Amazing customer service! We walked in as we got drawn by the building, after we walked in we wanted to stay for dinner! The Library Lounge has a very old English Gentlemen Club look and feel with bookshelves on the walls ( hence Library ). I say amazing customer service is that the restaurant staffs are very accommodating and also courteous, while we were waiting for our table, ( they had a very very busy Wednesday night ), even the Bar Tender came to chat with just keep us happy. We ordered: To start : Beef Barley Soup / Borscht both were done well but it took about 45 mins. before our soup appeared, our server did communicate to the kitchen but still our soups were not ready until later! I do not blame the server at all, but I saw a few tables before us got their soups or salads and they all came after us. Oh well, sometimes the kitchen staffs are hard to deal with. Steak & Prawns - Cooked to perfection, the meat is slightly on the lean side for my taste, but still very flavourful. Seafood Pasta - Tomato based sauce filled with Halibut, Salmon, Mussels etc. Creamy and full of fresh tomatoes, the pasta can be a tad more al dente and will be perfect! Nice ambience, with live music, this is a great spot to come enjoy a relaxing evening with good food and wine, and of course the very friendly staffs and even fellow dinners!! read more

We decided to check out this place after researching thing to do and places to eat in Nelson. The Hume Hotel, Library Lounge in a very old rustic Gentleman 1898 restaurant. With Original fireplace and floor with wood work from the 1898 era. Due to the covid it is recommended to make reservations. We were lucky they had a few tables available for stragglers like us. The restaurant tables are spaced apart for covid social distancing. Very friendly and help staff made recommendations to what is good on the menu. Like everything! LOL Ordered the following: - 2 Smokey Paprika Salmon with choice of soup or salad at $29.00 each - 1 Grilled Salmon Salad $17.00 - 1 Veal cutlets $25.00 Of course with white wine that was suggested by our waitress can't remember the name, was so good. The Library Lounge is in the historic hotel - the Hume. It was a cold and rainy night. We had a reservation, fortunately and they gave us what I think was the best seat in the house right by the fireplace. The room is so cozy and warm with the fireplace on and book lined shelves all around the room hence the name the library. The outside windows have etched glass drawings and there was so much beautiful woodwork in the room. They also had a great bar with a huge mirror behind it and a bartender who was tending the bar all evening. There were only 2 seats at the bar. The room is decorated with caryatids and lovely wool moldings. The food was out of this world and very reasonable. I had the lamb medallions with a balsamic plum sauce and it came with roasted potatoes, lemon zest broccolini, and zucchini squash and my husband had the special of the day which was angel hair pasta in a creamy garlic sauce with pancetta and topped with 7 good sized prawns. The meals came with a very tasty roasted cauliflower soup that was topped with crispy leeks and pancetta. We both had a large glass of wine and were too full to have dessert. The tab for this wonderful evening was less than $100.00 before tip. Money well spent. The service was also outstanding. Washrooms are in the hotel lobby. read more

Every time I come here the food and drink and Service continues to impress. The brussel sprouts salad is massive so except to get it as like a main or make sure to share... good prosecco, beautiful atmosphere. There's nothing I have ever had that I didn't enjoy. Definitely a fan of the local foods as well, the borscht (of course! Good old doukabhor borscht!) and the local game and wild mushrooms ... yea I'm a fan. Also sometimes have musicians playing at night. It's always a great spot! Would be good for a romantic dinner as it's dark and has a nice mood. read more

The Library Lounge looks to be an old gentlemans' smoking room at the hotel. But now it is a nice intimate bar/lounge. Very comfortable room, and this evening we visited, a musician duo that played some jazz. This made the atmosphere just right. It is a bit dark with the lighting and the dark color of the walls and ceiling but its not too bad. Wait staff and bartender were very friendly and attentive. When we arrived there was no open tables but they seated us at the bar while we waited and got the drinks started. We were seated shortly after that. Food was great. We had the seafood special for the evening. Over all a very relaxing dinner and evening of fun and light entertainment. read more

