3.5 stars. The man sat there and I can't get to the register because it's blocked off with a step ladder. I paid him and waited about 8-10 mins. I saw him looking for me so I realized my orders ready. He just tossed the banh Mi on the counter for me. It's $9 cash only for an original banh mi that doesn't have much filling as before. I know people rave about the other banh mi spot but this one is my favorite. I haven't found anything else close to their BBQ pork banh mi #3. The BBQ pork is a minced, sweet and savory almost like a pork jerky texture. The bread is crunchy but soft on the inside. The ratio of pickled veggies to meat is good and there's also an option to add peppers if you prefer spicy. This is a no frills takeout only shop, and also only accepts cash. Service is generally pretty quick and they speak Cantonese. Came and ordered their #1. Sandwiches are made to order so the wait was 10-15 minutes because there was an order ahead of mine. The sandwich itself was pretty delicious. It can use a little more meat and carrots/daikon but it hits the spot. The only issue here really was that when I went, a lady working there was sweeping and mopping. She had me leave the store so she can finish what she was doing before I can order. Also, the store itself is already pretty small and tight in space but they had a ladder out in the middle of nowhere which made it hard to even get to the register. I had a really frustrating experience with this place. I placed an order and literally called back right away to cancel it--this was my first time ever doing that. Instead of just helping me, the person on the phone started scolding me and claiming that I "do this every time," which is completely untrue. It was honestly shocking to be spoken to like that as a customer. Mistakes happen, and calling immediately to fix it shouldn't be treated like some kind of offense. First time caller, long time listener. I've been pretty faithful to ba xuyen purely due to proximity but had some appointments down 7th Ave and a gnawing hunger for a banh mi. This bbq pork banh mi ran $10 versus a $9 at ba xuyen. Thanh Da's banh mi featured a yeasty, shiny, micro-blistered roll which beat that of BX. However where the comparison fell short is that this ten dollar fighter had less pickled veg and no jalapeño (perhaps a pitfall of a language barrier). The pickled veg here tastes purely of a white or rice vinegar and sugar, no fish sauce or garlic, and shredded a tad bit thinner than most places. The pork tastes pretty similar to BX and Chinatown's banh mi Saigon, just less soy sauce. Swipes of mayo are hard to see in the photo and there was no sriracha added (not necessary imho). Overall I really enjoyed it but def needed to pull out some homemade pickled jalapeño for some scovilles. read more

I've been a long time customer of Thanh Da, going as far back to when their banh mis were ~$2!! Over the years, even as I've tried other banh mi places, Thanh Da remains my favorite. As of this review (May 2022), banh mis are $8 each. To be completely honest, I don't know which number I'm ordering off the menu - I just order a spicy banh mi! The BBQ roast pork in the sandwich is my favorite, and is perfectly paired with the other meats and pickled vegetables. A few things haven't changed over the years - they don't skimp on the filling, & the service is always super friendly and efficient. There is always congestion on 57th street so it is recommended to call ahead of time and run in quickly to pick-up. Small hole in the wall spot mainly serving Vietnamese sandwiches and beverages daily. They've also got a variety of fresh and dried snacks. Very tight space for a 'two-way' of entering and exiting. There's a high-top seating area but you may only step in to order and wait outside during Covid. About 2-3 people max can stand inside comfortably but with social distancing, there's only space for 1. I usually call before ordering to save some time. They do get busy and they only make a sandwich or two at a time. Standing inside for too long always leaves me with a strong food smell on my hair and clothing anyways. Been coming here since their sandwiches cost $3.75, they now run up to $8 and portions are getting smaller. I grew up eating #1, combo sandwich and #3, the bbq pork sandwich but currently loving #2, the Vietnamese pork roll sandwich. After having been to Ba Xuyen multiple times, my wife and I were seeking a new spot in Sunset Park to quickly grab a banh mi and we came upon Thanh Da II on the trusty old Yelp app. This place is as simple as it gets. We pulled over right outside and immediately noticed that it's without saying that this is a true hole in the wall. We walked in and were greeted by an incredibly friendly, smiling elder woman. There were a few stools and counter seating, but not much else. The menu was right above her on the wall so it was very easy to see what we wanted to order. Without much hesitation, we ordered the #1 (BBQ pork with ham) and #3 (BBQ pork) banh mi sandwiches for $6 each. We waited a few minutes, received our orders and took it home. Unfortunately, we didn't get to eat the sandwiches straight off of the grill as we waited a few hours before digging in. They weren't the best banh mi sandwiches I ever had, but they were simple, solid and still tasty. The bread was a bit cool, since we had waited, but all of the ingredients inside - the BBQ pork combined with the cucumber, pickled carrots, daikon, cilantro - worked perfectly together like a banh mi should. The #1 also included ham and some mayo, so there was extra flavoring in that, but the BBQ pork in both sandwiches were savory and good. For $6, it's hard to beat a better sandwich and the #1 and #3s here do the job. Banh mi's have always been simple, cheap and easy to munch on for a quick meal and Thanh Da II, with its no frills approach, definitely makes a solid one. read more

