Cafe Delphine - Surprised good Chicken and Sausage Gumbo

The walk up to the register and placing your order is a little awkward but thankfully there weren't any customers in front or back of us so there was no wait but this just feel inefficient. The cashier was very friendly, we order two cheeseburgers with fries and I ordered a cup of chicken and sausage gumbo - to be honest my expectations weren't very high but after only paying $1.11for the entire meal I really didn't care. I probably shouldn't prejudge something I'm not familiar so I was blown away by what arrived at our table - the chicken and sausage gumbo was outstanding and being that I'm a self proclaimed aficionado of everything gumbo trust me this is legit - the burgers were equally surprising to me a great butter and toasted bun a great beef patty and fresh condiments (I love when they shred the lettuce). The unlimited self-serve drink station was nice and it was well maintained and clean as was the entire restaurant. We had a decent day at the slots so I hope to return before leaving the area and with a little luck and more comps it's likely we'll return and try something different and do a repeat on the gumbo...

I took a chance and tried the gumbo and let me tell you, it was very good! It was so good in fact, I went and did a little gambling then went back and got another bowl to go to the room. I was very pleasantly surprised.

Sitting right on the river, the views alone are worth the stop--especially around sunset when the water and boats set the perfect Louisiana backdrop. The food is where Reno's really shines, especially the buffet. It's well worth it--hot, fresh, and packed with Southern and seafood favorites that are full of flavor. Everything tastes homemade, not rushed, and the selection makes it easy to find something for everyone. You can tell they keep it stocked and take pride in what they serve. The drinks are cold, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it's the kind of place where you can pull up by boat or car and feel right at home. Friendly staff, a laid-back crowd, and live music on the right nights give it that true river-life vibe that keeps people coming back. If you're in Maurepas--or anywhere nearby--Reno's on the River is absolutely worth the stop, especially if you catch the buffet

But no dance floor and no outdoor seating. Well, anyway, we looked over the menu and decided to try the buffet. There was some good stuff there, and some mediocre. Apparently, the locals love it. They were coming in pretty thick by the time we left. Lots of fried seafood options (including alligator, soft shell crab, and frog legs), boiled shrimp, baked catfish, flounder, and a lot of other meat options. You don't see sauce piquant very often, so I had to try the deer sauce piquant from the buffet. It had good flavor, but not much "piquant." Had to add a little Crystal hot sauce. And the meat was tough and chewy. Needed a few more hours in the pot. The flounder was very good. Best thing I tried. The "Cajun style pork" was good, too - chunks of pork and smoky andouille with pineapple and oranges. Very good. The frog legs, fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, and alligator were all good, too. The fried catfish was muddy and dirty tasting (hate when that happens). If you're hungry, this is a nice place to get your fill of south Louisiana specialties - I could make an entire meal of the frog legs and Cajun style pork.

Asked if I could do my order over the phone to secure some crawfish, but she politely told me I needed to come and go through the drive thru. It's located on the left hand side of LA Hwy 70. There are two seafood places side by side but Craws and Claws is the first one before you get to the lake. Be careful where you turn in at because it's a drive thru set up, so you go in one side and come out of the other. If you mess up like I did, it's easy to turn around, just be careful. There was a dry erase board just off to the side of the drive thru where the whole menu shows you just what they have and the prices. I came on Monday April 26th at 2PM. The menu showed crabs, crawfish, shrimp, both live and boiled, corn, potatoes, sausage, mushroom, garlic, sausage, and more. The lady was so nice both in person and on the phone. She packaged our stuff up so securely and even gave us an extra bag just in case. Our price was $3.99/lb for boiled crawfish but depending on when you come that price will fluctuate. Early on in crawfish season it's pretty expensive, but toward the end of the season, things gets little more affordable. Hands down, that was the best crawfish I've had in a long time. It was spiced just right. We had not even one bad crawfish. It was all great. The potatoes and corn were excellent. The boudin did not disappoint. It was so tasty and delicious. We had a big ol' polar pop to help wash it all down. We paid about $58 and some change for 12lbs of very tasty crawfish....that included 2 orders of potatoes, 2 orders of corn, and 2 pieces of boudin. Not a bad price at all for the amount of food we got. We enjoyed every bit. We will be going back very soon.
