This cute library box is located on the north side of Jefferson Park. Hard to miss as it is a…read morenicely hand painted box that used to be a newspaper vending machine. As I'm trimming down my own home library, I'd already dropped those books at other libraries so today it was a browse and take opportunity. This library was very well stuffed with mostly children's books but some fiction and non-fiction too. The former library biography of Abraham Lincoln was my choice today. This is charter number 78136 and the steward is the Girls Scouts LFL of Jefferson Park. The online caption reads, "Evelin Rienzo of Girl Scouts Troop 292 partnered with Fort Myres non-profit, And Literacy For All (ALF), to repurpose and decorate this newspaper vending box. This one was installed back in February 2013 as part of a service learning project by students in the Sunrise Leadership Academy. The Little Free Library movement started in Wisconsin in 2009. By installing little bookshelves in communities, the "librarians" hope to promote literacy and the love of reading, as well as a sense of neighborhood, by building free book exchanges worldwide. The concept is "Take a Book, Leave a Book." You are welcome to drop off your gently used books, and to help yourself to anything that catches your fancy. It's a library with no late fee! This one, built right by the playground in the park, is in a great location. I can imagine parents and children checking out the books, after an energetic hour in the playground. However, there doesn't seem to be a lot of usage though. Most of the time I pass by the library (repurposed from a newspaper stand) is rather empty. Hopefully more people will discover and use this little gem!

They have a great website and an app to help you find a box. Arriving- This box is on the Northbound side of US Route 27 and is beside a boat landing parking lot, a picnic area, and a Mexican restaurant. They are a snap to find and park. The Box- This one is nothing fancy and is Charter #16803 in their system. It is very well mounted as it should be to withstand Florida's hurricane season! It was packed with books of all types. There were thrillers, romance novels, young adults, paperbacks and hard covers and even children's books. It was so packed that I had trouble adding a couple of books that I donated myself. There was truly something for everyone and they're free! How to Help- Check their website. Find the closest box and donate. There's lots more you could do if you really get into it! Be sure to download their app that has lots of cool features. Conclusion- This is one of those organizations that needs 10 stars! Enough said! This box itself is in great shape and overstuffed with books so 5 stars!

So if you ever come to this park, stop by to drop off or pick up a book or two.

The idea really caught on and today there's an estimated 25,000 LFLs in all 50 states and over 70 countries. Maybe you'll wonder, but I haven't seen any in Miami? I was wondering the same thing too for the longest time. There are several LFLs in Sunrise, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa, even one in Key West. But I haven't found one in Miami. Whenever I mentioned LFL to my friends, they would say, oh, someone will come and steal the books - no, they'll steal the library - in a few days. Surely Miami is better than that. And proof is here, in this Little Free Library in the tiny village of El Portal, where the beautiful little wooden box has been installed since February 2015. And still surviving, offering reading enjoyment to adults and kids alike. Take a book or two with you, and if you find a title you like, bring it home. A library without late fee.
