Literarily Book Shop is my favorite bookstore. Although I live in Dallas, I travel to El Paso regularly, and I always make time to visit the store. It's locally owned and the owner is always there. He is very knowledgeable about the books he has for sale. I love browsing book stores but the ones that are part of a chain generally have the same boring mainstream books. Literarity is clean, well lit and the books are organized by topic. Fiction is sorted by author name so it's easy to find books if you're going to get a specific book or want to check for books by a specific author. I highly recommend this store! read more

Literarity Book Shop is a gift to El Paso! If you're looking for rare and unusual books, signed first edition and regional titles, you have come to the right place! Literarity Book Shop is a treasure trove of books! It was a treat, and unplanned stop as we were running errands on the westside of town, and remembered to stop by on the recommendation of a friend. The visit did not disappoint! It's located in Peppertree Square, nestled among tall trees, in the most beautiful courtyard I've ever seen! Bill is the owner, and what a delightful person! He took the time to talk with us, showed us several titles by regional authors, and made us feel welcomed, and right at home! I found the books to be fascinating, and all in such pristine condition. I did purchase an autobiography, and a book on the history of retablos. We most definitely will be returning, and I give Literarity only the highest praise and marks! Highly recommend this quaint little bookshop. Stopped in this morning after several friends suggested visiting this store. Very well organized, but has a very "homey" vibe to it. Books are incredibly well priced, and the selection is very impressive. The store owner, Will, is a genuinely caring, friendly, and knowledgeable individual. It's bookshops like this that we need, not price gouging chain stores like B&N that don't actually care about the costumer. Even if I wasn't in need of a new book, I would come back here just to say hello to Will, and to randomly peruse his inventory. I've never been to a book store with such a wonderful owner. Bill was so incredible in helping recommend books that my friend and I would like based on our interests. He has a lot of books within a range of prices and value, from used popular books to new releases to rare pieces. He was incredibly friendly and had such great recommendations from horror to cooking, which is my favorite and my husband's favorite, respectively. I also love that he has books from authors with diverse backgrounds and that he also values and features books from local authors and poets. My friend was able to get a signed first edition of Cujo and another book signed by her favorite author. I grabbed a Prada Marfa book, one that's very limited in print. read more

I heard of Literarity a few years ago and always wanted to visit. Fortunately, I was able to visit on my last day in town before moving out of El Paso. I had recently graduated, and was looking for a gift for myself and a friend who also graduated. I had some ideas in mind and Bill, the store owner, was able to help me track down exactly what I was looking for. My friend and I love his book recommendations! Even though it was near closing time, he took the time to chat with me and did not rush me. We talked a bit about our journeys to where we are today and where we are going. He was very kind, offered me his contact info in case I needed help to where I was moving, and even gifted me the book that I had chose for myself. Literary is a hidden gem within the hidden gem that is El Paso. I am so glad I was able to visit before I moved away and regret not having made more visits prior to moving. Given all that El Paso has been through in the last several years, these books are nostalgic reminders of my wonderful time living and studying in El Paso. After spending an hour tucked away in between books at Literarity Book Shop, among the many ways I could describe LBS, there are two words that are at the forefront of my mind: simply charming. LBS is a beautiful book shop accented by the warmth of the equally charming couple that owns the store. Trust me, you'll love LBS. I hijacked my husband's afternoon fishing at Ascarate to hightail it to LBS and I had very little info to give him other than saying, "It's a locally owned bookstore." I walked in to find the walls lined with books, some new, some old, and I knew at that moment I found my book home. I can't tell you how many books I pulled from the shelves, but what I can tell you is that each and every book I touched was in excellent condition. I found out from the owners later that they do complete the repairs themselves when they find a book that's in need of some TLC. LBS has limited space, but they've done a wonderful job of not making it feel that way. The bookcases that line the walls are just about floor-to-ceiling, but the shelves in the center of the room are three or four tier and the one lining the windows looking out at the courtyard is about waist height. There's nothing about LBS that feels daunting or cramped. I love the way LBS divides the different type of books available too. Each section is marked by the genre spelled out in Scrabble tiles. Oh and the best part (you know... besides the fact that you're surrounded by so many literary treasures)? Comfy chairs for those of us that like to browse books while in the store. The selection they have made my heart pitter-patter just a little bit faster each time I scanned the title or the author of the book next to the one I was currently looking at. Stieg Larrson, Ernest Hemingway, Emily Dickinson, Sara Gruen... just to name a few and those are just the ones that I can remember off the top of my head. LBS carries classic books, new books, signed books, and rare books. LBS has it all. And if they don't have what you want, they have no problem looking for it. My advice though: if you find a book you want, buy it. Or at least ask if they can reserve it for you because I can only imagine how different their inventory will be from month to month. So your next question is probably: What are the prices like? They're so reasonable that it took everything in me to not leave with an armful of books (at the moment I have a stack of read books that still need a shelf to call home... I have a problem, I know, I'm figuring it out), but I couldn't pass up on the complete collection of Earnest Hemingway short stories for only $10. With rare books and signed books, you can obviously spend a lot more on a book in LBS, but even those I thought were reasonably priced. And finally, the owners. They are an absolute joy to talk to. They're so hospitable and very easy going. After we talked to them both for just a few minutes I had the immediate feeling of how important being able to share their love of simply reading a good book with the community is to them. Not only have they done a wonderful job of selecting and (when needed) cleaning the plethora of books that are available in the store, they also have a vast knowledge of literature and can make recommendations for any type of reader. You should absolutely make LBS you're first stop when searching for a good book to lose yourself in. read more

Absolutely lovely! I visited a couple of months ago, and while the store was technically closed on a Monday, Bill saw us loitering outside and waved us in to browse. We had time to browse, and after picking out a couple of books on our own, we got to talking more with Bill at checkout. He was able to give great recommendations across a wide range of interests -- my boyfriend and I pretty much have non-overlapping reading interests, and we went from two books to nearly a dozen by the end of our visit. I was also looking for a good gift for a book-loving friend's young kid. It was a beautiful hardcover that I thought would be 2 or 3 times more than it actually cost! So, something she'll appreciate when she's a bit older. I wouldn't say this is a place with a large section devoted to kid's books, but the space isn't huge and I can understand. Still, Bill's knowledge and thoughtfulness in helping you find the perfect read for yourself or gift for a friend is worth the visit alone. Amazon/Alexa can't do this for you (yet...)! To top off an already wonderful experience, Bill offered to ship the books as we didn't have space to bring it back with us to NY, at a very reasonable shipping cost. I'm not even sure if what he asked for in shipping really covered the cost... The books arrived, carefully wrapped and in perfect condition. He even emailed to make sure he had the address correct. Highly recommended if you are in El Paso, whether you are a book lover or not. There are gorgeous collections in pristine condition to enjoy visually, and I'd bet Bill and his wife (and co-shop owner) could find something perfect, and perhaps even unpredictable, for you.
