What a fun place to enjoy dinner! Staff is very welcoming and happy. Everyone more than willing to answer questions and make recommendations. Chose the steamed mussels for an appetizer and I must say they were not my favorite. The broth was a little on the sweet side w smoked apples and I did not find that it paired well with the muscles. So I was very excited to have the Schnitzel for dinner: so delicious! The salad that came as a side was fresh and crisp and the asparagus cooked to perfection. The spazel with mushroom was good but somewhat heavy. I'd love to come back for more Bavarian specialties!
Oh. My. Gosh. I was able to experience this place due to devour Indy and it was amazing. I had high expectations going in because it's related to Big Lug and I'm a fan of them, but Liter House availed did not disappoint. I just wish they weren't so expensive so I could go more often! Their devour menu was a really good deal and I highly recommend taking advantage of it because the meals were slightly different from their regular menu. I got the stew made with impossible ground "beef" and it convinced me I'd have no problem being a vegetarian. It was so good. I also ordered the candy bar for dessert and was pleasantly surprised by how rich and tasty it was. I'll attach a photo of that. Additionally, I ordered a (liter of) beer, because how can you not. I got the Wizard of Saaz because of the pun and it was on special and it's a nice czech lager. I'd definitely drink it again and will probably return for beer in the near future.
Yes, I realize I won't make any friends with this review, but I can't help but tell the truth. Let me say that I have worked many years in the food industry myself, was married many years to a chef, have run a successful foodie group over 5 years now... and by the way was born and raised in Germany. And I cringe when I think about this place being marketed as German. Getting some glass mugs and throwing some German words on the menu, does not make a German restaurant. I generally enjoy Sahm's restaurants, but this is a huge blunder I am sorry to say, because I really wanted to love this place and I don't leave bad reviews lightly. I do not understand how this place get's these good reviews. Let's start with the good: The remodel of the old Bent Rail space is phenomenal, looks wonderful. Great job. It doesn't have the advertised beer hall feel though. The beer is great. A very nice selection of brews. Then again, if you are marketing it as a German spot you should be aware that Germans have different glassware for the different types of beer. While you can drink most out of you regular glass mug, you really should serve a Weizen in a Weizen glass... that would be the tall slender glass. Minor detail, but it keeps that type of beer from going flat so fast. The food.. Oh my... the only god remarks I heard from my entire group was that the beet salad and the tomato salad were excellent. Not German, but quite tasty. And that is where it ends. I understand that this is supposed to be fancy German cuisine, but before you get fancy, you need to get the basics right. If you're just throwing stuff together to be different and to go with the trend it will catch up with you eventually. I ordered the brat... yeah, it came with doctored up kraut that had kale in it, not great but edible. The potato dumplings had zero taste, leaving you with a rather dry tasteless mass in your mouth while you are trying to figure out how on earth you're going to swallow that. The brat itself, first off not what a German would call a brat, but let's not be too particular, the casing was tough and the filling dry and very chewy. So horribly overdone I couldn't eat more than 2 pieces. The only redeeming quality was the mustard, that was delicious. Tried the frikadelle, another bone dry meat, yet at least it had some taste to it. The fries were however served cold. Blood sausage, also dry and extremely salty. Krapfen, or donuts as you may, because those certainly have nothing in common with a Krapfen, other than the sugar they're covered in. How can something so greasy be so dry inside and dense? Maybe all this dry stuff increases beer sales? And the advertised Gemuetlichkeit? Not so much. Clearly the waitress was efficient but had about as much warmth as a glacier. Clearly she wanted us out of there quickly. Can I finish ordering before you rip the menu out of my hand? I do know that tables need to be turned, but geesh. If you can't reach something, could you ask for help? Don't reach and lean all over me as I am trying to eat. Only about 1/4 of our group would come back for food. The majority would come back for a beer if in the neighborhood, but would not make a special trip here.
