When I was out to dinner with two friends, they both highly recommended R&B's Steak and Fries. Apparently, they're best known for their Philly cheesesteak sandwiches. Having enjoyed plenty of authentic Philly cheesesteaks over the years...many of them in Philadelphia itself...I approached this food truck with a healthy dose of skepticism. As soon as I arrived, I met Armand, who told me that he and his brother started the food truck about seven years ago. He was warm, personable, and genuinely Texas-friendly, which immediately set a positive tone for the experience. Ordering a cheesesteak is a simple three-step process: 1) Pick your cheese. 2) Choose your toppings. 3) Be polite and place your order. (I loved that part!) I ordered the cheesesteak with American cheese and grilled onions, along with a side of fries. Let me tell you...this sandwich completely exceeded my expectations! For a moment, I felt like I was back in Philly. The bread was soft, fresh, and flavorful. The steak was unbelievably tender and packed with flavor...so good that I couldn't stop talking about it. Let down, waited 45min for the cheesesteak, was very salty and dry. Jersey Mikes is a better option. Most reviews here are very positive but could be because most customers are from the bar where they share a parking lot and the pub goers have a lower hurdle after drinking. Let me tell you, this place is LEGIT! It's a food truck with 2 very cool owners. I am in Austin from New Braunfels and stopped in and man I am glad I did. This is about as authentic as you can get outside of Philly. 1 picnic table so not much seating but grab one to go, you will not be sorry! I wish they would open a truck in New Braunfels. Had an amazing experience at R&B steak and fries for my first visit a couple weeks ago. I got a Philly cheesesteak with provolone cheese and then added some of the gooey yellow cheese on top. I also added mushrooms which I loved they were cooked perfectly in with the meat and overall, it was such a good sandwich. They also came with fries and they were super crispy and super salty. It was the perfect combination for me. You can bring out all their little sauces that they have. They have some like Dijon musters and barbecue, some ketchup, and using all those for your sandwich, and your fries is top tier. It is a very casual food truck. You can grab your food and take it to go. Or you can grab it and go out on their picnic tables that they have. And it's on east sixth. The people are super super nice!!! read more

Stopped by the Grackle after seeing a show on the east side and found the R&B truck outside; I'm glad sure glad I did! It was 11pm and I was ready for 2nd dinner lol and man that sandwich hit the spot. I have no real experience or opinion on a cheesesteak so I can't speak to authenticity or correctness but it was hot, cheesy, and absolutely tasty. I got provolone, mushrooms and onions (never been a big bell pepper person), and I could taste it all! Lovely mushrooms, juicy meat, savory onions, chewy bread, melty cheese... I want another right about now... XD My husband had ordered from across the street but when he tried a bite he was a bit jealous. The staff were super friendly also, they walked me through the differences in the sandwiches and when my friends went inside the bar they offered to bring it in to me which they did on a tray with a variety of sauces. It's okay- cannot label their sandwiches correctly as I got the jalapeño one unknowingly when I ordered NO jalapeños and I triple checked the writing to make sure it was mislabeled. More importantly, when I took a bite of my supposedly correct sandwich, it also had some spicy jalapeño flavor; much less BUT cross contamination is REAL! Recommend NOT ordering a non-jalapeño and jalapeño sandwich together. Not a bad sandwich but will not be back. Sadly disappointed :( read more

First time review. I've been looking forward to having their Philly Cheesesteak for a long time. I was told it would take 20 minutes for my order. Total was $23 w/tip and no drink. Added fries to Cheesesteak hoagie. Roll was chewy like it had been microwaved and the cheese was underwhelming. Fries were good and plentiful, but the bread was a distraction. Service was nice and friendly but I can't stand the "tip shaming" at just about every place you go, You're not getting any service other than someone taking your order, but they're begging for anywhere from 15-30% tip for what?! I tip for service. Why tip at a food counter?! I hate that concept that's so prevalent. Overall I am in no hurry to make another trip there. The value is jus not there. read more

As a good philly boy living in Austin I have done a fair amount of cheesesteak consumption. R&B is the best I have found in the ATX area. The owners are passionate and have a great product. Lived in Philly for 26 years this is not a Philly cheese steak. The meat quality was solid which is why it's getting 2 instead of 1 but they put 1/3 of the meat they should have in the sandwich which made it very light and thin. Pretty disappointing with all the rave and reviews it gets. read more

Dropped in to check out this spot with my two sons after a middle school basketball game. We were celebrating my youngest's 1st career game (7th grader) and his success. Why is this even relevant? I shared these details with the owners when we showed up (proud dad) and they immediately engaged with my son and 'big-up'd' him. The smile on his face was worth the stop on its own, but more than anything, their immediate engagement with my son was a great sign of the kind of good people they are and that likely would translate into the food they cook! First off, I ordered double meat because I assumed they were going to be skimpy on a regular order. WRONG! I would have been better off with a regular because my boys sandwiches were loaded. We all loved our cheesesteaks. Perfectly seasoned, shaved steak, and a great proportion of the add-ons. Honestly, what set the cheesesteaks off was the bread! Inside the food truck park next to Ramen Tatsu-ya - one of my favorites for the variety of trucks. I make a meal by ordering from a few trucks and I've been craving perfect fries. Sometimes you just want a krinkle, ya know? These are perfectly crispy and seasoned with salt and pepper. They also are the only reasonably priced fries on East 6th ($3.75 ... I'm not kidding that a few blocks down a side of fries is $8...). Hands down the best place to get your cheesesteak fix in Austin. Others come close (Chicago WiseGuys in Round Rock and Jewboy Sub Shop come to mind) but don't quite hit the spot the way R&B's does. I mean they do just steak sandwiches (and fries), so their focus on excelling at a single product shows. Also you gotta get the wiz, c'mon... They are comparatively reasonably priced - about $11 pre-tax for cheesesteak with grilled onions+mushrooms+jalapeños - and they serve up perfectly seasoned ribeye every time. Great food, buuuuut.... They're never open. I mean, sure their truck might be open. But ordering from food delivery? It used to be consistent. But it hasn't been in about six months. It's constantly closed. Or they won't deliver until really late at night. Every time I really want to order from them, like always when I'm actually craving it in fact, it's closed. So hot! If you're looking for the newest cheesesteak in town, R&B's got you covered. (In wiz!) Crying big alligator tears due to the closure of Way South Philly, we went out on a guys day out and of course that included some epic eats. The clarion call was clear: "Cheesesteaks!". Having heard about R&B from a a friend, I was excited to check it out and the steak sandwich did not disappoint! Beyond that, the service from who we presumed was the owner was outstanding. He actually brought us out our food, napkins, etc which is not typical for a food truck and even an array of sauces to augment our experience. It was like the return of table service, but only for a food truck. I can't say that it's what I want in a food truck experience but it did show the passion and care of the proprietor which was translated into the god as well. The sandwich had a good amount of meat and cheese (I got the wiz). I wish it had more of all the extras (mushrooms, peppers, onions, jalapeños) but now I know to ask for more next time.
