I saw a promo for SNS offering $50 blowouts and bubbly for Galentine's Day so I immediately booked online. The event was supposed to begin at 12 so I booked my blowout for 12 and showed up expecting a little more razzle dazzle and some bubbly. There was none to be found, not even an offer of water. I saw Sarah last month after my old stylist went on maternity leave at my old salon. Sarah was AMAZING. I feel like I always ask for something very specific with my blonding and up until seeing her, never really got what I wanted. I got my hair done by Morgan who honestly is such a god send. She listened to exactly what I wanted, gave me realistic expectations that I may not be able to go as cool toned as I wanted within the first try and worked with me for how much hair I wanted to cut off (had a lot of dead ends but didn't want to lose too much length) and was really fun to talk to! Just because I'm used to terrible, expensive experiences in NYC doesn't mean that this review is a product of relativity. What I mean is that Scene 217 deserves five stars in an absolute sense; one for each of the five points essential to a worthy salon experience: 1) AVAILABILITY: This isn't one of those places that B.S.es you, doublebooking to maximize revenue or underbooking to cushion for delays in service. My friend and I, down in Baltimore at a hotel on a Saturday morning right before a wedding, both got very lucky that the stylists were able to accommodate a corrective bang trim (thanks, Mom, for thinking you could give me a DIY touch up with mini-scissors from my Swiss Army knife) for me and a cut for my friend, who'd just gotten in at 4 a.m. off a delayed flight from Denver. So right off the bat, they had the awareness to know that we did not mind if our appointments were half an hour apart; we needed to get it done. Another place might have just said they didn't have room for two. 2) LOCATION: In a clean, bright ground floor building in the uncongested, safe-feeling periphery of Baltimore's Little Italy. It was a pleasure to walk here from the SpringHill Suites Marriott in the Inner Harbor. Afterwards, we reaped the double benefits of the location, as we accidentally meandered through the jolly St. Anthony's Feast fair in Li'l Italy, then onwards to Fells Point. No cabs necessary. 2) STYLE: It was a relief to see that everyone from the gal at the front counter to the girls sweeping up little sprigs of freshly cut hair in the back all had individualistic but professional looking hairstyles of their own. This is about more than just appearances; it signifies good and objective judgement in the styling of hair. 3) SERVICE: The smiles here are just as honest and refreshing as the tall glass of ice water they offer upon your arrival. My stylist Katie was a great conversationalist and got the bang trim done in no time. She also accommodated my request for additional trimming/styling for an even straighter, blunter effect (which is harder than you think to convince people you WANT). And she didn't just do what I asked of her; she made sure to provide the RESULT that I was wishing for. Minutes later, my friend's stylist gave her a cut that made her hair look literally the best I'd EVER seen it look in our 18-year (and counting) friendship together. I mean, her hairlooked like a wig of gossamer gold, and I mean that in a good way. 4) PRICE: $55 as stated for a haircut. And my #bangtrim (yes, hashtagging in case it helps someone find this place for their bangs)? "It's on me," Katie said. Wha-a-at? I gave her all the cash left in my wallet, and walked away feeling it was not enough. Thanks to Scene 217, my bestie and I had time to see some sights and bust a gut on seafood before skipping in style to the wedding, which wasn't ON TOP OF Edgar Allan Poe's grave, as previously feared, but in Westminster Hall, outside which he is laid to rest in a cemetery. Feeling quite the raven, I dared to sit with him and take a photo in case the establishment sees it as a symbol of my gratitude for the perfect hair experience in an unknown town. Thanks, ladies! Maybe next time I need a haircut, I'll use your excellence as an excuse to take a trip down to Baltimore. It might even be more economical than funding a BANG up job up here in the Big Crapple of hair horrors. read more

I've always had bad experiences when it comes to hair salons until I found a place and a stylist back from where I used to live and everything was great! I have been going to that particular salon for 10+ years. Everyone knew me, they would reserve a parking space for me, offer to get me lunch from the nearby restaurants, etc. And then I moved to Baltimore with the hope of finding 'my' new salon. I read customer reviews and decided to try Scene 217. Originally, my appointment with Candace was at 1045am, Wednesday - I like early appointments. Wednesday early in the morning, I got a call informing me that Candace is not available because she's not feeling well, but since I read a bunch of good feedback about her I decided to reschedule for when she's back. I was rescheduled for the following day. 15 minutes before my appointment I arrived at Scene 217; it is a small, chic salon in Little Italy right across Vacarro's Pastry Shop. It's really cute inside (outside it's very plain) and they have plenty of beauty products on display for sale. The owner Debbie was there and offered me something to drink. Candace was still with another customer so I had to wait for my turn, however, she finished on time and started working with me right away. First impression, she is a really pleasant and graceful lady. Genuine smile and concern for her client. I instantly felt at ease with her. She asked what I wanted for my haircut and I had 3 photos prepared so I showed them to her. I asked her for suggestion and she explained to me what she would want to do. I told her that I just wanted to have a shorter hair, so I let her decide and do her thing - anyway, she is the expert and I wanted to see her own work on me. Katya shampooed my hair with a little massage. I was disappointed, because I love massages and I expected so much from her since I read