75% bread :)
Shelly D.

Used to come here all the time when I lived around the area but have to say service and quality has declined (+) taste amazing and is one of the best I've had in NY (-) service is ok, slow, so I recommend calling ahead of time (-) the portion has gotten a lot smaller over the past few years (-) price also went up significantly, while I acknowledge it's part of inflation but $9 for a sandwich with almost no filling and 75% bread is not acceptable

bbq pork banh mi #3
Silvie C.

First time caller, long time listener. I've been pretty faithful to ba xuyen purely due to proximity but had some appointments down 7th Ave and a gnawing hunger for a banh mi. This bbq pork banh mi ran $10 versus a $9 at ba xuyen. Thanh Da's banh mi featured a yeasty, shiny, micro-blistered roll which beat that of BX. However where the comparison fell short is that this ten dollar fighter had less pickled veg and no jalapeño (perhaps a pitfall of a language barrier). The pickled veg here tastes purely of a white or rice vinegar and sugar, no fish sauce or garlic, and shredded a tad bit thinner than most places. The pork tastes pretty similar to BX and Chinatown's banh mi Saigon, just less soy sauce. Swipes of mayo are hard to see in the photo and there was no sriracha added (not necessary imho). Overall I really enjoyed it but def needed to pull out some homemade pickled jalapeño for some scovilles.

#1 banh mi (special with all meats, extra jalapeños for spice)

Great bread! Crusty on the outside and pillowy on the inside but not too hard that it wrecks the insides of your mouth. Filling is flavorful and decent price for the area.

Banh Mi Đặc Biệt (Special Combination)
Will N.

My favorite banh mi in all of NYC. The fried pork in the Special Combination adds a savory yet sweet texture that no other place comes close to replicating. For $9, this loaf is worth my trek every time.

First time trying their banh mi and I also wanted an avocado shake, but the person working there said they don't make shakes anymore. Ordered the #1 (Banh mi, house special combination sandwich) and was asked to wait outside for 10mins. Waited about 15mins to find out the sandwich was sitting inside. So keep an eye on your sandwich. The banh mi was really good. Bread was nicely toasted, meats were good, but some pieces were too fatty. I also wished it had pate on it, that's actually my favorite part in a banh mi.

Number 1 very skimpy $8
Irene L.

The banh mi number one is now $9. Still tasty. Perfectly toasted bread with roast pork, pickled carrots, pate, head cheese and cucumbers. Service is quick no frills. Very solid banh mi. Too bad the price keeps increasing.

#1 (sorry for the SC filter)
Kio C.

This is my favorite viet sandwich place. There's really no competition in the area. I always get the #1 or #3 -- the only difference is #3 has more BBQ meats and #1 has more cold meats. Since #1 is $8 and #3 is $9 I've been opting for the cheaper option recently haha. Always call ahead because sometimes they're so backed up it takes 20+ mins for them to get to your order. If there's no wait then it's like 5 mins. The viet coffee here is good as well for $4. CASH ONLY. This is not a sit down place. It's super tiny so you just grab and go.

two sub sandwiches on a plate

One of my favorite Viet sandwich spots in Brooklyn! I must have been here about 4732743278 times that I might turn into a banh mi! There is always congestion on 57th street so it is recommended to call ahead of time and run in quickly to pick-up. TIP: If you do not plan to eat the sandwich the day of or within a couple of hours - it is possible to request to split the bread/meat from the vegetables so it would taste better the next day! They packed the vegetables into a zip lock bag and all I did was toast the bread/meat the next day and put it together myself it was quick, simple and delicious!!

The bread was hella crunchy and the ratio of meat to pickled veggies was solid. For $9 you can get really full.

The service was okay - it was obvious the server was brand new/still in training so I'm sure he'll get better and congrats to him on the new job! Btw, in case you were wondering this place is NOT Vietnamese-owned, or at least the server + the host + some workers in the back were not, or perhaps they're trilingual. In any case, I was a little sad about that because there really is a lack of good Viet food in NY so although other ethnicities are more than welcome to own places not of their own ethnicities, I was just hoping to find more Viet-owned Viet food businesses. That being said, I got pho bo vien (which I suppose now I know why there's no Vietnamese text on the menu... so this is the viet meatball pho??) and it was okay. Nothing bad, nothing special, probably a bit too pricey for what you get. I was hoping for some comfort food since this location is nearby. The broth was overall fine after adding some hoisin sauce and Sriracha. Unsure if I'll come again... the convenient location for me is probably the main selling point

You know when a place has a limited menu they take care of all their foods. We ordered a pork bahn mi and a chicken bahn mi. An order of pirk dumplings and 2 drinks. The lychee drink and the taro milk drink with boba. The taro drink was creamy and light when drinking. The lychee drink was like a lychee flavor soda but so refreshing. Definitely get the lychee if you are unsure as that is what the worker recommended when i asked. The dumplings were small but yummy with their homemade sauce. I wish they were bigger but no other complaints. The bahn mi's were delicious i got the prok and the flavoring were juicy with their homemade sauce pickled carrots and cucumbers slices balancing it out. The bread was so crispy i throughly enjoyed. I will stop by again another time for the delicious Pho smell that was at the restaurant.

I really thought I had reviewed Ba Xuyen before. I first ate here pre-pandy and it never occurred…read moreto me that I hadn't chimed in about this awesome spot. Well, let's clear that up now. The aunties are mentioned often in other reviews, and that's because they're amazing. They'll gladly explain what you need, especially when it comes to the super tasty (and extremely inexpensive) deserts that populate racks and the drink fridges here. Some are sweet, some are sour (the deserts, that is), they'll let you know. Honesty since a cake here is $5, you can afford to try everything! How on to the main reason that you came, the Banh Mi. You literally can't go wrong with any of the eight main sandwiches here. I've tried them all so you don't have to, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. The bread is crispy, the ingredients are super fresh, and the tastes combine perfectly. The decor is perfect for this kind of spot. No frills. There are three tables and a bunch of chairs. It's exactly what I want in a takeout type place. They concentrate on the food. So, to wrap this one up. Go. I'd say that I'll be back, but I've been coming here for years. If you haven't, it's time to start.
