I know people who tell me they make brand new dresses out of old unused fabric, and Rita sells them saying they are originals from the 1930s. Lily Et Cie is The CREME DE LA CREME of vintage couture fashion in the world (no doubt!). Imagine this, a fully restored 1967 Ferrari 275GTB/4 owned by Steve McQueen (what a man's man) with a matching chasis & engine #10621 that went for more than $10 million at the Monterey Car week in Pebble beach just 2 years ago. That's Lily Et Cie (Lily). Lily's collections include some of the rarest and finest pieces from the 1920s to today. Rita, the owner of Lily has detailed documentation of these pieces to proof their authenticity like no other! This is not a store where you find your rare rock concert t shirts or your last year's Chanel or Herme bags. If you do see these pieces, for sure they are a one of a kind of a one of a kind for Lily to carry them in the store. I have to agree with Jared G., and I quote "Do not think you can just stop in, popping your bubble gum and tear through the racks." That's because these vintage pieces are so well groomed and cared for to such immaculateness that if they were in your closet, you wouldn't want anyone to touch them either. Rita is NOT a snob like many reviewers have put it. She is simply just taking extra extra care of her collections as well as her clients' consignment pieces, that's all. Lily's clients come from every corner of the world. She has clients fly in on a whim on their personal jets to average walk-ins like you and me because she has pieces that will suit every occasion and event. However that being said, most people that do come to Lily, almost always already know what they want and have done their homework. This is not like a Neiman or Barney's, and sure enough not your season to season collections at Herme or Chanel where you just walk in and can try everything on. Let's put it this way, Rita invented "personal shopping". She has been in the business so long that she knows if you are a serious shopper or just a looky loo. Besides serious buyers come to Lily, world renown designers come to Lily from Paris, Milan, London and New York and stay in Beverly Hills for weeks if not months for inspiration while they send their designer teams to other well known vintage stores merely to take notes. She was trying to sell these Dior pants for 12.2k while the market price was 2-3k (by the way lily I found and bought a new pair for 1.8k haha!!) . I have met nuns and queens with less grace and composure and somehow, I felt incredibly welcome and comfortable whilst surrounded by decades worth of era defining couture. I walked in today to shop and buy a gown, and instead I was greeted with complete disrespect, discrimination and racism. I was shocked. The old woman with the Payless shoes (owner) spoke extremely condescending to me and the old man (probably husband of owner) was following me around the store as though I was going to do something illegal. Nessled in between a nail salon and office building, door locked. Lights off. I rang the doorbell only to be greeted by someone who looked so bothered by the sight of a potential customer. I doubted my intuition and complied to her abrupt order of wearing an N95 mask. As I entered the store I was given explicit instructions on HOW to move items on the hanger along the rack. The owner stared at me with her assistant behind her smirking and commenting something under his breath. I thought I would just explain what I was looking for, only to be told that there is NOTHING in my size in the entire store !!!!!! At this point I was wondering if it was because I wasn't dressed nice enough ? Because of my brown skin color ? Because I was wearing a necklace representing my religious belief ? I am not overweight so I couldn't understand why I was being treated this way. She told me to go to the Beverly Connection where I would FIT in better !!!!! I decided to cut my losses and leave before I broke down in tears. As I'm leaving I hear her say "This store is for celebrities! A true original and a once In a lifetime experience. Lily and it's owners are the stewards of one of the most aggressively curated and spectacular collections of IMPORTANT garments in the world. My friend and I had the worst experience here today. The guy working there was incredibly condescending. We ducked in before our manicures, and he proceeded to tell us how to look at the clothing. "Keep the hangers far apart." Don't let it touch other items. Stay away from the racks in the back. It was the worst. It's pouring rain. We are your only customers. I told my friend how weird I thought he was and he then proceeded to try and explain why he was telling us how to BROWSE. We are middle aged women, I'm not used to be talked down to. Nor do I enjoy being dominated by Insecure and lonely men that clearly have mommy issues. I think if we were dressed for work and not a mani, he would have behaved with common manners. STAY FAR FAR AWAY YELPERS.... one of the worst STORES EVER. it is my daughters wedding at the four seasons, right up the street. so my sisters, my daughter and I are driving to the hotel when we spot this store and decide that we still need a dress or two, so we should stop by. we take one foot in the door, when this horrible looking woman greets us at the door. we explain that we are looking for some formal dresses. she cuts us off and blurts out... we only have dresses sizes 0-2...and they are very expensive, out of your price budget. my sisters who are maybe a size 6, are at first in shock, then start laughing at her. she is shocked that we are mocking her stupidity (considering my sisters net worth is bigger then her little brain could fathom) and walk past her and to the aisles of garbage she considers couture. thank goodness we were stable financially and mentally, or this rancid womans aggressive, rude, belittling behavior would have been very hurtful. If I could give this store five negative stars, I would. The owner of the store is disgusting and has absolutely zero customer service skills - almost as if she's striving to emulate the bitchy Beverly Hills sales people in the Pretty Woman movie. The second I walked into the store, she said to me - in the most condescending tone - "OK. You're doing to do me a big favor and not yank the clothing," even though I simply touched the dress with one finger. I then looked at her and said, "Yes, ma'am," to which she replied in an even more condescending tone (and this time, pointing at me with her index finger) - "especially with a dress that's worth $30,000." She then gave me a look of disgust and turned her back to me. I had just come from the nail salon, so she turns to me again (because she just couldn't resist), and says "and with wet fingers!" I replied to her "They're dry." She then shook her head in disgust and walked away from me again. First of all, in case you're wondering, I don't look like a thief or the stripper in Pretty Woman - I'm an attractive, sophisticated attorney who lives in the area. Secondly, what store owner treats their customers in this way and how does she expect to ever make a dime? Thirdly, Los Angeles is home to many wealthy "hipsters". For all she knows, she could be shoo-ing away a potential customer worth millions, simply because he/she doesn't look the part. Moral of the story: do not go here. Ever. This place deserves to go out of business. This store has the worst customer experience. I've only gone twice, and each time the owners have deterred me from trying on something because i was told it wouldn't fit me. As a vintage collector, I understand vintage; how it works and what will or will not fit me. But those are not the conversations I need to be having in defending myself when walking into a store. Walking into this store has to have been one of the best experiences of my life. I am a real lover of vintage fashion, and Ive worn it ever since I can remember. I have never seen clothing of this caliber anywhere ever outside of a museum. Both of the owners Rita and Michael have a true love for design and a knowledge of fashion history that is encyclopedic. Its amazing to hear them talk about the pieces they have there in their store, how they were constructed, the stories behind them- they really treat these clothes with respect. And I have to say that contrary to most of the negative reviews I read on this site, I had the most wonderful experience with both of them. They are wonderful, funny, and very direct about what works. And believe me- you do want their opinion because they have incredible taste. Rita is truly DISGUSTING human being. She might have impressive pieces, however nothing you can't find at her competitors who are much more pleasant. She is rude and uncalled for. The store looks like a junk yard with clothing jam packed into a rather large space. My friend walked and stepped on a flattened cardboard boxes that looked like trash on the floor. It was an accident, but Rita freaked out. She is truly an AWFUL person I have never experienced someone so revolting in my life. I am not a celebrity, I am not a size 0 and I just wandered into the shop because I happened to be staying at the hotel across the street. Rita was welcoming, helpful and fun. She steered me towards a gorgeous dress I would never have tried on without 'a push' and it was probably one of the most affordable in the whole store. She never name-dropped except to try and make me feel less embarrassed when my credit card didn't go through the first time, she told me "it happens to biggest celebrities you could imagine!".
