Quite possibly the best workout I've had this year. It wasn't strenuous, nor did I overexert myself. I left feeling like I had a great workout out, and a great stretch, and it was an amazing feeling. So far I've been once to the intro class for Aerial Yoga. O.M.G. Finally a healthy addiction! Ha! No really though. I'm hooked. First of all, about the studio: very cool vibe, super high ceilings, modern but inviting decor and clearly a place where folks can also bring their kids (they have a play area and they offer kid-specific classes). Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. I felt comfortable right away and safe with the teacher who really knew her stuff and clearly loved teaching us. For the beginners intro class we had a full house - each "silk" was occupied and apparently quite a few on a waiting list so sign up in advance! It was a fun group of women of all ages, everyone was having a good time, laughing and getting more gutsy as the class went on. After class the staff took photos of us hanging in cool positions, served us wine and nibbles. Great Friday night. And super affordable. The days after....sore? Yes, but not too bad. We spent time really learning fundamentals, so it was not as intense as their regular classes. That said, I was still a bit sore and can tell it will be awesome for strength training. Oh! Best part - at the end of class you literally get wrapped up into a silk "cocoon" suspended from the ceiling and close your eyes just like savasana in a traditional yoga class but way cooler. Stand up. Close your eyes. Keep them closed. Losing your balance? Now try doing that while balancing on one foot. Don't fall. Want more? Stretch your leg out and point your arms in the opposite direction to your outstretched leg. Or point all three limbs in the same direction while balancing. Not down. That's cheating. Yoga has been a source where I can find balance when life feels out of sync - and be able to do moves like the one I just described without falling. And given that most often, all I need is a clean patch of land to be able to practice, it's the easiest 10 minutes I can devote to myself each day to be a little more centered before tackling the world (that's, of course, aside from pre-wake-up tackling by the kids). Of recent, I've been losing my balance. So when Local Motion opened up in my hood, I had to go check it out. Not only are the interiors peacefully elegant (double thumbs up from me!), my yoga class Thursday morning with Tina both relaxed me and energized me, a reminder of what yoga does for my psyche so that I can tackle the world. Or for those muscles that somehow, my 3 mile runs and daily workouts seem to have completely neglected. Or for my recentering. Sore muscles aside, this studio and its classes keeps in mind not one, but all. Check this - while I haven't yet tried it, this studio boasts a childcare room, where your 6-month-old to 8-year-old child can play while you find your om. Imagine being able to attend a fitness class AND be able to have your kids nearby, or not having to juggle schedules to find childcare during the class - it's like having the proverbial cake and eating it too for us parents! And Local Motion even boasts classes geared towards children's active being and parents learning to exercise WITH their children. Novel concepts, eh? Other things to keep in mind when visiting: make sure to visit the website to see updates on classes you'd like to take. The studio is walkable from the King Street metro, and it even has its own parking lot so you don't have to stress about finding parking if you're driving. For the time being, I'm going to let my sore muscles rest a bit - but I'm so looking forward to visiting the studio again to find my om. Just don't tell my muscles. Great little studio! They have childcare, which is unheard of. The childcare space is bright and clean with lots of toys. I take solace in the fact that the childcare staff take classes at the studio and they have the same two women each week. They will also come get you if your little one just isn't having it. The classes themselves are great. I've taken both yoga and the cardio sculpt. They offer Pilates, a barre class, Capoeria and belly dancing as well. Yoga is nicely paced and cardio sculpt is not for the faint of heart. Cost is on par with other studios in the area, maybe a little cheaper. Unlimited with Childcare is $135/month and without childcare it's $120. Not awful. Right now there is a New Student special going $50 for a month of unlimited classes. They have classes for the wee ones too. We tried a free creative movement class but my then almost 2 year old just couldn't control his impulses and kept melting down when they moved on to a different activity from the one he liked. I would probably recommend them for ages 2.5 and up. Parking is in the lot right in front of the studio. It is free and abundant, score! Parking has historically been a deterrent in my attending classes at other studios in the area. I don't want to pay $18 for a class and an additional $4-$6 in crappy Old Town street parking. That's a no go. So definitely check them out. read more

I went to the intro to Aerial Yoga workshop and I love it. However, I am already committed to other studios at the moment, but I will definitely revisit this later. The studio is spacious and clean. The parking was easy too. The cost of Aerial Yoga here is definitely cheaper than Spark Yoga in Arlington. They also offer $50 1 month unlimited classes for new student. My instructor was very nice and hands on. Aerial yoga is not easy at all and you can put your body in an uncomfortable position at times. She was very helpful throughout the whole class, taught us the seven foundation of aerial yoga and offered to take pics of us afterward. read more

