shrimp and grits, great portion, lots of plump shrimp
Erik S.

After helping out at a Yelp event nearby, it was kind of late and I wanted a decent meal before hopping in the car to go back to Greensboro. Already being on Franklin Street, I knew that wouldn't be a problem, and I decided to just pop into this Carolina Brewery location (I think their main one) because it was convenient. The inside is a beautiful mix of wood and metals with different levels, an interesting bar configuration and plenty of TVs. I took a seat at the bar and received excellent service, and enjoyed conversation about sports, beer, and food with a couple of other gentlemen sitting close by. The only snafu of the meal was the tea got dumped (close to closing) after I got my first glass but before I got a refill. They replaced it with another drink of course, but that was good tea! I ordered the shrimp and grits with tempered expectation, but will summarily say they were exceeded. This was a really nice sized portion of thick creamy grits, a total of 8 VERY plump shrimp, enough salty bacon and onion to balance it out. Each bite was well balanced, and while it can't compare to anything I've had out in the low country by the coast, it was better than I hope for this spot and time. If I had to suggest an improvement, it could use an element with a subtle sweetness, like roasted or blistered sweet corn shaved off the cob. I also would like the sauce more pronounced, or even a red-eye gravy. I wouldn't call it dry, but it could have benefited. That would take it onto another level. Anyhow, I enjoyed the meal and friendly conversation. I would certainly return next time I'm in Chapel Hill.

We were in town and decided to check this place out for the Super Bowl. To be honest, it wasn't the best place for this. Lots of TV's and our waitress was amazing, however it was really cold out. The manager refused to turn up the heat. The waitress felt bad and brought a space heater and got it plugged in a moved as close as possible, however it was still freezing. It's a neat place and the food was just ok. We left at halftime because we were so cold. Went back to our hotel and finished the game. I left our waitress a very good tip since she was so awesome. I just didn't care for the managers attitude. I probably won't ever return there if I'm in town. Lots of other options are probably better on Franklin Street.

The ambience was nice, especially because they had the windows open for the lovely spring weather! The food came fast as well, but the options we chose (Veggie burger, mac & cheese) was not the best we've had. I'd still recommend this place overall.

Overall experience was pretty good! The wait staff was nice and helpful and the restaurant was clean and provided a good amount of seating. The bowl I ordered wasn't exactly what I thought it would be but it was pretty tasty! When I am in the area again, I would love to try more menu items!

Nice little bar to cool off during this unseasonably warm weekend visit! Friendly bartenders, didn't have food. Enjoyed the blue sky kolsch!

Made to Order Guacamole

My husband and I had such GREAT and kind service here! The place was not busy at all, so we were seated right away. It was a hot day, so I wasn't feeling too hungry. I just wanted something cold and refreshing. We ordered guacamole as an appetizer. The guacamole tasted really plain, but I really liked the pita chips. For my entree, I ordered the mixed house salad with a vinaigrette dressing. The grilled chicken was nothing special, but the rest of the salad was refreshing. My husband ordered the Carolina On My Mind burger with a side of fries. I had a few bites of his fries and they were delicious. Carolina Brewery is in a great area downtown in Chapel Hill right near UNC's campus. The area is probably more lively when it's not summer, but I enjoyed our time here. With their great hospitality and fries, I definitely want to come back.

Breakfast burrito

The food here is alright. I had the breakfast burrito, and it was salty but lacked seasoning. The salsa also was underwhelming and bland. Additionally, the bathroom situation here is a disaster. The downstairs bathroom is a mess and the upstairs bathrooms don't have locks.

Leak From Door

Good Food, Good Employees, Great Service and Great Everything. I don't know how to describe this place but perfect, only downside was the leaks from the thunderstorm Pros Good Food Great Employees Great Drinks, Great Atmosphere Respectful People Cons Lot of Leaks from Roof Doors Walls, I was safe to home though

I came here on a Sunday after a night out in the town. The food was delicious and definitely hit the spot. The staff was friendly and attentive. There are TVs lined up everywhere, which made the place definitely look ideal to watch a game or two. I would definitely come back.

In town for the first time Chapel Hills NC. My Son Steven and I decided an early beer sounded good. Don't judge us . We pulled into Carolina Brewery and enjoyed a couple of beers from a surprisingly large beer menu. Our server saying "You All" was extraordinarily nice. We taught her some Minnesotan "You Guys", "Have you been up North", "For Sure", and of course "You betcha". She talked us into a loaded potato Chips that were excellent. Very casual chill environment. It was a fortunate great start to our weekend adventure Gophers vs. UNC!!