This was our first visit and we will be back again. However, we were very disappointed that the KRUAT BALLS ARE NO LONGER ON THE MENU. The appetizers were "adequate" The German Pretzel is small and three mustards offered although very tasty, was not enough to properly dip the pretzel. The Raclette Latke was flavorful but very difficult to eat. The purpose of Raclette cheese is to enjoy its gooey ness. However, a cold cheese gets hard and must be cut with a fork and knife. (Too much effort for an appetizer). The five star performances were in the service from server, Tracy and all three entrees we decided to select. My son had the pork schnitzel which he said was amazing. He let Mom and Dad sample it and had to fight us off from stealing more. Very large portion with a light and crispy coating balanced with a mushroom sauce that was perfect. The currywurst was very tasty. The two large sausages were so juicy that when I cut into them they squirted juice across the table. The liter burger was so large that only half could be eaten. The beef was very flavorful and complimented the pretzel bun. If measuring value, Liter House scores high. appetizers under ten and entrees under twenty with two boxes going home. One last thing! Try their curry ketchup on anything. It came with the currywurst but virtually was licked clean. Tracy noticed my addiction to it and brought out more.
I've been here twice, once for breakfast and once for dinner. I do wonder if the name is meant to be a play on words - Liter House, Lederhosen. The food is very tasty and though some dishes are pricier than other places, the portion size is very generous. On my first trip, I had the devour menu, with Pretzel, Currywurst, and an underwhelming dessert (something that's not on their regular menu, anyway). The pretzel was fresh and about what you'd expect. The currywurst was delicious, though I would say that it was more inspired by the currywurst you would get from a street vendor in Germany, than looking like the same. Again, the portion size was insane, and you could easily get away with splitting it between two people, especially if you get anything else. The second visit, I went for breakfast and had the pimento poutine. Once again, it was very tasty, but it was more inspired by poutine than authentic to Canada. It was closer to cheese fries. Being in Broadripple, parking may be an issue, and the place can get busy, but it's a unique place and worth a visit.
I'd like to pretend that I had some sort of influence on the development of Liter House, the latest and greatest of the Sahm establishments that recently opened in the increasingly foodie-centric SoBro area of Indy. I've established myself within the Sahm's world as a trusted Yelp critic, often both criticism and praise with equal enthusiasm and fairness and, according to their leadership team, with the kinds of details necessary for effective follow-up. It's also well known that I'm a wheelchair user, a fact that I mention in nearly all my reviews or, at minimum, that influences my reviews as I inevitably mention accessibility. So, I couldn't help but smile when I pulled up to Liter House and immediately realized that they had, in fact, taken great care to ensure easy wheelchair access from multiple appropriate parking spots to the side to a delightful, ADA compliant concrete ramp to the left of their main entrance and a floor plan that offers multiple options for wheelchairs. While they didn't go to Next Door American Eatery extreme of adding in automatic doors, the truth is I would definitely consider this A-grade accessibility. I had intentionally held off on being an early Liter House customer because of what I saw as one red flag - the website wasn't done. I arrived about 3pm on a Friday, an odd time to arrive at any restaurant and perhaps a death knell for a new restaurant. I would describe the decor as a weaving together of retro Indy and German traditional with a warm kitschy feeling accentuated by the short, winding hall at the entry, the ever dominating presence of the brewery area, and the intimate, darkly wooded main dining area that made me think of 1950's Indy restaurants. There's a combo of booths/tables and hosting area that greets you, though this being an odd time for lunch/dinner the hostess was actually away from the area but did quickly identify me and immediately turned her attention to me. The menu looks intimidating. I promise you - it is not. The tagline on the website says it all - "Bavarian Inspired. Indiana made." If you're a German delicacy purist, you'll likely say "Nice try." If you're used to the usual Sahm's menu, you'll probably get a little lost at first. Liter House was lucky enough to snag Chef John Adams, formerly of Bluebeard, whose creations here for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch lean toward German-tinged and German contemporary with hints the Midwestern sensibility necessary to survive in this market. Liter House is definitely an experimental effort, but it's a rather grand one with a 110-seat family dining area and bar with private meeting spaces and a 200-seat banquet room also available. The still under construction complex is also adding a barbecue and beer pavilion and a rooftop wine and whiskey bar are in the works. I was a little thrown off to be told that I had arrived during "Happy Hour," a time with a somewhat limited menu that didn't exactly make me happy. Fortunately, the week's specials plus starters were still available and I had no problem finding something for what I considered lunch. At $12, the Alles Geht: Kubanisch includes house made Cuban bread, Serrano ham, smoked pork loin, emmentaler, pickles, and kraut mustard with choice of side. Appetizers/Starters range from $5-10, meals tend to be in the low-to-mid teens (some go higher). I would place Liter House comfortably in the mid-scale price range and fairly consistent with most brewery/pub type establishments. I will confess I was a little concerned about food given my tendency toward "plain" foods and my somewhat sensitive system. The meal came with a side (I'll confess I chose boring yet delightful house cut fries). The food was sublime. While I had never had anything like this, I believe essentially a Cuban with a German twist, it was absolutely spot-on. The fries, while maybe not in keeping with the restaurant, were a perfect complement. While a meal delivered at 3pm may be suspect, this was top notch. My server, Hannah, was a friendly and somewhat introverted delight. She was helpful, attentive without being overbearing and had a low-key sense of humor. She gave me time to linger, though it's my understanding Liter House can snag bigger crowds later on and the lingering time may be more difficult. The only slight glitch, very slight, was plopping down the check not two minutes after telling me I could linger. If nothing else, psychologically that sends a "time to go" message. The hostess also gets kudos for spying my empty iced tea glass and filling it while Hannah was off serving another customer. Again, little touches mean a lot. I did not try beer, though definitely will in the future. Check out their website for the list, though you shouldn't be surprised to see mostly German-themed brews. I could likely go 4 stars, but Liter House really is a bold culinary statement in Indy and what's already good should only keep getting better. So, 5 stars it is.
