And I'm only kind of writing this review for my wife, who ACTUALLY looks good in these dresses. I'm writing this review for me. Selfish as it may seem, I don't care if this shop has the sweetest staff that always helps their customers find whatever it is they are looking for, and makes smart suggestions about other items that might be of interest. I do care a little bit that for some reason, they always happen to stock at least a couple dresses that make my wife look absolutely stunning.* But I really, truly care about not having to wander up and down Newbury Street in the rain, searching for this boutique that we come back to every time we're in Boston. Now that I've written this review, I will remember this dress shop, and we can just come straight here and avoid wandering into other, inferior boutiques. This is a smaller sized boutique. Nicely decorated. It can get a bit crowded in here if more than one group is in the store at a time. The clothes are very stylish and reasonably priced. They are designed in England. I love that part because I'm drawn to clothes with a European flare. They're different than what I am accustomed to seeing 99% of the time. The clothes from this collection flow, function, and are in great shades of color that I absolutely love. However, the part that I don't love is that the clothes are made in China. I'm tired of everything I own being made in China. If given the choice when it comes to buying clothes, I'm going to try to find items not made there because so much of what I own is already coming from there these days. And I think the American population as a whole is sick of it. Clothes makers are tricky...they won't put the label on top to advertise that part of it. Under the collar is the pretty label that makes you get excited that you're buying something uniquely designed from a far away place where everything is beautiful. When I asked where are these clothes made, the attendant had to search the garment. They attach it onto a small insignificant label on the inside of the dress towards the bottom. Almost as if they're embarrassed themselves to admit that's where the clothes really came from. I made a mistake already once not being keenly aware of where that label was hiding. I loved the way the dress fit me, and I loved the style. So I bought the dress. And it wasn't till I put it on again that I discovered the little tiny tag as well hidden towards the bottom of the dress. I was really disappointed. I just didn't have the heart once I got the garment home to return it. Not this time. I'm awaken by the need to find clothes that represent who I am and what I stand for. I want a different future for America than the one retailers are dictating we must conform to. Before I even get a chance to get attached to a cute item, I'm checking the label first. No more clothes from China. That's the stance I'm taking if given a choice as a consumer. read more

After reading the amazing Yelp reviews I was (SUPER) excited to take a little break from my work trip to Boston and scoot on over to Newbury st, as dresses are the bread and butter (and dessert) of my wardrobe. So, here's the good and the bad IMHO. Good: - Very well organized store! Solid dresses organized by color on one side of the main rack, prints on the other side. It's easy to see what they have. - Designs come in multiple colors and sometimes variations on the same style. - Wide range of summery dresses in fun colors and prints and some very cute designs. - Great location amidst lots of fun Newbury St. shopping - Wonderfully sweet, helpful, informative and efficient sales associate. Good on them for finding such a great hire! She was friendly without being fake and also tactfully kept the dressing room lines moving. The Bad: - Fabric, fabric, fabric!! Not one dress in here will last more than a couple seasons at most. Everything was made of very flimsy synthetic materials - lots of nylon and polyester stuff. Heavy use of chiffon. - Construction of these garments is weak. Stitching isn't reinforced and linings are very thin. Expect loose threads over time. - A lot of the dresses use smocking and shirring, which means that on some people the fabrics will ride up and bunch awkwardly. This can be avoided with a belt, but in general I've never been a fan of these sewing techniques. Because of the fabrics and construction, I didn't think $59 or $79 (the two most common price points) was that great a deal. The dresses are priced reasonably but not a steal. This is absolutely somewhere I'd go to grab a cute dress I intend to wear once or twice, whether it's to a wedding or a party or just to be on trend. I did actually buy one little summer dress in a navy blue shade (that hides fabric flaws) and a very pretty drape in the back. Gals on a budget with social agendas to dress for should definitely bookmark this place! Bottom line: This is a place to shop for the season, not to fill out your wardrobe. read more

Up until a few weeks ago I had no idea Lipstick existed, and I'm happy to spread the word now because I had an amazing time there this past Saturday. I was lured in by a Scoutmob deal (I don't usually frequent boutiques), and initially skeptical at how small the shop was, but it turns out that every dress, belt and sweater is hand-picked and something I would love to have in my closet; no hunting through racks here. The two ladies on staff were beyond friendly -- they made it their mission to ensure I left in love with what I bought. I modeled about eight outfits (from perfect-for-the-office to I-just-wanna-party) for them before we settled on a gorgeous crimson dress that I never would have picked up without encouragement. With such stellar customer service and affordable pricing, I will definitely return to fill out my spring/summer wardrobe. read more

i freaking adore lipstick. i love that it's a small boutique off newbury street, i love the selection, and i love how friendly everyone working here is :) i came in with a scoutmob deal and the sales assistant was very helpful and REALLY sweat. some of their items are a bit more expensive than your average forever or h&m but they do have sales pretty often. for example, i came in the middle of winter and all of their sweaters were on sale (awesome). plus everything you find here is going to be unique and also pretty damn comfortable. they have great casual clothing as well as some really cute items for special occasions. i already can't wait to wear my new dress to a friend's wedding this summer. i'll be back soon! read more

