The food was typical Hawaiian luau fare, and plenty of it (chicken, pork, salads, desserts). Drink policy is a little strange. You may only walk with one drink in hand, so getting a round for the table takes 8 trips. The good bartender made them all at once so I just had to pick them up, one at a time. No line standing for drinks 2 through 8. I got my steps in. The really aren't any bad seats. We paid a little extra for "premium" seating. That got us "ringside". Well worth it. Only negative was the heat. Fans didn't come on until after the fire dancer. Maybe that was a safety thing for the performers, but the fans could have been on before the fire act (I think). I was impressed. I thought the performers were awesome, especially the fire dancers. Just really awesome and the dancers were enthusiastic which made for a better performance. I thought the audio was a bit off. The volume was crazy loud to fill the huge tent but it was hard to hear the individual voices of the narrators. So maybe something to boost the midrange a bit in the balance of the sound system or whatever. I'm not a sound engineer. This was the first luau I've attended in a long, long time. This was one of if not the priciest luau that we found when we were shopping around for one. I feel like if this is your first luau, it's worth the price, but I would not pay the same amount to attend a second time. They have a pretty good variety, and number of vendors stationed in their outdoor area. The items sold range from sweets, to jewelry, to little knick-knacks. It's a pretty good selection of things for people looking to buy gifts to bring back home. The ambiance is very lively and enjoyable however at times it felt a little too lively since there were a good amount of kids running around. It would've been fantastic if there existed the option to attend a child-free luau. How enjoyable the event is would also depend on where people are seated. People on the outskirts of the stage would have a harder time being able to listen and watch the show, while people closer to the stage would have an amazing time. My party got to have both experiences since we were initially seated on the outskirts and were brought closer to the center. It really upgraded the experience. The food was pretty hit or miss. Some of it was pretty good, specially for the catering style service, while other dishes were less than average. The drink options weren't the best. If you've a sweet tooth the open bar would be fantastic, though, as all their options were definitely on the sweet side. It would be nice to be able to opt out of the open bar, or have more options for those that want less sugar with their alcohol. Overall, we had a wonderful experience at Luau Kalamaku. This was my second luau, and it was quite different from my previous experience. There weren't many pre-show activities, mostly just a collection of shops to check out. The bar opened early, which was a plus if you wanted to grab a drink ahead of time, and drinks were unlimited until about 7:30 when the show actually started. I definitely wish there had been more to do before dinner, but oh well. Food was served between 6-7 PM. I was lucky enough to be at the first table served, but some other tables had to wait quite a while. Honestly, the food wasn't good, it was below par. The chicken was almost inedible and very tough, the fish was mushy, and the pork was probably the only meat that was decent. I wouldn't come here for the food, but I will say the show was exceptional. The show was easily the best luau show I've been to. My wife agreed and said it was the best she's experienced as well. The storytelling was great, the dancers were amazing, and the fire dancer was absolutely stunning. The 45-minute show was engaging from start to finish. Overall, come for the show, not the activities or the food. Grab a few drinks and you'll still have a great time. Without comparing this to other Luaus in the area, Luau Kalamaku was a wonderful experience. Set at the beautiful Kilohana Plantation, you arrive at an amazing setting and spend several hours enjoying local vendors, a delicious meal, and a well-run show. Service at the Luau was exemplary, and I appreciated how attentive our server was and how frequently he checked in on our table to remove dishes and refill water. While we didn't have children in our party, the staff were engaged with the children present, encouraging them to try some of the dances. The open bar was generous with the rum, and the food was really tasty, especially the signature pork and fresh caught fish. The show was a real delight, what a great opportunity to experience the mythology of Kauai as told by very talented dancers. I was especially impressed by the fire dancing as well as by the many quick changes the female dancers went through during the course of the performance. Some tips I would have for future guests would be to arrive early to allow enough time to look at the vendors and get a drink at the bar. Additionally, there are several other sites/experiences at the plantation, including the Koloa Rum Company, Rum Safaris, and a scenic train, so consider booking at least one other activity on site and end your day with the luau. read more

