I love stopping by local pig and grabbing any of their products to make a fantastic dinner. They have a wide array of products. They have all sorts of meat from beef to chicken and even sometimes rabbit. They also have eggs of different varieties including duck and turkey. They also have cheeses and charcuterie items. They have lots of pickled items. And even premade meals like pot pies, breakfast burritos, mac & cheese, and the last time I was in a stroganoff. In addition to food, they also have a few drink options like bottles of wine and beer. They even have dog food and dog treats. The store itself is decent sized. There's plenty of space for a few people to move around. They do have a large deli counter and a few coolers full of goodness. Service is always excellent. They are always helpful and can even offer suggestions if you don't know what to make with what. One of my go-tos are any one of their sausages. They have traditional ones plus a few fun ones. And if you watch their social media, they'll usually tell you when they have a limited addition one. The Rieger whiskey and apple sausage is one of my favorites. They also have a chicken curry sausage, which is excellent and has so much curry flavor. On my last visit I noticed that they have mac & cheese that you can take to go. They have a few different varieties, but I went with one with bacon because their bacon is always fantastic. It was a really good side. I slapped it on the grill to warm it up and it was delicious. I've been a loyal patron for over 10 years. Local pig is the best butcher/ sausage shop I've ever been too. Local pig works with farmers and the animals are butchered in the lower level. Thier house made sausages are flavorful and make great appetizers, ingredients, or can stand on thier own or in a bun. The mini pot pies are fantastic. Their meat selection is awesome and they can easily adapt to any request. Local pig/ Pigwhich moved to city market from the East bottoms over 5 years ago and expanded thier Local items to include cheese, wine, liquor, and a ton of other stuff. First of all I love the City Market and most if not all the places around there are really nice. I went to the Local Pig because they carry one of my favorite wines. Swirl. But they also have the freshest meat! Everything is right there so you can see it and there is always someone nice there to answer any questions you have. And if you want to try the meat right away all you have to do is go right next door to the Pigwich! All of there meat is prepared fresh from the Local Pig! You can't lose. read more

This review is for their charcuterie class. It seems like the limit is about 10 students in a session which was reasonable. The space was a little small, but everyone got a chance to do something and participate if they wanted to. We didn't take home all the stuff we helped with, but got variations of already-prepped options instead. It's not an individual class; rather, you help out with different steps of different processes. Brining ham, making the cures for the bacon/pork belly, and preparing and stuffing the sausages were all included. The head butcher, Jordan, was great at answering our questions and everyone had a chance to try a part of the processes. Lunch (from the Pigwich restaurant) and beverages were included, which was really nice. When I signed up for the class online it was about $85. For $85 you get the class, the option to participate, lunch and drinks, and you walk away with about $30 worth of meat a person, if not more. Definitely worth signing up for! I pop in whenever I'm in the area. Love local butcher shops! What I also like about this place is that they stock a lot of products from small businesses. I enjoy browsing and picking up items to bring home for friends and family. Today I bought the peppered bacon which we really enjoy, bourbon jalapeño bacon, rosemary garlic sausage, smoked whole chicken, beef pot pies pepper jelly, Campbell Gardens Candied pickles and Serrano hot sauce. I try to buy something new to try. The last time I was here, a gentleman came in and bought 2 bottles of Serrano Hot sauce because he tried it when Local Pig had a pop up and absolutely loved it. I buy Campbell Gardens' pickled Jalapeños and pickles here because they are never at the Farmer's Market whenever I am there. I appreciate that the butcher took the time to hand write heating directions on the wrapper of my pot roast pot pies! They are smallish, but very filling. That's great customer service in my book!!! First time I've ever visited the store, was looking for an obscure item they didn't have, but the guy was so nice and helpful that I hated to leave without buying something. On his recommendation, I took home two of the sloppy Jo pot pies, mostly because that's a combo of my husband's two favorite food groups, and also I was intrigued by the weirdness of it. Well, these were for dinner tonight and I couldn't believe how good they were! More like a meat pie, with the flakiest most delicate pastry and the sloppy Jo meat filling was an elevated and delicious version that had no relation to the goopy manwich version. I'll gladly be back next time I'm at the market for more of these and some other items- their butcher case was well stocked with great looking meats, sausages, etc., and from their reputation, everything's good. read more