Out of all of my Yelp check-in's, the two spots I have frequented most are Bent Rail (RIP) and Big Lug Canteen. When I learned that the Sahm's Restaurant Group was taking over 5301 Winthrop Ave., I wasn't worried one bit about the space's future. Eddie Sahm, Scott Ellis, and their team have mastered the art of being decent and pretty good with their decor, food, and beer, and Liter House is no exception. Thank you for giving this space new life and gifting SoBro with a top-notch brewery and restaurant. My lunchtime recs: -Shishito Peppers -Tomato, Peach, & Cucumber Salad (Thanks for not using greenhouse tomatoes!) -Potato Sauerkraut Balls (I appreciate having a meatless option.) -Eggplant Schnitzel -Currywurst (It's not the traditional version but still worth ordering.) -Spaetzle Mac & Cheese -Alpenhorn IPA -Goat Ranch Helles Lager
Ride your bike on the monon and make a stop at Liter House! No bike racks yet but plenty of spots to lock up your bike, if needed. Great service for only being open a few days. They offered their beers in Liters and 1/2 liter beers and full bar. The bratwurst was delicious and was served with a homemade mustard as well as sauerkraut. Grab some friends and check out Liter House soon!
Right on. Eddie Sahm and John Adams hit a home run here. If you like German food and beer, this is YOUR new go-to place in Indy. I've had all kinds of craft-brewed kolsch stateside, and they usually fall short. This is the closest I've found to the real deal you'll get in Cologne, Germany. The place looks nothing like it's predecessor (Bent Rail Brewery), transformed instead into a stylish contemporary gastropub. Expect to find a abbreviated menu of German food classics, but elevated and modern. I ordered the bratwurst. Instead of just a sausage on a bun, Liter House slices it and presents it a top a pile of kale and sauerkraut with a couple potato dumplings. I swiped the mustard from my kiddo's soft pretzel (he wasn't going to eat it anyway) and polished off every bite. The bite of burger I tried was darn tasty as well, and I LOVED the pretzel bun. I really, really want to try to the brisket goulash over spaetzle, but not when it's 90 degrees outside. Can't wait to come back in on a chilly autumn evening and order this. The gigantic pork schnitzel we saw a couple tables over looked great, too. Worth noting on the kids menu--- you can get a soft pretzel as a side item with macaroni and cheese, chicken nuggets or a frankfurter. Being the proud parent of a 10-year-old who won't eat fries or fruit but polishes off any kind of bread, this is a BIG win. Hoping to get back in here very, very soon.
We went for brunch, and were a little underwhelmed. From other reviews i think lunch/dinner is the time to go. (I need to get my hands on their raclette fries!) The things to not miss: $1 oysters on Sunday, their bloody Mary's, their biscuits. Unfortunately the brisket on both dishes was a little dry from the heat lamp, but it had good flavor! The chai waffle was not crispy and seemed like it had been made hours ago. It just didn't have that chai pop I was expecting. Their sister restaurant that shares a space with them, half liter, looks really good and all the bbq items on the menu come from there. They have a great environment and a fire pit out back where we sat and finished our drinks after brunch. A more casual atmosphere, and it just smells amazing!
