Ciao! Are we becoming more italian? Whilst on holiday in Italy, I used to wonder how all the gelato shops survived in the winter. I thought perhaps it didn't get too cold there as it's a lot further south than the UK. I thought perhaps the Italians were hardy souls However, I've noticed a recent proliferation of ice cream shops opening in London to join old stalwarts like Scoop, which now has 2 branches in the West End. Perhaps we Brits are quite tough to be eating ice cream in the winter too! Lick is a cute little shop selling gelato, which I find creamier than regular ice cream. This was an *accidental* daytime dessert stop - we tumbled in more to shelter from the rain after a great feed across the road at Bibimbap! We were attracted by the cute signage and all the interesting sounding flavours on the windows (peanut butter! spiced pear!) though once inside they didn't actually have them all available. It still took us ages to choose from the 12 or so flavours they did have though. I liked that you could still choose 2 flavours for a small cup and opted for the Rose (yep I'm one of those weird people that actually pick the turkish delight first from a box of chocs) and the Cookies 'n Cream. Both were delish and I liked that the girl behind the counter properly squished it in to fill the cup. Sadly the cup itself was still far too small to warrant a £4 price tag on any common sense scale, but such is the extent of gelato inflation in Soho! Hence the 3-stars as the service didn't exactly sparkle either, but it was still a tasty treat. read more

This is the best gelato I've had, hands down. This is coming from someone who has gelato daily when visiting Italy. The flavors are unique and oh so creamy. Peanut butter, pear and apple pie are my favorites so far. The people serving you are incredibly friendly and generous with samples. The place is bright and spotless. I thought it was risky for them to open up in the Fall, but no matter how cold it is outside, the minute you look at the gelato on display, you won't be able to help yourself. read more

Home made icecream served by the chef who really does love to have a chit chat with everyone about new flavours that he could make I was a woos and stuck to chocolate mint chip.. a classic which certainly didnt disappoint. Two additional bonus features make this place fab and worth trying out. The first it that it is right next to the Soho Sq and so the perfect plcae to grab and ice cream and then chatter away over the random flavours while being in a cute little park. Second feature is its opening hours. Open past midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. So you really can have your icecream and LICK it.. no matter if its classic or quirky, day or night, drunk or sober! read more

London is getting more gelato and posh ice cream shops in general, but one that has been around for a while is Lick Gelato. Lick has at least 20 flavours and if you ask them they will let you have a sample before you buy. The flavours are good and coffee is also available in addition to ice cream cupcakes, waffles with ice cream. But other than that it doesn't really compared to all the other gelato shops in the area. The shop interior looks plain and there isn't much space to sit in so it's best to takeaway. If you looking to try all the gelato shops in Soho, make this one on your list. read more

I'm generally pretty against the idea of leaving a review for a food establishment where I didn't have any food, but here we go. We had dinner across the street and I basically sat there the whole time, gazing out at Lick and I knew that gelato needed to be in my near future. So after dinner, we crossed over and I beelined for the shop. There weren't any customers ordering, but there were a couple of people eating ice cream. There was one member of staff behind the counter, who was fiddling with the coffee machine while talking to someone else sitting on a barstool next to the coffee machine (either a co-worker or a friend). So I had a look at the flavours, agonised, looked at the prices and was shocked (~£4 for a SINGLE scoop? But by this point I *needed* gelato). And I stood there and sighed and waited and the entire time, the member of staff rabbited on, never acknowledging me, nor shutting up long enough for me to get a word in. When I'm paying that kind of money for a bit of ice cream, I shouldn't have to shout for service. I turned to my husband and said loudly, "Well I guess no one will help us, we should go." And still pretended we weren't there. So we went. I saved ~£4 and a few hundred calories, and all the future potential calories as I wouldn't bother trying again! read more

When I asked the young lady what her fave gelato was she said salty caramel. So I ordered that and I think I got the caramel cream. The rest of my family got a banana, chocolate and watermelon. I thought the gelato was so-so. My caramel was lacking caramel flavor. My son's watermelon was very subtle in taste. Then my daughter's banana had a very strong flavor of vanilla. (hmmm). read more