The atmosphere is nice and cozy. The food was average and just okay. We were there when the entire city lost power for a few minutes and the crowd that night loved it. The staff was nice and knowledgeable with a decent bar selection. But the action between this lounge area and the adjoining restaurant did not blend well and was distracting. We had a really good meal here though the wait was silly and then they brought us incorrect orders. We waited 20 minutes to get seated. Then we both ordered seafood fettucini and 45 minutes later they brought us regular fettucini. We waited another fifteen minutes and then finally got our food. Server was super nice tbough fairly unattentive. Room is beautiful. Music was dreadful (75 year old man at a keyboard who sang very poorly)! It was so bad that it was comical. This is our first visit to Nelson and having read a bit of the history knew we wanted to find time to visit The Hume, the place is wonderfuly restored and The Library Lounge seemed the perfect spot for an intimate drink and appy. There were lots of locals, who might have been regulars based on the conversations overheard, is always a good sign. Service was friendly, informative and prompt. The decor and ambiance here was great. There was a live jazz guitarist playing for most of our meal, which was wonderful. We had fried rice balls with cheese and pesto as an appetizer. Service was very good, and prices reasonable. We started with wine and grilled cheese sliders. The wine was very good, smooth and drinkable (cab & Malbec by the glass). Husband had chicken & prawn tortellini and I tried the mushroom ravioli. Both were very good. The mushroom raviolis were a definite winner and I would order those again and again as would my husband who helped me clean my plate! Only suggestion would be to offer a garlic bread on French or sourdough instead of Texas toast (which was pretty good also). Sliders were tasty too but needed more cheese? Super delicious! I love a place that even though their focus isn't vegetarian food, they still make an effort to deliver delicious, different vegetarian options. I had the cauliflower wings which I highly recommend. My friends aren't vegetarian and enjoyed their meals as much as mine (burger and chicken stir-fry). Drinks were good too. Nice restaurant. My wife had the ravioli filled with mushrooms and a tomato sauce which she enjoyed. I had the prime rib that came with seasonal veggies, mashed potatoes and a great tasting gravy. The meat was very tender and tasty, this was accompanied by Yorkshire pudding. One of the best puddings I've had in a while. Ee topped off the meal by sharing a slice of turtle cheesecake. We decided to eat at the Library Lounge since we were staying in the Hume Hotel and didn't feel like going too far after our long drive. That said, we really enjoyed it! I got a veggie bean burrito and it came with a Caesar salad and rice. The burrito itself was substantial and topped with sour cream and salsa. It was perfect. My husband got the fish and chips which also came with a salad. Several times throughout our meal he commented how good it was. And I stole a few fries......they were delicious! Super thick cut with a perfectly crisp outside. We didn't have room for dessert, but definitely plan to go back to try the pear ginger crisp....a.so stay tuned for a review of that.... The Hume Hotel is a Nelson institution, est. 1898, and renovated many times through its existence. The Library is a relaxed, adult-orientated bar, with the same menu as the attached pub and family restaurant in the same hotel. Suited primarily for couples or small groups (large parties would not fit in), the Library has a great choice of standard N. Am favourites, and satisfies the soul, if not the adventurous spirit. In other words: it does the basics well, but doesn't offer anything new or different. This is NOT a chain-style offer, but still runs through the bistro-bar classics from salad bar, nachos, pot stickers and wings to mains of ribs, burgers, fish and chips, pasta and meat and two veg, and onto a fair display of desserts which will include everything you expect from a mainstream, though independent, hotel. The food is good, not amazing, but, to be fair, they aren't aiming for the latter. They cater, very well, for the masses. Service is generally excellent; prices reasonable; atmosphere pretty good for a small-town independent operation. Food: you've seen it all before, but this place has bags more authenticity than a White Spot, and you get some live laid-back jazz or country-folk music thrown in as well, and it's as good as it gets in the mainstream vein for little old Nelson. read more

I take my friends from out of town to have dinner at the library. The food is always quite good and probably this is the most consistent place in town.It seems they try hard to accommodate everyone's likes, and pull it off. My husband and I stopped in here for an early dinner on a Saturday. The atmosphere is fabulous! The vintage books and decor are really fun and the vibe isn't too formal, but is still classy. I ordered the house chardonnay which I thought was just ok. My husband ordered a local beer and LOVED it! (so much so that we walked next door and bought a six-pack). We split the cauliflower wings and the garlic brie appetizer and thought that both were pretty delicious. Then we split the veggie burger, which was fantastic! My husband is vegetarian and I am not, so finding a good veggie burger that both of us will enjoy and split is hard. The one we had here was really meaty and had a nice texture. We also shared a glass of their sangria, which was really, really good. The service was average. Our waitress was nice and helpful when she was around, but she seemed distracted and didn't visit our table enough. I went a good amount of time with no drink at one point. I wouldn't go here if you are in a hurry, but if you are looking for a relaxing place to enjoy good food, I totally recommend giving it a try! read more