about her "magic fingers" and "best scalp massage". Mine was so and so and also the water kept splashing on my face and neck. Not good. Anyway, I was there for a haircut and Katya was friendly enough so I just had to live with the kind of shampoo and scalp massage that I got. For $55 haircut (not including tips), it is a very good place to go to. I suggest you schedule with Candace - I am very happy with the result. My husband loved it and all my friends too. Seriously in love with my hair! I am a Maryland native but moved to Philly and have not found a satisfactory hair salon in the almost 2 years that I've lived there. Scene 217 was recommended to me by my sister and so I made an appointment and the 2.5 hour drive down to get my hair done. I hate to admit but I hadn't done a thing to my hair in a year - not even a cut!! My stylist Brittney rocked it out! She listened to what I wanted and helped me to understand what was realistic & achievable for my hair. I REALLY appreciated that! I mean, a lot of salons will blow smoke, charge you full price and not give you the results you wanted. Brittney was honest and professional - not to mention super sweet and fun to spend 3 hours with while I got my hair done! :) My results were flawless and worth every penny. The prices were more than I was used to, but I also have never been this happy with my hair so I really feel like it was worth it. Plus, Brittney did such a great job, that my balayage won't need much touching up for a few months so I feel it was a great investment. Love it here! This is my go-to salon because my girl Janet moved onto Scene North from her last location. I am so glad she did. The staff and stylists are beyond friendly, the digs are so fresh and so clean clean, and the work is beyond compare. Janet listens to what you want and sets a clear intention and path on getting you there (even if it's eventual, to protect your hair's health), which is appreciated. Since I moved to the Towson area, this is the salon I go to. The price for a men's hair cut is very reasonable especially given the quality of the stylists. Due to scheduling, I've probably seen at least 4-5 different ones and they were all incredibly friendly and did a great job with my hair. The decor inside is very chic with a kind of rustic/farmhouse look. The receptionist always greets you warmly and offers a drink too. I'd highly recommend anyone to come here for a quality hair cut. read more

Post grad, I felt like I was ready to graduate from going to my parents' salons during visits home. I work in television and needed a stylist to care about my hair (read: professional vanity) as seriously as I did and develop a relationship. I pored over salons up and down 95. I had a very in-depth excel spreadsheet (Instagram profiles, pricing, specialties, etc)... and something kept bringing me back to SNS and Cerissa - I am now so sure this was a sign of all the good to come! SNS is simply GORGEOUS inside! Open space, extremely friendly and gracious staff, colorfully decorated, intentional atmosphere... I look forward to every visit (and they have a drink for every occasion). Cerissa is... everything I've ever dreamed of in having a hair stylist to call "mine." She's charming, approachable, dedicated to her craft (SERIOUSLY, follow her education insta @hairrebeleducation), generous with her wisdom (taught me how to really blow dry my hair, use new products, answers all of my questions from shearing scissors to method to anything else), and a badass artist + mom. I just moved to Baltimore and needed a new go to salon, which I haven't had since I lived in Brooklyn. This place is adorable and just what I was looking for. Small, charming, intimate and cozy. I got an appointment right away with Cerissa who was great! Took the time to listen, play with my hair and ask questions about how I styled it at home. She made me look pretty much exactly like the picture! Good value, nice products, but she didn't push anything on me at all, which is nice. And they do complimentary bang trims. I've found my neighborhood gem! Only reason not giving 5 stars is they only take cash or check, which isn't horrible it's just that I never have cash on me! read more

I live in Little Italy and work in the Inner Harbor and really wanted to love this salon if not for anything else but the convenience. The location of the salon is great, and the interior is cute and trendy without being intimidating. All the staff were really nice and easy to talk to as well. I have long dirty blonde hair and I typically get highlights that I like to be a bit edgy and bold. The haircut I got was fine, I didn't want to take off much length so the stylist just trimmed a few inches off. I was really disappointed in the highlights. They didn't match the "bold/edgy" look I described, and the highlights at my root growth were really faint. The prices were probably on par for most higher end salons - I just wish I was happier with the result. I might give them another shot with a different stylist. My first visit to Scene 217 was last Friday (11-4-11). I called ahead the day before and was booked with Candance at 11:30am the next day. The place is super cute! They offered me a drink right away and I waited for Candance to finish with a client. Once it was my turn, she sat me in the chair and we talked for about 5 min about what I wanted done. I have super thick long hair so lots of fun layers were in order. She told me her plan and I was like, let's do it! Katya took me back for a shampoo and she gave me the BEST scalp massage! She took her time with the shampoo and even combed in my conditioner! Amazing! I went back in the chair and Candance worked her scissor magic! She gave me the exact layers I was looking for but the BEST part was the blow out! She took her time and used the round brush to create sexy volume and slight curls. My hair smelled amazing and the volume and curls last all weekend! I went to 2 exercise classes on Sat (hair in pony tail) and then did dry shampoo Sunday and my hair looked like it did when I left the salon Friday afternoon! I couldn't believe it! I may just go back