Well... this is not what I expected from the pictures. The entrance was confusing to find through some sheds, and once I got inside the plant room, it started to look more familiar. It was difficult to find plants that weren't damaged and in need of some serious TLC, although the prices were fairly decent for the Boston area. I would surely pay less locally, but I digress. Checking out was also a confusing process, and the store itself didn't feel very welcoming to customers as if the music was playing to make it seem like the employees couldn't talk. I probably wouldn't go here again unless I was looking for a cactus or succulent, and even then there's slim pickings. read more

This is a magical place. I think any plant store worth its salt should feel like a botanical garden with price tags. This has that feel, you can almost get lost in the jumble of greenery and the whole place outside and in smells like the great outdoors. I mostly have to avoid the place because I literally cannot leave without buying a plant and I'm running out of surface area in my house. Ricky (I think it was Ricky) is that perfect mix of exasperated and extremely helpful that makes me love New England generally. The staff generally has that feel, they'll give you all kinds of ideas and advice without for a moment losing their frustration at your ineptitude. It's just a great little institution to get to know. read more

I am a stroke survivor. I'm 63. I walk with a cane, and I walk pretty slowly, to mitigate the risk of another serious fall which sends me to the hospital. I live a few blocks from Ricky's and I went over there to see if they had any honeysuckle. The first employee I encountered seemed not to know what honeysuckle was, but then she walked away quickly leaving me to try to catch up. When I found her again, she told another employee standing there something something honeysuckle. As soon as she walked away, he walked away too. I said hey could you help me please and he looked back and then walked away quicker. I walked back to the back counter where the man by the counter was having a conversation with someone. I stood there waiting a while for him to speak to me but he studiously ignored me until some people came up behind me, outside my field of view. He told me "Move!" and put his hand down making a sweeping motion with straight fingers and then wriggled them at me from the lower joint. I said, "what?" I turned around following his gaze and then made sure I could safely back up and I did so. I said, "I am disabled. I am a stroke survivor." He told me: "You aren't disabled" He has a buddy who had polio and "he isn't really disabled. He can do things." I said "I didn't have polio. I had a stroke." And I turned my back and walked away. He came after me shouting. Did I think I was someone important. Wasn't I a "gentleman" enough to make way for two "ladies" and so on. I felt threatened and intimidated and like he was trying to provoke a confrontation and stop me from just walking away. This is by far the worst customer service I have encountered since moving to the Boston area in 2008. read more

The flowers thrive and the staff always help me find exactly what I'm looking for for my lighting conditions. It's such a magical place walking through all the plants. One of my favorite places in all of Somerville. Ricky's is a verdant oasis of plants in the midst of a busy neighborhood. They have a suggested 15 minute browsing limit (I think because of covid) and I completely understand why because I could spend hours just wandering around in here looking at everything. They have a massive selection of plants and have signs advising which sections have low light, medium light plants, etc, which I found super helpful as a novice plant owner. There are so many plants in their greenhouse it really feels like you're walking through a rainforest. They also have a ton of cute pots and other tchotchkes for the plants. And the plant I got here is still thriving several months later. I'm looking forward to coming back here and getting more. read more

This was a pleasant find on my walk! I didn't expect to run into a nursery here. I came in early April so perhaps the selection was not up to par yet. They had a number of pansies, shrubs, and tulips and hyacinths. The variety of colors they had was great. Their terra cotta pot collection also seems pretty decent too and the other pots appear to be a reasonable price. Their indoor green house has many houseplants of various sizes and they even sell carnivorous ones. The prices are a bit on the higher end. You would definitely find cheaper plants through a place like Home depot, whole foods or Target. But you come here for the variety that they offer. There were many succulents, pothos, philodendrons and Aglaonemas. They didn't have many of the colorful Aglaonemas when I went but definitely had really nice large Sansaverias and ZZ plants as well as Cat Palms, Yuccas etc. It was very green, I just wish their variety also included more colorful plants but again, I may have just come too early. They also sell Lecca, Sand, pebbles etc (though it would be cheaper to buy online). The organization is not the best, it is certainly lush but it feels like they dumped a whole bunch of plants into a small warehouse. It is a small business so what more can you want. read more

