Writing as a parent/tuition-payer. COSTS & TUITION: Bait and switch: son admitted with 50% academic scholarship; as inflation drove up over all tuition, scholarship stayed flat. So my out -ot-pocket increased at twice the rate of inflation. And the billing office shafts me with outrageous room charges (like $250 for not putting a bunkbed back together from habing made it two single beds, and then charging a could hundred in late charges on top of that fine. CAREER: basically there is no worthwhile counseling system that helps the kids plan for what's next. Fine if you know what you want, not fine that no one tells you that to get into a certain professional or grad school from Fordham you need this major and these grades, based upon the experiences of recent grads. ACADEMICS: I had thought the notion that contemporary universities disallowed contentious idea was absurd. WOW, was I wrong. So basically as a student you'd better keep your thoughts to yourself unless they are lock step with the latest transectional ideology. I took a walk around and admired the historical buildings (some dating to 1841), the beautifully cut green lawns, the stunning church exterior, the spacious sports fields, the elegant walkways, the gorgeous trees. It's a beautiful setting, carefully and meticulously facilitated for its students... and it better be, considering how much they pay to get in. Worth a couple of hours of your time. At the gate, mention you have a relative who is thinking about enrolling, and you just want to check out the campus for him/her, or the guard won't let you in. read more

Today I was able to attend a tour and information session for the Fordham Rose Hill campus. Surprisingly for the middle of July the campus was pretty active. It was a rain or shine event, therefore we were provided with lovely Fordham Ponchos. I most say the campus is beautiful and well maintained. It definitely adds a historical presence to the big apple and of course the boogie down Bronx. Strategically located next to the Bronx Zoo and The New York Botanical Garden. During the tour, I was able to learn about the many academic programs on campus and abroad, Dorm life and off campus activities. Our tour guide was an uprising Junior at the University. She was very personable and informative. She was able to answer all questions with ease while giving real life examples and scenarios. It's imperative for students to visit a college campus at least twice before making a final decision. If accepted plenty of scholarship opportunities exist. Go Rams! read more

Fordham is an amazing school. I fell in love with the campus when I visited it while looking at prospective graduate schools. I'd already gotten in when I visited, so it was kind of a done deal once I experienced the campus firsthand. I can't speak from an undergrad experience since I went to undergrad on the west coast, but I've found Fordham to be a generally friendly place, and all of my professors have been extremely kind and considerate of the students. They push you, most definitely, and I've heard this is not specific just to the realm of graduate programs. Again, I'm sure the undergrad dynamic is totally different, but the graduate students here are overall friendly and unpretentious, which is maybe what I've loved more than anything else. I came from the Pacific Northwest and went to college with a large population of ostentatious hyper-intellectuals with superiority complexes, which was definitely a detractor in classroom settings. At Fordham, everyone is pretty much on equal ground, and there is a lot of emphasis on group interpretation and dialogue to come to collective answers. The emphasis on collectivity and collaboration is strong, and there is a surprisingly democratic feel to the way my classes have gone. As far as location, we're in New York City, perhaps the greatest metropolis in the world, so the connection to world class institutions, companies, etc. is unmatched. The two campuses are different; Lincoln Center basically consists of a couple of city buildings on the upper west side, but there is a nice plaza there that's open to the public. Rose Hill is the original campus, and is without a doubt the most gorgeous campus I've ever stepped foot on in my life. It's Gothic, adorned with Catholic statues, sprawling lawns, trees, gardens, and every building basically looks like a castle. Comparisons to Hogwarts are definitely warranted. Did I mention the NY Botanical Garden and Bronx Zoo are in your backyard? Yeah, yeah, Rose Hill (the main campus) is in the Bronx, but I really want to emphasize something here. I read on a college forum when I was initially researching the school that some woman had said her son was "so scared" of the area around Fordham that he wouldn't even get out of the car to visit the school, which might be the most disgusting and absurd thing I've ever heard in my life. I have walked around the area late at night and never felt even remotely perturbed by anyone or anything; if you're an undergrad living on campus, it's even less of an issue--the only thing you have to worry about is one of your upper class peers on campus becoming unhinged. The security at the campus is strong, and the entire place is walled in like Fort Knox. I suppose if you've never left your mommy and daddy's sprawling upstate mansion or your Connecticut boarding school, then yeah, the Bronx is going to be serious culture shock, but I'd like to dispel the notion that there is gang violence and murders and assaults happening on every corner here--there isn't. I am from Portland, Ore. and I can honestly say that I've witnessed crazier/more dangerous situations there on a regular basis than I have in the Bronx. In Portland, I've had loony drug addicts threatening to stab/shoot me to death in front of a convenience store, and seen crazy people dump containers of Chinese food on innocent seniors while riding the train. In the Bronx? Not even. If you have an ounce of street smarts and pay attention to your surroundings, you will be fine. The idea that the Fordham kids have something to worry about walking around the neighborhood is a myth perpetuated by clueless white plutocrats, and it's absolute BS. At 3am? Maybe not the best time to be walking around drunk, but that goes for any big city in the WORLD. If you can't handle the Bronx, you can't handle Fordham. read more

