First time here and ordered the small seafood platter which mine came with one piece of catfish, six piece of fried shrimp, two hush puppies, and a side of fries. The staff is super friendly. I loved how convenient this place is. The best thing that I got was a shrimp that was a five out of five, the catfish was four out of five, everything else was good. The food was great. We absolutely love the butterfly shrimp! We added that shrimp to the poboy instead of their regular shrimp. The seasoning that is on the butterfly shrimp should be added to their catfish filets. It would taste amazing! The customer service was stellar on the day that we went a week ago. If you like fried catfish or shrimp you need to go to this place! They have the best proboys around (shrimp, catfish, oyster etc.) and very good plate lunches with catfish or shrimp plus side dishes. Their gumbo is extremely good and we get it every time we go. read more

My catfish and shrimp platter was extremely good with big portions (including of the two delicious sides I picked: greens and stewed cabbage) for a very reasonable price. Very polite folks who took my order. Don't expect linen tablecloths and fancy decor--that's just not the kind of place this is. For the price and type of order-at-the-counter place that it is, I almost gave it five stars: my only hesitancy is that they don't say on the menus or have it posted anywhere where the catfish and shrimp came from--I have a feeling it's probably not the U.S. / Mississippi / Gulf Coast (which probably contributed to the low prices). If I find out where their seafood comes from I'll be happy to write another review and give them five stars (comparing them to similar price and ambiance restaurants). read more

The food is hot and fresh and seasoned to my taste. I had the ground mullet plate. The fish was fried with a light batter. Side items cabbage was cooked to my flavor a little crunch not over cooked. I was in Hattiesburg picking up my daughter from the University of Southern Miss when I found this low key gem. Hands down the best gumbo I've ever had that my mama didn't make! This is not a roux based gumbo, it's okra based which is how my family makes it. Plentiful with shrimps, sausage and crabs. I ate lunch here with 5 other people around July 22, 2011. We were attending a family reunion and wanted to eat some real southern food. A family member suggested we try Southern Seafood. From the outside, Southern Seafood looks like any regular neighborhood store, but once you're inside you'll know this is anything but a regular store. One side of the shop has fresh caught seafood which you can buy. I bought fresh shrimp. The front of the shop offers soda, beer, and food items. On the other side of the shop they serve the best soul food I've tasted outside of my mom's kitchen. I ordered, which was full of shrimp, crab, okra and it had a huge crab claw in it. The gumbo was tasty and well seasoned. I had two bowls. The catfish was fried a golden brown. The black-eyed peas were perfect and tender. The fried chicken was juicy and crunchy. Good food, deep fried farm raised catfish for the wife with sides of yellow squash with ham/onions, collard greens, she enjoyed the meal with a great corn bread biscuit. Mine was 6 deep fried shrimp that were butterflied and very good, along with 6 deep fried oysters, I believe I received more than 6 each though, my sides were delicious, pork and beans along with green beans with ham/onion, big hush puppies came with it, nothing special about them though. Today was the first time I've stopped in here. Fresh seafood available plus plate lunches and sandwiches. I ordered a shrimp poboy. It was the best I've had in a long time. Shrimp was cooked just right and the bread was nice and chewy. They have a little dining section to sit at too but be warned. The building smells of fresh seafood so if you don't have the stomach for that then get it to go. The staff was very friendly and talkative. I'll definitely be stopping in more often. read more

Called two weeks in advance to reserve fresh crawfish for an event for 30 people. Was told that they would not reserve in advance to call the Wednesday prior to the Saturday event. Called them on the Wednesday and Teresa told us that they starting taking orders yesterday (Tuesday) and they had none left. She is very sorry but that there is nothing she can do. The seafood platter was good, great customer service, but the gumbo was lackluster in my opinion different from what I'm use to.

It is hard to imagine why people are not lined up, out the door, and backed down the street to eat here. NOBODY anywhere from the Gulf Coast to New Orleans even comes close to the fried seafood here... the fried shrimp and oysters are scrumptious. And the owners could not be nicer folks! Southern Seafood has some of the very best food in Hattiesburg and the best price for fresh catfish filets - $3.99 lb and when crab meat is avaiable $14.99 for the lump and $13.99 for the dark claw my favorite over salad greens. The food is delish, freshly prepared and great price. They even taught me how to cook fresh flounder and I'd never cooked it before and it came out wonderful. They also have vac packed frozen red snapper at a reasonable price. I even eat the gumbo here and I'm not fond of gumbo, creole or cajun seasoning--and fresh shrimp -- they'll even clean it for you!!!