I absolutely love the new location! It's so fun to walk inside this butcher shop. It makes you feel like your stepping back in time. They carry a large selection of steaks, sausages, pork, lamb, eggs, cheese, butter, jams, etc. I love the local aspect of it. This spot is located right in Historic city market. We stopped in because we had a little bit of time before our flight home from the airport and decided that we must have some barbecue. The front of this building is actually a deli/butcher/make it your self kind of spot which was amazing but we were pointed to the back where we could find some lunch. The menu is small but has lots of great options. We ordered two different sandwiches just to get a variety and both of them were excellent. I was excited to see they also have several different unique beers and bottles of wine. I have always enjoyed stopping in at the Local Pig after visiting their sister operation Pigwich at the old location in the east bottoms and especially now that they are in the City Market. I usually only purchase an item or two, normally burgers or brats for grilling. This weekend, I took advantage of their curbside pick-up due to Covid-19 and ordered several bundles of meats and some jars of side items. I love the idea of local meat, I love the idea of humane treatment during an animal's life, and I love the idea of Local Pig. However, sometimes the ideas don't meet reality. I must say, I have experimented with several meats from Local Pig and, to my surprise, I am not as crazy about them as I want to be. With the bacon, it always looks so good, but the last 2 pounds I have purchased have been 85% thick white fat. The same goes for the bacon burger, that shriveled up when cooked and was truly just bacon ground up like a burger instead of a good mix of beef/bacon. However, their events are awesome, the sausages are good, and the location is a fun experience to track down. I still like Local Pig, or at least I still like the idea of it. (Other highly recommended carnivore options: McGonigles Market and Steve's Meat Market in DeSoto KS) read more

I'll keep this one short and sweet... quite literally. Matt E took me to this adorable butcher shop to pick up some local honey when I was in town visiting last week. Yes, I admit, it's kind of ironic that I bought honey in honor of the Jewish New Year at a place called "Local Pig," but honey is honey, and I needed some for my honeys at home! Not only does The Local Pig carry a variety of local honeys to choose from, (I went with the traditional one), but as the name implies, they also sell all kinds of organic and local steaks, roasts, chops, sausages, burgers, charcuterie, and more. I was tempted to buy a ton more than just honey, as everything in the shop looked amazing, but I wasn't prepared to travel with any additional purchases. If I lived locally, I imagine I'd be a frequent customer of Local Pig... but unless they open another store in Phoenix, I'll have to live vicariously through all of you that can go as often as you like... and until my next visit to KC, I'll just be home enjoying my honey! read more

I'd honestly give a zero star review if possible. I ordered a ham for Easter 3 weeks in advance after seeing a promotion on their website about their Easter offerings. I was sent an email stating "we are sorry to inform you that our butcher sliced up the large hams for Easter" only a few days before Easter. How does a butcher shop slice up every ham for Easter? The only remedy to the situation was a 2# ham in its place. Still waiting on a refund. I've worked in the food & beverage industry for 20+ years & have worked with hundreds of vendors. I have been checking out Local Pig for years now (I'm a huge fan of the breakfast pot pie and bratwursts), but just recently experienced one of their classes. Before the two hour class got started, we learned the history of the shop and enjoy some food from PigWich. Along with 15 other meat enthusiasts, I learned everything a gal would want to know about making charcuterie. From preparing pork belly to become miso maple bacon to brining a ham to stuffing pepperoni, I felt like a butcher for the day. This hands-on class was an awesome peek into the world of butchery and a local business I love. The instructor was funny and has a deep passion for his craft. One of the best parts, every participant walked away with recipes and about 10 lbs of meat to take home including bacon, pate, pepperoni, and a ham. Local Pig is a charcuterie just opened by chef Alex Pope, formerly of R Bar and the American. It the kind of "butcher shop" that any foodie would love to have around the corner. The cooler displays cuts of meat that you won't find in the local supermarket, but very much like you would be served in the better fine dining establishments in the area. I took away a box filled with sausages, some small jars of stock reductions and a jar of pork with brie rillett (think pate). I haven't tried everything yet, but what I have eaten is wonderful. The location is in the East Bottoms, just off Chestnut Ave., near Knuckleheads. I learned the building used to house a Postal Station; it's just across the street from the Heim Brewery firehouse building, built in the late 1800's, which was in use until 1965. read more

Well, I wanted my 500th review to be for a ridiculously amazing business, and I think Local Pig fits the bill. Here we go! GET THEE TO LOCAL PIG! This East Bottoms shrine to swine (and many other varieties of tasty animal flesh) is a carnivore's dream come true. I love browsing the two cases and letting my stomach make my shopping decisions for me. I've picked up amazing sausages, ground lamb, ridiculously thick chops and who-knows what else. While the prices aren't rock bottom, I didn't get any sense of sticker shock like I had expected. Nope, this place serves a humane (in the sense that any dead animal can be humane), locally sourced product at a fair price. What's not to like about that? One of my favorite things about Local Pig are their butchers boxes. Coming in 7lb and 10lb varieties, these boxes can be purchased either weekly or biweekly. It's like christmas, untying the butcher's twine and seeing what delicious morsels await inside. We eat a LOT of meat (paleo diet FTW!) and this keeps us out of our rut. It's fun to have your protein decisions made for you, and then building a meal around that. It's like a low-pressure version of Iron Chef or Chopped. There's typically an "adventurous" inclusion, so this might not be the best option for the squeamish. What's more, this place has a variety of meat-themed classes. Everything from butchering basics to sausage making, these people want to not only feed you but educate you! They seem intent on raising the culinary bar here in KC, no matter how they do it. On top of the product, the store is great in and of itself. It's decidedly old school, with an aesthetic that my regular readers will know that I love. I'm not sure how old the building is, but they respect the history in the design. Lots of old wood and chalkboards and such. I just enjoy being in this space. Always a great experience! Gone on several occasions for dinner and always get tempered to try the daily special and it had yet to disappoint. If the daily special doesn't ticket your fancy on your visit I recommend the "pig witch" a pork patty sandwich with slaw. There are going to be moving from this location around the first of the year which is unfortunate because currently it's close to where I work. If you haven't tried them go for it and also take home some fresh meat from their butcher. read more

