We started in their pristine gardens and heard about the history of Smith's and learned about the traditions of Hawaiian luaus. After we transitioned to the dining area for open bar and the luau feast. The luau feast was INCREDIBLE! I went up for seconds and my husband went up for thirds. The roasted pig was his favorite bite of the night, while mine was the teriyaki steak. We both loved the rice pudding for dessert, as well as the coconut cake and fresh fruit. All we expected! Note: going early to spend extra time in the gardens isn't really an option. They open at 4:30. They take your picture on the way in ($30, ready at the show if you want to purchase it), then we boarded the tram. The guide shares about the plants, views, some history, and points out many things along the ride. We were free to roam the gardens until the imu ceremony. Many beautiful plants, trees, picturesque spots. I can see why weddings happen here! I found a beautiful spent flower on the ground I was curious about and took it to one of the aunties. She didn't know, but immediately brought me to another family member who identified it right away. So helpful! You can claim your dinner spot if you'd like (groups are reserved, otherwise it's open) while everyone's exploringthe grounds. When it's time to open the imu, the host explains the culture and history in an engaging way, then it's time to eat! They have a good system for sending tables up to eat so nobody's rushing. Mai tais (open bar included) were smooth and delicious! Food was excellent, all you can eat. Plenty of time to eat, enjoy company, listen to the music (wasn't too loud--yay!) while talking, and then we headed to the show. The seats were padded stadium seats, and rather comfortable. The show lasted about 50 minutes. Professional and nicely done. We both loved our entire time there. We'd been told this is the one to go to, but we searched Yelp anyway. It was clear from the reviews it was a good fit for us and we were not disappointed. Spendy, yes, but for dinner and a show (and the tour through the gardens), it's not that bad. This was our third time attending a Luau in Hawaii and I would say it was overall the best one. The side trip to the Fern Grotto is worth the extra expense. The Gardens are beautiful, lots of birds, including peacocks wondering around. The food was plentiful and tasty. They were very organized and quick in getting everyone through the food lines. Servers were friendly and attentive. There was plenty of food if you wanted seconds. The Luau itself was just OK. They have a nice theater and stage with a volcano shooting up flames. Some of the costumes were fluorescent and just didn't fit the vibe. The dancers were also just ok. I would have preferred a more traditional performance without the theatrics. The doors only open at 7:30pm if you're just coming for the show but it's enough time to walk to the theatre area (you can also take the tram for the short distance). Located in Kapaa, Kauai at the same entry to Waimea River. Not sure why it's $$$ because it's cheaper than the other major luau on the island. We came on a Monday night in January. Weather is around 65-75F. You start on a short tram tour of the Tropical Paradise, which is the grounds owned by the same family for years. For kids and bird lovers, there is bird seed for purchase at the entrance. These birds will run right up, so cute! There are peacocks, goose, wild birds. I regret not buying this. Shortly after is the revealing of the Imu, as they show you how they cook the pig, curated by Smith grandson. You can reserve your seat by putting a jacket there, or removing the red napkins off the cups. Large groups have tables reserved, but smaller parties can grab the seats before the Imu ceremony. Love how we give thanks before the meal. Booze - there is a cocktail bar on the right, and pre-made mai tai's on the left bar. You can double fist 2 at a time and can come back for more when you are done with your 2. The bartenders were so friendly. I highly suggest the mai tai. Food - such generosity at this family buffet. There was mahi mahi, pork, beef, chicken, fried rice, mashed potatos, salad, some other salads, desert. It just goes on. After everyone gets their turn, they call you up table by table, you're free to get refills until it's time for the show. The pork was really really good! Also try the Poi. There is singing and dancing the hooky lau after the meal. It's old skool karaoke and tik tok dances. They also have a dance to celebrate honeymoons and anniversaries. Show - there were really good live musicians and singers, the female and male dancers and the fire dancer. It seems very mom and pop, but well done in my opinion. The show was about 1 hour long. Tip, you can bring your last drink along to the show. Photos - Cost is $30 for a physical print, no digital copy. You take these as you come in. You get a shell lei, its not flowers. DEC2025 Luckily we were able to fit this in and drag some friends with us to experience it. The first time we were in Kauai everything had been sold out months ahead so we weren't able to do the luau experience. Family owned and operated, they have been doing the luau for 40 years, and the river fern grotto tours for 80 according to the intro. We were given a trolley ride around the grounds giving background for the area with some time to walk