A great school if you're looking to be near New York City, yet not in an urban setting. The faculty is one of the best parts of the school... I had so many caring, attentive professors. Class sizes are relatively small and get even smaller when you get into your major. Although it's a religious school, they don't force religion down your throat, and you'll find a good mix of students from all different religious and ethnic backgrounds. The neighborhood is relatively good, providing you use your common sense - like not walking alone after dark. You've got the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden, Little Italy, and Fordham Road, so you have other worlds right at your fingertips. It's easy to get to New York City from Fordham; you can take the subway, Metro-North, or Fordham's inter-campus transportation. The dorms, except for O'Hare, leave much to be desired, as does the campus food. Great library and a good amount of activities for you to join. I did grad school at the Lincoln Center campus as a commuter student. I must say that the Rosedale campus is beautiful. It sits on about 20 acres of lush green grass and has a mixture of old and modern construction. This section of the Bronx has gone through various incarnations. Fordham Road is a very congested urban area. Plenty of pedestrians, and even more cars. The university sits across the street from two New York landmarks, the Bronx Zoo, and the Bronx Botanical Gardens. read more

Fordham University - Rose Hill Campus - The Bronx. Beautiful campus, awesome facilities and filled with abundant student life - I'm a fan. Downside? The Bronx is a shithole (as far as I can tell) and the tall fence surrounding the campus and security guards at every entrance is a downer. Maybe I'm soft, but I was not impressed with the surrounding area and I'm not interested in sending my kid to a campus that feels like a inside-out prison...lock the criminals out instead of in. Nonetheless, it's a great school and I don't want to be an a-hole or too judgmental... 4 stars - Fordham is a top-rate school. read more

It's my alma mater--I love this school. A Jesuit university dating back to 1841, with a history of Edgar Allen Poe incorporating the school's bells in his poem "The Bells". Great history. It's also close to the Bronx Zoo, Botanical Gardens & great restaurants on Arthur Avenue. read more

I had a great four years in the Bronx. Beautiful campus, half an hour subway ride from the city with the best Italian food in the five boroughs right down the street. I lived in the former project known as Walsh in a three bedroom apartment for two years - which was great for an undergrad - and had the best views of any apartment I will probably EVER inhabit. Theres a fun college bar scene, great restaurants and a really awesome faculty right on the outskirts of New York City. read more

My rating is only for the aesthetics of the campus, I have no idea how the experience at Fordham is like as a university. Compared to NYU, I really like how this is an enclosed and spacious campus. The buildings are beautiful and the campus is neatly kept. It's right next to Fordham Center (or Plaza) where there are plenty of stores and restaurants. I always felt like Columbia University was the only quality university that could give that campus feel in NYC. When I was in high school I did go on a tour to see their Manhattan campus and was not thoroughly impressed so I wished I made the trek up here first instead! And for the sheltered whities who are afraid of the surrounding neighborhood. I'm from Brooklyn and Fordham Plaza looks like a normal and lively neighborhood! This automatic conditioning of black/brown faces and communities as dangerous is so racist and classist. Why do people still have a 70s perception of the Bronx when NYC has gentrified so much over the last dacade. Suburban whitie out-of-towners don't realize how great NYC is in terms of safety, convenience and diversity. I went to a university in Central NY and the town barely had anything with higher rates of crime. read more

Finally got a chance to visit my old stomping grounds. My schedule for my visit to NY was tight but I had to go see my alma mater again and see how things have changed in the Rose Hill campus since my student years which I fondly remember. (I will leave the discussions of the academic atmosphere to the current crop of students and newly-graduated alumni, as seen in the other reviews). The campus is still as scenic and well-maintained as I remember, but with several impressive new buildings including a large parking garage, a magnificent new library and additional student residential buildings, all designed to be in harmony with the campus gothic theme of the architecture of the older buildings. Many improvements have also been made to the older buildings. The dining facility in McGinley Hall has been expanded, as have the sports and recreational facilities associated with the Lombardi Center. This campus is truly a beautiful academic and social oasis in the middle of the borough of the Bronx. read more

