I have been studying with Jared McCann for sometime now. I'm a certified Bikram yoga instructor, and I have to say he is by far my favorite teacher in all of New York City... well all of everywhere actually LOL and I have taken classes all over the world ;) If you're really looking to take your practice to the next level or just starting off on your journey I highly recommend this school. It's suited for all levels. Everyone at the studio is incredibly welcoming. Jared is a wonderful teacher and spiritual leader, and someone who truly does care for the practice and his students. They incorporate all different types of yoga into the classes. (12/29/19) Here is an update to my prior review. I felt the need to update as I have taken over 500 hours of teacher trainings at Lighthouse over the past year: I can't say enough how thrilled I am to have found yoga at Lighthouse. I found Lighthouse in November of 2017. I just moved to the area and was looking for a yoga studio. After taking my first class at Lighthouse, I was completely hooked. I took Mila's Sunday morning class suitable for beginners and found it to be the most perfect well-rounded and rigorous class. I then took Jared's Tuesday evening class and it was challenging and intense, but absolutely perfect- Lighthouse, all of the teachers, the JM Vinyasa sequence- everything made me fall in love with yoga! The classes were challenging, yet suitable for beginners like myself. The community full of many experienced practitioners were inspiring to me, the space was beautiful and the vibe was uplifting. My initial impression of Lighthouse made me realize yoga needs to be an integral part of my life. A year after being a student at Lighthouse, I took the 200 hour training, the 30 hour adjustments intensive, and the 300 teacher trainings which made me understand why the JM Vinyasa sequence is so special- Jared took years to hone this sequence, pulling the best from Bikram, Ashtanga, Forrest, Dharma, and other lineages. Lighthouse has also introduced me to mantra, pranayama, and meditation. After doing the 200 hour training at Lighthouse, I kept with a daily meditation practice of mantra meditation and my daily meditation practice has helped me in the most practical way- it has helped me lessen the fear, doubt, and anxiety about the day ahead. I feel so grateful that I get to practice at Lighthouse as the teachers are not only incredibly knowledgeable and dedicated to their personal practices, they deeply care about helping students improve. Taking workshops with Jared has helped me appreciate his willingness to share his many tips for feeling good while reaching more depth in a pose. He explains poses for both beginners and advanced practitioners to understand and demonstrate. Jared and Rebecca go above and beyond to gather the best teachers from around the world to teach class and workshops on a variety of subjects: asana (conditioning, posture clinic), meditation and puja ceremonies, kundalini, among others. Disclaimer: I'm an independent observer who practiced here and want to clarify the incident that Tony (the apparent owner) referenced. This will be my last feedback and leave it up to the Yelp community to decide your own opinions - I have been a Yelp contributor since 2011 so I trust this community wholeheartedly. I would first note that it's curious that there has only been 5-star reviews for this studio since it opened. There were no reviews in 2018, yet when I posted my honest opinion this week, multiple 5-star ratings curiously appeared by users who just opened their account in states other than New York, which is where this studio is based (Yelp - please note this anomaly). During a session this week- this is what I observed and why I left my review and stand behind it. At the start, someone (appears to be an Asian American woman) told a man next to her to flip his phone because the light was distracting her. He did it. She then ordered him to turn it off - quite rudely I might ask. The man did it. I would note that there were multiple phones in the studio, but the woman decided this man's phone was the one that was distracting her, even though it was off. During practice, I observed on the corner of my eye the same woman yelling and cursing the man again for I don't know what reason. The man did not respond to the verbal insult and simply responded "relax." It was at this point that Jared - the instructor - told the man to "get out of my studio." The man politely left as Jared allowed the woman to remain and told his other students in a deceptively befriending manner "yes, I'm mean." Jared, by not acknowledging the actions of the woman in question, you're supporting this toxic behavior in this studio. If this is the "zero tolerance policy" that Tony speaks of, I leave it up to you decide whether this studio is right for you. I would also note that Tony was not present during this event and most likely heard the events recounted from Jared - the instructor. That's all I observed and that's why I left my feedback. read more