some Saturday night to get a blow out before I go out on the town! The price seemed reasonable for the city - shampoo/scalp massage/conditioner/cut/blow out - $55. That may seem high to some but a great deal to me - especially when the service and the people are super friendly :) They only take cash or checks so come prepared! No credit cards accepted!!! It's not really an inconvenience if you know that before hand. I was told when I booked my appt so I had time to hit the ATM before my hair cut. I visited Scene 217 on Friday, June 10 to get my hair done before a close friend's wedding. The task of going somewhere for hair, especially when you're in from out of town and have literally no idea where to start, can be especially daunting. Finding Scene 217 has been one of the times that Yelp has truly and sincerely paid off; I had an absolutely awesome experience! From the initial booking to the accommodation at the salon, they really made me feel like a local even though I'm not sure when I'll be back in Baltimore again. I had the pleasure of seeing Morgan, who not only was kind and a great conversation (Game of Thrones!) but she wound up getting exactly what I wanted even though my own description of it wasn't all too great. Further, she had a great understanding of the time constraint I was under and gave me one of the best up-dos I've ever had. Getting a compliment from the bride about my hair made it feel even better. My appointment was for 1:45 in the afternoon and my hair was still going strong through 10 PM, which is A+ quality in my book. The receptionist was very nice as well, offering a glass of water for me as soon as I got in, and I feel awful that I can't recall her name. I've been going back to Washington, DC to see my previous hairstylist for two years, but when I got sick and couldn't reschedule for over a month, I scrambled to see someone in Baltimore. I have very thick, straight hair that grows fast, and my pixie cut was turning into a sad mullet. I saw online that Katie at Scene 217 liked working with short hair and knew I wanted to see her. At first she wasn't available so I made an appointment with another stylist, but asked to be on the cancellation list to see Katie. Then I got a call within ten minutes saying that Katie heard how much I wanted to see her and was willing to come in early Saturday morning to see me! How many places will do that?! At the appointment, Katie understand exactly what I was looking for, even when I couldn't pull up the pictures I had tried saving. I live around the corner from this salon. I go there every time I need a haircut/style. I thought I would post a review from a guy's point of view. First off, the staff is really friendly and they go out of their way to make you feel at home ... service is always great and they have always made the effort to address me by name and when I sit down for my cut it is always a continuation of the previous conversation. They take the time to get to know you and in no way do they cut corners to get you out of there quickly. My hair is difficult to cut and I have never had a bad cut here. OK, now for the real reason everyone loves Scene 217 ... one word .... Tatia! She is an absolute gem. Tatia is the glue that holds this group of talented hairstylists together. She is the personable and friendly face you see when you walk into the salon, she is the pleasant young woman that offers you a cold drink, and she is the person that washes your hair and massages your scalp before your cut. Usually, I would wait until I went home (Los Angeles, CA) to see my stylist for a haircut, but I wouldn't be going home for a while. My hair and bangs really needed a trim and I've been planning to get Balayage highlights for a while. Originally, I was supposed to go to Scene 217 for a Balayage highlight consultation today. Luckily, they had an opening right after my consultation, so I decided to get both my haircut and Balayage highlights. Morgan did a wonderful job! This was my first time getting Balayage highlights and I had shown Morgan two different hair colors that I was considering. She is very knowledgeable and recommended the caramel brown for my skin tone. The Balayage came out wonderfully (Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures. I should've taken some for proof, but Morgan has proof!). I love the results and I definitely recommend Scene 217 and Morgan if anyone needs a cut and color. read more

I cannot express how much I adore this place. Debbie the owner is so helpful and will spend long time to make you happy. She listens carefully and then suggest the best haircut that will compliment your face. I made a mistake visiting another high end and organic hair salon recently and they butchered my hair. I will be calling Debbie to fix the mess they made in a few weeks when my hair grows out a little. I wish she carried more organic hair lines rather than Aveda, but I guess it is better than some other lines out there. Got my first haircut and highlights here a couple weeks ago and am still thrilled with the experience and the results! My hairstylist Katie was honestly the most easy-going and genuine stylist I've had. Very easy to relax and have a conversation with her. She did a shoulder length bob haircut with subtle medium brown Bayalage highlights, which turned out very well given that I came in with my hair already dyed at home. This was easily the most skilled haircut I've had. The salon is lovely, and they serve tea/drinks and candy while you're getting your hair done. Already have my second appointment scheduled. I called last minute, desperately needing a haircut, and Debbie was so accomodating and fit me into her schedule. I was warmly greeted by the receptionist when i came in and asked if i wanted anything to drink. it's so nice to have a salon that makes you feel welcome and not just another passing appointment on their schedule. i received a very relaxing shampoo and scalp massage where she took her time and made sure i was comfortable. When i sat in the cutting chair, i told Debbie that i'm trying to grow out my short hair and that i was stuck and in a rut.
