Local 22 reopened outdoor dining recently and I was excited to check it out on a Friday evening. They serve modern American food like pizza and burgers with a Southern flair. When we arrived, we sat at one of their many outdoor tables, spaced comfortably distant from each other adhering to corona guidelines. Starting with drinks, I tried the 4 beer flight for $10 and my friend got the berry fields forever cocktail. The beer flight was great, you get to choose your own and it was very well priced for the amount of beer you get. Later, I also tried the devil made me which was a pineapple and rum base drink which unfortunately I found disappointing. For the food, we started by splitting the cast-iron hush puppies. I really enjoyed these fried corn balls that were served in a cheesy sauce with a slight kick from the jalapeño. For the entree, I got the caesar salad with shrimp addition. It was a decent salad but very heavy on the dressing. The shrimp were very well cooked however. My friend got the margarita pizza which was a large thin crust pizza (certainly big enough to share) with big lumps of mozzarella on a marinara base. She thought it was a pretty decent pizza. Finally, we split a side of the "burnt" brussel sprouts. These I liked quite a bit - they were both sweet and crispy and quite delicious. Overall, we had a very nice time at Local 22. Our waitress did a good job making us feel welcome at the restaurant and the food was solid American and especially enjoyable in this nice outdoor setting. My group had the salmon, a burger and the special pizza. All was absolutely delicious. Along with the skillet cornbread. And then topped it off with the butterscotch bread pudding which was amazing! The dessert was sooo good! Just the most satisfying piece of warm bread pudding on a warm plate. My friends got the ginger cream cake which they said they really enjoyed as well. Pig pops! If the review could be that short it'd be perfect. If you're at Local 22 the pig pops are a must. Go with the cheer wine bbq. I also had the pizza that was on special. My partner and I went here for our 4 yr anniversary, and I have to say it was really good! The Food was fantastic, the ambiance was solid and the service was really good. The nice thing is it wasnt so loud that I couldnt hear anything, one thing that drives me nuts is when I have to yell my order out or whatever. I came here on a hastily scheduled Monday night dinner with friends and was surprised to find that the place was packed. Just now, when I came to write my Yelp review, I was surprised to see that Local 22 is nearly 6 years old - this place has been off my radar the entire 8 years I've lived in Durham! First, the best part: Service was friendly and prompt and attentive, without being overbearing. Even though we were seated outside (see above re: Monday night busy-ness), our water glasses were always topped off and dirty plates were cleared away as soon as we were done eating off of them. The food was good to tasty. My favorite was the hushpuppies - already a winner with their crispy shells and fluffy interiors, and even better with the decadent cheese sauce that they were served in. We also tried the mac and cheese of the day, which came with tasty sausage morsels and a toasted bread crumb topping. The beet salad was fine - standard roasted beets + goat cheese + greens combo - and the grilled chicken that I added had a nice smoky flavor and wasn't dried out like fresh grilled chicken can be. The Tuscan Farmer pizza (pesto, potato, prosciutto) was sort of a meh for me. The pesto made it a big greasy mess, and the potato slices on top were kind of slippery (maybe a little underdone) and lacked the roasted potato flavors I hope for when adding potato to pizza. All told, everything we ordered tasted good, but there was nothing that was so delicious that we'd come back for that dish. I'd be willing to come again and try some other stuff on their menu, but Durham has so many farm-to-table-style restaurants that it may be a while before we get back here to scratch that local gastropub itch. read more