around the grounds ourselves. We then learned the history for pigs being roasted for the luau. It's interesting to know that it comes from other islands and how things have developed over time. The buffet was set up nicely with open bar near all of the seating. Everything was organized that people would be able to go by table as directed by the staff to get food. If it wasn't your turn yet, you'd be listening to live music from the stage, getting dessert, and there were two bars available to get drinks. One with making drinks to order, the other with punch and mai tais. The food was solid, and it was great to have some veggie and salad options. Favorite things were the chicken adobo, sweet potatoes, and the dessert. The fresh fruit and coconut pudding really hit the spot. Everything else was cooked well, and it was easy to get whatever we needed. Once this was completed, we headed to the stage area for a show with multiple dances highlighted and options to purchase pictures that were taken in the beginning when we had first arrived. And thank goodness since that was before the food and drinking. The show was fun to watch highlighting multiple cultures and dances over the course. My first luau on Kauai many years ago was waterside, so that was very memorable to me, but Smith's surpasses it on many marks. Probably the best luau we've ever been to! Everyone talks about Smith's and raved about them when I told them we were going here! And it did not disappoint. A truly immersive experience! The viewing area for the imu ceremony is large and open, which allowed more people to see it compared to other luaus we've been to. Walter made us all feel like a part of the Smith ohana! They supply benches for seating during the ceremony and water, which was appreciated. Following the ceremony, we make our way to the covered pavilion for the buffet. Open bar, for those who are into that, and fruit punch and water for those who aren't lol. They dismiss the tables one at a time for the buffet, so if you're hungry, be prepared to wait your turn lol. The food was amazing, and all-you-can eat. Everything was cooked perfectly. They shut everything down quickly towards the time when they want everyone to make their way to the performance. There are restrooms by the pavilion, as well as by the theater. There's live entertainment while you eat and they even invited some people on stage to do the hukilau. My oldest joined in on the fun. When you go to the performance, they're out in front of the theater selling the photos they took of your party upon entering the grounds. There doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the theater, which is covered for the audience, but still open-air. The show is FANTASTIC and runs about an hour. There are a lot of free-range chickens, roosters and peacocks on the grounds, so watch your step in the dark! Parking is on grass/dirt and they have parking attendants helping you upon entry. We started off with a group photo and took a short tram ride through the gardens: they have different themed gardens like a Japanese garden and some wildlife like peacocks and goats. You have about an hour to walk around and explore on your own, before the imu ceremony where they unearth the cooked pig. It was very cool to learn about how they cook the pig and the history of their family business. Three generations actively participate in the business, starting with the matriarch who turns 91 this year! We next had dinner - which was an elaborate all you can eat buffet with pork, beef, chicken, fish and probably 7-10 side items including mac salad and the notorious poi. The kalua pork was by far my favorite!! And don't forget dessert - fresh fruit, coconut cake, and jello! They also have an open bar, albeit the drinks are incredibly watered down probably to limit the amount of intoxicated behavior after 1.5 hr of unlimited drinks. However, as someone who typically sticks to one drink, I would've liked just one strong cocktail. The amount of people they can host in one night is truly insane - I would guess there were at least 500 people there. The staff is incredibly friendly and they provide live entertainment and even a hula dance lesson during dinner. Then we moved over to the outdoor theatre around 7:30 for the show, which was genuinely jaw dropping! They had live music, fire, a volcano backdrop, and dancers that would rotate through different cultural dances of those who migrated to Hawaii, including Tahitian, Filipino, New Zealand, and Japanese traditional dances - among others. They also had performances with fire (including the fire knife dance), which were my favorite and left us genuinely shocked. The show lasted a long time, and I believe we left around 9 pm. The only criticism I have is that they charge for the group photo they take at the beginning of the luau, which I feel should be free given the price of the event (at least a free digital copy and pay extra for the printed copy with a paper frame). Nevertheless, if you want a printed or digital copy it is $30. I would definitely recommend this luau to anyone in Kauai and hope future generations of the Smith family keep it going for a long time. read more

