The bridge on the playground is about to collapse and it's been like this for at least a couple of weeks now. I hope this improves since this community benefits from this park.

It's a great spot to walk your dog or go for a run. The tennis courts are in really good shape for a public park, and the kids playground area is pretty new as well. The basketball courts aren't bad, and they aren't too crowded. In fact, I can't remember seeing anyone on the tennis court (so it's turned into a street hockey court for me sometimes). There's also a little community garden in the park.

I'm generally not in the mood to deal with the hordes at Piedmont Park, and John Howell Memorial Park is the perfect, low key solution. Here's a partial listing of all the ways I've taken advantage of it:: - Picnics. The grass is well kept and never gets too buggy. It's perfect for setting out a nice spread and not having too many uninvited beasts. There's a canopy of beautiful tall trees to provide shade and backrests. Waste receptacles are nearby. A couple of times, I've even seen people show up with their own picnic tables, chairs, and grills. - Absentminded meandering. There are brick pathways and other soft walkways that let you wander without worry, there's nothing to trip over and there's no places for nutjobs to hide. - Fierce frisbee. The field here is remarkably free of divots, bumps, and protruding abnormalities. I declare it an ankle-safe zone. I often run into other disc throwing enthusiasts and there's plenty of room for everyone [unless you're in one of those Ultimate Frisbee leagues]. - Grassy Bocce. Again, because of the relatively smooth surface and the wide playing area, it's perfect for a good game of bocce. There are sporadic tiny hills and mulch-covered spots you can incorporate into your game to make it more interesting. - Bubble Making. If you ever want to make massive bubbles all by yourself and then grow startled at the spontaneous presence of Children of the Corn, this is the place. I swear, the kids come out of nowhere and start trying to pop my bubbles. I'm like the Pied Piper up in this piece. - Making Myself Sick on The Insane Spinner Thing. The playground here is awesome. It's nothing like the playgrounds I grew up with. For one thing, the ground is covered in that rubber mulch stuff, making it incredibly delicious on your joints when you plummet from the monkey bars. It's also nice for jogging. There's the usual fare: swings, slides, jungle gym, but then they have a couple of sculptural, cool things that make you throw up. I don't know their names, but they involve spinning. - Volleyball in a Bikini, Almost Year-Round. They have a little beach volleyball court set up, complete with sand, sand bags, tall referee chairs, and almost naked people. It's pretty rad. I've even spotted a dude with a metal detector and arm floaties [not kidding] when the games are over. - Hanging Out With Well Behaved Dogs. People bring their unleashed dogs to play and I've never encountered a disobedient or annoying dog. I'm pretty sure the dogs that come here are way better than other dogs. Dog owners are courteous and always pick up after their dogs. There's several stations set up for dog owners, with complimentary waste bags. - Stuff I Can't Mention. + + + The only thing John Howell isn't really very good for? Boomerangs. But after 52 tries to dislodge our boomerang from the tree branch, we realized the soccer/softball field across the street is better equipped [and free of all foliage] to handle that. It's freely available on the weekends. John Howell isn't huge, by any means [something like 2 acres], but it's well planned out, well maintained, and relatively low-traffic. That's more than I can say for the entire city of Atlanta. I just want to kiss it.

I've found a new place to take my dog for a walk. It's in East Point. Brookdale Park is not an…read moreofficial dog park but not many people go here so you can let your dog run off the leash. If, though, your dog takes off and wont come back you wont want to do that here because it is not fenced in. It has a nice little creek that my dog likes to play in and get wet. This is the only park i've seen that has a creek. It also has a cute little bridge that he likes to walk across. There are brand new tennis courts (will be using these soon) and a new basketball court. It is pretty spacious so my dog can have a good run and get his exercise. There are no watering stations for dogs but that is a non issue since there is a creek and your dog can drink from it. But if you're the type of dog owner that i've seen since i've been in ATL that only gives his dog Evian or water that has been filtered through a 100 point filtration system then you probably wont want to do that. But i'm sure it's alright. They also have nice playground equipment for the kids, a covered picnic area (but no picnic tables......are you kidding me), and a bathroom.

I've recently laced up my sneakers and got back on my journey to wellness. I'm taking mornings to…read morefocus on me and center myself with purpose and intention to have a great rest of the day. In doing so, I either walk or jog around Coan Park. It's a lovely place nestled on the edges of Kirkwood and Edgewood. It sits across from some of the local businesses, as well as some of the areas lovely homes, and Sammye Coan Middle School. The park has a basketball court the looks to be sponsored by the Atlanta Hawks, a large playground area, an indoor area that was used during the election cycle for early voting, covered pavilions, a softball/baseball field, a large grassy area for football, soccer, etc., and workout equipment that comes complete with instructions on how to use each piece. I think the equipment is the best park of the park! Oh, there are plenty of shady areas to rest under on hot summer days, water fountains to keep you and your four legged friends hydrated, and things to do. The park is a great option for exercise, as I see folks out doing yoga and group fitness classes on my morning runs. Try it out and let me know what you think. Now, full disclosure, parking can be scarce when there are plenty of things happening in and around the park, but MARTA runs right nearby and is a great option!

The park is managed by the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy who main focus of the parks conservation. At 199-acres, the park is Atlanta's 3rd largest park and is located among Buckhead's Memorial Park neighborhood. The park somehow claims the Bobby Jones Golf Course and Bitsy Grant Tennis Center. It runs along the Peachtree Creek and is a memorial to those who died in the Battle of Peachtree Creek You will see a small memorial called Debbie's Place, in the front of the park, that honors Debbie Felker. This is a nice low key park that sits low in a ravine. As I mentioned, the park is not short on green space that could be used to play field sports such as soccer, football, and baseball. You could also fly a kite, have a picnic or play catch there as well. The park has a lot of shade. You will find an outdoor seating area with tree stumps that looks like it it used for learning. There are also a few picnic tables and benches to sit as well. It should be noted that the park is in a floodplain, so it floods during heavy rains. The park has a playground area, that is on a bed of wood chips. There are toddler swings, a large net climber structure, a play structure with slides, tunnels, and bridges, a saucer swing, and ADA/traditional swing, a 4-person see-saw, and a a large play structure with a bunch of tall slides, monkey bars, bridges and a canopy. There is also a small slide structure for the littles. The equipment is a bit older, but still in decent shape. The park hosts events such as Sunday Sweets in the park!, Memorial in Motion, and free tree tours. This is a nice park with a paved path that is popular among walkers/joggers and those walking their dogs. There are also wooded/nature trails to trek as well. I like this park even though it is lacking amenities such as a restroom, basketball courts and is not modernized. Definitely worth a visit.

I really like the playground structures here. There are things for little-littles (toddlers) and older kids. There are nature walks near a creek. There are picnic benches and kid swings. Throughout the walk, there is signage about some of the tallest trees and other facts. You can also see some of the biggest leaves that we have ever seen.