This was a really cool experience. There's a lot of big tables. The place is huge so it was just me and my boyfriend so we shared a table with other couples and families whatever the buffet was more than enough food and everything was delicious. The show is what stands out. it was different than any luau experience we'd ever had it was a theatrical musical performance that told the story of Kauai and we really liked that it was fun to experience something different. We actually REALLY enjoyed this luau. We loved the luau we went to on our previous trip, but this one was superior in our opinion. First, they have the option to take the plantation railway tour as an add on. We were doing that at another time, so we didn't add that to our reservation. This allowed us plenty of time to wander the craft fair they had on grounds. This was SO COOL! They had jewelry, wood carvings, bone carvings, artwork, other handcrafted items and bath/body products. My daughter bought some hair products and bath/body products. I bought a really cool nightlight. The imu ceremony was nice but the viewing area isn't as great and we felt a bit smooshed. The food was pretty good. I think they had a wider variety than typical luau food. They had the kalua pig, lomi lomi, salads, rice, Hawaiian rolls, etc. I was disappointed when I didn't see poi. I asked a server if they had any and they did, but it was in the back. They brought it to our table and it wasn't the freshest I've had, but it still satisfied the craving. There weren't many options for desserts if you don't like coconut, pineapple or banana. I enjoyed all of them, but my daughters didn't have any. The banana cream pies were wonderful! Dinner and the show are inside under a big tent. The show was phenomenal. We really enjoyed the fact that there was a story to the show, not just performances. This was the only luau I attended and it is really hard for me to decide if it was worth the crazy price or not. Pros: they had cute little vendor booths where you can shop for yourself or for gifts (love my bag made by Mailelani's and the caramels from Kauai Sweet Shop), the performances and the storytelling was beautiful, the fire was incredibly fun, staff was very friendly, they moved my group closer to the stage for the main performance, loved the fish for dinner, and the flower leis were fresh Cons: the open bar is a joke (you can only pick from a few sugary drinks and they were insanely weak), the food was inconsistently cooked and 90% of it was bland, they originally sat us way in the very back where you can barely see, it was hard to see/hear the first part of the performances because everyone was walking around and being loud, kids were screaming, the music was way louder than the speaking, and the staff automatically gives men shell leis and women flower leis (some of my guy friends were upset cuz they would've rather had flower leis) Lots of pros and cons. I wish there was a no-drinking package for adults because not everyone drinks. I was very upset having to pay for these kinds of drinks because it was either drink and get sick from all the sugar or basically throw that money down the drain. We have been to Kauai at least 10 times over the past 15-20 years, and did a lot of the "touristy things" early on. I really wanted to do another Luau, so we booked our second visit to Luau Kalamaku because we had such a great time in the past. Before we left for our trip, I was a little surprised at any review that was less than 5 stars. Our experience was wonderful! We were greeted with a flower lei (for me) and a shell lei for the men. We met a gentleman named Henry who worked there and was wearing a South Park shirt from the "Going Native" episode (season 16, episode 11) and IYKYK. Henry was very welcoming and kind and it was fun to chat it up with him about the episode and the Luau Kalamaku reference in the episode. On this trip we booked "silver" which meant we had our own elevated table with a great view of the stage, between the building and the vendor area for two. Highly recommend spending the extra money so you don't have to sit with random people at a circular table, or worse the spaghetti dinner style table set up, unless that is your thing. Had a wonderful conversation with a few of the vendors before dinner and purchased a lovely sterling silver plumeria necklace from a lovely vendor with a wide selection of shark tooth necklaces and other items. Our dinner was so good! I was surprised at some of the review complaints I had read before we left for our trip. Our meal was wonderful. The chicken and the pork were tender and flavorful. If you leave hungry, it's your fault, not theirs. The show was so good, and everyone involved works really hard to put on a beautifully choreographed story. Beautiful doesn't even begin to describe the experience of Luau Kalamaku! My large family party of 15 bought the train ride ticket with the luau and it was such a great treat. We got some time after checking in for the open bar, grabbed some group family photos, and walked around a bit to view a handful of vendors they set up. Then