This was a highlight of our trip to Hawaii! It was well organized and friendly. They are well organized and personal. Even though he was there were over 500 people at the event, the owner came by each table and greeted people as family. The cultural history and food was excellent. It was surprising that a buffet could taste so good. The hula dances on stage were beautiful. I only wish I understood what the words were in the songs and what the dance moves meant. Took some family here since it was their first time to Hawa'i. Having been to Lu'au at the Polynesian cultural center and Lu'au Kalamaku, I was expecting more of a show telling a story. For Smith's, we did the show only. I was surprised when it was a several smaller separate performances sequentially versus telling a story. The stadium seating was also a little hard to see since you're set back further away from the stage vs being at tables surrounding the stage in the round. They take beautiful group photos, then lead you on a stunning tour of the grounds. Just the grounds alone are worth the price of admission, absolutely gorgeous and filled with the most breathtaking peacocks I've ever seen roaming freely. After the traditional pig ceremony, the open bar opens, and it's the real deal. The drinks were noticeably stronger than the $20 cocktails we were buying at our hotel. The food was fantastic too, the Kalua pork and teriyaki beef were our absolute favorites. I do think you get good value, and everything was well organized, so the entire night ran smoothly. The end was interactive as they called some people up on the stage to learn to hula dance, and quite a few people from our group were called up which was fun to see. The night ended with the show which felt very long, but we were also tired from spending the day exploring the island. It was cool to see the different cultures and dances though and the fire knife dance was definitely a highlight. I do wish the seating was a little more comfortable, but it was nice that the area was covered in case it's raining. Note that they do have an option for "show only" tickets too if you want to do dinner on your own. The performance pieces were cool and really enjoyed the fire/other traditional dances. The kicker is my rental car wouldn't start in their parking lot and the hula dancers made sure we were kosher. Shoutout Tiana Elena and Jay and other dancers (sorry, we are fighting against my poor memory of names) and more. They literally called one of their moms to try and figure it out, and refused to leave until they knew we were good. WOW, what a luau! This was our first time in Kauai & we didn't know which luau would be the perfect fit for us. Come to find out, Smith's is the best!! You first check in at the front by the parking lot. After checking in you are taking a photo with a couple of the dancers that will later be in the luau. At first, it was a bit awkward. One of the dancers (from the photo op) seemed to be in a pretty bad mood. Good thing the photo took 5 seconds because after that, we had a blast! You are taken on a tram ride around the botanical garden & the driver is sharing really interesting facts about Kaua'i, different plant species, & the history of the luau. After the tram ride you are left to wonder off for about an hour. This is the perfect opportunity to take photos, see some of the plants up close, & wait for the imu ceremony. After the imu ceremony comes the open bar!! Please be warned those drinks are STRONG!! They will get to you very quickly! While you are having dinner (which was phenomenal), there is live music playing & a couple of dancers dancing as a pre show to the main event! The food consists of fried rice, pineapple bread, guava bread, salad, mashed potatoes, stir vegetables, adobo chicken, teriyaki beef, & kuloa pork. Phenomenal!!! Now, the main event. Talk about production!! Wow!! After dinner you walk about 5 minutes to the out door lagoon theater. There's so much live music, dancers, fire effects, a waterfall, & an erupting volcano!! First of all the views are so beautiful. I mean I took a hundred photos, give or take, because it was just breathtaking. Once we arrived, we got shell beads, a photo, and then they took us of a tram like ride to just take a quick look around the land. Before we saw the Imu celebration, the transitioning was a little long but with all of the birds, it was entertaining enough. We saw the Imu, which starts the luau, but it was hard to see because of all the people. (sorry I'm not very good at remembering what they said) The food was very good, especially since I am a picky eater. I enjoyed the chicken and the coconut cake, but my parents were able to eat everything because they are not picky like me. After dinner, we walked around to take photos and toward the seating place for the luau. The luau show was amazing, but the seating was NOT the most comfortable. I can understand completely why it was like that, to accommodate those who are wheelchair accessible, but I kept sliding off the seating and it was not very fun. The only other complaint I have is that the guests were not very kind when we visited, but that 100% not the Smith's family worker's fault. If you are ever on the island of Kauai in Hawaii, I would definitely recommend you spend a night at the luau because you will not regret it. read more

