So glad we found this place for dinner! The menu had a decent number of vegetarian options which is what got us through the door. We sat at the bar and ordered ourselves a flight of all local beers. They were all amazing! The wide variety of beers here will accommodate any palate. The charcuterie board had a "veggie options" which gave us 3 types of cheeses, a small salad in the middle and amazing bread. Oh! It also had the most delicious deviled egg on it. (It's ok the menu as a stand alone and I highly recommend if you're in to them.) There was a substantial amount of food on this board and could easily be shared by 3 people. (Ask for extra stone ground mustard- it's amazing!) We then decided to split a veggie burger (that's made in house). They even cut in in half and plated it separately for us! There was plentiful fries too! The burger was amazing! We added pimento cheese to it which took it to a whole another level. The cheese is spicy and creamy. We opted for a side of marinated beets too which were just what the doctor ordered. They were no nonsense beets tossed in a Dijon dressing. (Just like I make at home!) Went to this restaurant to get food for my husband who was released from the hospital. He had been eating hospital food and wanted something more substantial. He went to the website and wanted the shrimp and grits. I realized upon going there their lunch menu didn't include that item. I explained this to the server and he said "no problem" and they would be happy to make it for him. I was so pleased with their response and thankful for their flexibility. Tea the best part of the meal was the service and restaurant staff. It was downhill from there. The NY strip I ordered had a nice crust. However, I could tell that the meat was frozen beforehand due to the texture of the steak. Especially for the over 30$ price, I paid for it. They have a nice-sized beer, wine, and spirits menu. I ordered a flight. Which I realized was pointless because they only had 8 drafts for me to pull from. The rest of the beers and ciders were in bottles or cans. This was misleading because the option for flights is at the top of the beer and cider menu. That leads one to believe that there is a large number of beers on draft. I am sad to say that there was also a lack of diversity in the restaurant patrons. The crowd was painfully pale in comparison to me and my party. I would also recommend that the height of the booth benches be checked. They were very low. Not all comfortable for any of the members of my party. The shortest person is 5'8". For dessert, I ordered carrot cake. It was passable. But after my disappointment with the earlier portions of my meal I had an idea of what to expect. However, I did not expect the dense cake that I received. It was obvious that the cake was delivered premade to the restaurant. We were not expecting to come here for lunch since we originally chose another nearby spot to go to. When we found out there was about a 45 minute wait for the original place we chose, we found this as a back up option and I am glad to say that this was definitely better than what we expected. We started off by ordering the skillet cornbread which Was absolutely delicious! Coming from NYC, I don't think I had real southern cornbread before and this was my first time. It was a mixture of a little savory and sweetness, with their sweet cream butter, we were all resisting eating more of this because we didn't want to get full off this before our entrees came out. If you come here, definitely try the cornbread! We also got wings, apple French toast, and a chicken sandwich. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals! I got the wings with their house made ranch which was so much better than the ranch that I normally get with wings. Room for improvement but definite potential. The parent company has some great establishments (I've been to two others) that boast fine dining and embellished decor. The decor is on point for this concept, but the food and service could use some tweaking. I recently relocated to Durham from Seattle and found, although the cost of living here is 1/2, the prices at Local 22 are almost comparable to the Emerald City. No argument, based on the intricate and unique craft cocktails and farm to table fare. However, the shrimp and grits entree was served lukewarm (odd since the protein additions were steaming hot), and without seasoning. I asked the server for a side of cheese to liven up the dish and was brought Parmesan. Now I'm no southerner, but I expected some shredded cheddar or the like. The Parmesan did nothing, nor would have salt or pepper (neither of which offered when I mentioned the blandness). On to the drinks. The first cocktail was a play on a rum runner and tasty but sparing for the cost. My second, I waffled on. I told the server I love bourbon and it appears to be a play on an Old Fashioned but I very much dislike Campari, and is it very bitter? "It's not too bad." I might be spoiled, but coming from a large craft cocktail community, I'm accustomed to being told "give it a try and if you don't like it, we'll find something you love." Not the case here. I explained my palette needed a bit more sweetness and asked for a shot of Amaretto to add (don't judge). She cheerfully brought it and, of course, added $8 to the bill. The dessert was a saving grace. Bread pudding. Simplistic yet flavorful. Rustic with elegant presentation. Delicious. I did my best to create rapport with the server, and engage her in decision making, ask about the restaurant's history etc. She was very sweet and accommodating, but new and not yet trained to the level of customer service I expected. When I asked how late they stayed open because I'd be sipping my drink for a while, she'd replied "10pm. That's fine, I don't care. I'm just waiting on my dinner." ..... All in, tip included, it was apx $71 for my special, two drinks, and dessert. I could only eat 1/3 of the entree because it was cold quickly and I boxed it but accidentally left it behind. It was not worth the Lyft cost to return and get it. I might give them another shot in the future, but I'm disappointed with my first experience. I'd rather step next door to their sister restaurant Parizade (sp?) where the service was superior and the mere mention of needing more salt resulted in immediate attentiveness and even a stop by the GM. Come on Local 22. Step up your game & impress the imports like the locals said you would. You can do it!! read more

