy it, despite a few empty seats, which was strange instead we were directed back to their entry/lounge where we waited around 25 minutes past our reservation time. We were offered a complimentary appetizer for the wait but were so disappointed to find that they were completely out of oysters, which is a big part of what they do and the main reason we wanted to check it out. The food was really great, the ramen broth really blew us away and the wings were flavorful and unique. Over all, I would not go in a rush or super hungry because it did feel a bit painfully long but for a quirky and aesthetic fun night out that feels more novelty than anything in the area we have been to lately. read more

Food was great, the dumplings were delicious and the ramen was flavorful. Some of the best oysters I have ever had. Oysters were fresh and served with horseradish and balsamic vinegar sorbets that were phenomenal. Cocktails are flashy and beautiful with a large menu of signature drinks to choose from. The issue I had was the fact that the cocktails were 95% ice and 5% drink. Which is why I only rated this place four stars. You're paying $15-20 for a cocktail that's mainly ice and about three sips. Overall, great atmosphere and food, but could improve on cocktail ice to drink ratios. read more