Lighthouse is a beautiful, life changing vinyasa studio in Williamsburg. I found Lighthouse back in November of 2017 and never turned back. This is not yoga-lite aka not for people looking to just recreationally 'do' yoga. The practice is serious, challenging, and like nothing I have tried before. Jared is sharp, direct but above all dedicated to his students. After only practising w the lighthouse crew for 4 months, I decided to go with the studio to India on a retreat. That retreat changed my life. If you are looking for true community, this is it. I recommend trying any of of Jared's noon classes - the Saturday class is the best of the week (evidenced by the mat to mat lined floors). I also practice kundalini here with Abhijot and Amanbir who are also out of this world! read more

When I first found Lighthouse, I was brand new to yoga and searching for a good place after my recent move into the Williamsburg area. The classes at Lighthouse are filled with advanced students and yoga instructors, but I immediately felt welcomed and comfortable as a newbie and received a lot of personal attention and instruction, even in a full class. Jared is an amazing and incredibly motivating teacher. He somehow manages to be very serious and very funny at the same time. The spiritual aspects of his classes are genuine and moving, unlike some other yoga classes I've taken elsewhere. On a technical level, the attention to detail for each pose is unmatched. This isn't hot yoga, but I leave every class completely drenched in sweat. All of the other instructors at Lighthouse are great too. Lighthouse offers many different types of yoga and classes, and each instructor has something different to offer. Everyone is really friendly and the place has a great vibe. read more

I have only taken one class so far with Aviad but going back to my regular practice with Isaac Pena yesterday, I already feel lighter and have better control of my body. I am so happy to have found this studio. It is rare to find teachers or a studio that cater to the needs of practitioners with years of yoga experience or are yoga teachers themselves looking to expand their knowledge. Lighthouse is a gem and I will definitely continue my monthly subscription well past the intro offer. Highly recommend this studio. read more

I travel a lot and so I'm always in search for the best yoga studio. Sadly, I've been noticing a trend among teachers and studios and that is that they aren't giving any personal attention to their students. I now typically find that instructors will stand in front of the class (some do walk around), but seldom do any of them give valuable personal corrections. That is not the case at Lighthouse. The instructors at Lighthouse are very diligent about teaching proper form and giving personal attention. The instructors are also very welcoming. I highly recommend Lighthouse If you are looking for yoga classes where you can grow your practise. read more

Let me preface this by saying...I do not like yoga. So the fact that I'm giving this studio 5 stars should say something. It's a beautiful space but that's not what makes this yoga school amazing. I took a class with Jared and wow...I felt inspired in a way that I rarely ever do. It was beyond a physical experience/workout. It was spiritual. I felt cleansed, refreshed, and balanced after I left. Jared is a special person and it actually breaks my heart that I had to move back to San Francisco and I don't get to go to this place as much as I absolutely can. Trust me, it is not your average yoga studio. It's something much more and the second I move back, I'm becoming a regular. read more

Most yoga studios in Williamsburg these days seem to be dedicated to hot yoga (which I don't do -- I sweat enough in regular yoga). So it's great that Lighthouse is providing a high quality alternative. Especially since a number of studios have been forced to close over the past 4 years due to increasing rents, including two I used to call my 2nd home: Greenhouse and Sangha. I was intrigued by Lighthouse's press and great reviews (and steamed-up windows as I walked by the studio during a few classes) so I signed up for an intro month earlier this year. Note: I am a YTT graduate from another studio but was coming back from an injury at the time so I took only open level classes. My pros, neutrals and cons are beiow. In short: I think Lighthouse is a great option for many yogis-- sadly I am not one of them. Pros: 1. Convenient location, clean studio 2. Some very good teachers-- I took classes from 3 teachers and two of them were very good: Samara and Aviad. They had good sequencing and cuing and were very attentive to students, giving them corrections, etc. They also knew students' names which is an added bonus. 3. Lighthouse offers a few 7am M-F classes per week. (These classes are a must for me but most W'burg studios can't attract enough regular students at this time to offer them. Big props to Lighthouse for committing to them. 4. More guys in the classes than the average yoga studio which brings a wonderful and unusual balanced energy to the room and practice. 5. They offer some 90 minute classes --many studios don't anymore. Neutral: 1. Average age of yogis seemed to be 20s to mid-30s. Did not see any older yogis there, except for me! 2. No dharma talks or chanting, in my 1-month experience there (I personally like these things--in moderation-- but I know others don't, so I'm ranking this as neutral.) Cons: 1. They don't offer a lot of classes per day, especially at peak times. And very occasionally, they pre-empt some regular classes for YTT-- in my case, I would not have been able to practice more than once a week during those times because they cancelled the M-F, 7am classes. YTT programs are an important, necessary revenue source for studios, but this would have been a real problem for me. 2. A lot of reviewers give high marks to their physical space but I didn't love it. It felt a bit cramped and I was distracted by the front wall which is entirely mirrored. I found it difficult to stop focusing on myself (and others), to be in the pose/moment and just focus on my drishti sometimes. 3. Not a lot of classes for beginners. Because I was recovering from an injury, I only attended open level classes that were specifically identified as "beginners welcome." As said earlier, two of the teachers I had were very good but the third taught a class that was totally inaccessible/inappropriate for beginners in my opinion. I actually stopped following her at one point because she wasn't paying attention to students; she was more focused on cuing her sequence. In general, I would probably recommend Lighthouse only to yogis with at least 6 months or regular practice or its equivalent. For now, I am now happily back at Laughing Lotus Williamsburg, who have reinstituted their 7am Tu/Th classes. Their teaching style is a better fit for me --and their 2 bright studios at this location have high ceilings and big windows that open--which I find inspiring. But I can understand why Lighthouse would be a good fit for others. Different strokes... More yoga studios is good for all of us! read more

