The entire night was filled with good bites only! To break it down: Seasonal Spritz: This was a sparkling wine with ginger, white peach, and citrus. So bright and refreshing! Honestly, my ideal spritz. Crudo: Highly recommend this starter! It featured thick cuts of yellowtail, watermelon, cucumber, ginger, thai chili, and thai basil. Really clean and fresh. I was surprised by the amount of fish we got! Local Catch: Another winner. This was roasted yellowtail with summer bean, tomato ragout, and Jimmy Nardello peppers. Absolutely no notes! Rigatoni: Our standout dish of the night! It featured summer squash, saffron butter squash blossoms, blistered tomatoes, and parmesan. I'm not usually a fan of cream based pastas, but this one blew me away. The veggies really brightened things up and I felt like I could eat plates and plates of this. If you get one thing, please let it be this! Since we mentioned in the res that we were celebrating, they brought out complementary champagne at the start of the meal. On top of that there is a small but varied and delicious menu of foods that goes from small snacks to more substantial pastas and fish. We tried the crisp, the rigatoni and the local catch. Little Victory is tucked into a small lot just around the corner from State Street and a lively part of Carlsbad Village. Parking can be an issue. I ended up about three blocks away in a residential area on a busy Saturday night. The cozy atmosphere is warm and comfortable. The staff does a good job weaving among the six tables in the dining room and six on the patio. Conversations are tougher inside. This is a natural wine bar, so some classiciists might not like the styles. Little Victory has a jammed, two-sided wine list (red and white) in incredibly small type. Natural wines often look and taste distinct from conventional bottles. They are frequently unfiltered and unfined, leaving them slightly cloudy with sediment. Expect vibrant acidity and complex flavor profiles that lean toward the earthy, savory. Bottle variation is common. Off-flavors and aromes include mousiness, excess volatile acidity (vinegar notes), or Brettanomyces (wet cardboard). Our waitress was patient and let us taste five whites, which were too funky for most of us (not fruit-driven noses and palates like most California wines). I settled on the Austrian 2024 Wurzinger Grüner Veltliner Früg, $17 BTG. It was cloudy, with some lime, floral, and yeasty nose; tight acids; and a tart finish. We did enjoy a fruity, balanced 2021 Viticultor Goyo Garcia Viadero Joven de Viejas Viñas, Ribera del Duero ($72 bottle; $25 at retail); and a good Temecula red blend, 2023 Lost Ranch Winery Moonshadow (53% Nero d'Avola; 47% Syrah; $17 by the glass). For appetizers, the four of us shared the olives ($8), bread and butter plate ($9), cheese platter ($18), and beef tartare ($25). Other things we shared were the local catch, $33; roasted octopus, $31; and the peach and fennel salad, $22. The octopus drew the most raves. The catch was a bit dry. Service was friendly, very helpful and responsive to our questions about the wines and the different dishes on the menu. The food runners were timely in bringing out our different dishes. The inside of the restaurant is so cute and is hidden away in a neighborhood. We had no reservations for a Saturday dinner, but was able to be seated immediately with a party of 5. We ordered a bottle of white wine and had some small eats. We loved how knowledgeable our server was and how attentive she was on making sure we had everything we needed while also not bombarding us the whole time with questions or concerns. The food was amazing as well as it wasn't serving big dishes but more tapa small plate style dishes as you sip on wine. I have been to Little Victory four times and it has never disappointed. This place has the best vibes for a date night or girls night out The wine is amazing. I don't remember what I got but I tried two different types of reds and they were absolutely delicious. The tuna crudo is really tasty and fresh. The flavor combination of the citrus and garlic is unique and addicting. I could have like 5 plates of this! The duck was cooked amazingly - maybe a little on the salty side but not enough for me to mind. The lentils and fennel were a fun combo to pair with the duck. Again, a unique dish that I thoroughly enjoyed. Lastly, we ended the night with a creamy basque cheesecake. This is one of the better cheesecakes I've had. A real MISS. I was so excited to try this new place but was surely disappointed. My husband and I waited over 10 minutes to place our first drink. We ordered a glass of wine which was good per their recommendation and then chose the cheese appetizer. But then we sat for about 30 minutes for someone to ask if we wanted anything else (more apps, another drink, dinner, etc). The service is where this place fails. Granted the staff is very friendly when that actually come to your table but obviously they lack in attentiveness and the menu is a whole other issue. The menu is unusual with limited poultry options. No red meat and the famous "basque cheesecake" is not the crème de la creme people talk about. Try Bourbon Steakhouse Dana Point for the real deal. My final complaint is regarding our "to-go" cheesecake order. They didn't have a to-go box so they said we'd have to eat some before it could fit in the box they had. What???!!! Again we waited for nearly 20 minutes when my husband asked about it and they said they forgot to put the order in!!!! Note: Be prompt, you will only be seated when your full party has arrived. This wine bar is a good size with about 6 small tables on the patio and 6 small tables on the inside. Knowing this, it is still great for groups because it is quaint and cozy. They have a standing location by the bar with bar stools in the corner seating around 6-7 people. I loved the service and plethora of wine selections. I had a Syrah from Mendocino, CA. It is a Red, light with a tart taste. Servers are knowledgeable on the wines which is amazing! Any time they have fish on the menu, order it as its probably one of the best preparations you'll try. Someday I'll get to try the elusive lasagna but it has managed to sell out from under me every time its been on the menu when I'm there. I hear its great though! My only note, and this isnt really a note for them to improve, just something to note - this is the kind of place where people order a bottle and linger. We had a lovely dinner here, solid food (4-5 stars), cozy atmosphere, no issues with service. We started with the roasted beets and Japanese sweet potatoes. The latter was exceptional with its interesting and craveanle spiced pistachio salsa verde. The crudo had a lovely fragrant passion fruit vinaigrette. Our main complaint was the under seasoning of the crudo and the beets. Both were made substantially better with a sprinkle of salt. For meetings, we started with the local catch (sea bass) and also wished the fish itself as well as the squash puree was just a bit more seasoned (fixed with also with some table salt). The duck a l'orange was beautiful and oh so tasty. The addition of a few endive leaves and especially the braised endive was fantastic. read more
