This place operates on a tab-based system, so no need to wait for a check, since the tab is opened for you before you're seated. This worked very smoothly! This would be a great place for a date or anything requiring an aesthetically pleasing ambiance, the wood lining and ceiling along with the blackboard menu give this place a great vibe.

Everything is counter service so you'll order your entire meal at the counter along with drinks, the cashier will give you a number and the service staff will bring your items to your table. My friend and I ordered several different items on the menu to try out, we got the etouffee, red beans and rice, and a mushroom salad. My favorite out of those items was the mushroom salad with vinagarette dressing, who doesn't love mushrooms and some greens! The etouffee was rich and savory with what i believe was their rotating protein of the week. Can't really go wrong with red beans and rice, these are like an upgraded popeyes version. To end the meal we tried their beignets which weren't stellar but reminded me more of a fried donut with some powdered sugar sprinkled on top. I'd come back but maybe not get so much food since we both definitely left stuffed!

Well, if your menu is…read moresimple and some of the items aren't cooked/baked that well, then it's going to be a letdown. Normally, I wouldn't ever order from a restaurant like this since none of the menu items satisfy a craving of mine, but I had a friend in town who was craving just this. Rotisserie Chicken (3/5) - sure it comes with some pretty tasty sauces (chipotle and salsa verde), but the chicken itself was actually quite dry. I'm sure it's juicier on most days, but this time the chicken was quite dry, even the dark meat portions. Baby Potatoes (4.5/5) - These were pretty flavorful and the roti sauce was a nice addition. But this style of roasted potato is probably on the lower tier of potato forms. So even though these were well done, it's not my favorite form of potato. Baguette with Butter (3/5) - The baguette wasn't really baked well. I got two of them and the outside was a bit too tough (slightly crunchy, but mostly on the hard side). I expected something crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, but the toughness of the crust made it difficult to enjoy the fluffier interior. Arugula salad (4/5) - Solid arugula salad. Nothing special about it but I needed some veggies and acidity for balance. Overall, kind of a disappointing experience.

They add goat cheese and arugula on the sandwich as well which adds extra flavor. There is also a dressing you can get, I like to ask for it on the side so I can dip it there. The potato's are excellent as well but would prefer to have them a little bit more crispy. It's fast service - not a sit down restaurant. Would recommend for a delicious lunch order that's fast and easy.

How many places can you say that both main dish and sides are good? Also, for it to be reasonably priced? Ordered the 1/2 chicken plate. Comes with (1)breast, wing, thigh, and leg. Sides were beans and Cole slaw. Ordered a small order of Mac and cheese. Total was ~$26. Whenever my wife and I travel, we usually share plates so we have more room to try other things. 100% enough food for two people to hold you over for a solid meal with out making you take a nap. If you're hungry, that plate it self will absolutely keep you full for the 50% of the day. Staff has always been friendly. Service is generally quick but there can be a line depending upon when you arrive. Pro tip is to order to go if you have a nearby hotel or to door dash. If you eat inside, inside has plenty of tables and chairs. Cafeteria style more or less where you sit what's available. Plenty of staff to lend assistance. Generally people are chill

I was warmly greeted at the entrance by the gentleman manning the cash register and takeout orders. My server was Hannah C. and she took great care of me and her other customers. She was pleasant, thoughtful, attentive, and had a great personality. She told me about their Saturday special (today only) on fried chicken wings. She was thoughtful in bringing one of those fly fans to my table because I sat in the corner where they seem to congregate. She was a joy (10/10)! I ordered the starter of Fried Green Tomatoes, served with ranch dressing (4/5). I finally got a chance to try it. It had a nice seasoned coating on them. The tomato itself was firm and slightly bitter but I liked them. I ordered the Snacks 2 piece Dark, which includes the chicken & white bread (4/5). The chicken was crunchy, juicy, and had a little heat. YUM! Come check them out. Support your local business.

I was impressed with the chicken fried steak and the complimentary corn muffins and sweet potato biscuits. I even got a slice of sweet potato pie once near Thanksgiving. But Hoover's closed down the S.A. restaurant a few months later. No biggie. I'll just go dine at the original one in Austin. A few months later on a rainy and ugly day in Austin in March 2006 I rode the bus from downtown to here. The restaurant was huge and roomy and I got seated but had to wait a long time for a waiter and left as soon as I saw people that got seated after me got served first. A few months later I rode the bus to here and got seated and was served by a young white guy who seemed exhausted and wanted to be anywhere except work. 20 years later I found out the sad news that Hoover's last day in business would be today May 31,2026. I drove here from San Antonio and noticed how much the restaurant has changed. It got smaller inside. Maybe the 2020 pandemic had something to do with that. I got seated and waited on by a friendly black waiter and ordered an Arnold Palmer and a cup of gumbo for an appetizer which was good, hot and satisfying. For the entree I got the chicken fried steak with black eyed peas and buttered spinach. The sides were okay but the CFS was a bit tough when I cut into it. For dessert, a slice of chocolate cream pie was the perfect way to end the meal. I came here one last time last week and got here earlier than I had arrived last time. I was waited on by a Hispanic waiter who seemed friendly but I had a weird feeling he was staring at me weird whenever he left my table. For appetizer I ordered a small cornbread and 2 biscuit muffins. They no longer served the free corn muffins and sweet potato biscuits like they used to serve 20 years ago. I got the Jamaican jerk chicken and a hot sausage link with cowboy beans and coleslaw. The beans were great and the slaw was okay. The perk chicken seemed a bit dry but good and the sausage was good but not as spicy as I expected. The cornbread was good and so were the biscuit muffins that were big for just 99 cents a pop. I ordered the banana pudding for dessert and that was a good conclusion to my last meal here at Hoover's. Hoover's Cooking is an Austin original that will be greatly missed. I hope whatever restaurant that moves into this soon to be vacant space will serve good food at an affordable price and won't be like the other places on Manor that serve outrageous prices for food that is just mediocre or subpar.

You can't go wrong, everything on the menu is a hit. We shared appetizers, like the queso w/chips and the cornbread. I ordered the special, the hamsteak and jezebel, with sides salad, mac n cheese, and with a sausage link because why not. I had to remember to save room for dessert because the cheesecake here is amazing! I had the chocolate and cranberry cheesecake, which is worth every bite. The service is also excellent. They know they're closing but that did not stop them from taking care of our group like we were family. Our group enjoyed every bit of the experience. I hope to make it back again. This place has too many good memories and we will miss every bit of it. Get some merch!