we got on the train and rode around the plantation, it was beautiful and we even got to stop and feed some of the animals... I think the adults in our party were way more excited than the kids. The sunset was gorgeous and our tour guide was hilarious, great experience on the train. We got back to the buffet and oh my, went in with low expectations because it was a buffet but everything, I mean EVERYTHING, was delicious! The serve staff were attentive and the food was getting refreshed quickly, meaning everyone got fresh hot food! The main performance, I really can't put into words how captivating and beautiful it was. I loved the story telling, the dancing, the music, all of it was so beautiful that even my 1.5 year old niece sat and watched the entire show. Venue- 4 stars - the pavilion set in the Kilohana plantation, was open-aired with a lovely view of the trees and flora. Personally it needed more ventilation especially with a venue filled with attendees as well as the crew. Food- 1 star, garden salad was served family style with two kinds of dressing, and a cold dinner roll, were it not for the macaroni-potato salad and fresh fruit, the dinner buffet would get a negative star. The lomi salmon was mostly tomatoes and onions, the chow mein was bland, the Kalua pork was forgettable, teriyaki chicken was standard, and the seafood dish was fishy. Dessert was pineapple upside down cake and haupia. I was expecting poi, but there was none. There was no live unveiling of the Kalua pig either. It was open bar but we opted for non-alcoholic beverages and water, bartenders said no soda. Well, we decided to return here for the second time in eight years and I'm not sure why we did because I was quickly reminded why I was disappointed the first time. The venue itself is nice the way they have the stage makes it possible for everyone to see provided the tables aren't full because some folks would have their back to the stage. The production is just that a; big production of the story of Kalamaku and they do it well. With sound effects, lighting, dance, singing, and the such. Drinks are included in your pricing so we had non-alcoholic blue Hawaiian, which was actually pretty tasty to us. They didn't have the piña colada's because they didn't have a blender. Each person or group sat at a table were led to their assigned table by a host. It was chilly enough for me to have my coat on, and I had asked our host if they could lower the big plastic curtain like things that surround the venue and was told they could do that if I needed. Only later to find out from the same person that, that was impossible because the cast members use that. Of course, I informed him I was not impressed with his lack of truth to begin with. This was in mid January and the weather was unusually nippy and windy. We had a couple join our table later and found out that they were outside watching the pig ceremony. Well, the other couples wanted to see that because they had never seen that before and were not aware that was going on. So not all hosts tell the same information when they seat you. Ours & theirs just told us that there were activities if we were interested, and you can go out and look on your own, but they didn't go into great detail about what was happening. However, the pig ceremony is a significant thing to see and should be highlighted if nothing else. The meal is served buffet style & they release you per table and there are four lines on both sides of the venue. We were at table 121 and I seen the table numbers go up to at least 140+. There were a lot of empty chairs so it was not a full capacity venue this night. Now the reason why I would not come back here is because again the food does not consider gluten-free guests. They have rice of course, sautéed or grilled vegetables, they had a macaroni and potato mix salad, regular salad with 2 different types of dressings available that they brought to the table prior to going up for the main meal. They have rolls which they also brought to the table early. They did not have poi readily available. You had to request it, which was the first time I've seen that happen ever at a Luau. I don't eat it, but the couple that was sitting at our table wanted to try it since it was their first time. So we requested some. They were on the fence about the taste. The served protein was teriyaki chicken, mahi-mahi fish in a white gravy and of course the staple Kahlúa pork. So needless to say the only protein that I was able to have was the pork and I don't eat pork and everybody doesn't eat pork. So they failed on that part. From what I understand, everything was tasty and flavorful for the most part. what I was able to eat was tasty. I got full off of veggies and rice. SMH They had three different types of dessert and the only thing that was gluten-free was Haupia squares some type of jelly form which I did not care for. So basically nothing for me. And the other desserts were literally finger foods, one bite and that's it. You would have to go up several times if you actually wanted a normal serving. But the other people at the table said they was tasty samples. Lol. There was a lot of delay