For what it is, this is a great boutique. They have such a cute selection of dresses in styles that will flatter all body types- seriously, the cuts on these dresses really do seem handpicked. The quality is decent and works with the price point- most of the dresses were under $100 but managed to look pretty classy. Most of the dresses run on the shorter side to above the knee- not too many maxi dresses. They have some really interesting sweaters here with some seriously special detailing- a little cutesy for my taste but I think the right person could pull them off well. Another big plus are the accessories. They've got some super unique earrings for $18 and fantastic belts for $20-$30- I recommend going in there just to see the belts as they have some of those thicker ones that clench the waist- and they're beautiful (and perfect for dresses that are little big/too flow-y and could use a cinch). I'll definitely be stopping in here again for some summer dresses- I just bought one a few days ago and got a ton of compliments. Only downside is the store itself is TINY and the dressing rooms are pretty makeshift/non existent - but if you can handle that come check it out. read more

Newbury Street was a bit of a bust for me until I found this place. It's a small boutique with A LOT of dresses....like jam packed full of dresses from casual, work to dressy. There's lots of accessories like really cute belts and lots of jewellery. Most dresses were around the $50-$70 range - many were European brands. The accessories were mostly under $20. It helps to have the staff select stuff for you because it's hard to find stuff because there is a lot of items to choose from in such a small space. There's two small changing rooms....really small. Service is very friendly and helpful as they were able to pick out more things for me after seeing me in a few of the outfits I pulled for myself. They chose things that I love and things that I might normally select but ended up loving. Quality is appropriate for the price range. Style ranges from fun, trendy to classic. The sizes run a tad smaller and there didn't seem to be many options for larger sizes. I get a lot of compliments on the dresses and accessories I've purchased from here. I rarely shop and I only get things I really need. have been hunting for A (that means ONE) summer dress for a while but couldn't find anything I really like. I rarely shop but it doesn't mean I dont buy expensive things. If I really like it, I spend money on it. When my boyfriend pointed out the shop from the street, I said, "well... it's on Newbury street so I dont think it is my type of store.", which I meant to say it would be over price crap like other designer clothes. BUT, to my surprise, Lipstick was FULL of pretty summer dress and I could see that it was hand picked. Salespersons were super helpful and I ended up buying three dresses. I had the best experience here. I visited last Sunday to try and find a dress for a wedding, and the girl working there was SO helpful. She set up a dressing room for me and pulled out about 8 or 9 different dresses that were my size to try on. She wasn't too overbearing but was incredibly helpful - a tough thing to do! If you're into uber-fem frocks like myself then you would H.E.A.R.T Lipstick. This place is cute, cozy,inexpensive and the two shop owners are lovely and insightful. I purchased a ridiculously adorable butterfly and striped dress for about $60 and got loads of compliments when I wore it. They have equally adorable accessories ranging from sparking stud earrings to statement necklaces costing anywhere from $12 to $30. It's fitting they opened on Newbury St., since it's the typical little boutique you'd find there, but their dresses are adorable, and not outrageous in price. They have a deal right now where you can get a free pair of earrings if you pay in cash, so go to an ATM ahead of time. Walked into this place today, drawn in by the dresses outside and in the window. At first I felt like it was very tight and wouldn't be able to shop very comfortably.... Within 20 seconds of getting to the rack, I found two-three dresses, as did my friends. Within five minutes our arms were full of absolutely great dresses. We all took our turns going in and out of the dressing rooms, each time the staff commenting HELPFULLY... Not trying to push more sales... Honestly huge helps! I walked out with four dresses and accessories for under $300... On Newbury street! Lipstick has a wonderful selection of very feminine clothes (think ruffles, polka dots, and kittens). The staff is always extremely friendly (and I do mean extreme). The clothes are almost all under $100, so while not cheap, it still warrants the occasional shopping trip to spruce up a wardrobe. The customer service here is pretty great. They ladies who worked there were pretty nice. The store had so many cute things. The dresses were reasonably adorable. I really don't mind spending $50-100 on a dress if I know I'm going to wear it a lot, especially since a dress is an entire outfit. If it wasn't the fall, I would buy some summer dresses. I love affordable, adorable, creative, and flattering dresses that make me look fabulous. Every time I go into Lipstick I purchase at least 2 dresses because I cannot help myself. It's one of the very few stores on Newbury that my student income behind can afford. If you're a short curvy lady, it's like this store was made especially for you! Whenever you wear your dresses outside you'll feel proud of every inch of your body, and feel like a million bucks. Currently I have over a few dresses that are over a year old and they are still in good condition. Whenever I shop here there are always nice sales associates, not pushy, annoying, and snooty like some other associates at certain Newbury stores. I found a surprising amount of dresses there, and they really make the most of their small space. Most dresses were around $69, which seems fair because they are nice quality. The sales woman working was extremely helpful and chatted with everyone in the store, gave recommendations, and shared her opinion when the other woman and I were trying dresses on. It was like shopping with a friend. I didn't catch her name, but she had dark hair and was in her 20's. I hope she is paid well because she really did a great job. BEST CUTE DRESS STORE EVER! Very reasonably priced and tons of options. Though the store is tiny, I always make sure to visit whenever I'm shopping on Newbury. The only bad part is is that they usually only have one of each size of each dress in the store. There was a brown dress there that I LOVED but there was an odd looking water mark that was definitely a stain. I asked if they had any others and the employee said that they might in storage but only the owner was able to look for it. I went back three times hoping to catch the owner, but they were never there (they were opening a store in the Natick Collection at the time) and couldn't give me a time when the owner would be there. Despite not being able to own that super cute dress, I think I've bought about 10 from there during other times and I always receive a ton of compliments. So unique, so cute. read more