A great spot for brunch (also lunch and dinner) in the SoBro area. Menu has range from omelets, flapjacks, meaty treats, to baked goods. The Winter Farmers Market is housed in this space and several menu items boasted use of fresh local veggies or fresh bread. One of the things I appreciate most about Liter House is how spacious it is. Even if all of the tables are full, I don't feel like I'm sitting on top of the next person. There's room for wheelchair users to maneuver (and accessible entrances). I shared the poutine and was so happy with the flavor combinations. The food is German inspired, but has a lot of local and modern spin to it. Service was very nice, especially the host. I didn't catch his name but he was welcoming in a very genuine way.
We came to Liter's for both the Farmer's Market and Brunch. Unfortunately, I didn't confirm the Farmer's Market hours beforehand so I only had a few minutes to shop. Hopefully I can come back another day because there were some cool items here. One of today's brunch specials was based around the Broad Ripple's Farmer's Market which was a vegan special. There are several vegan and vegetarian options on Liter's menu. We arrived at Liter's before the rush and was seated quickly. Our server, Jordan, couldn't arrive quickly as she appeared to be tied up with a couple large tables. When she did arrive we found her to be friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The Bavarian inspired menu had many entrees and salads I'm looking forward to trying in the future. Today, we were here for their Saturday brunch. I ordered the Breakfast Brunch Basic with your choice of eggs, protein and toast. I tried the Smoked Pork Hash chopped and sauteed with onions, peppers and potatoes, topped with two scrambled eggs and Crystal hot sauce aioli and thick, hearty toast. The smoked pork was truly excellent and flavorful with large pieces of meat mixed in with the generous veggies. It is hard to find good hash and this certainly was one of the best I've had. I will order again. My husband ordered the Egg Sandwich with option of bacon or sausage on toast with scrambled eggs (his minus cheese) and served with a simple salad, fruit or diced potatoes (his choice). He noted the entire sandwich was bland and the sausage was mediocre. The potatoes were prepared well and he enjoyed a little more after seasoning. He wasn't terribly impressed with the sandwich and probably will not order again. The brunch menu has a nice variety with Ham & Grits, Salads, and several types of Waffles (Chicken & Waffle, Buttermilk Waffle and Meat, Waffle and Turchettis hot link and eggs or the every changing Jose's Waffle Special). I'm no expert on German food; I know what I like but want to try new things. They offer several sausages (bratwurst, bluwurst, currywurst), sauerkraut, schnitzels (pork, chicken or portabella) and several German specials. Of course you'll find all the drafts, ciders, seasonal and canned beers plus cocktails, spirits and wines. I enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, my breakfast was fantastic and Jordan provided excellent service. I'm sure I'll be back for brunch and the Smoked Pork Hash.
This was another Devour Indy find for my friends and I (not a find, let's be honest - nothing about this was 'accidental'). As a vegetarian with picky tastebuds, I was nervous: would we have enough to enjoy? After all, I wouldn't say German cuisine is known for its particularly stellar vegetarian offerings. But Liter House is a worthwhile investment! The ambience is cute, inviting, and the staff match the vibe: fun, uplifting, and ready to chug a pint with you post-shift (that's speculation, but wouldn't that be amazing if it were true)? We ordered off the limited Devour Menu and were decently impressed - the pasta and pretzels are the showstoppers. Its handmade pasta at its fine, soft and supple and oh-so-comforting. And pretzels? A must at any German establishment: these are no different. I'd give the salad a try too- the perfect compliment to our hearty pasta, even despite a chilly fall evening! If anything, you can miss the desserts. They're nothing to write home about, and an ale or stout is a better use of your calories and your wallet.

