This one was installed back in February 2013 as part of a service learning project by students in the Sunrise Leadership Academy. The Little Free Library movement started in Wisconsin in 2009. By installing little bookshelves in communities, the "librarians" hope to promote literacy and the love of reading, as well as a sense of neighborhood, by building free book exchanges worldwide. The concept is "Take a Book, Leave a Book." You are welcome to drop off your gently used books, and to help yourself to anything that catches your fancy. It's a library with no late fee! This one, built right by the playground in the park, is in a great location. I can imagine parents and children checking out the books, after an energetic hour in the playground. However, there doesn't seem to be a lot of usage though. Most of the time I pass by the library (repurposed from a newspaper stand) is rather empty. Hopefully more people will discover and use this little gem!

It's so wonderful that they were able to put a Little Free Library right in front of a bookstore. Sharing the love of books with all. I love the whole concept of Little Free Library. Take a book. Give a book. We have so many books in our house between the kids and myself that I literally drive around with books in my car just in case I find a Little Free Library. I feel bad when I find a book but don't have anything to give back in return. Anyone else see a LFL and when the books are all over the place, you MUST reorganize? That's ME!!! Lol. I just have to. That's how I find all these cool Little Free Libraries. This one is located in Cedarwoods Townhouse Association in Pempbroke Pines. It's a bit hidden inside the community and not by the main front entrance. You will find it next to the walking path. I've score a few good book trades here including a great book by Lisa Jewell, Then She Was Gone. I love these Little Free Libraries. It encourages reading!!! Especially for kids. I get excited every time I snag a book that's on my to be read list.

This one is right outside the office of the park, in the form of a repurposed newspaper stand colorfully painted (by students, I believe). Honestly, who visits the office when they go to the park, except maybe to reserve a pavilion or something? Nonetheless, it has a nice view, overlooking the playground and the pond. So if you ever come to this park, stop by to drop off or pick up a book or two.

They gave a welcome goodie bag with information, which was cute. It's a small space for kids to explore, create, and learn. The interactive exhibits and hands-on art stations can keep kids engaged while making the experience fun and educational. A spot that inspires creativity. It is definitely geared towards older, school aged kids. I had my 8 month old with me and their wasn't much for him to do. It probably would be good for lower elementary students. They had painting stations, and a lot of recycled materials to make puppets. Admission can be pricey but its worth checking out on a hot or rainy day. I'm glad they do events for educators to see the space!

One thing that could be improved is the wildlife children's center needs a major deep clean. It doesn't look like it has ever been cleaned. There is so much dust everywhere and has lots of spiderwebs around the baseboards and underneath the furniture. Great spot to get a spider bite. Lots of the content and activities are old and out of date.

The Ft. Lauderdale Women's Club was founded on January 11, 1911 as the Woman's Civic Improvement…read moreAssociation with 18 women as the first club members. The club is 2 1/2 months older than the incorporation of the city of Ft. Lauderdale. A 135 by 100 foot lot was donated by Ft. Lauderdale pioneers Frank and Ivy Stranahan. Ivy was a school teacher and a very civic minded person. She was involved in African-American, women's and Native American's rights, as well as the first chapter of the Audubon Society and the Red Cross. The Seminole's would paddle up the New River in their canoes and trade with the Stranahan's for the good's they couldn't grow. Ivy would use use her school teacher background the educate the Seminole's when they visited. Ivy served as president of Women's Club from 1913 until 1916. The name of the group was changed to Fort Lauderdale Women's Club in 1913. They took on many of the projects needed to improve the town like adding streetlights. In 1912 the club started the first volunteer fire department with a donation of $100. The clubhouse was designed by noted architect August Geiger in a Mediterranean Revival Style. Building began in 1916 and finished in 1917, their clubhouse was the community's first library. Located at Broward and Andrews Avenue it is in the center of the City of Ft. Lauderdale that grew up around it. Today the Women's Club continues to partner with non profits in the community like Broward Outreach, Children in Distress, and the Wildlife Care Center. They also give scholarships to high school students. In order to pay for the upkeep of the house the club rents it out for community functions and weddings. The clubhouse is surrounded by beautiful gardens, In recent years the club has struggled with keeping the downtown homeless population from destroying the property. A large fence now surrounds what used to be an open park.