or downtime for the show entertainment. They had people going up on stage while folks were being seated, getting drinks, standing in line getting food, so they were performing basically to nobody because no one was paying attention. So there was just too much time in between sets literally. Once everybody was done eating for the most part is when the main show started, and cast got the attention That was deserved. At the end, the cast members allow you to take pictures with them after they get in a group setting so you can take a group picture as well. Oh, and the last time that we came eight years ago, you actually were stopped to take a picture with a hula girl and a Hawaiian guy like typical, but this time it was a choice and all you got was a sign that said Luau Kalamaku Behind you. I find that pretty laughable and sad. We skipped it. So if it's for a show; indeed go, if it's for the food no allergies, go, if you're gluten-free, you might wanna pass. They also have a train that you can take a ride around the plantation on prior to the event that's part of a package you can purchase. We did that before so we didn't do it this time. This was a very interesting Luau! I might be going too far in saying it had a Cirque du Soleil vibe but it did have that storytelling aspect of it through song and dance. You can tell they really put a lot of thought and effort into giving the audience an incredible show and to tell the story of how Kauai came to be. I watched a baby in front of us cry a bit as she was obviously tired but when the show brought out the fire? It put everyone in a trance and the baby stopped crying immediately. I saw some of the negative reviews of the food and I don't know what they're talking about. Maybe I had lower expectations because of the reviews. Maybe stay away from the fish? I had everything but that. Piled high up on my plate. And I licked that plate clean. The best part is the show!!! The music, storytelling, and dance. Very disappointed in the HYPE! Booked through the cruise ship NCL. They show you videos of them roasting a pig. And tell you after they bless the food they will pull the pig out of the ground. TRUST THAT THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN!!! Luau Kalamak We recently attended Luau Kalamaku at the historic Kilohana Plantation in Kauai. Overall, it was a decent experience. The performance was quite captivating, with a mix of traditional Hawaiian dances, fire poi ball twirlers, and fire knife dancing. There was a storytelling element which provided a unique touch and added to the cultural aspect. The buffet offered basic but a variety of local favorites. While the food was good, it wasn't exceptional. People are brought to the buffet by tables so there is a little rush, but the lines move quickly. For included drinks, they offered the tourist favorites of Blue Hawaiians and Mai Tai's along with beer and wine. The mixed drinks were strong and very sweet. Soft drinks, waters, and other non-alcoholic options were available. The stage set up is elevated about 3-4 feet and is in a round. Ten person round tables ring the stage and go back about 4-5 deep from the stage. The more you pay, the closer you are to the stage which is normal. However, you are assigned a table and seats are allotted on a first come first sat basis. We were in the second ring from the stage which offered a good view. However, service staff frequently passes between the audience and the stage. There is a live band playing traditional music. Before the show and dinner, you can walk the grounds where craftspeople are selling wares. There's also a short audience participation Hula lesson. The show centers around a story which likely has some basis in local lore and legend. The atmosphere, storyline, and some of the theatrics make it seem a little amateur theatre hour, but the performers are committed and put on a great show. The narration does help explain some of the movements. About three-quarters of the way into the show, netting is raised and encircles the stage and the lights dim. This is for the fire twirling act. It was as impressive as the dancers. This is our second luau. The first experience was much more traditional and a smaller group. They focused on educating attendees, along with entertaining, and food. We were told it was the most culturally aligned, and we did a review previously. This luau is what you expect from an over commercialized luau experience. Produced for the masses, okay food, dancers performing in colorful, revealing, but suitable for General Audiences costumes. A storyline which is easily digestible and understood by every tourist family who doesn't want to think too deeply on the significance of what is happening. An entertaining night worth the money. Is important to know that they used a lot plastic and they should be more environmentally friendly and protect Hawaii because at the end they are profiting from the cultural past of the island so how about protect it? read more