Well, I was hoping for a good dining experience from what people have told me, but it was not what I expected. The beer was good and the tomato, peach, and cucumber salad was wonderful. however, the blutwurst was salty, but ok. The Bavarian donuts were dry and not what I expected at all. The staff is friendly and professional. I did not feel I got my money's worth, and the items were overpriced. I would only recommend this place for the beer and the appetizers. read more
What a great time I had at lunch today. The staff was friendly, the beer was good, and the food was great! For those who remember the look of the place as its previous business, you won't believe what they've done inside (already) and outside (what is coming this fall!) After grabbing a spot in the parking lot behind the building, I noticed all kinds of construction taking place just north of the lot. Seems they are building a beer garden (may be 2 stories tall!) and their own smoke house. They have the people to manage that part of the menu with a little help from some of the finer local meat producers (Smoking Goose/Turchettis). I heard they are targeting having both the beer garden and smokehouse ready for Oktoberfest. Sounds like a reason to visit again! Inside, what was once drab gray walls and a huge vacant looking space has been partitioned with colorful walls dividing the main dining room from a private party area. The dining area is open to the bar area which is still in the same place on the west end of the building. Lots of splashes of color and German images on the shelves and walls. I grabbed a spot at the bar looked over the menu. They have a variety of German influenced foods and some beer brewed in house (you can see the equipment through glass walls on the north side of the room.) Although they don't offer flights yet, they are generous with allowing samples of their house and seasonal beers. I went for the Kitt, a Hefeweizen (4.8% abv) in a half liter glass mug. You could get a good workout doing curls of those! They also have full liter mugs ($11) available which you may want a straw to avoid having to lift! ha! I started my lunch with a Tomato, Peach, & Cucumber salad that was as tasty as it was to look at. Bits of chiffonade mint, pickled onion, Feta cheese and a dressing based on the Hefeweizen contribute just the right balance to the taste. I also went for the Bratwurst which has beer braised onions & sauerkraut, fried shallots, gherkin (diced), and mustard creme fraiche on a pretzel bun. The brat was bigger in the bun so I was able to taste the brat unadorned. Very nice! Then adding all the other flavors was even better. I got my choice of sides and highly recommend the Spaetzle mac 'n cheese. Not the typical mac and cheese that is bland or one dimensional. This had a savory quality as well as the creamy cheese taste. Best of both worlds. If you were a fan of The Vanguard, I understand that a lot of that staff has migrated to Liter House. There was a definite teamwork evident even though this was opening week. For instance, the bartender was swamped with orders from the staff on the floor, so it would have been easy for those dining at the bar to be neglected. But, other staff made sure to keep things flowing by bringing out my order, clearing my finished plates, bringing silverware, etc. Teamwork cannot be ignored in running a great food/beverage place. They are off to a great start. I really enjoyed dining and had conversations with a couple other folks at the bar. Everyone was excited about the place and seemed to enjoy it as much as I did. It was good that we were going to Christmas parties after Liter House because we didn't eat most of the food we were served. Although the drinks were good and the service pleasant and prompt, the food was so far below our expectations based on our first trip that I'm not sure I'd ever go back. We started with the raclette latkes which were bland and greasy. My wife was happy with her schnitzel, but I ordered the Korean short rib special (description attached). What I got was not short ribs at all but flank steak cooked medium rare. The rice was dry and crunchy in parts. The 65 degree egg had a runny white and over cooked yolk. There were cold soba noodles and raw mushrooms on there, and not any kohl rabi. It was a terrible dish to pay 18$ for and no one bothered to ask if I was happy with it. read more

UPDATE: Had the special, pumpkin bread French Toast with toasted pecans. It was everything! I was surprised to see they already dressed the toast with syrup..I'm not a big syrup fan and I like to control my sauces. They put the perfect amount of drizzle!! My daughter's steak was over cooked but they resolved the issue quickly without any questions..awesome service. She ended up getting the brisket again which was better than the prior visit. Mom stuck with the tried and true waffle, no complaints there. My niece opted for the biscuits and gravy ('shroom gravy), it was tasty as well. Updating this review from 4 to 5!! Maybe one day I'll make it in for lunch or dinner, until then breakfast/brunch options are winners! Original review: Kudos on the creativity but disappointed in the execution. I ordered the Broad Ripple Farmer's Market special; banana caramel vegan waffle with peanut butter pistachio crumble with potatoes. I also ordered a side of bacon. The waffle flavor was good but it was soft, not the crunchy exterior I was jonesing for. Because of the soft texture