Very impatient, one of the worst doctors I have ever seen. The doctors like that should really not be allowed to work with people. A reminder to doctors like that: you treat people. People pay you salary. Make an effort to treat them with respect. Also, take five minutes to listen to the patient without belittling them and looking down at them. I went via sutter health only for this jerk to tell me that after my 3rd concussion within a year that he cannot see anything wrong with my ct or mri and that I should take rest and get on anxiety medication. Attitude was so high, I don't expect a soothsayer unlike others in a doctor, but he didn't bother to consider my symptoms where I'm losing balance and didn't even bring up how to manage my symptoms using balance therapy or checking my vesibular system or referring me to rehabilitation. I went to see Dr. Liu for migraine treatment (I already figured out it was migraine looking up on the internet). All that Dr. Liu did was ask a couple of questions and then with a wide grin tell me that I have migraines (as if I didnt know already). And then he wrote some medication but didnt want to listen to what I had to say. He didnt tell me anything about what I have to do (like dietary precautions, stay away from triggers). Whats worse, he didnt tell me that the abortive medications he was prescribing me were not to be taken everyday -- they cause rebound migraines. He hardly spent 5 mins with me in total! After I started taking his medication my condition started becoming worse by the day. One day I got fed up, stopped all medication, and started searching for other advise online. Luckily I found an excellent book which told me to immediately stop all that Dr. Liu had told me to do. And it actually worked!! read more

Dr. Chein is one of those doctors that the more you get to know him, the more thankful you are that he is on your team. When I first was introduced to him, he was exactly what I expected...a professional who did his job. But as time when on. I realized he was more then just a professional, he cared and was willing to fight for my best interests. Recently, he was willing to go outside of his wheelhouse to test a hypothesis. Symptoms didn't line up and, unlike 3 others in the field, he didnt ignore it. He worked with others cross departments to come up with a proposed plan. Instead of just doing the status quo, he pushed for what he he thought was in my best interest. As he worked on the plan, he made sure to cover the basics and altered my medication to minimize side effects. Because I now know what I have with Dr Liu, I will follow him wherever he goes. Dr. Liu is simply the best in a long progression of general practitioners & neurologists that have attempted to treat my migraines. All previous doctors have placed me on meds that have had minor impact on the pain left me with debilitating, multi-day headaches. Dr. Liu took the time to explore my history and find a treatment and med level that works for me. After having been in the good care of my lady neurologist in D.C. the past many years, I am so grateful to have found Dr. Liu after moving here, whom I cannot recommend highly enough. My visit with him was such a relief after having encountered one condescending, arrogant doctor at Stanford who was a real disgrace and put his own beliefs before the care of his patients. Dr Liu in comparison had the utmost courtesy, was extremely knowledgable, and most importantly, really compassionate. This is what I personally needed the most after having nearly died the last few years and having undergone immense trauma. Dr. Liu listened with respect, warmth and true compassion. His exam was as thorough and professional as that of my former Assist. Professor in D.C., he took generous time, never once made me feel rushed, rather really made me feel welcome, heard and in good hands, a doctor I can trust and rely on as a patient. My husband had accompanied me (as I need help with some things like driving as a neurological patient) and our visit with Dr. Li was truly pleasant, he met us as equal fellow human beings and was approachable and utterly goodhearted. I most confess that I usually dislike hospitals and doctor's offices quite a bit as had to see too many in my life already but came out uplifted, reassured and confident in further healing, which is so, so important as one feels vulnerable enough as a patient already and especially in a new state. Coming from Germany originally, Dr. Liu reminded me of our family doctor, the quality of care was the same--equally showing up, being truly present with a heart of gold and genuinely caring about his patients. One can easily see how right Dr. Liu is in his chosen profession, displaying true excellence in every way--I am glad to be in his care and intend to stay his patient. I have never once written a review on a doctor before, not even on the terrible one at Stanford, but feel compelled to do so for the very first time. Worst Doctor experience in many years. I am extremely disappointed with the service this doctor provided. I visited him for a general headache consultation. He spent about 10 minutes with me, 5 minute of that talking about AI at Facebook and Google and if robots can eventually replace humans. The next 5 minutes was just going over herbs and medicines (basically information available online). There was nothing personalized, and nothing really helpful. And finally, I received a bill of $478 for this very poor and disappointing service. I am extremely disappointed about their service, and will never continue with him and Sutter. read more

Dr. Liu is one of the worst doctors I have ever seen. He has a terrible bedside manner, is argumentative, impatient, and makes you feel like you're bothering him. He doesn't really even ask enough questions to understand your condition, and when you offer more info he belittles you for bringing such info up. I cannot believe doctors like him can continue to be employed - it's not surprising to me that 75% of the reviews already here are 1 star. Here's an example of how terrible my experience was. I had an urgent referral for an appointment, and showed up at the time I made the appointment with his office. They said "sorry, your appointment is a month from now." Why? Because without seeing me or hearing anything about my condition, he decided it wasn't anything urgent. Find someone else - and save another headache in the process! read more