We came to Local 22 for Triangle Restaurant week and LOVED everything we ate here. This was the only restaurant I could find that was actually offering the $15/person Restaurant Week menu instead of only offering the Dinner $30 per person menu on a Saturday. Our waiter gave us thorough and honest suggestions on what to order off of the menu: lentil soup and brussel sprout salad for the 1st course, beef short rib tacos and garden thin crust pizza for the 2nd course, and the chocolate pot de creme and raspberry sorbet for the dessert. The interior is definitely unique--modern industrial/farmhouse/gastropub/European. The restaurant filled up pretty quickly by 1pm but we were seated without a wait; they also have long tables outside when the weather is nice. Now onto the food--the best part of our visit! The lentil soup was delicious, light, and I enjoyed the broth and veggies. The brussel sprout salad had lots of great flavor and red onion scattered throughout, though the raw sprouts took a lot of chewing to swallow (yay for lots of fiber?). The vegetable thin crust pizza blew me away, because I'm usually a meat-all-the-way kind of person when it comes to pizzas, but the pesto sauce and perfectly roasted eggplant/onion/tomato/zucchinis on top tasted AMAZINGLY scrumptious. We had ordered the thin crust because our waiter mentioned how big of a portion it was, and he was right. We ended up bringing home 3 slices of leftover pizza. The beef short rib tacos came on a plate of 2 tacos, with 2 tortillas per taco (so that the filling doesn't fall apart completely). They were good, and the meat was nice and tender, but nothing to call home about. We loved both of the desserts---the chocolate creme that came in a cute little pot. It was light and milky creamy, not overly rich or dense. And the raspberry and lemon sorbet scoops were the perfect way to end the meal; great texture, refreshing, not too icy. I made a reservation for a larger party, I accidentally miscounted (I understand this is my fault) but they were very rude about us asking for an additional chair...calm down it was an honest mistake. We brought a cookie cake in (so low mess, doesn't require extra dishes and cutlery)... it was obviously a birthday party given the large group and cake. After we had already cut the cake, we were informed we would have to pay per slice. We were told very rudely "that's why we have desserts on the menu." The cake was sitting on our table the entire time, so it was interesting they waited until we had already cut it. I understand some restaurants have policies about bringing in cakes, but it was the way it was so rudely communicated. TLDR: food is good, staff is rude. read more

I came here for a business lunch, and besides the issues with finding parking, it was a great visit. The service of our server was great! He was very attentive and kept our glasses filled. I ordered the pork shoulder w/ hop & john. The pork shoulder was tender and tasted great. My lunch partner had the white bean soup which he said was amazing. We both split the deviled eggs which are absolutely to die for. The atmosphere is very relaxing and was perfect for our business lunch because the noise level of the restaurant was fairly low and the tables & seats are very well positioned and spaced out. I was excited to stumble upon Local 22. Great drinks, good food, and fun atmosphere - what else could you ask for? (Parking...) Local 22 is tucked away in the corner of Erwin Square, conveniently located right off of Duke's campus and busy 9th street. It's definitely hard to find, as I got turned around twice, but keep trying and you'll get there! The parking situation is also pretty confusing, as other reviewers have noted. I was lucky to snag a spot right behind the restaurant, where I was sure I could park there, but the spaces can definitely be confusing. I think that if you are cognizant of the parking signs and any potential time limits, you should be fine. Service is wonderful and the servers are happy to offer suggestions. The drinks are by far the star here - order off of the extensive whiskey list, or go for one of the cocktails. You can't go wrong! The menu here is also pretty great, and I love to see all of the local fare. I didn't think the food was outstanding, but it was good and did the job. I would highly recommend you stop by for drinks with friends or any other social setting. I will definitely be open to coming back! read more

Got to Durham late on a Friday, celebrating a birthday. Was looking for a spot I could reserve that got good reviews. Came across this place. Arrived and was immediately seated, glad we reserved. Waiter was very attentive and food came out quick. Had an extensive drink selection and tried a couple of there specials. Definitely made with fresh ingredients. Was very happy with the meal which was kind of a sampler, Mahi bites, class with bread and the lamb burger. Couldn't decide what was better. Looking forward to trying additional items next trip. Great spot for crafted cocktails and comfort food with a local twist. Tucked in the corner of Erwin Square, this is a great location for sitting in the cute outdoor seating area and people-watching. Prices are a little high, but it's to be expected for a trendy place in a high-traffic area close to Duke's campus. If you are a bourbon or whiskey drinker, the selection is decent here. The food is very good and comes out of the kitchen pretty quickly. It's hard to find healthy options on the menu, but the quinoa salad and black bean burger are both delicious options. Local 22 is located in a plaza that appears to be in the middle of nowhere and can be confusing to find. Parking is limited and fills up quickly. The restaurant itself is located right on the corner of the plaza. Semi-fancy atmosphere. Once you walk past the bar area, you'll notice a giant chalkboard that takes up an entire wall, full of the daily specials. One of the daily specials was Mac & Cheese: Ham and Cheddar, $7. Very rich and cheesy, in a good way. Fairly large chunks of ham, considering the portion size. Serving/eating spoon needs to be smaller; it just makes the portion size look even smaller than it already is. Bull City BBQ Pork Pops - 2 small, very tender pieces of pork butt, $8. The meat practically falls off the bone. Prosciutto Flatbread - Baby arugula, house-made mozzarella, farm tomatoes, pesto, and prosciutto on a flatbread for $15. 4 slices and fresh, but only mediocre in taste. Hush Puppies of the Day - I was disappointed by these 5 little balls of Pastrami Pepper and Cheddar, $8. They look like baked meatballs, dipped in cheese. Pastrami flavor isn't too obvious. Sweet Potato Waffle Fries with Choice of Dip (Sriracha Aioli), $6. Fun to eat, mostly because of their crisscrossed pattern. The thickness is also perfect. Couldn't really taste the Sriracha in the dip, but it was still good. Overall, the food is okay, but the portions are small. Granted, my group ordered several small plates to share, but there's barely anything to share. The flatbread was much smaller than we expected. Upon a quick glance around the room, even the entrees don't look like much. Not incredibly impressed by this place, especially considering the price of the menu items. read more

