Most of the professors here aren't qualified to teach & are extremely unhelpful & sometimes rude. The Bursar & Fin. Aid office are the worst b/c nobody wants to do their job & they will have you running in circles trying to find answers for anything, I have had so many issues w/ both departments & had to harass them just to get solutions. The dorms are dirty & are never redone & maintenance never comes to fix anything. If I could write a book about how bad this school is I would. Pro's: -Large, quiet campus.. 2nd largest on Long Island, 2nd only to Stony Brook in acres. -4 day school weeks. They only have classes Mon-Thurs, though a handful of Science majors will have lab on Fridays. -For the most part, understanding and hard working faculty, who do try to provide a good and competent college experience. -The past 2 years, the school has been renovating its academic buildings and facilities. -The campus is located a short 5 minute drive from restaurants and convenience stores in nearby Hicksville. Cons: -A handful of professors who make college absolutely miserable for their students.. (from personal experience) -As one reviewer put it nicely, f**king Nazi campus police who write tickets to the drivers who try to obey the speed limits and let the road ragers go. -Awful shuttle bus service who almost never follows the normal bus schedules. -Come nighttime, lots of wildlife in the area..deer, rabid raccoons, possums, skunks, snakes, etc.. -The dorms are poorly maintained, and many times, in the middle of the night, some random inebriated (OOH SNAP, BIG WORD) idiot will pull the fire alarm, prompting everyone to evacuate and campus police to come, physically check all the rooms and then let everyone back inside. This happens AT LEAST 1-2x a week. Simply put, this is a "commuter" school. 75% of their students do not dorm. From Friday to Sunday, this place is a ghost town. The college has an excellent Education program, as well as, competitive Psychology, Criminology, and Accounting programs. Enrolled with Empire State College and Paid in Full for a course…read more The so called "Learning Contract" that was sent to me, was written with multiple flaws. I advised that the document would be corrected and returned for approval before I would "SIGN" the contract. The next correspondence received was notification that the time restraints had expired and the course requirements had not been completed. Several attempts to correct the situation fell on deaf ears. Even an attempt to file a complaint through small claims court was to no avail. The Lawyer that represented EMPIRE STATE College advised the court that since ESC was a STATE Institution, the court had no jurisdiction. CASE DISMISSED! Nothing like paying for Bad / Corrupt Government. Luckily CW Post had a similar course. Don't waste you time or money with Empire State College. Just like the State's Politicians, The College's arrogance is astonishing. This is only one of many reasons New York is truly in a Death Spiral.

Well not at Empire State University! The whole angle of this State run college is to promote the whole "go back and get your degree" for those who want a degree we never got or were too lazy to finish college the first time around. There is pretty much no set structure, no curriculum, no classes and no real learning- not too shabby I guess for a certain segment of the population but the reason I went there was to get something out of it. A "class" works something like this: you meet your mentor, that is, you meet after 200 attempts to find a convenient time for said mentor to make themselves available. Then you discuss what degree you want to finish / accomplish. Your very first assignment, and you get credit for this, is to fill out a whole pile of paperwork documenting your life, schools attended, work experience etc. You have no choice, you have to do this and waste a so-called semester. This basically lets you scam your way out of taking more credits. The bonus here is if you can B.S. your way through a subject - you get credit! Doesn't have to be in the actual field you are taking, just any ole subject you happen to know. Basket weaving something you know about? Credit! How to cut and hang drywall? Credit! Fix those pesky weeds on your lawn? Credit! Closet voyeur with a neighbor fetish? Credit! Then apparently some "expert" reviews your essay and grants you credits... Next: since there are no classes and no courses, you and the "mentor" decide what you want to study next - it can be anything of course - so long as it can be remotely applied to the overall degree, you can go get a book, write a report and get more credits. You are given a set amount of time to finish- I think 12 weeks. So, 12 weeks later and you spent 11 of them at the local watering hole? Call the mentor and get 12 more weeks! Huzzah! What a waste of money- you can theoretically get your degree which of course is a great thing, but really, will you be prepared to get out there and get a job in that field and be effective? Unlikely. The whole thing is poorly run in my opinion.

I wish i had a pool when i was a student. Tilles Center is still one of the premier concert and performing arts venues on Long Island and has seen big name acts perform there. The students historically tend to be upper middle class and they have a history of being quite stuffy, but all in all, i had no issues making friends here and enjoying my time. enough as it is, to continue to show up during Football season and walk around. The campus is beautiful, clean and has a great feeling to it one that excites you to learn and grow as an individual. This is a large university with so many majors, clubs/greek life and it located on Long Island and just a train ride from New York City. I think it's an amazing school and Overall it's been such a great experience!