I love this place! Great meats and their attached restaurant is stellar (i miss some of the stuff from the old menu but their food has gotten even better since the move). Any time I need high quality meats, lunch meats, or something for a special occasion this is my go to. That said, while I do love this place there was some turnover either before or after the move to the river market and the quality of service from the new hires is pretty poor in comparison. Some are bordering on rude, whereas others have no desire to help beyond getting stuff out of the case. The old employees were knowledgeable, helpful, and had no issue breaking out the grinder to make you some fresh ground chicken or pork. Sadly I can only give them 4 stars now, but hope to be able to bump it up in the future. read more

Guess what? The Local Pig Charcuterie will be providing sausages for Haus. With this news, my brother traipsed over to the Local Pig for some meat. They have an amazing selection which has already been addressed by several yelpers. We picked up lardo (began curing before they opened, cured for 30 days), guanciale (one website describes this as magical Roman bacon), cardamom bacon, and several sausages including the roasted garlic and rosemary, buffalo chicken, lamb and feta, and sage and star anise. I cannot wait to sample these products. Why wait you ask? Well, if only it wasn't Good Friday. Other things I like about Local Pig includes their building, the fact I get to see people sawing and preparing meats, the iPad checkout system (using Square Up, I think), scratch 'n sniff stickers, old school scale. Butchers shops are probably not a popular vacation destination but rather you're from KC or from out of town, do yourself a favor and check out this awesome butcher shop in the East Bottoms. Local Pig is relatively new to the scene and dare I say, helped start the rise of 'fashionable' butcher shops in the KC area. We're in the Midwest after all, so why wouldn't we buy our meats in trendy places? But Local Pig is much more than just a shop. In their relatively short time on the major scene, they have produced a fantastic food truck, see Pigwich, built in a covered patio area for snacking and hanging out with friends, and partnered with Yelp for an awesome Yelp Elite picnic. (not that I'm biased or anything) So much more than a butcher shop, Local Pig has friendly staff that can help answer questions about how much meat you should buy for what you're making (with just one person it is hard to figure out how much to buy sometimes!) and they even offer classes on making your own sausage! Their attention to detail is superb and I love their packaging. It's simple, a cardboard box tied with twine and their sticker in the corner, but it's so cute. No more of the wrapped in paper with a price tag slapped on the front like at the grocery store, these guys put some though into their presentation. Now, if the thought of walking into a place with a cooler full of meat and a line forming around you gives you anxiety, fear not! They have menus and chalkboards around with prices and information and there is no pressure for you to hurry. With honeys, spices, breads, LP memorabilia, eggs, and other non-meat products available, even if you wouldn't classify yourself as a meat eater, there is a reason to go and lots to look at to help inspire you on what to buy if you are a carnivore, like me. What would I suggest? Try the Verde Chorizo!! Honestly, I have other products here, and they are high quality and delicious, but if you have less than $5 and want to experiment in the kitchen, shake up your routine and try this dish with it's slight Chorizo spice but prepared with Roasted Almonds to bring a nutty quality, this is a unique and new flavor. I could rant on because I really enjoy my visits to the Local Pig but I'll let you stop reading so you can see for yourself. THE ONLY MEAT I WANT! I feel like a kid in a candy store every time I walk in. I've been making the trip about once a week for the last year. I am a bi-weekly butcher's box recipient so I get there at least twice a month. If you've never been before, try the bacon first. Next, try any sausage. Then coppa. I'm a sucker for any of their bacon varieties and I always buy at least a pound. I usually cook this in the oven for about 15 or so minutes at 400. The fat renders nicely and it brings just the right amount of crispy goodness. SAVE THE FAT! There is definitely something special about eating meat from animals that have been treated well. Make sure you avoid peak hours because it is extremely popular right now and the line can be long, BUT WORTH THE WAIT. The falafel (yay for veggies) burger is fantastic and both types of fries are killer. All of my lovely meat eating friends had high remarks for the pork sandwiches!