This place is the garden of Eden. These plants are so well maintained, so cared for- just take my $. I've been to every nursery in the area, and they are all the ghetto by comparison. The staff here are so knowledgeable, so helpful and friendly. I just could not be more pleased. I have a balcony that I've neglected for years, and finally decided on a Quarantine project to transform it into my Isolation Oasis. I've researched plants endlessly, to achieve a certain look. They have every single plant I could want- and even plants I didn't know I wanted. I am spoiled for choice, and who can choose!?! When I gaze onto my balcony, it's finally shaping into the jungle I envisioned. read more

This place blow my mind! It is still cold outside so there are not that many plants outside, but they have an indoor market that has lots of different plants sorted by how much sunlight they need. I even found an Asian pitcher carnivorous plant here! they also sell those boho style rope plant hangers! You can also make your own terrarium here. But the small succulents hadn't arrived this weekend, so i can't make my own terrarium. Will come back in the future for sure. The price for the medium plants are at the higher end tho. ~$20-$30 per plant. read more

This place is awesome! I tell all my plant friends about this place and they love it. The workers are always very helpful with parking and Ricky is great!! I had bought a terrarium glass globe and it broke the minute I got into the car after purchasing it. I was so sad all day about it, I called and ask if they were able to replace it the next day and he replaced it No question asked! It made my 30 minute drive there well worth it. THE PLANTS! Ricky's has the best priced 6 packs (herbs, flowers, veggies) of any garden center I've ever been to. And I have been to a lot because I'm a legit urban farmer. That being said, the price and variety has one downside- you have to double check that yours plants aren't sickly and contains 6 and not 5. If you shop until mid-June it shouldn't be hard to find a healthy plant pack, you just may need to look around a bit. After that it's slim pickings. Tips: Don't buy a single tomato plant for $5 when you can buy a 6 pack for $2.50. I see people do it all the time. If you don't need all 6, give them to a community garden or put them on craigslist free. Don't buy your tomato plant in May. Just don't. Some garden centers refuse to sell plants before they can survive outside (Mahoney's) but Ricky's sells them then, but they'll probably die in a cold night unless you cover them with a sheet or put then inside under a grow light. Why would you bother? Ask Ricky or the other staff for growing tips. They really know what they're talking about. If you need to garden in containers but don't want to spend a lot of money on fancy pots, ask Ricky to sell you a few large plant buckets they get for free. He let me have them for .50 each a few years ago. Score! If you want your container garden to look pretty just buy a few pretty pots and hide the cheap ugly ones behind those. read more

I love Ricky's! A Somerville legend! The people who work here are exceptionally nice, even when riding out the chaotic Christmas tree rush in 40-degree weather. Every time I go by in the spring and summer, I always see at least one person watering the plants, which makes me think that they're really well taken care of. (Once they get home with me, that's another story...) Plus, the selection here is HUGE, way more than what you would find at Loew's/Home Depot/etc. There's an area for flowers and herbs, an area for bigger plants like roses, shrubs, and vegetables, and an indoor area with pots and cactuses. I'm pretty certain that you could find anything you could possibly want here! That being said, the parking area isn't quite proportional to the giant lot. But the employees will kindly help you load up your car, so elbow your way in there! read more