the center became goopy from the banana caramel sauce..not an appetizing texture. My mom ordered a regular waffle, it was almost perfection. Maybe vegan wasn't the way to go. My daughter ordered the brisket hash. The brisket was seasoned nicely. If you order this watch out for hunks of fat..wasn't expecting that when sampling the dish. The service here is pretty fantastic which is why I gave them 4 stars instead of 3. Our party of 5 was seated promptly and our server was very nice and funny. She played along with our somewhat quirky humor..we shared a few laughs. We also didn't have to ask for water or coffee refills..a lovely gentleman just seemed to have a radar on when refills were needed. The overall experience, including the farmers market, was such a hit with our group that we've made it a biweekly event. read more
I was first very excited when Liter House opened, due to the creativity of the menu items from the founding team of chefs (including John Adams, formerly of Bluebeard and Marrow). I visited during lunch and dinner a few times, and enjoyed unique dishes consisting of rabbit-bacon pate, cherry chutney, quark...even the currywurst was attractively plattered with large chunks of feta, pea shoots, and multiple colorful sauces. Liter House's menu (and chef team) has since changed, to be less ground-breaking and more focused on traditional meats and carbs...as well as the forthcoming Half Liter BBQ smokehouse opening on the building's back side. I understand that business realities and the average consumer's taste preferences probably meant that rabbit pate wasn't going to be a permanent feature, but it is still disappointing. However, it's not disappointing enough to leave a low rated review. I visited Liter House on two (2) consecutive days on a recent weekend, in order to get a nice "base" before Winterfest's beer onslaught. Service was friendly and the food came out lightning fast and hot from the kitchen. Yeah, perhaps now the currywurst just looks like a bunch of fries and sausages sloppily piled together with a scant amount of feta and sad side of curry ketchup, but it served its purpose as a decent tasting beer buffer. The Kilgore smoked trout brunch sandwich tasted great, but the included simple salad side was missing...and Lay's potato chips...really? It seemed like a missed opportunity to develop in-house kettle chips or similar (ooo, sauerkraut-flavored kettle chips). As for Liter House's beer, I am not a huge fan of Bavarian/German-style beers, so I won't hold that against them. It's cool that they are specializing in these niche styles. I was pleasantly surprised to see a gose beer during my last visit. I'm still in awe of the beautiful renovation inside Liter House, from its former Bent Rail "brewery" days...it's difficult to believe I'm in the same place. I'm hoping once Liter House more firmly establishes itself, that maybe after a couple years of stable business, they'll start pushing the envelope again on the cuisine. read more

I am torn writing this review because I wanted to love Liter House. I feel like to properly give a rating I may have to go back. Short synopsis: We arrived at 7:10 with a group of 6 people and were told a 30 minute wait. We got sat at about 8. We ordered around 810-8:15. Around 8:40 my boyfriend got his food. 10 ish minutes later the waiter checked on us and tried to find out why we didn't get our food. We were told the rest of the tables food hadn't been ordered. By the time I got my burger, around 9:20-9:30, I was just tired and lost my appetite. I will say that Adam, the waiter, was very apologetic about the mishap, and a women, who I think was the manager, took our food off of the bill so that was a little redeeming. Besides that mishap, here is my review of the food and beer: -The pork schnitzel was great. It had a nice, juicy flavor and the egg and cheesy grits complemented it perfectly. Two other couples ordered the sauerkraut balls with meat and had good things to say. They said, "I've never tasted anything like it. I'd give it an 8/10." The pretzel appetizer was also purchased by another couple. It was small but it got "okay" reviews but was pretty standard. It came with 3 dipping sauces (pimento cheese, beer cheese, and I'm unsure of the other) that all tasted good. My burger wasn't so great. The meat was dry and overcooked and my pretzel bun was rock hard. The fries that came with my burger were awesome though. They reminded me of Penn Station. They tasted fresh and had the perfect texture. -They only have two sizes- the liter and half liter. Most of the beers are the same as Big Lug, which are okay but not great. The two seasonal drafts were good and the German IPA was also good. The Kitt is the Hefeweizen and it had a great flavor profile with a hint of spice! I'm not sure if that type of beer is supposed to be served warm, but it was only slightly cooler than room temperature. The Jonah was the pilsner and it was not what I was expecting. It was hoppy and more full bodied than I thought it would but I like IPAs, so I enjoyed it. I liked the subtle hint of fruit at the end. My company got invited to an event that was held here. It was a liquor tasting event, cool right? The first thing I noticed was the location is very centralized, but the down fall was parking availability , very slim especially with a full house. We had to park down the street and walk a bit, not terrible, but would have been good to know before hand. As