Unforgiving, join a gym where if you're 5 mins late you can still do something…read more I had been attending classes for a few months and having generally a positive experience. One time for reasons beyond my control at work I arrived a few minutes late, they sent me through to get changed. Once I had changed they told me I was more than 5 mins late and couldn't join the class. If you're going to do this why send me through, I literally changed in less than 2 minutes?!? I essentially decided not to do business with them anymore at this point and just join a gym that offers free classes - roughly the same cost and if I'm late it's not the end of the world and I have no where to go. To add insult to injury on this, they essentially told me their cancellation policy would mean I have to pay for another month of classes I had no intent on using after this experience. They made no exception and charged me for the full month even though I didn't come. Clearly care about their margins rather than any customer experience. Strongly suggest to avoid these money grabbing folks whose rules suit them, not you. Just join a good gym with classes.

I've been to several OTF studios in the South Bay and Peninsula area so this review is a comparison…read moreto other OTF studios now that I've visited Palo Alto a few times during weekdays and weekends, morning and afternoon. The layout for the Palo Alto is a bit odd because the space is long and skinny. So in order to fit in all the rowers and treadmills and weight floor stations, they have a long aisle with the rowers and treadmills in parallel and then a whole separate square for the weight stations in the back, kind of in the shape of a capital L with a fat square for the bottom of the L. This makes for some awkward coaching because the coach's main station is at the angle and the coach can only pay attention and see one side of of the room at a time and kind of a has to move back and forth. Also, as a member, it can be really hard to see the class board with the real time stats when you are on the weight floor or on the very end of the L on a rower or tread. Another thing I'm not a fan of is how echoey the room seems to be. Sometimes it can be hard to understand the coach because the instructions and the music seem to reverberate. Generally speaking, the SAs seem to be friendly and nice, but I've found that the instructors at OTF Palo Alto don't seem to be as energetic or enthusiastic, and they don't coach with as much detail about the exercises as instructors from other studios I've attended. And for whatever reason (maybe because the demos are shorter?), the classes always seem to be shorter than other studio classes, even when they are a repeat of a workout I've already done before. I also don't love that their lockers and cubby spaces for members to store their keys and gear during the workout are extremely small, not big enough to fit a backpack into. I sometimes come from work and have to bring my laptop into the studio rather than leaving it in my car where it may be broken into and stolen, so it's annoying that I can only fit my backpack into a cubby where it is sticking out half way. This wouldn't be such an issue except like I mentioned above, this studio is long and skinny, and this also applies to the waiting area outside the workout space proper. Everything feels a bit cramped. I stop by here when the location is convenient, but it's not my go-to for the reasons I've listed above.

After moving to NorCal, I was on the hunt for a gym that wasn't just another crowded space with…read morerandom workouts--and I finally found it at Functional Lifestyles Palo Alto. From day one, I felt at home. Francisco did my assessment and set the tone with a thoughtful, personalized approach. Corey, the owner, is so down-to-earth and even jumps in on classes. I've also trained with Jamie, Billy, and Damian, and every single coach brings both expertise and energy. They actually watch your form, coach you through adjustments, and push you in the right ways. What sets FL apart is their model: semi-private sessions (10 clients, 2 coaches), which means you get personalized attention without losing the motivation of a group atmosphere. The programming is smart--focused on movement quality, strength, and conditioning that translate into real-life performance. As someone training for Hyrox, this has been a game changer. The community here is just as strong as the workouts. People cheer each other on, and it truly feels like a team environment. Palo Alto, you're lucky to have this spot--I can't recommend it enough.

About three years ago my kids were finally sleeping through the night, they were in the cusp of…read moreleaving toddler-hood and as a working mom I finally had the energy to start thinking of myself a bit more. A nice acquaintance introduced me to this gym and I will admit that I was a bit intimidated. I've never really felt "at home" in a gym or workout place. But everyone was so nice and encouraging and from the first meeting this place showed me that it was really something else. We have officially been part of this community for three years now and I've never felt judged or diminished, rather appreciated and encouraged. Also, the community is so diverse, as are the coaches- who are seriously ALL amazing. It makes such a difference to see a range of bodies, ages, to hear from Celia Cruz to Chicago to M83. And they have such patience with my clambering children and even pups. I think seeing their mom lift heavy weights helps them see themselves as able and strong as well. My life is so much healthier and happier having this place to make me stronger and less stressed. I really do see this as one of the best investments I am doing in myself and well being for the long term. So! If you are local and are hoping to find a place to workout, that will take you as you are and just encourage you and push you to reach a stronger, healthier chapter of you you should check them out.

Before 3fit, I used to find working out boring. 3fit workouts are always different and engaging and you don't realize how the time flies. I look forward to it each time. I learned to climb a rope, climb over a wall, keep my joints flexible, do a bar hold for a minute and do my very first push-up at 3fit. The community is great and we also meet outside of the gym to play pickleball which is a lot of fun. If you haven't heard of functional fitness and want a fun workout that gets results, I highly recommend 3fit.

It is safe to say Gwen is the best personal trainer I have worked with. She is extremely attentive,…read moreknowledgable, patient and an exceptional teacher. I was amazingly impressed with how she did the assessment and pointed out all of my problems through my movements, and told me how to train to improve them and my back conditions (I have a long history of severe back pain). We focused on all the basic techniques first, the first few sessions were all about how to engage the core and breathe right to make sure I work out safely. These are essential for all sport training, but also significantly important for people with bad back like me. Gwen's workouts are challenging but super fun to do. She always listen to how my body feels to make necessary adjustment. I have passed the period of mobility focus and now working more on the agility workouts. My back has been great, and after the first few months of moving slow, I started seeing steady results. I took a Dexa scan at the beginning to know where I was at, and now taking it every 2 months to keep track of the results. While my lean mass has increased a bit slowly, I have drop quite a good amount of fat mass, and my bone mineral is higher. If you are looking for a trainer, I highly recommend Gwen, she is a perfect match for any training needs but even more so for people with injury and training limits.

My favorite is Friday and Sundays which are total body days. Saturdays are typical upper body focus and other days are ass and abs, lower body focus etc. the instructors here are all friendly and energetic. The classes are all 50 mins long and you alternate between the floor and the tread mills. I love that they give a range of speed to walk/run, depending on how you feel that day and how much you want to challenge yourself. Overall, love the classes! They also have a smoothie bar that you can order from prior to class start. When class ends, you can swing by and pick up your smoothie. The classes can get pricey if you do drop in classes, but they do have promotions 2-3 times a year where you can buy class packs with no limit.

Check-in was easy enough, but they didn't ask if it was my first time at this location like they do at other studios. It's pretty straightforward though, so no big deal. I do like how they have a jar of free trial-sized Ouai shampoo just chilling at the front desk. Love free Ouai samples! Locker room is pretty small, especially after I just visited the Castro and Marina studios. It's fairly clean and the class I went to was half-full, so I didn't have to share my tread or floor spot. The wipes are also easily accessible! However, it seems like they have less bands compared to other locations. As I mentioned, the class wasn't even close to being packed, but there was only 1 light band left when I got to the station. Parking is plentiful as it's situated inside Stanford Mall, but you should still allow yourself ample time to get from the garage to the studio.
