When my girlfriend suggested sailing lessons as an activity on our vacation, I was a bit…read moreapprehensive. It wasn't being on water that bothered me, it was learning to sail a boat surrounded by billion dollar yachts. We decided to give it a shot at Sail Newport. When we arrived there weren't too many signs pointing to the sailing center. And it only seems as if one person was actually working there. Luckily we got checked in rather quickly and we met our instructor Peter. After picking out some life vests we went down to the dock and got into our boat. After Peter took the boat out onto some open water, he gave steering to my girlfriend and rope duty to me. All I really had to on rope duty was pull them tight whenever the sail switched direction. After a few minutes of sailing, my girlfriend and I switched. Steering was a bit more complicated but I got the hang of it eventually. Peter was a great instructor, we didn't feel nervous at all despite it being our first time sailing. Honestly this was a great experience and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Newport! You can't visit the sailing capital of the east coast and not give it a try.

We spent $170, only to find the boat packed like sardines with no proper seating available for us. I had to sit on a section clearly marked "Not a Seat," which was uncomfortable and left my back sore. The red wine I was served was brown and tasted spoiled, and the crew seemed inexperienced and disorganized. While the sunset and scenery were beautiful, the overcrowding and lack of adequate seating made it nearly impossible to enjoy them. For the price, every paying guest should have a proper place to sit and be served drinks that are fit to consume. This was the excursion we were most excited about, which made the experience even more disappointing.

There was lots of interesting information and I enjoyed seeing the harbor gates up close. It is short, 60 minutes which is just enough. The boat is small, seating, maybe, 12, so it's easy to hear the captain/guide and to ask questions and you always have a good view of which ever attraction is being discussed. Our guide, Captain Cathy, was knowledgeable, sociable, well organized and fun to be with.

Any fears I had were quickly put to rest by the new team. They handled my situation with professionalism even though they were in the middle of a major reorganization of the business side of the yard and understanding current state of the business during the start of the boating season. I live far enough away that it is inconceivable I will ever be able to use their services again. They were aware of the situation and still went out of their way to accommodate a number of crisis that popped up as we got ready to sail away from the boatyard. It is very rare to find this level of service from any business. I even received a call from one of the new management team asking about the trip to the new port a few weeks after we left the boatyard. I tried to convince them to open a facility in my area; unfortunately they are very busy with the current location.

Reasonable kayak rentals out of a slightly-dusty marine shop…read more This place isn't on the water --- kayak rentals involve a guy with a pickup driving your kayak to the shore, with you following. At the end of your adventure (about 10 minutes before you're done), call the shop from your cell phone and the guy will bring the pickup back to collect the kayak. This whole system worked better than I expected. I got a single kayak --- a quite reasonable Perception Swifty 9.5 sit-inside in good repair. The basic aluminum-and-plastic paddle was nothing special, but in reasonable repair. They also do tandem kayaks, small motorboats, and very small sailboats (Sunfish). The marine shop is a little dusty, and looks to do lots of outboard motor repairs.

Boat…read morewas about 15 years old so nothing fancy (no AC outlet or radio), but boat itself was in good shape, functioned well and we had a fantastic day in the harbor. Note to boat renters: the shop does not use credit cards except for boat rentals, and required a $2000 authorization that it appears they ran through an old computer in the back office, so we initially had issues with finding a credit card that their system would not decline. Just be aware that this can take a significant amount of time even if your credit cards have never had issues previously, and they don't take AmEx. As mentioned in the previous post, the rental shop itself was not on the water, but was an easy 5 minute drive with the shop bringing the boat on a trailer and then picking it up at the end of the day with a stop by the gas station on the way back to the shop to top if off that the customer pays (very economical, only went through 12 gallons of gas). The shop requires that someone in party is an experienced boater and they take you out on 5 minute test drive before letting you go. Even though we were never in shallow water and convinced we didn't run into or over anything, there were some dings in the propellor noted at the end of our trip. Steve verified that that they could have been there prior to our trip, and was honest in not charging us for them. If you are fine with a more social (we got to know Steve quite well) while not the most streamlined renting experience, then good bargain!