we walked in I immediately noticed the vibe. The desire, the wood flooring and the super cool lighting all made for amazing ambiance. The event was kind of all over the restaurant, with the main part being held in the event room. They provided the appetizers for this event. They had chicken sandwiches, pulled pork, a charcuterie board and a few other snack items. It was very well displayed and tasted great also. The bar is also really cool, as there are two. One has liquors and some beers and feels more like an intimate bar and the other side is all beer, and a cool frozen beverage area, it sits in a much more recognizable restaurant. There was a walk up window where you could see food being prepared. Massive chalkboard menus and cool signage. Very fun. They have bbq and I must say it's AMAZING! Definitely going back on my own time to explore more. read more

Stopped in after shopping the winter broadripple farmers market for brunch. It was great! They had a couple of specials including a waffle. There were many things on the menu that sounded wonderful but I stuck to a bloody Maria and Brussels sprout Benedict. The beneficiary came on a pretzel bread! read more
After attending the Broad Ripple Winter farmers market we decided to grab a bite at Liter House. It's super convenient since the market is right inside Liter House. Since we came right when they opened at 11:00 AM, we both ordered breakfast. I got a beer and their breakfast sandwich which was your basic sandwich with a kraft cheese slice, scrambled eggs, and bacon. My boyfriend got their special, which ended up coming out 10 minutes after my order. Overall the food was alright and the beer was good. read more
BIG FAN! I am a sucker for good German food and this is my new favorite place for exactly that! They stay true to the traditional German style food while also putting a fun twist on some of their items. If you are up for it, make sure to get a liter of beer with dinner. I drank the flying horse and it was delicious! We may have overdone it on the food because we left extremely full but everything we had was well worth it! We ate the currywurst, pork belly and latkes. I am looking forward to the summer there because they have a really neat outdoor patio going in. read more
I loved Liter House! I also LOVE that they take OpenTable reservations, which made it so easy for 4 of us to get a table at 6pm on a Friday. The entire restaurant was packed. Our server was appropriately attentive, friendly, and helpful getting my gluten-free friend the right dish. It was fun to get the larger steins of beer and I enjoyed my half-Liter Hefeweizen (I had to drive, wish it was a Liter!). We ordered the goulash, sauerkraut balls (with meat), the burger, the pork schnitzel, the roasted chicken, and the curry wurst. We loved it all! Everything was cooked perfectly. My chicken was incredibly moist. It was a very large portion, so I left very full. I would definitely order it again. I loved my husband's schnitzel (with the egg on top! Love that modern touch). I wish we had more time to order a dessert, but we had plans elsewhere (boo). Next time!! read more
One of my favorite restaurants in all of Indiana! Without a doubt, some of the best beer and entrees you will ever consider. They also have amazing appetizers! The atmosphere is very cool and the service is astounding! I will continue to go here for years to come. Their knowledge of beer is off the charts. Looked at the menu online before coming in and was looking forward to all of the delicious sides. Sadly come to find out sides can only be order d at lunch, I really wanted to try the potato pancakes with apple sauce. I went for the curry bratwurst and it was delish. I absolutely love Liter House! I went for brunch and had the Schnitzel Biscuits & Gravy (Red Eye Gravy). The service was great and the staff was friendly and welcoming. The food was absolutely mouthwatering and my plate was completely clean when I was done. Liter House is now one of my go-to restaurants in Indy and I highly recommend that you visit soon too! This was a first for me. I haven't had a ton of exposure to German food, so I figured I'd try it. My work had a volunteer event here that the owners were gracious enough to lend space for, so for that, I have to give them props. They opened the restaurant slightly early to serve our party, too. They were great hosts. Now...for the food. Again, not a ton of exposure to German food previously. I was unsure of what to get, but surprisingly, there were a lot of things I wouldn't have minded. I decided to go with the BBQ brat on a pretzel bun. The BBQ sauce was tangy but sweet, very enjoyable. It was either lukewarm or cold when it was put on my brat. I wasn't prepared for that, and I'm not sure if that's how it's usually served. The brat itself came with crispy onions and pimento cheese. A great combination. The brat itself had good flavor, too. I had Fritos chips as a side, which surprised me. The other members in our party complimented the beer (they come in liters or half-liters, apparently) as well as their dishes. I wouldn't mind visiting this place again. The service was friendly and the food flavorful. read more

