The teachers are so creative and engaging, my daughter never wants to leave school. One day she comes home talking about the painting projects, the next day she breaks into the songs she has learned, another day she talks me through the process of tilling the ground and planting seeds -- turns out they had spent a couple days tilling the ground and planting grass in the backyard. This school encourages a sense of independence and inquisitiveness in its students, and has engaged and delighted my daughter since day 1. It is a truly refreshing and unique find in the otherwise daunting world of Brooklyn preschools.

The space is extraordinary - there is no other pre-school in Brooklyn that has has a nicer space - worth it for that alone! The school continues its 50-year tradition of progressive education. Your kids won't be saddled with pre-this&that, but will actively develop executive function skills and learn how to function in a school setting. Best of all, they will learn to love school and will look forward to every day at OFNS. OFNS kids generally do very well when they move on to kindergarten. As a parent-run cooperative, parents are much more involved with the school and each other than is probably typical. While the annual Christmas tree sale shifts may be tiring, they are also a great bonding experience, and a lot of fun. Old First Nursery School is one of those things that makes Brooklyn special!

I asked for a refund and they declined despite a very clear written refund policy that we are inline with. when I called to talk thru this sure that there was a misunderstanding the person there was rude and dismissive. they gawked at me saying I couldnt get my physician to complete their form in time without knowing anything about my situation or how my doctor works. they assured me my doc could do it in 5 mins, talked over me and denied everything I mentioned as being true. it was the most infuriating experience I've ever had. I would not trust my child with someone of this type of moral fabric. Listening, practicing compassion, meeting people where they are, valuing community above money are ethics that i Value and I want exemplified by those who I entrust my daughter to...

We explored many options in the neighborhood and I'm convinced that Playgarden is the most nurturing, caring and stimulating environment for little ones. She's learned so much and loves her teachers. It has a strong literary focus and the kids get exposed to music, movement, science, nutrition and letters every week. The teachers work so hard and always impress me with the lessons for children. You can also tell that teachers love their students and their job. From experience, I can say that that is not always the case. The teachers use a play-oriented approach, children are free to learn by playing, and to explore at their own pace. Teacher/child ration is excellent and parents are invited to participate in class activities every couple of months. Teachers N & H are fantastic, consistently able to tune in with children, and authentically able to connect at each child's level.My child was mainly Italian speaking at the beginning of the year and both teachers have done an amazing work helping her to integrated in the class. They went as far as learning basic Italian to help her with her transition from Italian to English. Finally, in case that matters, it is a cheaper option than most other schools in the areas.

Upon enrolling into Zadie's early childhood development center I was excited. My child was getting…read moreintroduced to preschool and I was referred to them so I was happy. I informed the school of dietary restrictions for my child and also had given all forms required by them prior to starting from the doctor. Unfortunately this allergy was not taken seriously. On multiple occasions my child was served foods that they were allergic to. After the 1st time I was then told that the allergy chart was not up and that there was a miscommunication and it was understood that there were no restrictions for the child's diet. (Even though there was doctors notes in place) I was also told I would have to bring food from home or that they can serve the sides of the day excluding the protein. I was also told that the child would be separated from the rest of the class to make sure of the possibility of the child eating someone's else food wouldnt happen. I thought this would be a good idea but still from then on I was so paranoid that I would remind the staff the day of and call after lunch each time this item was on the menu to assure my child was ok. On the second occasion I spoke to the teacher who ASSURED me that my child did not eat the allergic item. 30 mins later I get a call that my child actually did and was experiencing allergic reactions. I was told that the teacher, yes the teacher was out of the room durning lunchtime and that the aid served lunch and fail to check the chart. With all that being said if you don't want to micro manage your child's school just skip this one. The staff is undertrained and the most important things get overlooked.

The kids are excited each day to see their teachers, their friends and their classroom and come home bursting with stories to tell of group art projects, dramatic play and physical achievements in the yard. The teachers really get to know each child and family and facilitate parental engagement with class blogs, the regular "all school sing", birthday celebrations and evening classes on parenting and child development. In its first year, Brooklyn Schoolhouse has succeeded in building a wonderful community and our family is very happy to be part of it.
