Showed them my veterans' card and she told me to pound sound. Was able to do this at this location a couple of weeks ago. She said if you want to pay Ten dollars I could go in and use the bathroom. And if i went in without paying she would have the ranger write me a ticket. She was doing all the talking and I was never rude to her. Just shows you the younger generation does not know the freedoms they have were fought for by the veterans. I am also a senior citizen. I am 63 years old. This isn't a destination by any means but if your in the area its worth going ten minutes out of the way to see. Things looked to be in OK condition. It wasn't manicured like a Japanese tea garden but it didn't have trash everywhere either. It's perfect for taking your dog for a walk - and functionally I think that is one of the most important things to be happy in a neighborhood. I like something green and something that isn't concrete. I also am a sucker for something that is obviously man made - and realize that some are high nosed to that sort of thing.

Being at Ellis Lake now in 2023 will just give the feeling of sadness and beyond belief of what is happening. Ellis Lake definitely has potential, but not anymore with how it is being left unmaintained. First off. Pollution: Runoff from fertilizers, contaminated soil and other products has polluted the lake from human and bird feces, poop, pee, drugs, needles, etc... just floating around on the lake. YUCK!!!! Lots off overgrown vegetation beyond the eyes can see. Too many algae blooms. The lake is just beyond nasty and stinky! I highly advise just doing a drive by, but not going for a stroll around Ellis lake if you do want to visit. Either wise, this place isn't worth it to bring your out of state family/friends to visit Marysville. Rather divert going to Folsom Lake. It's that embarrassing for what the city of Marysville has gone to in a not so positive direction. Shame. Shame. Shame. SMH! Okayyyy... bye.

As soon as we got out of the car to load up ice chests and our belongings a sheriff pulled up and started to write tickets out to everyone parked in the loading area. I get that it was not a parking spot, but the car was running and we had already packed everything we just had to load it. He had zero care for the fact all of the kids started crying because he scared them (all kids 1-10 years old) and then ended screaming at the parents saying "you have 5 minutes to leave!" We cut our day short because at the end of it. And it did create an overall HOSTILE environment for The children, and party goers. However, it is a beautiful place to take the family, water is a bit cold but not too bad. Overall I will probably never go here again with my children. Not if human decency is a foreign concept.

Good, but far too expensive for peddle boats! All other boats there are $25 and under, but the…read morepeddles are $35, and they said they barely rent any. Maybe because they are the most expensive! They're the only boats id ever rent, as the uv rays during the only time of year they are open are absolutely unbearable and vile. Both our butte and lower backs were all screwed up after though, due to not having any padding. The life vests are so thick, you can't peddle with them on, and your upper thighs push into the bottom, shoving the vests into your ears. It is tremendously uncomfortable, and we had to take our vests off and use them as padding instead.

We went in March when the weather was unusually warm this year and the water was f l o w i n g. There isnt much tree cover as there used to be after the fires in this area, so if you're coming on a sunny day, be well prepared with sun protection and water. The majority of the hike is uncovered if you start after the morning hours. Parking lot is decent sized, on the day we came there were hardly any cars at 9am, but we saw more people when we finished around 1pm. There's also vault toilets at the trailhead

You need to keep going down the freeway passed Coal Canyon Road We parked in a large rocky parking lot. At this point, you need to use the bathrooms because there aren't any along your path or trail. I found it hard to stay hydrated because since there aren't bathrooms along the way. I didn't want to drink too much water in case it makes me have to go. We started our hike at 1:15pm. The first part of the hike is a very rocky dirt path. No shade. So wear your sun screen! It was beautiful along the way with beautiful green grass, gorgeous flowers. There were free range cows roaming around. This hike can be very challenging to someone who doesn't work out or get their heart rate up daily. There were a couple large Oaks trees offering us some shade just before you approach the quarry. It's a good resting point but we kept on. For this part, we were climbing down into a quarry, surrounded by trees and bushes, over the rocks, down the path, going back and forth... to come to the first waterfall. It was refreshing and rewarding! Being able to feel the water coming down over you after hiking down from the sun was exhilarating! Now, you have to climb your way up the other side. This is where a big challenge comes in. Up the other side, walking up a very vertical hill, over the rocks... really takes your breath away and makes your legs burn.. we loved every minute of it. When you get to the top, there are no trees up here, just more hills to walk up with rocks below your feet. So wear some good shoes! Getting to the top of that part was another waterfall. It was only visible from far away, but even more gorgeous! The sun was hitting it just right to make a rainbow in the mist. It took us 2 1/2-3 hours to get to that particular part of the hike (we spent quite a bit of time at the previous waterfall). At this point we decided to go back... but you need to go back the way you came. We were pretty out of shape for this hike but we love challenges. So up and back over the hills, back down the steep quarry full of trees, down the rocky path, back to the first waterfall (and we spent time down there again, lol) and then climbing out of that quarry, we decided to stop at those big oak trees to make a sandwich to share. After our long rest, getting some fuel in our bodies, and getting nice and hydrated, we started out way down the rocky path. Again, the rocky path made it very challenging. Our legs were really worked from all the climbing up the hills we did so we've smaller hill after that made us feel the burn! Oh... there nothing like the motivation of seeing that parking lot, lol. It was indeed time to get into the air conditioned car and into a comfy seat in the car. Oooh and finally!!! Bathrooms!!! Lol My daughter & I had a blast on our hike for Easter. There were so many families that day who had the same idea. The weather was perfectly sunny with a slight breeze. It was 6 p.m. by the time we sat in the car and turned on the air conditioning. Great timing since I didn't have to drive in the dark on our way home!

Over time, I've met some friendly faces and joined in on activities. For instance, one day I was there hiking with a buddy, and we met an awesome couple who were playing chess outside their van. We ended up staying for hours, mingling and playing games! Anyway, I love showing off this place to folks who are visiting. One thing I noticed not so long ago is that if you type the place into your GPS, it may take you somewhere else. Make sure to type in "Hoyt Trail Parking," and it will direct you to the bridge and trail. There's also a nearby trail called "Independence Trail" that's walkable from the parking area.

Worth the three hour drive for a day trip. I wasn't sure on what to expect specially since I've…read morenever had a reason to go to Yuba County BUT I'm so glad we found the New Bullards Bar Reservoir, which is where the Dark Day Camp Ground is located. Great for swimming, boating, and camping. If you are going for day use, get there early preferably before noon. Parking is limited. The area where we parked only had space for less than 20 cars and that's parking creatively to fit all 20. Bring a portable grill because there are plenty of picnic tables but limited number of grills and they are not always near the tables or clean. I hate sharing food with bugs so we placed our canopy with a mesh screen over one of the picnic tables where we had our food. The spot we were at had some, maybe around 5-10 that I could see, unwanted winged visitors but it was tolerable. The drive was not bad. There are areas where the road is winding but not too steep. Not a lot of oncoming traffic and there were also few cars heading the same direction as us. We went on a Saturday and once we passed Sacramento traffic to Yuba County was light. I would have given this place 5 stars if the grills were more accessible and the toilet area did not smell like a toilet area.