I was desperately looking for a dress for a friends wedding that was closely approaching. I tried many stores and just couldn't find what I was looking for. I was wandering down Newbury street after looking at several over priced dresses at Anthropology that just didn't wow me and saw a couple cute dresses on display outside a store I had never gone to before. When I entered my first thought was, this is kind of small but the dresses look cute. The lady working was very nice and greeted me. I soon realized that the place was a gold mine for dresses. I tried on a bunch and loved almost all of them. I settled on the perfect one for the wedding and got sooo many compliments when I wore it. I have since been back twice and have purchased 5 more dresses. All of which have gotten the same amazing compliments and I have no problems telling everyone to go to lipstick. The lady who works there has remembered me too even though the three times I had been there was over the course of a few months. She is so nice and always willing to offer her honest opinon and make suggestions such as belts that go perfectly with the dress (she is not pushy at all and will tell you if another size would work better or if one color is better than another). When I told her how much of a hit the first dress I bought was she was so excited and happy, clearly loves working for the business. Just found out they are opening a big store in the Natick mall. The dresses here are unique, no worrying that everyone you see is going to be wearing the same thing. They have a ton of styles and carry a few of each in different colors as well. The prices are reasonable $40-$80 a dress, a little more than H&M but so much nice and curter, and way less than even Urban or Anthro. I don't remember the last time I got this kind of service and attention while shopping. The ladies working here that day were really good about making customers feel important. The one downside is that there are a couple basic dress styles just in a million different patterns and colors. I found a few super cute ones, but I noticed the waists run kind of high. They also don't take Amex. The average dress price is probably around $60, and time will tell how good the quality of the dress is. Definitely coming back for more. read more

2 years ago on my first trip to Boston I was enticed into this store by a gorgeous dress on a mannequin outside. Now every time I'm in Boston I drop by. I went to Newbury Street today with the agenda to find a dress for a dinner party I'm hosting this weekend, and I went to my usual stops-- Forever21, Urban, etc. I didn't have much luck there, and then I stumbled upon Lipstick-- a hidden gem on Newbury! I'd never been in before, but there were beautiful, bright, patterned dresses on display on the front lawn and I just had to go in! And wow, I'm so glad I did. The dresses here are just so cute, and classy, and different. Not to mention figure flattering! I fell in love with this store instantly. I ended up purchasing a white lace dress with a red ribbon sash around the waist, and a beautiful white bowtie belt for fun (it was half off, what can I say!?) I've read some of the other reviews posted on Yelp, and I'd agree with most of them-- the prices are reasonable, ranging from $50 - 70 (a few items are pricier, like their long coats for $130), but the quality is wonderful. My favorite place for shopping dresses in Boston! I just bought 5 dresses the other day to fill up my wardrobe this summer. Absolutely love them! You can find dresses to fit in various occasions, from casual, to stylish, and to fancy party style. The design can beat any top notch brand, like BCBG, Max Studio, etc..... and the price is just a freaking steal. And the accessories are pretty too, belts and ear rings. I was thoroughly surprised at the selection of dresses... they came in every color and were super cute! I was the only customer as it was midday and the girl working there was extremely attentive and helpful, suggesting belts and shoes to go with the dresses, and offering her opinion.
