This state park was a great find and only a 30 min drive from mid town. They had different trails for different levels of hiking. Our trail ran alongside the creek and we got to dip our legs in the water while others were swimming and tanning. If we weren't so tired we would have made a whole day of it!

The old center is bordered up from the inside, floor to ceiling glass. There are abandoned notice boards and camp horror feel by then. Approaching the bridge that crosses the marsh grasses seem nice and then a long 3/4 mile hike along a singular path with no roundabout back to the point of origin. When we reached the view of the river (stream) it built up nticipationnfor what we saw towards the end of the trail a nice Mecca of cascading waterfalls. Nothing big but it was cool and pleasant to sit in. To top it off the end revealed a nice wooden covered bridge.

We have lived in the area for 5+ years and we are 5 minutes from this gem and didn't even know it! There is a stroller friendly trail nestled in between trees, and a wetlands area with elevated boardwalk. The trail parallels the Nickajack Creek which flows into the Chattahoochee River, so it is a fast flowing creek. We walked for an hour or so on this scenic path and sat under the gazebo for a moment after our little hike. It's so nice to discover something new and nearby.

The other dog owners are usually very nice and monitor their dogs. I have not had any issues. Sometimes, they have no dog bags available to clean up after your dogs when they relieve themselves, so I tend to bring a few of my own just in case. The dog park is behind the animal shelter near the skate park and not on the side where the recreational center is located. I like that the gates are easy to access but also close together and divided by small dog and large dog areas. If you are alone or if you come when it is less dogs out, the options available make it easier to keep the dogs safe or separated if needed. Deer Lick Park also offers recreational activities. We participated in basketball and it was nice to see this facility in action for group pictures and games. The staff is friendly and responsive and this park offers a nice place for exercise and community engagement. I also remember attending a Zumba party here many years ago. Overall, this is a nice park.

The Concord Covered Bridge was originally built in 1872 and replaces an original bridge built in…read morethe 1840s that was destroyed during the Civil War. The bridge is still in active use today as a one-lane bridge. It has a maximum height requirement and there are signs with warnings on the way to the bridge. I didn't try to drive it with my 10' 6" RV of course, but it was nice that I could at least get close enough that I didn't have a long walk. There is minimal parking near the bridge. The historical marker nearby points out that "The Concord Covered Bridge has the distinction of being the only covered bridge still in use on a public highway in the metropolitan Atlanta area." The drivers I saw utilizing it seemed polite enough to wait for traffic. There is no pedestrian lane inside the bridge, so I simply jogged behind the last car in each direction to cross. The bridge is a Queenpost design. The interior is unlit and it seems to have been reinforced extensively with steel girders that should keep it going for a while longer. If you have ever travelled between Smyrna and Mableton there is a chance that you pulled up to this interesting, single-lane and somewhat sketchy wooden bridge that crosses Nickajack Creek. If you are coming from the Smyrna side of the bridge, which I consider to be the side with South Cobb, then you have to cross another single lane bridge. This bridge is not historic and is just as "functional", it sits near the Historic District/Silver Comet Trail entry point that features a small parking lot and covered pavilion. On both sides of the bridge, you must go under the hanging beams which are there to test the height of your vehicle and deter larger vehicles from attempting the bridge...so if you hit the beams, you will hit the large steel beams that are there now to protect the actual bridge. Seeing the bridge on foot is quite tough, as there are no sidewalks leading to it on either side and really the only safe way to walk is to take one of the nature trails that are off the Silver Comet trail to get as close as possible. The trail I speak of ends at the property line of the house next to the bridge and opens up at the end onto Concord and at the base of the bridge. While the history is fascinating, the functionality has become less enthralling as the population grows in the area and the use grows. Majority of folks know how to use the bridge, it is basically like a stop sign. You stop at the base of the bridge to make sure it is clear then you go, if there is another car on the other end, then you alternate sides...however, folks are impatient so sometimes you will just see a line of cars pile through causing the line on the other side to build up. Folks, I tell ya! Overall, the bridge is cool part of the Cobb County history. I am glad that they have updated and upgraded along with reinforced it throughout the years. I will say that lights on the inside could be helpful for those dark nights though...just a thought Cobb County!

There are a number (four, I think) of lighted tennis courts that stay busy during the spring and summer. A lot of people come out to walk the path around the park and others simply come out to enjoy the green space with their kids and/or pets. There are two covered areas for cook-outs and the bathrooms are regularly cleaned. Nice park.