Since it was our first time visiting Hawaii, we had to go to a Luau. Our originally booking for another Luau had been cancelled due to flooding, so we rebooked with Luau Kalamaku. We go there a little early, parked, and waited in line for the gates to open. They had someone playing drums to provide some entertainment while we waited. After the gates opened, the line moved relatively quick and we got checked-in and our leis upon entrance. Most people made their way to the photo line first, we decided to get our table and go for the market and grab a drink. As it was just my husband and I, we were assigned to a small, two person table towards the back, but still able to see the stage area well. We walked around and looked at the vendor's stands, and went back to get our souvenir picture. Once we got seated, and the show began, we were dismissed table by table to the buffet. The buffet was underwhelming. I understand they have a lot of people to feed, but there didn't seem to be a ton of options and the food was a little bland. We didn't go back up for seconds, as there was nothing that really stood out for us. We did grab a couple of desserts as well, when they came out. The show itself was great. High energy, talented dancers, and encouraging audience interaction! I loved the story that was told through the dance. The staff were mostly friendly, but you can tell they do this on a daily basis and it is no the most exciting. Some of the cons of the experience were they other patrons. I attended this Luau January 2025. We were seated at table 133 (great view of the show from here). Registration is easy and seamless- you are walked to the first person who gives woman a flower lei and men a shell lei . After this you are sent to the photo section (the photo package cost $26). Once the photo is taken you give your seat assignment to the host who walks you to your table. Once seated you have about 1 hour approx to shop in the back lawn where they have various vendors selling local merch. The bar is also open during this time so you can drink and walk the back lawn (this was my favorite part sipping on a drink and shopping). The back lawn of the Gaylord restaurant is also open for nice photo opportunities. They will ring the conch shell in order to signal the start of the evening (food and show). Food The food was okay- for me this was the worst luau food wise I have been too. I was disappointed with the food selection especially for the price you pay and you're hungry by the time you eat. The macaroni salad and noodles was ok. Other than that it was not worth it food wise. Show From table 133 you get front seat access to the Luau - I loved the show and the interaction/ participation with the audience at the beginning of the show. Other * try to pineapple dole whip outside while you wait! So good and the employee there is so nice!!! But you have to have a cup! Line can get long so try to get your dole whip when you get there * train - you can do the train ride before the show. This was the best luau that I have ever been to. This was my fourth visit to Hawaii and by far the best Luau I have attended amongst the Islands. The show was amazing, the dancers, narrator, fire show and costumes were so well put together. It was the first luau my daughters will remember and I told them they might never see one as good again. Everyone was so nice and welcoming, which sadly I cannot say is always the case on Kauai. The food was sooo good, best yet! The salmon and tomato was sooo fresh and delicious, the fruit tasted as if it was picked today and the pulled pork had me wishing they had to go containers!! I've been to a few luaus and this one is by far one of the best! They use some lighting and sound systems...but they stand apart by telling the story of their history. The others had done performances from different islands...Hawaiian, Samoan, Tongan, and such. The story was really good and really captured everyone's attention. The food was good except the chicken seemed to be a bit overcooked. But everything else was great! My favorite is the Lomi, pork, Mac, and fish. Their desserts were really good also. As for their drinks...really stiff and didn't help with the heat in the place. No AC and you're at the mercy of natural wind. The whole facility was just a sight to see and the people were all nice. read more

On the penultimate night of our seven-night Norwegian Cruise Lines sailing of the Hawaiian Islands, my bride of 26 years and I availed ourselves of the ONE NCL shore excursion we'd allow ourselves to pay the ship's extortionate fees for-- the Luau Kalamaku, held at the stately Kilohana Plantation in Lihue, Kauai. Pros: The plantation grounds are, in keeping with the leafy emerald paradise of Kauai, extravagrantly beautiful. We spent two days each on the islands of Maui, Hawaii (both the Hilo and Kona sides) and Kauai, and the latter easily outpaced the first two for its spectacular, cinematic-caliber landscapes! The post-dinner show is magnificent! The show, which lasts approximately fifty minutes portrays the extraordinary strength and faith of the Hawaiian people as they make the daunting ocean trek from Tahiti to Hawaii through twelve vignettes exploding with Polynesian music, dance and, yes, stunning fiery theatrics! The open bar is quite a welcome relief. After several days where NCL