Just purchased a couple tickets for the aerial/antigravity yoga. After checking the studio out in person and speaking to several instructors, Without hesitations signed myself and a friend up for the anti gravity intro course. Really it was meant to be primarily a gift for another, but now I'm excited too. Granted I'll probably still be a handful for the instructor but I no longer feel like it's just for my friend. This is one of my favorite places, because: 1. The atmosphere is open, warm, and comfortable, and the owner, Sara, has a very contagious, enthusiastic attitude and obviously loves what she does and all that she has to offer. 2. There are a variety of classes and workshops conducted by knowledgable instructors - interesting, serious, and fun - something for everyone. 3. Child care is available during most adult classes. 4. My 5 year old daughter is crazy about the place, has taken as many creative movement classes as she can, has enjoyed 3 summer camps, and is even hosting her birthday party there. Sometimes you just want to get your om on, and sometimes you want to work it. Simply put, a body in motion stays in motion, and a body at rest stays at rest. Local motion studio is a darling studio that lets you do the former at ease. The studio is brand new, clean, and beautiful. There is ample free parking, a changing area, and they offer childcare for those who need it. While I don't have children, I did have to walk through there one time after a late night class ended in order to leave, and the childcare area was spotless. There are a wide array of classes offered with some of the best teachers that I've taken in the DMV. Jess (although now out/gone on maternity leave), and Jennifer P. are my standout faves. They have teachers who are more fitness based, and teachers who are more easy-going, and there to guide you through your practice. As this is not a yoga studio per se, they also offer ballet (although not barre classes such as pure barre/barre method/etc unfortunately), pilates, capoiera, children's classes, and various unique workshops. Similarly, since they aren't a yoga studio per se, they don't offer yoga every night. Which is the primary reason I ended up not joining. I need at least the option of a yoga class on most weeknights, and it seems whenever I wanted to go- there wasn't a class offered that weeknight! My only other critique is that the lights are really bright. I'm not light sensitve by any means, but it can be a bit jarring with those overhead lights shining directly in your eye in various yoga poses. Oh well, it wasn't a deal breaker. This studio is fantastic! Not only is this a clean, beautiful, modern space, but the instructors are great. I take a ballet class there once a week and just love the teacher! She's kind, takes time to explain everything, and I always feel very rejuvenated after one of her classes. The core and restore class is a great mix of Pilates and other ab work. I have been to Local Motion Studio for 2 years now. Have been very happy with it. I have enjoyed all the classes. I especially appreciate the emphasis on getting the posture right instead of just going through the movements. Owner Sara has been very accommodating and flexible when I injured myself and could not use all my class pass before it expired. This is also the only studio in the area that offers childcare (for some of the classes) at a very affordable price. My 3yo son begs me to take him to the "yoga studio" all the time. This is by far the best studio I've ever been too. The instructors are super friendly and helpful. Sara the owner is great in explaining everything. They make working out a lot of fun. I love my workouts and I have never said that ever before. All the classes are a little different and are great in their own way. The cardio sculpt with Charrissa is out of this world. I found out about the studio from online deals. I ended up buying a 5-class pack for a good deal through LivingSocial. If you don't use a deal through one of these deal websites (usually for first-time students to the studio), then there is also an unlimited first month deal through the studio ($50 for first-time students), otherwise there are different rates for buying packages of classes or drop-ins or whatever else. I have gone to a few yoga and Pilates classes here on Saturdays or Sundays with each class having a different teacher, so I have more of an idea about usual instructors, possible substitutes, and the general feel of some classes. The studio is really convenient for me since it is less than a mile from my apartment, so it is a quick and easy walk or drive to class. There is also a good amount of free parking if I do choose to drive. I enjoyed each of the teachers and classes I attended. Instructors and fellow students are all very friendly and kind. The environment here is very welcoming for people at all skill levels, which makes it helpful to focus on myself and feel comfortable working around others (I normally practice alone by memory of positions or alone with videos). I recommend this studio to anyone in the area looking for a great yoga-Barre-Pilates-dance-etc. spot. The studio is cute with a lot of amenities (child care for a fee on certain days, mats and equipment/props to borrow for free) and teachers who are great at what they do. read more