Fun all around Luau. I've been too countless ones, every island and always gotta do a Luau for the honey. This is a nice family run operation with above average food, lovely grounds to stroll and feed / enjoy all the chickens, peacocks and other birds. A nice thing or not is the lack of any vendors hawking Hawaiian trinkets, just explore the gardens before the luau and chill after dinner before true show. The show has nice music, lovely stage and viewing but with about average dancing. Pork, Beef teriyaki, macaroni salad, as well as coconut cake were awesome. Other things were typical luau decent and enjoyable. If there as any one thing to be improved was variety of fruit , only papaya and pineapple. The food far exceeded my expectations for a banquet style meal at a tourist focused event. All the meat was cooked perfectly, super flavorful, and juicy. It was a great value for dinner, open bar, open access to the beautiful garden grounds, and the show. I do wish that we could have gotten into the grounds earlier as they were so big I felt like we barely had any time to explore. The seating for the show is very narrow benches with everyone crammed in so it wasn't the most comfortable and the show didn't really hold the kids attention (7 and 9 yrs) but I loved the historical approach and inclusion of all different types of dance! read more

Honestly the best luau we have ever been to! I love that the whole family is involved, which is all 3 generations! It is truly amazing to see. It is noted to arrive at 5 pm, so that you can view the whole garden. However, we were unfortunately late and arrived at 5:45 pm. They still allowed us to park and guided us to where we needed to go. Apparently, we weren't the only ones running late as other parties followed suit. However, if you do want to get a parking spot much closer to the entrance, you should arrive by 5 pm. Seating though, if you want a specific seat, it is a rush to get a good seat by the front for the buffet portion. However, if you have a party of 6 or more, they recommend booking that in advance because there is reserved seating for you. It is also a rush to get into the theater. If you want a good seat, i recommend leaving dinner early. However, we left dinner just 15 minutes before the luau began and we got good seats. Up to you. The performances were immaculate. Loved seeing different cultures being performed that blend with the Hawaiian culture of dance. You can record and take pictures of the performances, however, PLEASE turn off your flash. We arrived with easy parking. Easy check in. They have umbrellas for you to use if it starts to rain. We were give. A shell lei then directed to follow the walk way where we seen Several chickens and a beautiful peacock. We seen people feeding the birds which was cute. It started to sprinkle so we decided to go to the covered dinner area to claim our seats since it's open seating. They did have some tables reserved for large parties. We claimed our seat by taking down the napkin and moving the silverware around. We sat right in front to enjoy the live music. Once the rain subsided, we went to where they do the pig ceremony, where they did the pig out of the ground. The MC tells us how they they do it and gives us some background about their tradition. Once they dig it out, we are asked to grab a drink and head to our seat. The bartenders had the drinks lined up and ready to go! My favorite was the blue Hawaiian. They call tables in order for dinner. It goes rather quickly. There is live music while you wait. They have 6 lines that go through the buffet lines. They have salad, pasta, pork which I loved, fish, tri tip was so good and so was the chicken. I really enjoyed it. It was nice to know that the workers there are part of the Smith's family. I enjoy the nice service. They had a hula dancer perform, then called people up On stage to practice hula, pointed out some anniversaries and birthdays which was a nice touch. After dinner they did last call and directed us to head to the amphitheater. It was open seating so it's nice to get there early. This is where you can decide to purchase your picture. We kind of last minuted wanted to do a luau while on the island so that brought us to a very lengthy google search on what luau to choose on the island! A lot of places only do luaus on specific days and we were really needing one for a Friday. We found Smith's and called right away and they said they could put us on the waitlist for our party of 6. We agreed even though there were roughly 20 people in front of us and we got a call the day before saying we could have a spot for the Friday luau! So keep that in mind if it says they are full, sounds like they have a lot of flexibility with adding people! This was unlike my first luau experience because you get to walk the amazing grounds before, watch as they take the imu pig out of the ground, dining in a dining hall while having unlimited drinks then walk over to the "theatre" in which the actual show is held. Smith's Family Garden Luau - The food you get, the imu ceremony - Music Venues Near Me - Kapaa, Hawaii

