I decided to attempt to find a new stylist considering I am staying in the area for work after college. I was skeptical about Lluminaire due to mixed reviews about the secretary and the pricing. To add, I've never left a review before but I felt the need to share my experience. I called to see if any salon could take me on my off day from work for a reasonable price. I wanted a partial - full highlight with face framing balayage pieces. I have medium length hair that hasn't been properly colored or cut in months. The secretary, Lisa, was helpful and informative when booking my appointment for me. She fit me in to see Layla since she had a last minute cancellation. Long story short, Layla is extremely talented and cosmetology is clearly her passion. She gave me a full consolation and even asked me to pull my mask down a little bit so she could see my bone structure and skin tone. I've never had someone so thorough do my hair! She truly earned her 'Master Stylist' title. She was professional while also down to earth, she asked me what budget I would like to stick to. I told her around $150 for the full high-light if possible. In short, Layla completely transformed my hair. She worked quickly and was extremely thorough; She wanted it to be perfect for me. She even gave me a complimentary blow dry so she could see the results of the color. Although the price is higher than I've ever paid, I really got what I paid for. I'm from a smaller town so this was definitely a new experience for me. I feel like Layla was a perfect fit for me. She didn't make me feel like she was taking advantage of me or rushing me. I appreciate how humble she is and I already have a follow up appointment booked. I don't have any great pictures of the transformation, but Leila took some. Came here for hair extensions. I wear extensions for past 15 years. Discussed all details with stylists. I wanted to be brunette with highlights. She seem to understand. I walked out with black hair and almost no visible highlights. Called that I am unhappy with color. Came back, showed bunch of pictures to make sure we are on the same page. This time walked our complete yellow blond . Terrible. People start comment that I need to change hair dresser. By now I spent over $3000 there . Hair looks cheap . This place might be ok for hair cut but they do not know how to do extensions and should not offer that service. When explained issue to owner and asked for money back he got very rude , condescending and aggressive . read more

In particularly, the last young lady named Anna who shampooed my hair was such a delight. Will definitely be coming back and referring all of my friends to this salon. I have been spoiled over the years when it comes to hair care. It all started in college when I was the receptionist at a high end salon, one of the perks of which was color at cost... and let's just agree that as with many things, once you've had the luxury of the real deal: there's no going back. Life took me to Boston next, and there was no shortage of excellent options there, but I settled on a great spot on Newbury Street (reviewed elsewhere on Yelp) and walked out of their doors feeling like a super star every. damn. time. Then I moved back to Maryland. I've tried all kinds of places recommended by Yelp and any number of other sources, but the last 5 years have represented the greatest expert stylist dearth of my entire adult life. Enter Bethany at Lluminaire (recommended by a colleague). First let's talk about the salon itself. It's not Newbury Street, but the atmosphere is pleasant, clean, and comfortable. The shampoo folks are friendly and good at their jobs, and the front desk staff is professional and courteous. Prices are standard for a high end salon. A cut and single process color run me around $130. Upcharge from there for more complicated color or service. As for Beth: she hits the nail on the head every time. I'm probably happier with my color now than I have ever been (and I'm not just getting the same thing every time I go in - I've asked her for everything from blonde with balayage to dark auburn and she ALWAYS delivers). I have FINALLY (and quickly) grown out what remained of a year-old bob which, despite repeated requests to phase it out, was just turning into a really long bob (not cute on fine hair). These things along would be enough, but in addition, she is really a lovely and interesting person - no forced, awkward conversation. It's always a pleasure catching up with her. For what it's worth, I have a couple of friends who also go to Lluminaire and see different stylists. With that, I can say that my positive experience is not unique. Try it! I am a bit of a perfectionist and there is only one hair salon I can go to and have my expectations exceeded every time--and that is Lluminaire. I have been a client for about two years and each time I go I am happy with the atmosphere, customer service, and technical ability of the hairstylists. The salon is beautiful, clean, and the entire staff puts effort into giving each client a great experience. I have very long ethnic hair and Ashley has accommodated each of my requests with perfect professionalism. She has colored, cut, and styled my hair to look as fabulous as that of any celebrity. Had a wonderful first experience at Lluminaire today. Irene did a beautiful job cutting long layers and new bangs. She was kind, professional, and really listened to my wishes, turning my lifeless locks into a stylish, bouncy look that has had heads turning all evening. Lluminaire nailed the small touches too--head massage, drinks and snacks, and a serene and open atmosphere. I've had some iffy experiences with salons in Baltimore--not everyone wants an edgy hipster look! I'll be going to Lluminaire from now on. read more