Visiting Duke we stopped here before lunch. The service was top notch. Seated quickly and brought to our table fast and hot and it was a busy dining room. Our waiter was exceptionally friendly, helpful and more than willing to accommodate us to alter a dish for our six year old. The Quinoa salad was really good and the deviled eggs excellent. However, Yelp lists this place as kid friendly as do some of the reviews but it is not. They do not have a kid menu, the food too sophisticated for a child and the art work near the bathroom definitely not kid friendly. read more

The best thing about Local 22 is the atmosphere and service. We were seated promptly in the beautiful patio area. The menu is an interesting mix of american bar fare with a special rotating menu and nice selection of salads. We had a lamb burger with sweet potato fries, that my partner really enjoyed. I had the monkfish with sauteed spinach, tomato sauce and Yukon potato chips. My dish was flavorful overall, although it could have down with more salt, but lacking in texture. It needed something more krunchy or sense, everything was light... We ended our dinner with the flourless chocolate orange cake. It was warm and more like a grainy brownie, very sweet. I love this restaurant!! I have been here twice since moving to Durham this past summer and have had a great experience both times. Have been able to get a table in a reasonable amount of time both times. I love how they have a consistent menu, but also a rotating seasonal menu full of delicious dishes. One of our favorite aspects of Local 22 is their incredible cocktails, one of which the Rye-tai my boyfriend has been trying to make at home and just can't get it to taste as great as Local 22 makes it. The first time I came here I got sweet potato gnocchi and it was absolutely delicious, bursting with flavors of sage and rosemary. Had a great brunch here with some friends. We totally didn't realize how popular it is for Sunday brunch so we didn't have a reservation. The hostess and manager did a great job accommodating us and within ~8 minutes we had a high top table inside. My husband and I ended up splitting the cast-iron hush puppies to start, the portion was huge and they were delicious, super cheesy with a little bit of a kick from the jalapeño. For my meal I got the Eggs Benedict with the spinach on top. I do love me some hollandaise sauce, and Local 22 did not disappoint with this meal! I loved the potatoes that I ordered as my side too. We had a really great brunch experience here, definitely a nice place to meet up with friends, I'll definitely have to come back and try other things on the menu, like french toast or come for another meal! read more

Cool place to check out in Durham. The inside and ambience are great with large wooden tables for a farmhouse/ country brewery vibe. They were able to accommodate a large group of 8 of us no problem. Highlights: THE BRUSSEL SPROUTS. Holy moly these were tasty. I'm not even a huge sprouts fan but I couldn't get enough of them. Perfect for sharing with a group. Deviled eggs and hush puppies were also a hit for sharing with the crew. Shrimp and grits were super flavorful and good portion size. One of us ordered the burger and it was supreme! And HUGE. Brunch was a 22 out of 44. In other words, very average. The smoked, cured, aged charcuterie plate was the best part of the meal. However, that is the only thing I would recommend given the quality of the other dishes. The saltiness of the pear and prosciutto flat bread made it almost inedible, with minimal amounts of arugula and some tasteless pear slices. The chicken 'n' biscuit were also rather tasteless. We came on a Monday, and there was only one server, but she managed to bring everything out at a decent time. However, the food leads me to give Local 22 a 2.5 star rating. read more