This was my second time at Smiths. I have been to other luau's on the island and they each have their individual personalities and vibes but I this Smiths is superior. First and foremost. the property is by far the most beautiful I have seen. If you arrive an hour early, you get a train tour around the property where they point out various plants and history about the property. Afterwords you can explore the area on foot which is incredible. Then it's time to unbury the Kalua pig in a ceremony. It was entertaining to watch, even though there is quite a crowd surrounding the area. Next.. unlimited mai tais and full bar. That's where it gets even better. Then the food is served buffet style. Excellent kalua pork, teriyaki chicken and many other tasty dishes. After filling up, time for the show. There are many dances from around the world. It lasts for around an hour. The fire spinning dancer was the best. Overall a great experience not to be missed if you come to Kauai. read more

Love this Smiths Family Luau. We had a gift certificate to use and luckily we were able to attend. They are always booked so when they had a cancelation, we jumped at the chance. We been here before and know what to expect. This is the only luau that has a tram ride around their grounds. Love the ride, comes with narration also. The property is very big and beautiful. It has all the plants, bird life, and even big fish in their lagoons. I once saw a bunch of big papio or ulua in them. They do their imu ceremony after the tram ride. Then it's cocktails and chow time. Love the food. They prepare it in their kitchen on property. The variety of food selections is great. Dessert too, but the haupia and Jello was not sweet enough, couldn't eat it all. The coconut cake was amazing. Nice to see some Christmas trees decorated. Don't get to relaxed as you got to take a walk to their auditorium for the entertainment. Pee first. We enjoyed the show. Being its December, they did a few Christmas songs. The live band in the hut was great. The guys sang beautifully. The best luau on the island. Someday we'll be back again. read more

The Smith Family Garden Luau is exactly what I hoped a Hawaiian luau would be--genuine, welcoming, and just the right amount of festive without feeling like a theme park show. I loved the laid-back, family-run vibe that made the whole evening feel personal and warm, like being invited to a backyard party (if your backyard had peacocks, an imu pit, and a stage surrounded by a lush tropical paradise). Dinner was delicious and plentiful--bring your appetite--and the show afterward was a beautiful blend of storytelling, music, and dance. It never felt overproduced or cheesy, just heartfelt and entertaining from start to finish. A perfect Kauai memory. read more

Food was amazing and there was plenty of it! The gardens are beautiful. Be sure you get there on time for the tour. The show was nice, but a little slow for our 9 year old. I recommend getting to the theater right away to get a good spot, especially if you have any shorties. read more

If there's a Luau you must visit in Kauai, def consider Smith's Family Garden Luau. I think I did a good amount of research, and Smith's Family has a number of things that fit what my family and I enjoy. Smith's estate is HUGE! If you are a big fan of flowers, plants, trees, nature, etc. etc., you will for sure enjoy yourself. They take the word "family" seriously because you can just feel the at-home vibes as soon as you are greeted. With the number of people who visit their garden, not once will you not feel unwanted. Before you enter, you are told of the itinerary for the evening which starts off with receiving a shell lei, taking a photo, the option to take a tram ride to tour the garden or you can walk. I suggest getting there as early as you can, take the tram then go for a walk. I don't want to say too much about the garden, but just know it is worth walking around. Right at 6 pm is when the Imu Ceremony which is the unearthing of a pig. There are a few benches around the underground oven. Once the Imu Ceremony is finished, grab your cocktails at the bar and get ready to feast! The food was DELICOUS! Salad, bread, poi, kalua pork, chicken adobo, fish, teriyaki beef, dessert... oh man! Come hungry because you will want seconds of thirds! I came back twice for more poi and more kalua pork! After dinner and after a good amount of cocktails, make your way to the theater to enjoy the beautiful cultural dances of he Hawaiian Islands, Polynesian Islands, Philippine Islands, Japan, etc.! I absolutely love how Smith's Family paid tribute to the different cultures who played a huge part in the growth of the Hawaiian Islands. It was definitely heartwarming to watch! This was the best luau I've ever been to (and I've been to several)! The food was remarkably good for a buffet, the imu ceremony was great (with excellent narration), the luau was kid-friendly, and the main show was fantastic! The food was pretty good, and we especially enjoyed the Kalua pork, mahi mahi, and teriyaki beef. The dessert table was quite nice as well, and we really like the rice pudding, haupia (coconut jello), and coconut cake. The drinks were all too sweet for my liking. The entertainment during dinner was nice, and we appreciated the fact they engaged little ones (my 6 year old daughter loved the opportunity she was given to go on stage and learn the hula)! The main show was great. The theater style seating was nice, and the narration was helpful. My young daughter loved seeing Pele the fire god rise from a volcano; my husband and I were impressed by the talented fire dancer. We truly had a great time here (despite being a bit worried going in after reading the mixed reviews on Trip Advisor) - this was awesome! read more