I have had both of the current schnitzel items and while both were outstanding, I particularly like the "skate schnitzel". All of the appetizers I have tried were on point. This place has a great atmosphere, an interesting menu and liters of beer! I had a liter of the King's Jive English brown, and it was delicious. The pretzel was a normal sized pretzel, so not a very shareable appetizer. It was a little crispier on the outside, not like the buttery softness you would expect from a regular pretzel. It came with 3 sauces: spicy mustard, beer cheese and pimiento cheese dip. My table mostly liked the pimiento cheese, but one of us loved the spicy mustard. I think all the sauces were pretty good, but I almost wondered if it would be better if they made us choose only one to be delivered with the dish. I think I liked the mustard better when I didn't eat it right after I tasted the cheese. For my main course, I had the currywurst. I don't really associate curry with Greek food (or German food for that matter), so I felt like they just couldn't decide if it was going to be Greek or Indian. The curry flavor mixed with the tzatziki sauce actually went really well together. I'm not a ketchup fan, so the curried ketchup wasn't for me. We thought it had a distinct cinnamon flavor. Now I AM a potato fan, so the garlic feta fries were awesome. Overall I thought the dish was good, but I'm going to try something else next time. I also tasted a bit of the chicken and dumplings. The dumplings were dense. I really liked them, but my friend who ordered them didn't. She preferred the flavor of sauce and chicken. The spatzle was extra cheesy. I definitely want to order it for myself next time. I also got a taste of the Texas Ghoulash. Definitely had a smoky barbecue flavor to it, which is a flavor I like so I give it a thumbs up. Overall, I enjoyed this place, so I will be going back. I'm also biased because it's only about 5 minutes walking distance from my house. I have several vegan, vegetarian and gluten free friends, and they actually had several options for GF and vegetarians. Their menu states that they have vegan options coming soon. Decided to try out the Liter house this weekend hearing it was a pretty good spot since Sahms took over the location and remodeled it. The Liter house is a German style location and in the back of the building is the half liter which is a BBQ location that you seat your self. You can get a BIG 33 oz beer in your German style mug to get you started. The Elotes are a fantastic app that could be a meal. Had a couple sandwiches which were good and the mashed potatoes have a different taste almost as if they mix sour kraut juice in it. read more
This place was a nice spot for weekend brunch! It is conveniently right off the monon with plenty of parking both for cars and bicycles. I got the Carolina poutine and my boyfriend got the ham and girts. Both were delicious with generous portions. read more

Great place! Vibe is very friendly and relaxed. Beer is obviously good and really good value. Food is fantastic. The short rib paparrdelle is one of my favorite meals I've gotten anywhere in Indy. Not sure why we don't come here far more often. Highly recommend! read more

I had no idea what to expect. And when I approached the entrance I was fully prepared to be disappointed. But the moment I got inside I knew I was in for a treat. Snazzy modern decor that's a mix of your standard brewpub and an upscale cocktail bar. Concrete floors with stained wood and a great view of the brewing room. I ordered the bratwurst, thinking I should start with something familiar. What came to my table was a beautifully plated brat with a mix of accompaniments that launched the meal into the stratosphere! The flavors were amazing and went beautifully with the German style IPA I'd ordered. The dessert menu came, complete with suggested "digestifs," including the Tawny Port I ordered alongside the Schokolade (German chocolate cheesecake), making the end of the meal as fabulous as the start. The only (slightly) negative thing I can add is that it's a little loud, owing to the industrial decor. But it's not unpleasantly loud and certainly not a deal breaker. Go here! Trust me! Thought we were going to Half-Liter, but we ended up sitting inside on the Liter House side with friends and it turned out to be just about right for the evening. Liter House wasn't overcrowded and it was easy to hold a conversation and catch a football game that was going on in the background. Food was solid and the beer was abundant - $10 for a large liter beer of their Goat Ranch Lager, which was excellent. I'll definitely be back. read more

Well that's what google told me at least aha Havent been to many German restaurant and bars, especially from being from Boston it's mostly Irish joints. Had a great time. Wasnt able to stay very long and try a few more things, but from what I had and what I could see, i think i would of liked anything and everything, if it was put in front of me. I got the sausage and fries and they were on point! I figured I get something sausage related cause thats a German thing right? Lol but regardless it was fire. We came here because they host the Broad Ripple Farmers Market during the winter months! We decided to stay for brunch after we were finished with our shopping! I was left underwhelmed by my breakfast choice! It was an étouffée over biscuits, and it definitely left me wishing I had ordered my husband's meal instead! He got the smoked brisket hash, and it was much more flavorful than mine! I would definitely order that if I came here again for brunch! My meal is no longer offered on the menu, so I must not be the only one who felt it was subpar! read more