We quickly pulled in when we saw Ricky's. Being transplants from NC, we try to do a lot of gardening / keep house plants. What great selection! Also a great shopping experience. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted and helped the whole time by someone on the staff (his name was Oscar). And he loaded up a cart for us, helped us find the best looking plants, and eventually helped load our car. We even checked out with Ricky who was super nice and gave us some great tips for our newly bought plants as well. He also gave us some crushed clay pots to use for our plants. Every time I go to Ricky's, a guy (Ricky?) is super friendly and tells me the scientific name of the plant I am buying three times. Each time, I resolve to commit the name to memory and do some research on its care when I get home, and, inevitably, I always forget. Ricky's is the kind of small business that takes credit cards but I always try to pay cash. I feel like they work hard and keep prices their reasonable (and almost always have something in-season or that will stay alive year-round on sale). There is a major assortment of in-season plants outside, but also an expansive indoor area that stocks indoor tropicals and plant soil and food. Also, this is the destination for Somerville or Cambridge to purchase a Christmas tree. Just go. Someone will help you trim, wrap, and secure your tree to your car before sending you on your happy way. read more

I love living a block away from Ricky's. From plants in the summahtime, to pumpkins in the fall, to being able to throw a Christmas tree over my shoulder in the wintertime, Ricky's pretty much has it all. They are a little pricey, but not too crazy (except for pots--those are exorbitant), and always proportional to how high-maintenance you are: e.g. at Christmas, if you want a tree that's cut, on a stand already, looking picturesque, you'll pay $45+ but if you're willing to sort through trees that have just been tossed together in a bin, you pay a flat rate of $29 or $39, depending on height and fullness. Note to shoppers: Do not wait to get a tree. They start selling around Thanksgiving, and they WILL sell out as Christmas week approaches. I waited until the 20th this year, and got the last decent tree on the lot. 6" tall and only $38 with tax! Ricky himself is a little bristly, but my family's from NYC, so his character is just what I like around the holidays. He even told me to come by and smell the trees anytime if I needed a quick dose of Christmas spirit. (It works, btw.) They also deliver trees to your door for a pretty small cost all things considered. Needed: bike parking. read more

My experience shopping here was absolutely awful. I came here because of the good reviews and upon review, resonate with the not so good ones. Been wanting to check this place out for a while and finally diverted my trip back from airport thru crazy traffic and Cambridge to make a special trip. I could not have been more disappointed. This was the week of Thanksgiving but there were literally no customers (this was around 12:30 pm on Monday) so holiday rush was not the cause of this. I wandered upstairs after passing someone (employee, someone had referred to him as a manager later) who was at the xmas tree area. He didn't acknowledge my presence or ask if I need help finding the actual shop. Upstairs, lots of selection, most over priced IMO (I am not new to planting). I went here because people speak of their succulents, and many were bone dry, like beyond unhealthy. Wandered around hoping to get some help or attention. None. Everyone was eating lunch at a table. Fine..but 30 minutes later nothing. Half the plants didn't have tags or prices. I picked out a few b/c I didn't want to waste a trip and tried to ask staff around the kind or type of light needed. Most couldn't be bothered or were trying to look it up on their phone (which I would do as well if I was not in a PLANT store). They just said "oh, my Wifi does not work, oh well". I picked a few. Finally, against my better judgement asked who I think was the manager about a plant. He literally ignored me eating his food until I was like "hello, hello" to the back of his head (he didn't have headphones on) and without turning around said "go outside and find someone else". So I went outside and there were delivery people there, who were like "oh he is the manager" After ignoring me, he jumps up and answers one basic question. I think, perhaps, the owner? appeared, because a man appeared to tell me that was a nice selection as I was buying a lot (I spent over $120 on a few basic plants, and this was during a "B1G50% sale" - which is probably always to jack up prices. And if not their prices are crazy) and had to ask for a box and a second box b/c he literally shoved them in there, destroying the plants that had hanging bits. I was planning to buy 3x as much as a did (i.e large sale) but paired it down because I didn't want to give that store more business. The man that came over and was like "those are nice - thats a nice selection". I ignored him (and felt bad about being rude but was about to snap because I was ready to be out of there - and was wondering where he had been for the past hour...because if he IS the owner - WTF is this customer experience he is allowing?) I was hoping I could run into him again on the way out so I could have a conversation with him in case but didn't see him again. The "manager" guy put it in my trunk, showed in there so hanging plant hanger was bent over straining the plant and I had to essentially tell him to go away I would just do it. I have never seen less of a focus on customer experience of "I give a ***" in any retail environment (big or small) in my life. These are the same kind of places that complain when people go to big box stores for plants (which I have done, and now will only do, at a fraction of the price). I like my plants but had I not made a special trip I would have left. I am now left with one of those "I spent a lot of money at a place I wish I had never given business to" kind of experiences. I am giving 2 stars b/c they have a small gravel parking lot ( I am sure full when its crowded but nice given it's Somerville) and because their selection of hanging plants is great (and $$). A-Z of everything else was a zero. I have experience as a SBO and am selective about writing negative reviews because I know customers can be crazy but this experience deserved it. read more