A steady stream of people visit this store on Greek Street for their gelato and sorbet. We came here on a weekday evening to spend a Groupon voucher where both of us could have a waffle with a scoop of gelato and a hot drink. It was nice enough, but I am not otherwise a fan of gelato, so I wouldn't come back to pay full price. The waffle was a bit doughy, perhaps undercooked. It needed to be firmer to support the gelato. The service was good, better than I expected. He got the scoop of gelato wrong: I had asked for hazelnut, but he had scooped stracciatella. He must have suspected the mistake because he asked me again what I had selected. I would have been fine with stracciatella but he just gave me the bonus scoop of hazelnut. Perpetually on the lookout for a good gelato, the gf and I stuck our noses into Lick to see how they stacked up. We sampled the 'LICK Roche' flavour which I presume is meant to be their take on Ferrero Rocher, though the young lady behind the counter could only describe it as, "Um, chocolate and something else, I think." Brilliant. Because there are 10,000 flavours for you to remember? That's just sloppy. The taste was ok, but too sweet. We also sampled 'Rose' which tasted nothing like roses or, for that matter, anything else recognizable. We finally settled on a chocolate-lined waffle cone with a scoop of white chocolate with nuts and another of 'Wild Strawberry.' The white chocolate was quite good, but nothing mind-blowing; 'Wild Strawberry' tasted like artificial flavouring. The chocolate-covered wafer had zero flavour whatsoever. The worst part, for me, was the fact that all of the gelato were watery and half-melting, even in the actual case; it's October, and not precisely tropical outside. There's absolutely no excuse for the temperature of the gelato to be kept so high and makes me wonder how often they actually check their temps. read more

My friend and I were craving ice cream or gelato so we set out for Soho to try this place. When we walked inside, the only worker there didn't acknowledge us for a good three minutes while she made a coffee at the machine. When she finally finished, she turned to us to take our orders. The portions were a good size for gelato and the price was kind of expensive but not horrible. I ordered one scoop of chocolate and one scoop of coffee and the coffee definitely won. Both weren't excessively creamy and had good texture. The gelato was sweet and i had no trouble finishing my cup! Besides the service, the gelato was tasty but I think i want to try other places next time. read more

Hey look! Another gelato place in Soho. That's the 5th one on this block. Fortunately, this is a place you can walk right on past without batting an eye. Both flavor AND texture of the three selections I tried (mint chip, chocolate caramel, and Mediterranean lemon) fell quite far short of expectations and into the treacherous "Do I even want to finish this?" territory. Yikes. In short: bland flavor & poorly crystallized product = skip. Maybe I just have high standards (that's definitely true), but Lick's gelato simply isn't worth wasting your calories on. Fortunately, you have a slew of other options nearby, my favorite being Gelupo. Far suprior product, and cheaper to boot. read more

This was without a doubt, the worst gelato or ice cream I have ever had, and I'm not normally one to turn my nose up at ice cream of any description. It was somehow completely tasteless. I got the nutella and the mint chocolate chip, and there was no way of distinguishing between them, which was disturbing, since it's not like mint extract or nutella are expensive or difficult to procure. The only flavour was a slight hint of sweetness, and the gelato was quite grainy and watery in texture. My boyfriend got the salted caramel and honeycomb flavours, and whichever one I was unfortunate enough to try tasted overwhelmingly of fake butter flavour. I almost gagged. Seriously, avoid this place, especially when there are many wonderful gelato options elsewhere in London. It was a huge waste of money and calories. read more

Beyond the fact the gelato was excellent and we were given a 10% discount (even though we were finished and packing up) because they needed to close early, this is a great place. It seems to be run by a (soon-to-be) husband and wife combo, and are wonderfully nice. Lick!! What the heck were you thinking with some of the flavors you sell! A total hit or miss with this gelato shop. After buying a Groupon we decided to head down to soho to try Lick. With our deal we (2 people) got a choice of hot drink each and each a waffle cone with 2 scoops each of any flavor ice cream. We started out with a hot chocolate each which was nice. For gelato flavors I opted for mango and amaretto while my friend opted for a lemon sorbet and caramel flavors. The mango was bland and barely had flavor and the amaretto was not tasty at all so I didn't eat it. My friend's lemon sorbet was amazing though!!! The caramel was so sweet that I couldn't eat it though. The waffle itself lacked flavor and at £7 originally for the waffle and 2 scoops each I didn't think it was worth the price. Thankfully we had a Groupon and we didn't spend a load of money and become disappointed. read more

For a place that makes ice cream fresh daily, this ice cream is piss poor. First, the ice custard is made with so much sugar, you can barely taste the underlying flavor. Second, the gelato was over frozen. Gelato is supposed to be smooth with the scoop and not tear. Even worse, there were crunchy ice crystals in the gelato. Tells me it's melted and refrozen. Went here after hearing high praise from a friend and co-worker. I was very disappointed with it. The gelato was not very smooth -- bits were more solidly frozen then other bits so it had a lumpy consistency, and the flavor was overwhelmingly sweet. I'd much rather go to gelupo! read more