frankly has its fist shoved in your pocket tryna to nickel and dime its guests for overpriced "Spirits Packages" or "Soft Drinks Packages" the open bar is as welcome a sight as Miss Universe at a monastery! Con: With NCL furnishing up to 200 of the 400 guests at its TH night performances, the views of NCL guests are noteworthy-- Don't fall for the "roasted pig with an apple in its mouth" commercials! Let me explain. NCL guests are bombarded, both on the en-suite TVs and all throughout the Shore Excursions and Guest Services area, with dramatic photos of large juvenile pigs, slow-roasted for hours over a rotisserie spit and with an apple shoved in its mouth. In fact, the TV commercials for the excursion even include dramatic images of the roasted pig being paraded into the dining hall in grandiose fashion! The reality is as disappointing as the Lakers season has been, to date! Fact: There's zero rotisserie pig! The only pork served guests is a mound of Kahlua Pork, a shredded pork that strikes me as the Polynesian equivalent of carnitas! Los Angelenos, take note: Try the shredded pork at the Luau Kalamaku and tell me they didn't CATER IT IN FROM L&L HAWAIIAN FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS?! Lol. Pro tips: Take advantage of the open bar, but note that you'll only have approximately one hour to an hour and fifteen minutes after you've been seated before they close the bar. So, even though my wife and i are generally non-drinkers, we happily availed ourselves of eight Blue Hawaiians, Mai Tais or Kona Beers. Sheeeeeeeeit. Especially with NCL-provided coach buses serving as our "designated driver" and it being the penultimate night of our weeklong cruise vacation! Grab your favorite food favorites quickly- Don't expect seconds. I particularly enjoyed the Hawaiian-style potato salad, which is actually a hybrid of potato and MACARONI salad, studded with green onions and diced squares of ham. Ditto for the aforementioned Kahlua Pork....but when I went back for seconds, the staff had already removed both dishes! Don't believe the multiple announcements regarding the bounty of food. The emcee repeatedly announced, "In Hawaii, we eat until we are tired, not until we are full." See above comments. Avail yourself of the gifted artisans and craftsman whose booths line the graceful courtyards outside the dining hall, just "Caveat Emptor" ("buyer beware."). One talented craftsman was selling handcrafted iPhone cases for $45 each. I found a matching Koa wood case for my Galaxy S22-plus on Amazon Prime for half the price! Overall, I'd hand out the following grades: * Grounds: FIVE STARS * Quality of Food: FOUR STARS * Quantity of Food: TWO STARS * Show & Entertainment: FIVE STARS Enjoy the superlatively talented dancers, singers and fire-performers, regale in the sights of the lush, overgrown but stately grounds, hued the color of matte emeralds. Be quick to fill up your glass at the open bar. Be quicker to grab your favorites at the, ahem, "all you can eat" buffet (before they disappear!) and appreciate the majestic culture, song and dance of the Polynesian people! read more

Came here with the family, it was my kids first time at a luau. I've attended another one in Maui and it was way better than this one. The show was nice and interesting. The food was bland, and I think this is the reason for the stars in my review. I expected amazing full of flavor food as I've had before at a luau but this wasn't it at all! Service was fairly quick, the local boutiques before the dinner was nice, made time pass by a lot quicker. I don't think I'd recommend this luau unfortunately read more

We had a fun time, rode the train around the plantation, got the pictures taken, explored the vendors. Food was good and drinks were strong..service was excellent, staff was very organized. The show was amazing! Loved the fire dancers!! We had a great time! Cost was painful, especially for our large family, but I would say worth it. read more

Luau Kalamaku is so much fun! Our family of four showed up early to the Kilohana Plantation at 4:15 for the 40 minute train tour, which was very exciting for our two boys, ages 9 and 4. The 4 year old is on the spectrum, and he just loves train rides. The tour guide was witty and funny, and he gave us the history of the farm in a very interesting way. He explained their current sustainability strategy, and did so in a way which was easily digestible for kids. Then we stopped for a super-duper, extra fun encounter with horses, cows, and wild pigs, which blew my older son's mind. After a cool, refreshing ride through a rain forest, we arrived at the luau! I work in live events, so I'm just going to cut the the chase and say "5 Stars" all around. The music was beautiful, the staff and performers are friendly, kind, and very accommodating to families with special needs children. And the food! Oh my goodness. Delicious! When we packed up to take our sleepy boys home, they were wide-eyed and so impressed with all of the good vibes and magic. We really had a good time, and we are so grateful for all of the little extra touches. Thank you for everything. We will definitely be back! read more
