We must admit, the reason why we ended up checking out this place is because the bright but nicely done orange fall decor on the outside of the store really caught our attention. Although not working, check out their little train sets + railroad circling the store. For a small liquor store, the alcohol selection here seems to be pretty good. We picked up a bottle of wine. I had a decent experience shopping for wine at Manley's. We bought a few bottles here, everything from the South African reds they were advertizing to Champagne. Most of the bottles were impressive, though some were just average -- that's to be expected at any wine shop. The great thing about Manley's is that they had a very wide offering of wines. No matter what type of wine you are in the mood for or what your price range is, there is something here for you. They do sell inexpensive but decent quality wines, yet they also have a pretty good selection of old wines (I even saw a Cabernet from the 70s!) for decent prices considering. The biggest con to this place was that the staff didn't seem that knowledgeable about the wine they were selling. If you are someone who knows wine well, that's fine, but if not, you might be on your own here mostly. This shop is definitely worth checking out if you are looking to pick up a bottle. Just come in with some knowledge about what you'll be getting. read more

If you ask anyone who knows my palate what kind of wines I like, you'd probably hear one or all of the following... "Stephy? Oh yeah, she only likes full bodied, spicy reds, bigger the better." "Stephy? Oh I heard she only likes wines that will put her in a choke-hold. Umm, she may need psychiatric help." "Stephy? Bigger the better. She likes man wines, none of those fruity chick varietals. Give her an ass slap in a glass." And the beautiful thing is, they'd all be correct which is exactly why I liked Manley's because they understood all of these descriptive elements and were able to set us up with a nice big red. We also grabbed a bottle of bubbly from Jordan Winery and it was delightful. I would definitely trust the suggestions of the guys here and even though they looked at me like I was a few screws short of a tool box when I asked for the choke-hold, well, they still did a fine job and my buzz was thankful :) read more

Beautiful wine shop, but a recent experience turned me off and I likely won't go back. I recently purchased a $50 bottle of Petite Sirah. Brought it home and waited a few days to open it. Once it was opened, discovered that the cork was brittle, there was a small amount of wine seeping through the cork, and some residue around the top of the bottle. I brought it back to Manley's and was informed that "this is normal and happens often in the shipping of wine". It was clear that the staff (possibly the manager?), wasn't completely interested in replacing it with a new bottle. After asking a second time to replace it with a new one, I was reluctantly given a new bottle. I asked if it was worth checking under the cap to make sure this second bottle wasn't also affected, I was told "we can't replace two bottles". Hmm. I get it, maybe the wine was fine. Maybe not. In any case, good customer service means replacing a less than perfect product without question. It was unopened, and clearly not what most customers would expect from a $50 bottle of wine. Retailers need to remember what business they are in. Educating customers is important, but making them feel they are in the wrong for returning a less than perfect purchase is not going to create a lasting customer relationship. Replacing it without any questions does. read more

I have been in here a number of times and have always been impressed by the level and knowledge of the service here. They seem to know their stuff, and even know a few nicely obscure things. For instance, as I was paying for my purchase I noticed they sold fifths of applejack. Applejack isn't something you see that often (oddly enough I had JUST been thinking about applejack earlier in the day). I mentioned it to the guy behind the counter. He said that he had never heard about it until he read Steinbeck. Nice! I asked him to refresh my memory of what applejack was, and he said it was apple brandy with additional distilled spirits. Pros: Got my order right, and delivery time was fantastic! Cons: I didn't have cash, so I paid with a credit card over the phone. When the delivery man handed me the receipt to sign, there wasn't anywhere for me to write in a tip. I wasn't sure if that meant they only take cash tips, or don't take tips at all. Either way, I didn't have anything to give the guy, who walked away looking very dejected. I felt bad about it too. read more

I admit the act was well intentioned, but a complete violation of standard expectations of privacy. My friend was rudely accosted by this other patron for no real reason. This is the perfect place to run to when you go to Tartine for the first time and don't know that it's BYOB. It's not an overwhelming selection and I've never been super impressed by their service, but it's handy and they are friendly. read more

I have shopped in this wine store on and off for twenty plus years but no more! The selection is actually pretty good. The prices are a bit high. I could deal with that. However, one of the sales clerks, David, is really nasty with very bad manners. After experiencing his rudeness, I avoid the store and shop at Wine on Nine instead! read more

For nearly twenty years this was my "go to" for wine. The last couple of years have been a disappointment, mostly in the customer service area. What once was a place where knowledge of product was shared with pleasure it appears the staff seems a little grumpy and put out when asking for advice. In the past they were the only ones in town with adjectives to describe their wines. Now, they have local competition that is friendlier and more appreciative and it has been these new places getting more of my business. The wine selection is still great but so are the other places only an extra block away. If they fine tune their customer service they can quickly reclaim their status as my "go to" place. This is the cutest wine shop I have ever seen and the wine selections are fabulous! They have everything from cult CA classics to a wide variety of world-wide wines and an impressive quantity of very drinkable everyday wines at very fair prices. I was really impressed. I have twice been to this store, I live uptown but they have a refrigerated celler so I thought it made sense to try it. The first day a women behind the counter was yelling to some-one over the phone about a bill that was not paid. The 2nd time again same women again shouting and cursing at somebody on the phone. That day I turned around and left. I work and live in the city and going into any store with a worker twice acting in this manner is not a store I wil patronize. The woman is pictured here. She's the wife, Lord, she must be off her MEDS. I thought to tell her this is not the way to act in front of customers but I didn't think she was the type to listen to such a comment. I buying wine in my area, no more listening to shouting workers for me. I did like the bottles of wine I had gotten the first visit but I will never go back again. read more

As far as selection is concerned, the wines are great quality and tasted by the staff. The prices vary but many are reasonable. The owner is a great guy, you can usually find him with one of his many passions in front of the store. Many members of the staff are amazing and ready to help. But for as much good as I can say about a few of them, I'll say mum for all the turnover there of employees- since I am an ex employee myself.