This is specifically about their curbside pickup, which they've been offering on their website. Their website says to call to place an order. I did that and the person who answered said he couldn't fulfill my order because color and size would be too subjective. I'd asked for 3 baskets of petunias. He didn't ask about color or size, just said no, that it would be too subjective. I'm posting this review so others who might want something similar don't waste their time. I bought baskets of petunias from our local Star market via Instacart using curbside pickup and they're lovely. The colors didn't matter. read more

The plants are great, wonderful selection. I've been to this location a handful of times, each of these experiences were wonderful. At times I'd come here to unwind sometimes and just browse. The frontend staff is very helpful. Plants are beautiful and well taken care of, pots are quite cheap compared to other locations. However, my last time going to this store was not as enjoyable. This time I met the manager. There was a misunderstanding that happened, and he got pretty angry. Angry to the point he seemed cold and quite condescending. Originally, I would have given this store a good 4.5 out of 5. I also feel 3.0 star is unjust, if I could give a 3.5 i'd feel slightly more comfortable with this rating. However, after that awkward and uncomfortable experience both my partner, sister, her boyfriend and I (we all witnessed this) we no longer feel welcome visiting this store, with the intention to most likely to not visit again. People get angry, people make mistakes I understand this. However, there are different ways of expressing anger, especially while on the clock in your store. read more

I keep trying to do business with this place and they keep finding creative times to close. The website says 8PM (and "OPEN FOR THE HOLIDAYS!"), Google says 6PM, but apparently it's somewhere between 5 and "nah." I worked all day Christmas Eve and couldn't buy a tree because these guys who sell christmas trees took the day off. I'll be going out of my way to patronize other businesses that honor their posted hours. I've wasted too much time arriving within posted hours to find the place closed. read more

The staff are very friendly and helpful! The products and plants are very cheap. We spent an hour here and could've easily spent longer. Found this spot on Yelp and was surprised to find its right on my way to school and I pass it every week! I love this little spot. Parking is difficult but we were in and out to pick out our Christmas tree. Usually we do a fake tree, but we recently moved and everywhere is out of fake trees already. Went here, and the first tree I saw was the one. Very affordable, quick and great customer service. He tied up our tree on the car like a pro! It's been many years since I picked up a real tree and I am so excited! I am excited to see what this spot has in the summer! I cannot wait to set up my tree tonight. Very beautiful trees across the board. For note: I am somewhat sensitive to the fir oils and their options are the trees that don't cause irritation to my skin. Soft and absolutely stunning. Visited store for the first time and was amazed by its size and plant variety. I am a life long plant lover and found the plant selection exciting- I bought a variety of sanseveria that I've seen only on line! Great to buy local, from a small business and support home economy! The price if pots was higher than other larger stores- but the selection was good and I want to support this type of business' existence. Staff was friendly, some may be ESL so you may want to ask more than one person if you have questions. Small parking lot available, accepted MasterCard & loaded my car with my haul. Somerville (and everywhere) can use all the places like this it can get -- interesting, high-quality local businesses that offer great value with knowledgeable personal service. Ricky's, colonizing a former gas station, brings an oasis of calm and enjoyment to the crazy hustle of this part of Union Square. But Somerville doesn't seem to think so. Ricky's is not "the highest and best use of the land," in the mayor's words, and in the not-too-distant future will be condemned, bulldozed, and the land built up. More luxury condos to boost tax revenues requires a level of density incompatible with a garden shop. Their annuals selection is really broad, particularly for a small place, and the quality of the plants leaves you wondering why anyone would ever spend money at the sad garden area of Home Depot. And the staff are great at helping you suit your conditions, find a companion plant, or just answering basic questions. Too bad a strong local business that adds this much to the neighborhood is "not in the long-term interest of Union Square." Careful -- you may be next. read more

