Reasonable kayak rentals out of a slightly-dusty marine shop…read more This place isn't on the water --- kayak rentals involve a guy with a pickup driving your kayak to the shore, with you following. At the end of your adventure (about 10 minutes before you're done), call the shop from your cell phone and the guy will bring the pickup back to collect the kayak. This whole system worked better than I expected. I got a single kayak --- a quite reasonable Perception Swifty 9.5 sit-inside in good repair. The basic aluminum-and-plastic paddle was nothing special, but in reasonable repair. They also do tandem kayaks, small motorboats, and very small sailboats (Sunfish). The marine shop is a little dusty, and looks to do lots of outboard motor repairs.

Boat…read morewas about 15 years old so nothing fancy (no AC outlet or radio), but boat itself was in good shape, functioned well and we had a fantastic day in the harbor. Note to boat renters: the shop does not use credit cards except for boat rentals, and required a $2000 authorization that it appears they ran through an old computer in the back office, so we initially had issues with finding a credit card that their system would not decline. Just be aware that this can take a significant amount of time even if your credit cards have never had issues previously, and they don't take AmEx. As mentioned in the previous post, the rental shop itself was not on the water, but was an easy 5 minute drive with the shop bringing the boat on a trailer and then picking it up at the end of the day with a stop by the gas station on the way back to the shop to top if off that the customer pays (very economical, only went through 12 gallons of gas). The shop requires that someone in party is an experienced boater and they take you out on 5 minute test drive before letting you go. Even though we were never in shallow water and convinced we didn't run into or over anything, there were some dings in the propellor noted at the end of our trip. Steve verified that that they could have been there prior to our trip, and was honest in not charging us for them. If you are fine with a more social (we got to know Steve quite well) while not the most streamlined renting experience, then good bargain!

I live in Connecticut but found Scott's Boat Service in Rhode Island. I had a number of calls to make sure we had the right equipment. Scott Lehigh, the owner, is extremely courteous, helpful and really spent the time to make sure I got the right equipment. He always got back to me promptly. I bought the equipment, his pricing was very reasonable, and he got the stuff shipped to me really quickly, at a very good price. I've dealt with a lot of mechanics, boatyards, dealers and miscellaneous boat and marine service people over the years, and many are unreliable and not even competent. But they don't get better than Scott's. Every aspect of my dealings with him was first rate.

They offer great classes for adults (and probably for kids, but I'm not familiar them). Their level 1 curriculum includes - Sailing under just the main - Tacking and jibing - Mooring (J-turns) - Points of sail - Rigging and de-rigging - Etc. The level 2 curriculum is about the same - Sailing under main and jib - Methods of stopping under sail (like heave-to) - Harbor radio basics - Emergency situations There isn't much difference between I and II class except a jib. That being said, the goal -- from what I can deduce -- is to just get you comfortable with the boat. Instructors for the school are really top notch! Miles, Catherine, Stewart, and Jonathan all know their stuff, have years of experience, and genuinely enjoy teaching. Their method is to give a brief intro to a technique in the classroom and then get out on the water and do them. Level I students typically have a tutor in the boat while Level II just have another student. Instructors are in power boats on the water giving (or shouting guidance) while under sail. There are about 10 students in a class but only two sailing in a boat at a time, sometimes with a tutor. This does give you a good amount of time as crew or at the tiller. You almost always sail with a different student so that you get experience knowing how different people react. They also offer open sailing on the weekends, racing on Wednesday nights, and weekend day sails to a picnic for REALLY cheap. It's a great way to get more experience and test out your skills. This is probably one of the best things about the school is the after-hours access they provide at a very reasonable price ($25 for 3 hours recreational, $25 to race for a couple hours, $50 for all day picnic sail). I've also experienced their private lessons. Which I can only praise. I learned more in 8 hours of private lessons than I did in the classes. There is no classroom setting, it's all one-on-one and in the water. Well worth the money. I'm considering taking more lessons to learn more because I missed a Level III class about adverse conditions. I have only one complaint that could not be rationalized away. During the chalk talk students are allowed to ask questions... and I put those questions in two categories 1) Questions that could be answered by just DOING what we were being taught and 2) Questions that are completely irrelevant to our sailing level. I complain about these because these questions took time away from being on the water. I believe its inconsiderate to the other students -- most of our funds are limited and we can't keep taking classes. It's frustrating too because most of those questions were from Level I students (Level I and II are grouped together in classroom). If instructors could recommend questions be held until we're on boats or tell students not to worry about advanced questions that would really give more time on water and not boil the blood of the Level II students (all in my class felt the same). Overall though I give it four stars. If I gave them five it would be saying they're perfect -- and they're not. But they are pretty darn close... and I like that! I will continue to throw money at the Edgewood Sailing School. I'm not staff, just a very enthusiastic student!

Cove Haven is one of about 20 yacht yards under the Brewer brand from ME down through NY. Being a member at a Brewer marina there are some perks: a few nights for 'free' at other Brewers, discounted gas... What really makes Cove Haven is the people though - great management, friendly fellow Sperry-clad boat owners, and an overall calm that can only be achieved on the water.

First of all this place is so much fun, it's a little family company I believe and it's super cute, for couples, families and first dates just be sure to call and reserve a spot so there are kayaks ready for you. When we arrived we couldn't find the place it's literally all the way down, just keep going straight until you can't go no more. The only reason why I'm not giving the company 5 stars is because the location is right where everyone has their boats so there was absolutely no parking at all, we parked really far and had to walk far, only concern when you're exhausted you don't want to walk far to get back to the vehicle. When we arrived we were greeted by Ryan, such a sweetheart. They greeted us got us life vests let us choose our kayaks either single or doubles and then we were off. OH wait Ryan did give us instructions first on how to enter and exit, because it was a very busy area full of amazing boats, what a scenery! My mom and I had such a great time, we had 2 hours to explore and even though it was my moms first time she adjusted very quickly and it was very easy to learn! I've done it before but I very much still enjoyed myself. The pictures we got were so great and we had a really great bonding time. There's so much to see and it's so quiet and peaceful. And everyone is just so nice. There was planes flying above, people swimming and fishing nearby but not too close, very relaxing. On our way back we ran into the other kayakers and we all chatted a minute and all reminisced on the great time we had! When we got back Ryan and Cooper were there to greet us and help us out the Kayak's. I really enjoyed it and I would do it again, this place even convinced me I need a Kayak in my life. THANKS AGAIN!
