The Annual Kauai County Farm Bureau fair is back in town! It runs on the last weekend in August…read moreevery year (25th thru 28th)Thursday thru Sunday. The KCFB puts the fair on annually and the proceeds help to fund the organization's many important projects and scholarships throughout the year. The theme for this year is "Keep Growing and Farm On". There's lots to do!: Rides are provided by E.K Fernandez. They've got all the classics: Ferris Wheel, Ring of Fire, The Zipper, and lots of stuff for the little keiki as well. Food booths are put on by all sorts of Kauai organizations varying from different clubs to pop warner football teams. There's a huge variety of food as some vendors have become semi-famous for the food they put out every year. There's all kinds of live entertainment throughout the fair grounds. Last night there was a hypnotist and a magician. Music headliners are usually on Friday and Saturday nights, I think. The farm bureau tent is worth the trip on its own. There's tables and tables of locally produced fruits and vegetables on display for judging and awards. I especially like that because what's farming on Kauai without a little friendly competition? 5 Stars simply because the Farm Bureau works really hard to make this happen every year, and of course... Because it's the ONLY show in town.

My father instilled a true appreciation for Hawaiian culture and history in me and I'm proud that my sons are taking interest as well. This museum spans many aspects so get ready to go slow and enjoy. We appreciated so much of this museum and wish everyone visits when they come to Kauai!

You may only walk with one drink in hand, so getting a round for the table takes 8 trips. The good bartender made them all at once so I just had to pick them up, one at a time. No line standing for drinks 2 through 8. I got my steps in. The really aren't any bad seats. We paid a little extra for "premium" seating. That got us "ringside". Well worth it. Only negative was the heat. Fans didn't come on until after the fire dancer. Maybe that was a safety thing for the performers, but the fans could have been on before the fire act (I think). Some of the older customers from cold states were having heat issues. Being from Florida, we were fine. Would we do this again, yeah I think so.

I was impressed. I thought the performers were awesome, especially the fire dancers. Just really awesome and the dancers were enthusiastic which made for a better performance. I thought the audio was a bit off. The volume was crazy loud to fill the huge tent but it was hard to hear the individual voices of the narrators. So maybe something to boost the midrange a bit in the balance of the sound system or whatever. I'm not a sound engineer. So if you're visiting Kauai and are looking for a lu'au, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Kalamaku. I think you'll have a good time.

I look forward to this one because it's one of the bigger, more established farmers market. A few years back, I think it was located at the parking lot of the community college itself with more food trucks. The vendors are friendly & most give out samples. I am more inclined to purchase if the vendor is generous with samples (hint hint wink wink) Of note, it's in a grassy area & can get pretty murky/muddy after a rain. Parking is where you can find it at the park. There's of course fresh fruits & vegetables in season, cooked foods (Filipino, Thai, Korean & much more). The one that stood out was the Honey (Yellow) watermelon-- the vendor was all smiles & offered generous samples of the fruit. Oh my, my, my!! It was so sweet, crisp & mouthwateringly delicious! I couldn't pass it up. The sticker price was by size & I asked the vendor to pick a good one for me-- Yokes! $14 Wowzah. That's the most I have ever paid for any watermelon EVER. This had better me a life-changing delicious pick hahaha. We shall see. I was planning on getting my veggies here for my Sinigang (Filipino sour soup): got Ongchoy (kang-kong), okra & small taro--it is called gabi in Tagalog & gandus in Kapampangan. I love gandus coz is definitely creamier in texture compared to the big taro that is used for making poi. I always look forward to visiting this farmers market but sometimes we're not in the area when it is here. I was fortunate to have visited this time. UPDATE: the honey watermelon was sooooo worth it. WOW!!! What an incredible luau with great food and friendly people…read more Smith's is a family-run luau and they put their heart and soul into what they do. We started in their pristine gardens and heard about the history of Smith's and learned about the traditions of Hawaiian luaus. After we transitioned to the dining area for open bar and the luau feast. The luau feast was INCREDIBLE! I went up for seconds and my husband went up for thirds. The roasted pig was his favorite bite of the night, while mine was the teriyaki steak. We both loved the rice pudding for dessert, as well as the coconut cake and fresh fruit. We saw amazing dances and heard the history of different influences on Hawaiian culture. Overall, it was a fantastic night and it was a great first luau for us.

Would add that it's not the easiest set up for those with accessibility challenges to navigate because all stalls are largely situated on a big patch of grass. Could definitely feel the island vibes with music playing from some stalls, and locals catching up with the farmers and vendors while selecting their produce for the week. Prices are comparable to those at the grocery stores. Would definitely recommend checking out when around the area.
