Liquor Up & Wine Down is a fine store selling wines from around the world, liqueurs and in cans. I come here often as the prices are gentle. On Monday, I bought a bottle of Puerta de Toledo which was a Cabernet Sauvignon for a beef braise that I was preparing for dinner. Pramod helped me. An Indian, his knowledge of wine is extensive even though he does not drink. I find that fascinating. He works on Mondays and the weekends. Mercedes also works here and she likes Tequila and red wine. She also is helpful and advises me on wines that I should try. I like the prices as on the left as one enters are several bottles ranging from $5.95. In these times, this is a steal. A lot of neighborhood residents shop here. read more

Great liquor store! Moved right next to this place a few months ago. Dogs are encouraged to take a stroll inside with their owners :) which is what drew me to this business in the first place-- I have two small dogs. I came in for a specific champagne which they didn't sell (they sell sooo many varieties) and I didn't even know the name. Just knew what the label looks like. The staff was so sweet to me! I must have looked like an idiot-- "yeah it's from France and the label is blue. No, not blue, it was green. Or red." I'm wondering if they rebranded because 4 days ago I saw them changing the entire storefront sign. Now it says Liquor Up and Wine Down (cute!). Same owners? Hmmm. read more

I'd passed this place beautiful wine shop many times on the way home from work, but never had any pressing reason to go in. Tonight I was in a hurry and needing a bottle of bubbly, so I stopped in. So glad I did. The layout is open and inviting, boasting a wide, organised selection of wines. I wish I'd gotten the name of the associate who helped me, but he was awesome. He guided me to the champagne and Prosecco by my request and helped me nail ones in the price range I was seeking. Don't be intimidated by the pricier bottles displayed up front. There's a bottle for everyone! I went with the reasonably priced Chandon Brut and his recommended Maresina Prosecco. Both available chilled. Such a lovely, seamless experience. Stopped by to restock my Grand Marnier and was surprised to find they carried sake! I am no sake expert - just keep track of sake I have tried and liked and usually buy at a sake specific shop. Although they didn't have the sake I knew, the staff was really friendly and came over to explain the sake selection he had. He suggested I try the Sakemoto Junmai Sake which was actually much cheaper than the sake I had wanted! The price was so good, I took gamble on it...and it ended up a great pick! Loved the fruity flavor and paired well with fish dishes I made. Later I looked it up online and found it won Gold Medal taste awards and was on Best Buy lists. So definitely check this store out. I will never go here again. After a couple of years going to this store the woman who works there is very rude. I always say hi how are you and no response from employee. you would think after frequently visiting this store they would recognize me and have a civi conversation. the two gentlemen that work at night are very friendly and engaging. there are so many other options in area. read more

I was in a pinch. Game of Thrones finale was coming up and I was making wildfire. For it to look like wildfire I need Midori, which apparently is harder to find than you might think. So I turned to Yelp, found Liquor Up & Wine Down, and gave them a call. They had it! Though their prices were a little bit on the higher end, I came in and left purchasing the Midori in a flash. There is something curious to note, though. At first glance this appears to be a tiny store. It is anything but. Seriously, walking in here I was amazed at how large the store actually was. I will definitely be back. The staff was friendly, the selection was varied, and the place was immaculately cleaned. Overall a great liquor store with a huge selection. First of all this place is beautiful. Hands down a gorgeous wine store. The person who built this also worked with building nightclubs and when you walk pass the padded walls, the draped ceiling, the beautiful divided shelves you can tell. Now as for their selection of wines it's on point. While browsing you can see they stocked up with some reds and whites and have staple names like Flowers. Caymus, Jordan, etc But don't let their appearance scare you away if you just need some simple and inexpensive wines for the night. They have a section of the store for wines with lower price points and they also carry inexpensive jug wines like Cavit so don't worry too much about price. As for the spirits I have to say I was a little taken aback by their selection. Obviously they had bar standards like Grey Goose, Bulleit, Campari, etc. but I was kinda disappointed there weren't more premium spirits in their selection. Don't get me wrong, finding a Hibiki 21 is not an easy thing but I was hoping to find some really hard to find liqueurs or aperitifs. Then again you can't have it all and I'm sure that the buyer knows his community and with there amazing selection of wine it's hard to complain. Overall the store is breathtaking and I recommend people stop in from time to time just to see what might be new. Also the manager from Philly was a very kind and awesome help so kudos on customer service. read more