Let me start off this review by sharing that I was VERY hesitant to try out Local 22 as many reviewers said their food is inconsistent and didn't recommend it to others. I'm really glad I didn't listen to those reviews though! I came here for my farewell dinner (as my internship came to an end) and was really looking for a restaurant where my (now ex-) co-workers and I could enjoy some delicious food, drinks and have a great time and Local 22 did the job! I started the night with their Durham Bull cocktail which is made with Serrano infused vodka... YUM! Spicy but still, so delicious and refreshing! It is made with some lime and cheerwine as well--go figure! They also have rotating draft beers which are listed on the chalk board closest to the bar. The variety of food is awesome! Our party ordered different things from the salmon large plate, the cured meats and cheese boards, their burger, the Carolina panino, and sides of hush puppies, their daily Mac and cheese and tator tots. I split the 5-item board and ordered their daily hush puppies. The hush puppies were amazing! So crispy on the outside yet moist and flavorful on the inside! It came with a cheesy sauce on the bottom and it paired very nicely. Just a bite of it convinced someone else to order them too! I realize paying $8 for hush puppies could make someone uncomfortable but I really think they're worth it! They're the size of golf balls and you get 5! The meat and cheese board was also delicious! We ordered the local cheeses, sausage, salmon, prosciutto and salami as our 5 items and it came with mustard, tomato jam, deviled egg, pickled veggies and crostinis. I wasn't a huge fan of the pickles veggies but the tomato jam and each of the items we chose were so tasty! Very much like a charcuterie board and easy to share with others! The rest of my party really enjoyed their meals as well. I didn't get a chance to sample everything but everyone really raved about their food... All of it! Even the person who ordered the salmon large plate and was unsure about the cucumber salad that came with it enjoyed it. Our server was great although it took him awhile to get our drinks and meals going. I can't completely blame him though as we were waiting for two people who never showed. But once we told him we were ready to roll, he was great! Definitely helped assured us with our meal decisions as well! Parking is a bit weird since there are limited spots in front of the actual restaurants but I used the visitor lot nearby with no issues. The decor of the restaurant makes me think of farm to table and is very homey which is nice. I also agree that is is very easy to miss if you are driving by! I would recommend going on google maps and looking at their street view option to familiarize yourself with the area. I did this and didn't have as many issues finding the place. Overall, I am thrilled to have dined at Local 22 and highly recommend it to others! Their unique cocktails and delicious southern comfort foods set them apart in my opinion from their competitors. I have been wanting to go to Local 22 for a while now, having followed their Facebook page and thinking that their specials looked very tasty. As it happens, I was free today and so went in around 1:30 pm for a late lunch. They had a couple of specials listed on the board near the entrance, but I was seated too quickly to get a good look at them. The place was almost deserted, although it was a charming dining area with a sizable bar. My waiter was pleasant and talkative - eventually too talkative, since I was there in part to read my book. Perhaps he was bored since there were only a couple of tables to serve. Although my drink order was taken (iced tea) it was never delivered. I also was not told about the specials. I ended up ordering two of the bar bites appetizers, the house made pickles and the marinated olives, for $3 each. The portions were very small. I didn't end up liking the pickles since they were sweeter than I care for, but I should have asked whether they were sweet or not. The olives were very tasty, with what I believe was some thyme in the marinade. I had the Carolina Panini sandwich, with prosciutto, mozzarella, tomatoes and basil, and tater tots on the side. When it arrived, I was amazed at the huge pile of tater tots - definitely more than I could eat. They were cooked in some unknown fat, perhaps it was bacon fat. It was a bit too much. The sides were ketchup and a nice Sriracha aioli. The panini itself was not browned, and soggy on the bottom, which was off-putting, though the inside tasted fine. Overall I was not terribly impressed, but I'm going to be giving it another try in the hopes that the experience will be better next time. Tried this place for the first time for dinner. It was about 7:15pm on a Saturday night and we had reservations, so seated us right away outside on the expansive patio. We loathe eating inside these days with everything going on so we always look for places that have outside seating. Food was great, we started with deviled eggs, and moved to main course. I had the fish of the day (tho I can't recall the name of it!) and wife had the shrimp & grits. The fish was very tasty, slightly charred on top, very tender and flavorful, but portion was very small for the price. Wife said shrimp & grits was a bit bland, nice but not in the top 3 that she's had (she a S&G's aficionado!). I first tried Local 22's man and cheese at Durham's "Taste, the Event" a few weeks ago. I was so bowled over that I quickly made reservations for this weekend (which happens to be Mother's Day/graduation weekend). We arrived and found parking to be a bit tricky. Ended up in a "visitors" spot in the parking garage for Erwin Square, which seemed allowed. We were seated quickly, and I immediately started noticing the decor. Someone obviously put a lot of thought into every detail,and I really liked it. Our server was super friendly and helpful, even when we asked him for suggestions as to which cocktail he liked best. We ordered the "Sweet Blonde" cocktail which was very good. All of their cocktails sounded amazing, and reminded me of Geer Street's cocktail selection with clever names and mature favors. For food we tried their mac and cheese of the day (which naturally involved house smoked bacon, and was amazing), their hush puppies of the day (which somehow involved sausage and cheddar, and were amazing), salad topped with strawberries, beets and goat cheese, and a flat bread with sausage and peppers. In short, everything was delicious and I would have tried anything on that menu. They are doing a great job. Service was excellent and quick. Local 22 used to be good. Before it got too busy. Being fans, we convinced a group of our friends to go there, excited to share their excellent bread pudding with them, as part of a group babysitting arrangement. Called beforehand to make a reservation, were told the manager would call back, who didn't, so we figured we were set. But when we showed up, there was no record of the call. And so we had to wait for more than 30 minutes, with the babysitting clock winding down. Moreover, while we were waiting we were made to feel like we were in their way. Which we were, being a party of 7 clogging the aisle between the kitchen and the restaurant floor. So then came the food. Iceberg wedge salad that was oily, too vinegary, and barely edible. So I just ate the bacon and a few of the less oily leaves. Entree was a pork cheek panini, which I was excited to try. But the meat was like tasteless mush, and not a very good combo with the equally tasteless panini bread. Which is maybe how it is supposed to be, but why have something so unappetizing on a limited menu? What does it say that the best part of my meal was the crudités? The worst part was, the clock ran out on the babysitters and so we had to leave without even considering dessert. Which made us 0 for 3 for the evening's objectives. We were just glad to get back to our kids w/o having to pay overtime. But it gets better. We thought the suboptimal night out was behind us. But today we see the ENTIRE bill was charged to our card, even though the receipt we signed was just for our share. I wonder how many others have been overcharged like us? So we called to rectify things, which they did. After hearing our sad tale, the sympathetic manager told us that reservations for groups larger than 4 were not taken on the weekend. (But when we showed up, and more importantly, when we called to make the reservation, no one told us that either -- so maybe the hosts should be told what the restaurant's policy is.) The manager was apologetic, but didn't give us any consideration, despite us having been the ones to introduce them to our group of friends. No more! We're done with Local 22, sorry. Glorified, expensive, and not always yummy comfort food with uneven service. Sounds like a recipe for a typical George's restaurant. read more