Dr. Liu was amazing - after having been in the care of another neurologist for my post-concussion symptoms for months with little progress, I saw Dr. Liu for a second opinion. He paid close attention to what I was going through and why, then reassured me I would make a full recovery. And even though time would heal it, he would do his best to make the healing process as comfortable and expeditious as possible. He put me on a medication that, within weeks, had increased my quality of life substantially and decreased my symptoms by 50%. Looking at the 7 reviews for Dr. Liu, I felt the need to present a more balanced, thought-out point of view. If you are looking for a touchy feelie kind of doctor, he may not be for you. Dr. Liu is a no-nonsense type, who doesn't waste your time, or allow you to waste his. This takes some getting used to and can be misinterpreted as gruffness by someone expecting to be pampered. He quickly made me realize that for nervous system problems (what a neurologist does) where the pain is, has little bearing on the cause of the problem. He is an "acquired taste." I have been seeing him for about six months and my respect for him has increased steadily over time. He is a competent diagnostician; in my case he has found a fairly rare condition in a relatively short time, and started a treatment which is slowly but surely producing results. I would recommend Dr. Liu for anyone who has a nervous system problem (not just back and neck pain), who doesn't need excessive handholding, or who is not naive enough to believe that one visit can result in effective treatment for migraines. read more

Dr. Liu showed his impatience even the it was the first time I saw him! He didn't show interested at all with my problem. Also, during the whole consultancy period, he didn't even smile...which made me felt so stressful!! I have been seeing Dr. Liu since July 2007 for persistant and 'almost' disabling migraines. He asked the basic questions that other Neurologist and Doctors have asked me in the past. He came across to me as quiet and professional. After seeing him for migraines that would hit me every 2 or 3 days and a couple of years various medications, Dr. Liu has finally found the right 'mix' of medications that have brought me back to functioning, maybe 2 or 3 migraines a month. Miracles don't always happen over night. lMaybe the other 2 reviewers were hoping for a instant quick fix. I've gotten to know him and his personality has come out. I like this Doctor, he has also worked with a couple of other Doctors on my behalf to try to get me extra help I needed. What showed me that he cared is of lately the good progress I'm making, He is genuinely happy for me. I'm a Fan. Be patient, give a Doctor at least 3 chances before giving him the trap door, Ask questions, about what any Doctors giving you, don't just stick things in your mouth. All the years, all the people I've seen go in & out of the office, I never saw or heard of anyone unhappy. 5 stars when Dr. Liu gets me down to terminating migraines 'before' they start. read more

I have some health related training and approach medical care very critically and skeptically. Due to some of the previous reviews of Dr. Liu, I was prepared for a fight to get my concerns heard. I came armed with research articles and a rehearsed argument just in case I needed to support my case. However, I found Dr. Liu to be very responsive. I made sure to clearly state my concerns and what we were looking for from the outset, but I thought Dr. Liu made it really easy to do so. He took time to answer all questions, make sure we didn't have any more, validated us for coming in, and explained things both in laymen's terms and more technically (which I like). Reviews for Dr. Liu are unusual in that, up to now, they're either 5-stars or 1-star. After my son visited Dr. Liu, though, I think I may know why. He seems a doctor who understands certain disease situations very well. But when symptoms don't present a disease pattern with which he's familiar, he isn't interested in figuring out what may be going on. It's either 'yes' he knows what's going on or 'no'. Also, though he did take plenty of time to talk and answer questions, he either didn't understand one question or decided he didn't like something about the question .. and he refused to say how long one should follow a pain-medication strategy that he recommended. It turns out - after having to look it up online since he didn't answer the question - that the strategy should not be followed for more than a few days. But if we hadn't double checked, over-medicating from taking medication too long might have been the result. Maybe it's a culture thing - not answering a direct question if one doesn't like the question - but the result can be dangerous. read more

Absolutely the worst doctor I have seen in my entire life. As I sat in his office, it was as though I wasn't there. He made unilateral decisions without first getting a complete history, second asking anything about my personal feelings, fears, medical history, etc. As a intelligent person, I would expect there to be dialog between my doctor and myself on how to proceed with my care, but there wasn't. He seems very insecure about my consulting the National Institute of Health online. He said that I should only consult physicians with experience - i.e. - him. I think the NIH has several physicians who are writing and overseeing their website. I was trying to educate myself about my illness so that I could come into the doctor ready to discuss my illness and decide what was the best course of medicine for me, but he just wanted to throw prescriptions at me with no regard to the current medications I was on. Stay very far away from him - really, he can spout out lots of information about prescriptions, seems to have lots of book knowledge, but absolutely no acceptable "bedside" manner. In fact he told me that he saw so many patients a day, some with dementia, some dying, etc and he couldn't have any empathy for them because he had to stay on an even keel so it didn't affect his emotional well being! I wouldn't normally write such a personal review, but I found Dr. Liu on Yelp and almost didn't go to him even though it was two weeks earlier than any other appointment I could get with Neurologist. It's a long story, but I had been experiencing some pretty scary symptoms including losing my hearing, numbness, weakness, eye pain etc (could be anything)...so my ENT had referred me to an Neurologist. I was terrified to have a Neurologist read my MRI...and this was the first Doctor I could get an appointment with. I was skeptical because of the reviews on here, but, boy am I glad I didn't let them influence me. I thought Dr Liu was wonderful. My wait time was a little long, (he didn't come into the room until about 40 minutes after my scheduled appointment) but it soon became clear why. He was so attentive, thoughtful, and patient with me. He went through my entire family history, looked at my MRI, listened to all of my questions and answered everything very thoroughly. He spent well over an hour with me, and he never made me feel like he had anything more important to be doing. I had so many questions, and he welcomed them all. I guess I don't want to go into any of the personal details, but I feel very confident in his diagnosis and treatment plan, and he even noticed some additional health concerns, and instead of just referring me to another Doctor he spent time explaining why they are concerns, and even offered to help treat them until I can get to another specialist and regular doctor. I was completely impressed, and in my opinion this is exactly the kind of Doctor you want in your corner. read more