I had a good experience here. Kind of a hidden location behind Parizade. Waiters and waitresses were very friendly in handling our reservation. We were seated, ordered, and received our food promptly. I had intended to come here for restaurant week lunch but apparently on weekends they only do brunch. Their brunch menu is not very big. They have a selection of like 3 burgers, 2 sandwiches, some salads, one omelette, etc. Fun fact is their drinks menu is larger than their food menu. humph. I ordered the salmon nicoise at $12 which is reasonable. Portions were okay. Eggs were good and smoked salmon was tasty. Salad dressing was it seemed probably just lemon juice and vinegar but I guess that's a healthy way to go. Would come again. No sparks of love but it was a solid place. I would love to try their regular lunch sometime and see how that is. read more

Went to this restaurant to get food for my husband who was released from the hospital. He had been eating hospital food and wanted something more substantial. He went to the website and wanted the shrimp and grits. I realized upon going there their lunch menu didn't include that item. I explained this to the server and he said "no problem" and they would be happy to make it for him. I was so pleased with their response and thankful for their flexibility. A really good place to go in Durham if you want all types of southern food options in a slightly fancier, sit-down setting (with a bar and fancier menu compared to Foster's). I also really like Local 22 because they take large group reservations and it's pretty affordable for large groups because each meal is priced very reasonably. I've been here a few times, but I went for my graduation/Mother's day brunch and it was great! I was a little worried because that weekend was super crowded and my 2 year old nephew also came and sometimes he can be a little troublesome. But, the staff was super nice and helpful. We ordered the pimento cheese plate and biscuits and gravy to start. They were both delicious, and I'd definitely order both again! I then ordered the chicken and waffles for my main entree, which was good, but no comparison to Dame's. Finally, my family had bought me a cake, and they were kind enough to cut the cake for us and serve it to each of us (though they charge a cake fee for this). Delish! -side note: cheese sauce comes out the temperature of lava. Then the 24 hour beer brined chicken dinner- great flavor in this chicken. Cooked beautifully and served HOT. So glad we found this place for dinner! The menu had a decent number of vegetarian options which is what got us through the door. We sat at the bar and ordered ourselves a flight of all local beers. They were all amazing! The wide variety of beers here will accommodate any palate. The charcuterie board had a "veggie options" which gave us 3 types of cheeses, a small salad in the middle and amazing bread. Oh! It also had the most delicious deviled egg on it. (It's ok the menu as a stand alone and I highly recommend if you're in to them.) There was a substantial amount of food on this board and could easily be shared by 3 people. (Ask for extra stone ground mustard- it's amazing!) We then decided to split a veggie burger (that's made in house). They even cut in in half and plated it separately for us! There was plentiful fries too! The burger was amazing! We added pimento cheese to it which took it to a whole another level. The cheese is spicy and creamy. We opted for a side of marinated beets too which were just what the doctor ordered. They were no nonsense beets tossed in a Dijon dressing. (Just like I make at home!)