Amazing beautiful studio with some of the best teachers !I love Josh's morning 8:30am to get me going for my day,he is patient helpful and gives great adjustments. I enjoy Aviad's back bending classes my practice has completely changed after attending them regularly. I went from never wanting to do a back bend to looking forward to them, and really pushing myself to get better at my practice. The 4:30 time slot is one of my favorites it is a shorter time (75min) and I can try a different teacher every day of the week. Jared is of course one of the best teachers of our time with so much knowledge of the physical and spiritual aspects of yoga. He puts his heart and soul into his teacher trainings there for every teacher in the studio is amazing and has there own special spin on the JMY vinyasa. read more

I am very impressed by the quality of the teachers here - I feel it is another level. This truly is a school dedicated to providing a learning experience for all those who walk through the door. Whether you are mastering your practice or just discovering your yoga practice, you will be learning from the best of the best alongside those who wish to better themselves as humans, not just have fit bodies. That is an important piece of the puzzle, and if you have been searching for a place that practices what they preach concerning that, then search no more. Jared and his entire team of teachers are an incredible group of gifted and unique people - each bringing their own voice and style to teaching. Despite being in a tragically hip part of town, you won't find any judgement or intimidation here, just a beautifully diverse group of people at all different levels of strength and flexibility, looking to go deeper into their yoga practice. I personally came to Jared having made the decision to do a 200hr yoga teacher training despite having never met him before or taking a single class with him or at his studio (I had followed him for some time on social media). It was one of those instinctual things in life where I knew it would be the right fit for me. Without a doubt one of the best decisions I have made in my life so far! Bonus: Aesthetically, the studio is gorgeous, with light filtering through on either end as well as a serene outdoor area. You step off the sidewalk and feel like you went away for the weekend by time class is over. After a long search trying many local Yoga studios in the Burg looking for excellent teachers, non pretentious environment and nice people my husband found Jared McCann's Light House Yoga school. He came highly recommended by two yogis. My husband took his first yoga class ever with Jared last week and was totally hooked despite not being very flexible. Jared's patience and encouragement motivated him to continue attending despite being sore. Today I took my first class after a long hiatus under Jared's guidance and it was strenuous but felt effortless at the same time. Jared provided suggestions to get the most benefit of each pose while being mindful of new students in the class and providing adjustments. Jared's positive energy made me feel welcomed, relax and his class was superb! The studio is located in a brand new building with lots of space. I have been studying with Jared McCann in NYC for several years now. I am a huge believer in the style of yoga that Jared has carefully crafted into his own; a mix of Ashtanga, Bikram, Dharma, and Vinyasa (among other styles as well). He has had the vision to open his own yoga school since I have started practicing with him, and I could not be happier that his dream has become a reality. I love that it is not a yoga studio, but a yoga school. A sacred space for students to learn, grow their practice, and find a community that welcomes everyone in with open arms.