I can't even put into words how disappointed I am with this salon! My stylist recently moved far away so I had to try someone new. I went to Lluminaire as it has a great reputation or at least used to so I thought I could trust them. I had balyage done which I've had done many times I even showed the girl a pic of the color I like my blonde. She totally disregarded it & made it yellow but not only that she over processed it so badly that it's all breaking off. I'm horrified & so upset. She took over 4 hours to do the service, why, for what? It should never take that long! I called to make an appointment to correct the color because it was so orange after a few weeks. I came in for her to put a toner on my hair which is quick & easy. I was there for 2 hours!!! I left with a pinkish purple tinge to my hair & all the highlights were dull from the toner ( glaze ) !!! I will never step foot in there again! They are unprofessional & sub par at best!! I will never recommend this salon to anyone! read more

I go to Irene and was referred by a friend. I moved from NYC and it has been really hard finding good hair salons in MD. After a series of terrible haircuts, I went here. I am pretty easy and had never had a bad haircut in NYC...so imagine my dismay when I moved here and couldn't get one that didn't make me look like Rosie O'Donnell. Anyway, The place is nice, the staff is good, and the stylist I see knows whats she's doing. I only get my hair cut there so I don't know about color. I feel like the prices are fair too. read more

I liked my experience the first time I went there. It was nice and I enjoyed my haircut, but felt that my hair looked the same when I left. They were very nice, the salon is clean and everyone was professional. The second time I went there, I looked like a little girl with tight curls. When I arrived, there was some confusion about what type of appointment I had been scheduled for, my stylist did not seem to understand what I was looking to have done (despite the fact that I provide three pictures of the same exact hairstyle, taken from different angles, for her to reference) and the price for end product was simply outrageous. The appointment took a really long time. I have had color and highlights many times before, but never has the process taken over 5 hours. The style I asked for, and provided examples of, was not at all complicated or unusual. Just basic color and highlights. By the end of it, I was just ready to leave. My hair had minimal highlights added and I was really disappointed when I got home to see how it looked after styling. The price is what really put me over the top... So much money for so few highlights. They are barely noticeable and my hair looks nothing at all like the photos I provided as a guide. My hair doesn't look bad, but it certainly doesn't look like I spent $300.00 on it either. I just can't justify returning for a second time. Also, if you are looking for a relaxing day at the salon, this is not the place. Lots of kids running around, crying and shouting. That also detracted from the overall experience. read more

Horrible customer service. Wanda was just plain rude. When you come to see it, these places are based on customer satisfaction. There are places where they go above and beyond to ease you in and make you feel comfortable. But just a tad good comments and they let it go to their heads. They are just plain arrogant and rude. Bubbles are close by in towson and they have very pleasing people and BELIEVE IT OR NOT. Megan's and Heather are really good and much cheaper than you pa for for this salon! Best advice, avoid this place. You pay them for the services, they are not doing it for free! You don't have to put up with horrible people like Wanda!!! read more

I recently got my haircut here for the first time. I believed that I asked for a relatively straight forward hair style with the front longer and the back shorter and layers. I ended up with basically a bob with no layers. I was very disappointed with my haircut. read more

Called for a color appointment n was told my stylist didn't have time to do a blow dry after - I said I will do it myself downstairs - as I have for the five years I've been going there both to save $30 and do it the way I like it. Was informed they no longer allow that due to space constraints as of January 1. I had been there in January and was allowed to do it then - when I pointed this out the receptionist said some staff weren't yet informed at that point so it was a mistake and furthermore they were the only salon in Baltimore to let customers do that and didn't have the room any longer. While I get they have to do what is best for their business, this is simply not true. While I love Bethenny, a very talented stylist, the haughty attitude at the front desk had bothered me before and this time I felt she was both unapologetic and dismissive. I now go to Lisa K. at Salon 36 where they truly care about your satisfaction and were happy to accommodate my request. I love my color and left happy. read more