Dined at Carolina Brewery recently before a sporting event at UNC. All three of our meals were delicious as were the craft beers.

I loved the music-themed menu concept, it fits the atmosphere so well. It is a little dark and moody. I ordered the Punk Rock Riot (a vodka drink), and my partner got a whiskey drink. Both were excellent. The Friday night vibes were great, and we had a fantastic time sitting at the bar and soaking it all in. The staff were friendly, the atmosphere was welcoming, and it felt like a place where you could easily spend a few hours enjoying good drinks, music, and company. As a bonus, I found out they sell cake too! I didn't try it this time, but it's definitely on my list for the next visit. A patron recommended the strawberry cake. As I say in many of my reviews: I'll be back.

If you're looking for classic or unique craft cocktails, look no further. Atlas Bar rotates their menu seasonally (and then some). I've had summer cocktails, tea inspired cocktails, and recently fall (or Thanksgiving) themed cocktails. There are sweet and not so sweet and even savory choices. Don't be scared away from the more unique cocktails such as the "hot chicken"or the "cornbread." The cornbread cocktail was honey-butter fat-washed mellowcorn, nixta corn liqueur, honey-nixta foam and a quick favorite. The decor is funky and classy at the same time. The bartenders are chill and nice. You can park behind the building or in the lot next to Armadillo Grill (not Carr Mill Mall!). You can order small bites from ACME and all options are delicious.

It was a short walk from our lovely hotel (the Carolina Inn), but started raining when we first walked out the door so we called an uber which was a very short ride. We were seated right after arriving and I had a nice glass of wine and my daughter a diet coke a few minutes later. The menu looked like a sharing type of meal so we opted for: - pork & chive dumplings: yum - spring rolls: tasty, but my stomach (as always) regretted the fried food the next day - bento box: the hit of the meal - shaking beef: i thought pretty good, but my daughter wasn't a huge fan The service was good and the food was brought out at the perfect pace. While I'm sure their dessert is yummy we opted to walk down Franklin street and enjoy some Ben & Jerry's after dinner since the weather had cleared up.

On a recent visit, our family started off with an delicious order of Pork & Chive Dumplings, while I enjoyed a perfectly prepared Old Fashioned from the bar. Service was outstanding throughout our visit, and Lantern's softly lit, intimate setting makes it the perfect spot for a date night or just to escape the Carolina heat. Everything about our visit was wonderful, and the prices were more than reasonable for a meal of this caliber. An amazing find in Chapel Hill!

I got the two empanadas with aside and was able to try both the chicken and the pork. I think I liked the chicken a little bit more, but both of them were very good and the plantains were also very good. Not overly sweet, but also not super dry. I will say the parking is kind of annoying without parking space directly nearby. Had to park in the parking garage across the street. The server was very nice and mindful of waters and when we needed things. I will say almost $20 for a regular dish seemed very expensive but the food was pretty good so I would probably come back - just for the cheaper empanadas as they were pretty filling as it was. The one thing that kind of threw me off was how they set the table with their water cups upside down, touching the table. I wouldn't say that I'm a clean freak, but also that seems kind of gross to me because that's where my mouth is going to be... I'd probably do something different there myself. This definitely is more of a Chapel Hill / Carrboro money type of dining experience $$ but I'd be back on nicer occasions. The pastry on the empanadas were very good. Really liked the yuca Frits as well

The place is quite small, with about five tables, and maybe 12 seats at the bar. We sat at the bar as we only wanted drinks and snack. Christian, the bartender, greeted us right away and brought food and drink menus. He explained the specials and took our drink orders. My companion found an interesting Greek white wine, and I asked for a boulevardier, my go-to cocktail for a new place. The wine was to her liking, and the cocktail was about the best example I've had in recent memory. Christian used Woodford Reserve bourbon and Campari rather than Aperol so it had a slightly less bitter taste and was a lovely auburn color. The food menu was very interesting, with lots of items we've never tried. We ordered caesar salad with anchovies, green beans in garlic-soup sauce, panella (a chick-pea and cream cheese dish), and seasoned French fries. It was all yummy and delivered together. The service we got really couldn't have been much better: attentive without hovering. The food and drink quality was outstanding, and we thought the prices were very reasonable for what we got. In short, thanks Christian, and we'll be back.