In a new homeowner rite of passage, my husband and I visited Ricky's this weekend to see if we can sustain some plant life in our new condo. We were lucky to be helped by Ricky himself, who helped us pick out indoor plants that would work best with our lighting and gardening abilities (read: none). The market also has a terrific DIY-terrarium building station with much cheaper supplies than some of the more trendy fly-by-night shops. The best place in the city to get a Christmas tree, hands down. I love this place, the workers are so nice and helpful (hi Juan!); I could spend hours browsing here. During the spring/summer they have tons of starter plants to be replanted in your garden or raised beds or however you urban gardeners see fit. Forgot to get fresh herbs during your grocery trip? Stop by Ricky's for them and you will find the herbs to be a much higher quality than your run of the mill supermarket. They have a wide selection of house plants as well, and their flower arrangements are gorgeous and very reasonably priced. Parking is a bit of a pain now that the Town is using their parking lot as a staging ground for all of the dump trucks during construction. There is a metered lot across the street by Taqueria La Mexicana. read more

On a lazy Sunday morning after beating the rush at Market Basket (seriously, it was like 9am and we were there- only crazy people do this), my roommate and I stop in at his request. He has turned into quite the green thumb and needed some supplies. I have had a couple plants for a while now though I wasn't planning on getting anything. Once I saw those herbs, their intense aroma tempting my nose, I decided right then and there I needed an herb box for all the summer cooking coming my way. The 2 gentlemen running the place were super friendly. I felt like I was talking to my dad and grandpa, not 2 random dudes. Somehow this old gas station turned plant emporium is a roaring success. They have everything you need to turn your green patch into a gassy sanctuary. Even if you are one of the unfortunate many without an actual yard, you can begin your adventures in deck gardening here. While I don't have any seedlings started, they do and I have every intention of having a tomato plant or 2 going before the end of the month. Everyone should green up their space and Ricky's Flower Market has everything you need to get going. They've got supplies for bigger "yardy" projects or smaller "decky" ones. So I have this problem. Ever since moving from VT to Boston...and getting a big chunk of patio....I've become a compulsive container gardener. I um, have almost 70 potted plants. I can't help it. I need the green. So Ricky's being the closest neighborhood (ish) garden center has, on more than one occasion, given me my fix of potting soil, pots, or even plants...this when I get impatient that my impatiens aren't blooming yet. Parking is a little weird-- and getting a million tons of potting soil into your car with multiple scrambling Boston Terriers...when it's half a block away can be a pain - BUT - the staff is super helpful, really friendly, and they know a lot. I totally give them points for clearly being in a converted gas station, way to take it the eff back. It makes me feel like I'm in the year 2108 and we don't need gas stations stations any more and so people are using them for things like flower markets. The lack of an actual structure other than a carport, however, means that they're closed when it's raining....and because of the problem I have, I find myself sometimes needing to garden even when it's drizzly. One thing I will say is that Mahoney's in Brighton (while their service is glacial) has the same basic terracotta selection for a little more than half the price that Ricky's does. But I'd rather drive the 2 miles to Ricky's than the 5 miles to Mahoney. read more

Ricky's is great because they are there. Really. Union Square is one big mess of traffic, and noise, and urban squalor. You see Ricky's, as you turn the corner, and there's actual green growing things. Look! Color, Life, and Beauty? Gads! There's hope for the world! They have a pretty basic selection of stuff, but they are really nice to their customers. Parking isn't adequate, but they have it.