The Rose Hill Campus is absolutely beautiful! I love this campus. Make sure you sign up for parking if your a student, in advance. The staff is friendly. The campus is so pretty and peaceful. The grass is so green in the summer :-) Even in the winter this place is beautiful!! Beware of the nats when it gets warmer, they are all over the place and visible!! If you intend on going here, you'll love it! Plus, it is near the Bronx Zoo and the Botanical Gardens and the Fordham Shopping District, where everything is relatively cheap. read more

always a fan of the big apple and when it comes to New York colleges this one is a beauty. My sister goes here and i got the privilege of getting to visit her during family weekend and have only been to the Bronx a few times. the college is located right next to the train station that is a short ride away from grand central station which takes you right to Manhattan. and if you know anything about New York Manhattan is huge and going to Fordham offers a great opportunity to take a 10 minute train ride to the heart of the city doesn't get much better than that. the grounds are absolutely gorgeous and especially fun to walk around during the fall time. I wonder what the campus looks like during the winter. there is even a catholic church right on campus I love that. The dorms are nice and the campus is right in the heart of the Bronx which features the scene for the musical A Bronx Tale. read more

Loved this school. I have the fondest memories of my four years at Rose Hill. First, I met really great people here. Sure there are some douchebags, but most of the people were very down to earth. The bar scene is sketch, but I met really cool people out there. The campus is located about 15 min from Midtown via Metro North, and 30-40 min by subway. Rose Hill's close proximity to the city makes it a lot easier to find a job. I was able to pad my resume with internships at big name employers because the school is in NYC. The school also gives out a lot of Financial Aid/Scholarships. I left Fordham with little debt. More importantly (depending on your priorities), the education was really top notch. Some of my best professors were at Rose Hill (Berg, Greenfield, Lawrence, and Crane were the best). The higher quality professors are generally at Rose Hill, which is the main campus. The professors are tough, but if you listen to their advice, they will teach you how to write and think critically. Berg, for example, taught me how to read a case, which definitely prepared me for law school. Simply put, Fordham is a great school. It's worth the money and ultimately, the quality of your experience depends on whether you try hard and are willing to listen. read more

As an alumni of this great university I want to personally thank all the professors who challenged me morally, and academically. I loved every moment on campus from hanging out on the Harlem River (Fordham's Crew Team); to exploring eating Arthur Ave. But what I truly miss most is the class lecture from Father D. He truly made my experience at Fordham, and he was just a great person overall. I will never forget Fordham and everything the school has done for me. The hardships I endured made me who I am today. As a veteran who served in the Marine Corps I would reminisce about my time at Fordham while I was overseas. I used what I learned at Fordham to make a small difference to people all over the world. We all make a difference to someone, and my professors made a difference in me. My children will one day graduate from this outstanding university. I am forever proud to be a RAM! Yay Fordham! I love this school. Best four years of my life (so far). Obvious perks: beautiful campus with grassy knolls and collegiate-looking buildings in the middle of the Bronx, close enough to Manhattan, but far enough away so that campus life is vibrant. Less obvious perks: great faculty (as long as you do a little research on ratemyprofessor to avoid the bombs), small classes (very few huge lecture-type classes here), and, most importantly, great people. There is very little pretension here: no NYU condescending hipster bullshit, but no Columbia holier-and-smarter-than-thou stuff either. Yes, there are exceptions, but everyone that I knew and hung out with was funny, cool, laid-back, and fun. I really do believe that there is a spot for everyone at Fordham- if you want to do your own thing, that's cool, and if you want to be a part of the campus, even better. LOVE IT. They have a habit of staffing their classes with graduate students who can barely speak English, and are never in their offices when you need to ask them something. I'm sorry, but when I'm paying $20,000+ per year for an education, I expect to be taught by a real professor! I graduated from the Graduate School of Education and that program has been okay. However, dealing with the Bursar and Student Accounts is a nightmare. The bursar Stefano Terzulli and his staff are the most incompetent bunch of fools I have ever dealt with in my life. I won an award from Americorps and I have been hounding Fordham for the last 3 weeks to send me the money that is due to me. First they sent it to the wrong address, then they promised to re-send it, and as of today I still don't have it. They put you on hold for hours at a time, one person does not know what the other is doing, and Bursar Terzulli does not return phone calls or emails -- he lets his assistants/minions who are incompetent take care of your financial matters. I have wasted so many hours dealing with these people, that this unpleasantness, honestly, has taken away from the experience of a pretty decent education there. Terzulli and his staff should be fired. read more
