What a fabulous organization!…read more I have had the pleasure of volunteering this fall season with this non-profit at my daughter's elementary school. The entire purpose of the organization is to enhance both girls' physical activity levels and mental health/confidence. Our team of seventeen girls meets twice a week, right after school. We learn about solving conflict, helping others or making intentional decisions. We also really try to build up each girl's confidence and connection with one another. Besides having lessons, we also do a daily workout as we try to keep our bodies healthy and prepare for a 5k run! Additionally, my daughter is participating in GOTR this fall for the first time. She has been really pushing herself to get better and it has been so amazing as a mom to see her build up her classmates and to connect with some she wouldn't typically. I would recommend any parent of a daughter to have their child participate at least one season! Overall I have found the cause to be worthwhile. The Eastern Iowa chapter is run by some tremendous ladies. As a volunteer I feel I have been set up for success with all the tools I need to do the job I signed up for. As a parent, I see this age group of girls really benefiting from a positive experience like this as they learn who they are as young ladies. Girls on the Run is SO MUCH FUN.

The women behind GOTR of Eastern Iowa (Holly, Hailee, and Esther), do an excellent job organizing the program, which is saying a lot because they're choreographing every GOTR kid, coach, and running buddy in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. The GOTR lessons... The lessons I teach at every practice are well-presented in the curriculum book I receive at the start of the season. Holly has been great about meeting with me to replenish the occasional bag of markers or stack of construction paper. The practice curriculum does a wonderful job of incorporating positive life skills into running and active games. Through these lessons the girls discuss the best ways to cope with stress, why feeling a full spectrum of emotions is healthy, how to be a good teammate, what it means to have gratitude, the importance of being a good friend, and tons of other valuable lessons. My favorite part is without a doubt, getting to see the transformation the girls make over the course of a season; knowing that I'm playing a small role in their ability to grow into fierce, confident women is incredibly rewarding. The final 5k!... As a distance runner who's competed in an endless number of races, I have a huge appreciation for how well the end-of-season 5ks are executed. These 5ks have easily 1,000+ runners including 8 year old kids up to 75 year old Running Buddies, and yet I have never been short a time chip or race number for one of my girls. Not to mention how well they turn this celebratory 5k into a true 8-12 year old party with face paint and temporary hair color, fun kid-safe dance music, nice finishing medals, post-race snacks, and a high-energy finish line. I sure wish I had GOTR when I was an insecure 8-12 year old who hadn't discovered running yet. It's truly an incredible program.

They have enough structure and repetition that the kids know what to expect but also enough play time and different activities that they can work on social skills and do fun things like take the bus downtown to the library (don't worry - not until they're 3) and go for walks around the neighborhood and to the park by Horace Mann to play - either in the buggy or walking, depending on the kids. They don't have much turnover; in fact, in the almost 2 years we've been there, only one floater has left and that was because she went to work in her field of education. My favorite part is the teachers get excited every time the kids arrive - every day. This makes them feel so special and that people are happy they are there. The teachers also do a great job, in my opinion, of supervising but letting the kids do things their way. The other thing I like is that the teachers each have one day off per week so the same teacher is there when I drop her off and pick her up so I know how she did throughout the day. I've also called mid-morning to see how our daughter was doing and they are so happy to have parents call and check up - they always encourage us to call if we want. I'm worried sometimes because of the morning we've had or something like that - but our daughter is usually doing just fine. I did get a call one day saying she just wasn't herself so I went and got her and it turned out she just needed a break at home with mom. I really appreciated it though because I didn't have to wait until the end of the day to know she had a rough time and it was too late for me to do anything. I knew one of the teachers before we took our daughter there but it's the only place we looked at. When I went for the tour, it just felt right for us. We started when our daughter was about 20 months and she's now 3 1/2 and we love it more all of the time!

We called ahead to reserve the few items we were needing and they made it easy and chuckled bit when they realized all we needed were a few tables chairs and ice chest. What we felt was a large event wasn't a drop in the bucket to what Aero can support with their supplies! They even gave us a discount. We would definitely use Aero for the next shindig we host.

I honestly cannot say enough good things about Ace Electric. We decided to install a whole house…read moreback-up (natural gas) generator. The first company (not Ace) that came out gave us an estimate of over $40k - new builds have the gas and electric meters next to each other, but on our older home, they're on completely opposite sides of the house, so we knew there would be additional costs, but we were shocked at that total (which put the project out of reach for us). Called Ace for a 2nd opinion. Their estimate was much more reasonable, and their tech (Jesse) was extremely knowledgeable and discussed all aspects with us (we needed to update our electric panel, move the meter from inside to outside, and needed a plumber for one bit as well). They were responsive and helpful as we were getting those other updates done, Jesse was prompt with great communication and the install went smoothly (this was especially appreciated as we have salt water fish tanks, so we had to set up alternate power for them on the day of install, since they can't be without heater and pumps for more than an hour or two--not that big a deal but it did mean we had extension cords running out through the garage to the car, and the Ace team was fine working around that). We had one glitch the first week the self-test ran, we texted him and he came by within 24 hrs, knew exactly what the issue was and fixed it right away (at their--well, the manufacturer's-- cost). We know we can call them any time we have a problem or question, or in a year if we don't want to do the service/oil change, he said they're happy to do it, but they're also fine if we feel comfortable doing that ourselves. Honestly, it could not have been a better, more positive experience and I would highly recommend Ace to anyone for any home electrical needs!