Service is very important to me. When I got this restaurant and sat at the bar, I asked the bar tender what the specials were, and he said they were "on the board over there." They were on a board near the entrance in a dimly lit restaurant not even facing the bar! I had to get up and walk over to the board to see them. He proceeded to do this to all the other customers that came and sat at the bar. Rather than telling us what the specials were, each customer had to get up, walk over to the board, and then come back to their seats. The food was ok. It was not terrible nor was it impressive. I had the special of the day which was swordfish over rice noodle salad. The swordfish was overcooked and rice noodles were undercooked. What I did like about this restaurant was the decor. It is super cute inside. They also use locally sourced ingredients. If there is anything I like more than supporting local businesses, it is supporting local businesses that support other local businesses. It sounded like the table service was better than the service I got at the bar, so I wouldn't write this place off. I just would not suggest sitting at the bar. Also, the hushpuppies which are a menu staple, were really good. So I would suggest you also get a standard menu item. read more

Local 22 is one of my favorite gastropubs in Durham. They have a great ambiance and it is a great place for group events. They are famous with their pizza however I think their seasonal menu is the best. I have been a couple of times and I have tried the wild mushroom risotto, beer brined roasted chicken and the chili sautéed salmon. The salmon was placed on top of lima beans and they were matched perfectly. It was delicious. The wild mushroom risotto was perfectly cooked and the beer brined roasted chicken was breathtaking! They usually have tables. You can always find a table without a reservation. They also have tables outdoors and during winter they turn on the heaters for you if you would like to sit outside. read more

Local 22 was always showing up on my Yelp search for restaurants in the Downtown Durham area, so finally my husband and I gave it a try. Thanks to this rustic and country chic restaurant, the boring weird office-like building that houses it has something to vamp it up. Though I think Local 22 should have its own building because its a bit tricky to find in that corporate tower-looking establishment. Especially at night, in the rain. The giant black chalkboard with daily specials by the host stand looks great, and you can see part of the kitchen the minute you walk in. Loved the hanging light bulbs above the high tables as well. The bathroom was also decorated up to match the rest of the dining experience! The bathroom is always where a restaurant falls short, so I'm glad it had decorations, a really cool reclaimed wood wall. I was very pleased with the prosciutto and basil pesto sandwich that I got! FINALLY a sandwich with THICK slices of prosciutto! That's right, don't be cheap if you offer a prosciutto sandwich. My Black and Stormy rum drink was awesome, and I finished off with their chocolate custard delight desert. Legit chocolate and whipped cream - perfect with a glass of Riesling :) I definitely recommend Local 22 to others and am looking forward to going back. read more

Just few sad pieces of basil on a couple of slices. The burger has two patties which usually means is premade and big store item type thing. I might be wrong on this one. Fries were soggy and same burnt. One disgusting thing happened at the end: the take home box had a roach in it. We told the waiter about it, and they didn't charge for the pizza. Which was a nice gesture. We will not return to this place. read more