(Forgot to take pictures Bc I can't wait to eat it). The inside has been closed off for orders only but it can fit 2-3 individual. They are also extremely busy so it will take some time for your order to be ready but it is well worth it ,so I recommend calling ahead and make your order. One thing that disappoints me is that portions has become smaller and prices has increased. Where's the rest of my sandwich?? It had been years since I've had a delicious banh mi here and oh how it has changed... prices have almost doubled and the portions of meat are so small now. I got the #1 (ham and BBQ pork) for $5.50 and #3 (BBQ pork) for $6.50. The buns were toasted fresh and had a nice good crunch despite being a little burnt on the sides. I remember the BBQ pork being so delicious, but this time it was just a little over cooked and dry. The worst part was that it was hardly present in the sandwich... I was struggling to taste the meat in each bite. The ham was good and mixed well with the BBQ pork. I normally prefer the #3 BBQ pork alone, but #1 was the better choice for me with the sauce and better meat to bread ratio. read more

Thanh Da has always been my favorite viet bread spot. However, in the past year they raised their price by a whopping $1.50-$2 and have skimped out greatly on their ingredients. Oh boy has time changed. This used to be my go to spot for Viet sandwich and now, I rather go to Ba Xuyen at 42nd st in Brooklyn. I understand we are in a time of crisis and business is slow for most businesses and therefore price increase. Understandable but not acceptable for the degrade quality from before the pandemic. I got the #1 and he asked if I want spicy or not. I chose spicy. After you place the order, you have to wait outside for your order. How he tells you your order is ready is pretty wrong. He bangs on the window really hard to get your attention. I think that's stupid. First off, I didn't expect him to bang on the window so the elderly woman who was standing outside the store jumped and got scared. I felt so bad for her I even apologize on their behalf. I'm nice like that. They seriously need to think of a better way to notify customers their order is ready. Anyways, the filling was less than usual. Plus, it wasn't spicy at all. Ba Xuyen had more filling and they give me my spiciness! I gave one star for the bread, which wasn't hard as a rock. One star was just to give them for support during this time of crisis. But if they are going to raise the price, customer expects the same or even better quality. Why are you cheaping out your customer?! The filling is even less than Banh Mi Saigon in Chinatown. That is my usual spot for Viet sandwich when in the city but I figured I should give this place another try since I was craving Viet sandwich. This place was disappointing. Banh Mi Saigon is the same price, $7 for the #1 and they had more fillings. Shocking since Chinatown is more expensive in rent and both are the same price but different quality. Oh, where do I start? This hole-in-the-wall is hands down the best place for bahn mi. I've never eaten such delicious Vietnamese sandwiches elsewhere and for such an affordable price too ($5.5)! Are you convinced yet? If you are, go ahead and save their number because you bet there are always people waiting for their order so call ahead to place yours. The place can barely fit five people at once, so even though there's a bar table against the wall and three stools, you're better off eating it at Leif Ericsson park a couple of blocks down... unless you want to eat right next to the garbage can. What to get? I always go for the number one cause frankly it's the best option. Oh and they always ask you "la bu la" (mandarin for Spicy or not spicy) so make sure you're ready to answer that. I always say "xiao la" (a little spicy) just for that extra kick but if not it still tastes bombbb. Oh, they have a sister store down at 7th ave with lots of tables and more items on the menu like noodles if you're into that. For every 20 subpar Vietrnamese places in NYC, there is at least one Thanh Da. And thankfully for Brooklyn Chinatown, there are two. Thanh Da II is a banh mi only extension of it's more popular sister location (http://www.yelp.com/biz/thanh-da-brooklyn), but has my vote for one of the best Viet sandwich joints NY has to offer. With banh mi sandwiches, it's all about the bread. TDII toasts most of their fluffy baguettes before stuffing them with various meats and veggies. Most of the sandwiches I've had here are executived well and for $3.95 each, it's cheaper and of a higher caliber than most, if not all banh mi sammies found in Manhattan. The dac biet version of TDII's banh mi may be heartier and tastier than Ba Xuyen's (http://www.yelp.com/biz/ba-xuyen-brooklyn-2) and the nem nuong / xa xiu combos are always a delight. For those who fear the skimpage in the sandwich, politely ask for more of whatever and the sweet ladies behind the counter are likely to do it. Though not all of the sandwiches are ideal (namely the sardine and vegetable banh mi), they do a masterful job on everything else. I am aware there are folks who aren't big on the size of the sandwich or the place itself. Hole in the wall eateries are usually limited in seating as it is and this hood has more tiny joints than big banquet halls. TDII's toasty banh mi almost reminds me of Saigon Sandwich in SF (http://www.yelp.com/biz/saigon-sandwich-san-francisco), but with considerably less mayo and pate. I held off writing a review for the last couple of years in hopes of keeping this place under the radar.