Cork Wine and Spirits was the only place open at 9 pm on a friday night that was within a short distance. I decided to give it a try and ended up walking into a gorgeous wine store. Now, i'm no wine connoisseur but the design made it easy to get whatever I was looking for. They have a wide variety and selection of wines and champagne and the staff was very friendly and gave great recommendations. So I lived right near Cork in 2008 and 2009 (it wasn't Cork back then, it was an unremarkable liquor store), and now I live here again. When I moved back, Cork was closed and called something else. I was sad, because it meant my extraordinarily lazy rump had to venture two blocks further (I know, the horror!!) to get my imbibe on. When Cork finally reopened, I was shocked at how nice it was. It's 1st avenue, after all, right off 23rd street, it's not exactly a block with fancy storefronts. But, Cork is different. It's very clean, very bright, spacious, and chock-full of so many different types of wine and liquor. They have the unusual, the cheap and the high-end. They have a wall of Sake. They have a wall of nips. Brands of liquor I didn't even know came in nip form, Cork has it. Limited edition Champagne, wines for $6 and wines for $600. I have been in too many times to count. I always see the same manager there, always friendly and smiling and helping customers. I am a jerk and think I know best, so I always just grab what I know to be good and bee-line for the counter. One day my friend John comes over with some really excellent red wines and explains he tried the new wine store across the street. I tell him I go there all the time and he exclaims "Oh! Then you must have met Iggy, isn't he great!?" Iggy? Who is Iggy? So the next time I went in, I asked the nice looking manager if he could help me find some wine. He introduced himself as Iggy and I told him my name and that I lived in the area. He made some killer recommendations, I told him his shop was great and went on with my day. Now, every time I go in, Iggy is there, smiling and ready to help me with whatever I need. Sometimes I need cheap cooking wine, and he hands me the cheapest bottle in the place. "I'd love to up-sell you, but really, this is all you need." Another time I went in before Christmas and said I wanted something really special to bring to my mom's house for the holidays. "Get this red, it's well balanced and the price is fair." He also let's me know his prices are competitive and asked me to let him know if I see anything cheaper elsewhere so he can mark his down. His honesty and thoughtfulness is refreshing, and his knowledge is so helpful and needed in this area. He takes pride in his work and his products, and I appreciate that so much. I refuse to shop anywhere else anymore, and as for my friend John - he lives 18 blocks away and will only shop with Iggy. Cork for the win. Go ask for Iggy. read more

Like a breath of fresh air. Used to be a really good wine store here. Then it got sold. TO AN IDIOT. The idiot ruined it. It went from having a huge selection of wines from different regions, a high-end temperature controlled room with super old and rare wines, and massive selection of spirits to a store with rows and rows of same few liquors lining the shelves. It was heartbreaking. And ghetto. It because the place that needs a security booth and the best place in the 'hood to buy White Lightning. Enter the new owners, and while the decor is kind of on the austere side with box shaped shelves made from very light grained wood, the store seems new and fresh, and has lots of interesting variety. It appears they've set up some tasting areas, so hopefully there'll be some regular activities over there. I passed by just by chance and was pleasantly surprised to see the changes. Apparently the former owner (clown) mismanaged the place and the license reverted back to the previous owner (not sure why that is exactly, but that's apparently the case), who sold it to the current owners. Wow. Called for delivery and the woman who answered the phone was extremely rude. They basically made it seem like i was inconveniencing them by getting wine delivered and then it went from being 1 hour delivery to 2 hour because they had to spend time finding the wine i asked for and they were too busy. I've NEVER in my life been treated like that. Don't offer. Service if you're mad that someone asks to use it. I was about to spend over $30. If i could give zero stars I would. The staff are very knowledgeable, helpful, and spot-on with their recommendations. Their prices are some of the best in the city, let alone Manhattan! Who knew a wine store could be so amazing? We live close by and decided to stop in here this weekend. Service: The man who helped us was so knowledgeable! We had a conversation about the wines we usually drink and what we like don't like. We told him that we were looking to try something new and from regions we don't tropically gravitate toward. He helped us select amazing bottles, all in our price range, and could explain anything you wanted to know about every bottle there. It was awesome! I just moved to the neighborhood and am so happy to have found this store. The space is beautiful, the selection is great, and the prices seemed great as well. Being new to Manhattan, I half expected spirits to be far more expensive than I am used to and I assumed that lower end wine wouldn't even be stocked. Cork had a huge selection of wine with a nice price range (most every bottle I saw was between $9 and $60). The owner and staff were very friendly and from what I overheard, seemed knowledgeable about the wines they sold. This is definitely going to be my spot for wine and spirits. read more

This may be the most beautifully designed wine shop in NYC. It is is incongruously located amidst undistinguished shops on First Avenue in Stuyvesant Town. Not is it only a treat for the eyes, but for the oenophile in you. They have a great selection and are reasonably priced. So far so good. These guys took an old dusty space and turned it into a showroom for wine. But don't let the dazzling interior fool you - the prices are easy with plenty of well priced wines available - even a whole section of large format wines are given the same respect as more expensive selections. The owner greeted me and was friendly and showed me around. They had a whiskey tasting too which I enjoyed. I gauge a store by the lower priced wines and they have plenty. My spanish garnacha was just what I was looking for $13 with tax. They can even engrave a bottle of booze for you. I will be back to explore this bright beacon of wine!! CHEERS!!! read more

I have lived in the area for 2 years and this wine store is a breath of fresh air! It is fantastic! Very impressive selection that ranges from very affordable to extremely fancy gems. What makes this place unique is that the owner and staff are very knowledgeable and every bottle (cheap or expensive) is carefully selected.
