a bottle of wine on a stove
Cindy K.

Visited Granville Island today and stopped in at Liberty Wine Merchants to pick up a bottle. There were a lot to choose from and after feeling overwhelmed, decided to gamble on one of the "cheap" bottles near the register. We were trying to decide which one when we noticed the man behind the counter grab a bottle off the shelf and ring it up. We asked him which bottle to get and he said the one he just rang up for us. So we purchased it on his recommendation and took it home to enjoy later on our last night of vacation. Immediately after opening the wine, we could tell something was off. It clearly was not stored properly as there was sediment in the neck of the bottle. The wine itself was completely intolerable/unpalatable. It was essentially vinegar in a bottle. The entire bottle immediately went down the sink. The bottle we were duped into purchasing was a Migjorn by Daniel Belda. It may have won a silver medal back on 2011, but in 2018 it was clearly a dud and should not have even been available for purchase. We feel we were completely taken advantage of by the employee who was just looking to pawn some sh*tty wine on some unsuspecting tourists. Well, we may have purchased a crap bottle of wine, but Liberty, you have earned yourself a crap review. FYI, we won't be back.

Review Highlights - Liberty Wine Merchants

There are two outlets on my doorstep that would be easier to visit but it's always worth the trip to see Pierre and team on the Island.

But it's got such a great selection of bottles, including lots of delicious choices from BC. I often stop by looking for a bottle to accompany a meal and the staff is always on hand to answer any wine-related questions. They're helpful, but not pushy and don't judge you in the way you know you're often judged by snooty oenophiles. A great way to buy wine is to taste it first, which makes Thursday (and sometimes Friday) the best afternoon to drop by Lennox. They host a wine tasting at the counter. While you're at the counter, look up ... way up on the shelves and you'll find a great selection of dessert wines from BC. Dessert wines (especially coveted ice wines) make excellent boozy presents. If you're traveling and want to take a bottle to thank your host, ice wine is just a small bottle and easy to pack!

They are trusting that the lower prices will bring in enough people to make up for their low margin and so far it seems to be working for them. I hope it continues to do so, so give them your business! City Square might seem like a pain for parking, but there are several 15 minute spots off of Ash street outside so you don't have to go into the underground parking. Great selection of craft and import beer.. I like a good selection of quality inexpensive wines and they get two big thumbs up for that. They even sell mead and Sea Cider.

When I got off the bus and so Granville I thought oh there used to be a government liquor store here surely the goodness serious at least a private one nearby. And so I found Jaks and it was a wonderful experience . Great selection, more like a baby LCB than a wine store or some of the other liquor Outlets just basically have a lineup of basically overly marked up pricing. I just drink something like polarize or silent Sam with low-cal cranberry juice on the Rocks but as a martini. I was able to purchase four bottles and the only markup was two bucks . Two bucks. After just paying almost $10 more for a 26 year Alberta vodka. And they actually wanted $44 for $28 bottle of Absolute Vodka. Upmarket gouging never sits well with me. So, while I still mostly by my vodka at a government store, when I want to just go out and have a lovely afternoon and bring home some wine and some vodka i zoom up from my little corner of Yale town by bus to the south Granville District and pick up my supplies . Thanks guys , you are doing a great service to us Vancouver rights and I for one I'm delighted and happy to support you.

Upon first impressions, this is a small boutique sized wine store (we are in South Granville after all) that tries. It's a split level, the entrance (higher) level is wine, lower level (exit) is beers. There is a little bit of everything grouped by countries. A few bottles of each brand, and looks like a good mix of mid-priced to higher priced bottles. Appreciated the fridges lined with white wine. I imagine it serves as a good last minute "grab and go." I had a few minutes to browse before I was asked if I needed help. They didn't have the bottle I was seeking but the guy spent at least 5 to 10 minutes going over some other wines he recommended, taking my budget into account and asking other questions (i.e. was I looking for a specific varietal, region, etc.) He mentioned I could bring the bottle back if we were unsatisfied with the wine but I didn't ask how that would work... I would feel sheepish to bring back an opened bottle of wine. In the end I took a bottle that was recommended, within my budget, and though I had never heard of this winery before, turned out to be a great hit at dinner. Thanks!

I don't travel with a wine opener, so being able to pick up a bottle that's a screw top is very convenient. This store was clean and well organized. The store is small but packs a lot of selection. There is a wine section in the back that offered bottle of reds between $10-$20. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, so the options were right up my alley. I went with a bottle of Cono Sur Bicicleta, a Cabernet Sauvignon (Wine of Chile 2012) for $14. It's medium-bodied, dry and fruity. You might find it cheaper at LCBO, but not by much. The label reads: A deep plum red with aromas of red fruit, cassis, black plums, and soft spices, together with a fruity, structured palate. Goes well with strong cheese, hearty stews and grilled cuts of beef.

They have a big bank of fridges with all the usual suspects ready for your enjoyment. The staff is friendly and they check you through quickly, even if there's a line up on Friday evening. However, it's not a great place to buy wine. The selection is all pretty cheap stuff - and not the cheap stuff that was chosen wisely because they're diamonds in the rough. Most of the wines here are cheap and taste like it. I'm a girl who's always shopping for a delicious bottle for under $15, so I've drank my share of cheap wines. I have my favourites and they aren't for sale here. The do accept bottle returns in the back. So if you live near here you can recycle up to 24 bottles in a visit.

We were fortunate enough to snag a tiny one by the pool tables but it wasn't big enough for food and drinks so we ended up moving before ordering food. We shared a small plate of nachos and a chicken wrap with fries. I don't recommend the guacamole, as it wasn't very fresh and just had a weird texture. The food was very average in my opinion. At least they have a decent beer list. They had karaoke and there was a steady stream of people waiting to take their turn on the microphone. Those folks were much braver than me, that's for sure. I love that they still have pull tab machines, those are always going to take some of my money, if for nothing else but the nostalgia. I ended up winning a few bucks, so that added to the overall positive experience. Service was ok - there seemed to be a bit of confusion over who our server was, but once that was resolved, we had no issues. It was fairly loud but not so much that we couldn't still carry on a conversation. I'd probably go back, because there are not too many places in the area that still have a pool table.

After checking their system records, they told me it was out of stock. I asked if they could recommend something similar. The person working said he knew nothing about wines and would get someone to help me. Kind of a shocker but maybe he was new? After 5 minutes of waiting (with no one else in the store), someone finally walked up. I repeated my earlier statement and he picked up some $75 bottle of wine and told me it was similar. I asked him to tell me more about the wine and he pulled some app off his phone to tell me something about raspberries. I claimed I didn't think it was my friends taste and he started arguing with me about how the app is never wrong and that is exactly what the wine tastes like according to the app. I tried to explain I wasn't arguing about how the wine tastes, but instead saying I didn't think my friends would like it. While he was trying to find something else that might suit me, I saw some bottles of Hess on the shelf and grabbed one and got out of there as quickly as I could. Not only was the wine much more expensive than my local liquor store but going in there was a painful experience. I will never step foot in there again. Just an awful experience.
