I recently met a gentleman from Lil Butcher Shoppe at my local Rouses who was cooking up smoked sausages and handing out samples. I tried several different flavors and my favorites were the pineapple and jalapeno. They are now making their sausages available here and I picked up some right away. Lil Butcher Shoppe is located at 1910 Broadway Dr in Hattiesburg, MS, and has been proudly serving the Pine Belt region since 1991. This family-owned and operated "olde-fashioned" butcher shop offers a wide variety of fresh, high-quality meats, local products, and excellent customer service. From its humble beginnings at Tip's gas station to its current thriving location, Lil Butcher Shoppe has become a beloved fixture in the community and now making their sausages products available in stores. Their history, brothers David Lawson and Steven Dyar founded Lil Butcher Shoppe over three decades ago, drawing inspiration from their family's history in the service industry. They even sold Wagyu Beef... the deli-cuts were out of this world ..WOW .. A slew of choices... including my fav .. Hog-Head-Cheese .. Also great baked goods including super-duper breads... Friendliness in customer service is really lacking these days! Very disappointed! Have shopped here for years and meats and sales have always been worth the drive. However, not anymore! Too many other good choices including a new market that is very similar and much closer to home! And, the new market has the friendliest and most helpful staff! OMG, small but QUALITY products. Nice steaks. They teased me about my purchase of olive loaf, but unlike other places THEY ACTUALLY HAD IT IN STOCK. Bought a lot of other products and will definitely be back. Service people were awesome personable and fun to enter act with unlike most impersonal stores. Love this place. Although the meats that one immediately sees on display are meant for cold cuts and are from the national companies like Sara Lee, the two side displays are full of locally slaughtered beef and pork goods. In fact, they will vacuum-seal and marinate any steak you might pick in their own custom marinade for 75cents (I'm told it makes for a steak as tender as a microwaved stick of butter). Their pork loins will set you slavering, and I can't even come close to fitting their slices of bacon in a skillet without cutting them down to size. Their cheese selection is a bit poor, but they do carry the locally-sourced products from Country Girl Creamery (located in Wiggins, about 35mins South from here) including their butter, cheese, and both the Cream Line Whole Milk as well as the Cream Line 2% (the fat is reduced naturally by literally skimming the cream off the top of the milk, as I'm told by one of my coworkers in the ER who is also co-owner of the creamery). They happen to have the best prices for these local products. They have a wall of freezers full of veggies and breaded goods ready to be fried and a few frozen seafood options (that I honestly wouldn't buy, but that's just me being a seafood snob; I'm sure they're passable). They have a small selection of fresh vegetables, some sacks of potatoes, various sauces and dry rubs, charcoal, and other odds and ends that one might want to use to augment your cooking experience. The best of which are their seafood stuffed baked potatoes (either shrimp or crawfish, depending on the season) which come in packs of two for $5. Toss 'em in the oven as your meal is coming together to have a quick side if you're feeling lazy. Super tasty. There are also stuffed jalapenos, but buying those isn't very cost effective considering how cheap jalapenos are around here. If you are there for some cold cuts, you can go ahead and get some sandwich bread as well. Both Nature's Own and Bunny bread are represented alongside both mass-produced and locally baked buns. Another solid budget option is their cuts of mis-cut chicken breast, sold at the low, low price of $1.50 a pound. They package these daily. Goes without saying that normal cuts of chicken breast, both bone-in and boneless, are available around the cost of $3 to $3.50 a pound. They also have the various other chicken cuts for sale. One thing I want to try in the future is some of their in-house sausage which they offer in a huge variety of flavors. As for now, I stick to my low-budget solution of cold cuts, bread, cheese, milk, and a touch of bacon with a few pounds of mis-cut chicken breast. read more

We drive from Laurel a few times a month. Always fresh and nicely priced. They have just about anything you could want or need. Highly recommend the "Sweet Fire" sausage. Steaks are a big hit also. This is the place to go if you want fresh meat. The case is full of various cuts of beef, pork, chicken sausage and more. If you don't like what you see, tell them what you want and they will cut it to your taste. We were looking for a prime rib for Christmas and these people came through with a beauty. They also have a nice variety of frozen vegetables and other things that make a meal easier to prepare. I am going back to try the stuffed potatoes. They have a variety of them and I want to try them all. Skip the grocery stores around Hattiesburg. Get your fresh meat here. read more

The Lil Butcher Shoppe is about to be a lil less lil when they move into their new, larger building next month. The people here are friendly, and they've got an assortment of steak cuts, pork, chicken, and lots of different sausages. They also have frozen seafood and sides. We usually visit every couple months and load up our freezer. I'm eager to see what they do with more space. It would be nice to see more exotic stuff and some fresh seafood, too. read more
