I recently discovered Krizman's Sausage because it was a stop on the new KCK Legacy Trail. The audio portion of this particular stop traces the history of the meat packing industry in KCK in general and the history of Krizman's specifically. I highly recommend downloading the app and taking a listen. I knew that I was going to love the place before setting inside or taking a bite. With it's 85 year storied history and 3 generations of family running the business, you know something is working in their favor. As soon as I entered the retail storefront, I could smell the smoked sausages in the glass counter I bought 1 link of andouille and 3 links of the smoked Polish sausage. Not only is there a wide variety of house made sausages, but plenty of side items, spices, rubs, sauces, specialty desserts, and even t-shirts and hats. Make sure you check out all the history and framed articles on the wall before leaving. My partner loves blood sausage so every time I am in KC and on my way back home to him I stop by to pick him up a half dozen. My good friend had just moved into her new home so I thought to myself, can there be a better housewarming gift than sausage? Who doesn't love sausages? I had heard tales of this magical place but had never been there and was somewhat in the neighborhood so I thought I'd stop by. I'm so happy that I did. I was a total newbie so I watched a few people order and then talked to the staff. I honestly didn't realize how many different types of sausages there are. They have a nice selection and are more than willing to walk you through the selection process. I ended up with the BBQ sausage for my friend and myself plus I bought some breakfast sausage for my home. Sorry nameless friend, none for you. They were both delicious. I really enjoyed the BBQ sausage to the fullest. I plan to get back down there to get more before the holiday. I am most definitely a fan and will be back. read more

This place, although very close to work has been on my To-Do list for quite some time. I think sometimes I put off visiting places I really want to try because I'm afraid of being disappointed. I WASN'T DISAPPOINTED. We didn't want to go too overboard on our first visit, so we just grabbed a couple of pounds of Polish that'd just come out of the smoker. It was hard not to just order 2 pounds of everything, but I resisted. You really drive home fast when something in your car smells that delicious! We enjoyed every morsel of that sausage and are already trying to decide what we'll try next. I do like "chunky" ground sausage, there were a couple of pretty huge chunks of fat that I found myself sort of wishing went through the grinder one more time, but still I say that's part of being so HOMEMADE and wouldn't let that stop me from wanting more. read more

1st time in didn't know quite what to try. Two guys behind the counter were very helpful and recommended the bbq roll and I got some fresh polish. Had a little of each on the grill this week. Well well, aren't we all a slut for what Bourdain calls "Meat in tube form"? I know I am definitely a sausage slut (Don't get any ideas you know what the heck I mean) let's just say this is the Playboy mansion of sausage here in Kansas City. And let me tell you it finally, FINALLY the one place that actually makes REAL andouille sausage. Is it better than the stuff in Louisiana? Never. But it is indeed the right interpretation. Coarse pork slammed in garlic, onions, pepper and paprika. NOT spicy as everyone and their pet bull mastiff will try to convince you. Take this stuff and smoke it. Chop it all up and throw it in your pot of red beans or anything you add sausage to. It is indeed, sausage at it's best. Let me say that their knackwurst has a slightly gamey side to it (It is probably the most authentic knackwurst in the metro) but it's a bit too strong for my taste. I much prefer Werner's store made knackwurst. There is also what they call a BBQ sausage that a friend swore that I needed to buy. I did grill it up, but since it was a much thicker hunk of meat than I expected, I was not able to cook it to my standard, thus I really can't give a 100% opinion on how it taste. My friend did mention though that is highly recommended for smoking as opposed to grilling it. Anyway, in conclusion, all I got to say is don't be afraid of the hood the place is in. I just had a meal of Krizman's polish sausage along with its house-made sauerkraut. Delicious! The sausage was well seasoned and had a nice casing on it. The store sells to quite a few restaurants. So, if you see it as an option (it may just say sausage made in Strawberry Hill ... because that may sound a lot more romantic or something), give it a try but it is completely worth the trip to Strawberry Hill to pick up Krizman's sausage. As mentioned, in addition to sausage, the store sells sauerkraut made in the store. It's got a bit of a bite to it. I enjoyed it. But I could see it being somewhat overwhelming. Cooking it with potatoes may cut down on the intensity. We also picked up a loaf of povitica bread, which is friggin' delicious. Thumbs up! So good! read more

When I say that Krizman's has amazing sausages you better believe that I do not say that lightly or without a lot of experience. For a recent crawfish boil I wanted to cook off some sausages for people to snack on while the rest of the food was cooking away. I ordered roughly 10 pounds of smoked polish, 15 pounds of mild Italian, and 15 pounds of bratwurst. All told left with a lot of sausage and a smile on my face. The Italian and Bratwurst are made fresh and vacuum sealed and then flash frozen for freshness. The smoked polish is kept refrigerated but not frozen, they recommend that you simmer in water before serving. The day of the party I got everything rolling and started to cook off the Italian and Bratwurst first. I was amazed at how little was lost during the cooking process and also how evenly they cooked. I sliced them diagonally and in half and put them on the buffet. Like moths to a flame the sausages went extremely quickly and everyone was asking where I got them. I waited to cook the smoked polish off because I didn't want everything to go so quickly. Once i started cooking I had a line in front of the grilled and a lot of hungry eyes looking at me. Once done I barely had them on the table and they were gone. People were picking them up with two fingers and treating them like finger food. Overall an amazing experience, the staff is very friendly and accommodating. Forget everything else in KC when it comes to sausage and come to Krizman's read more

This place is the best. In my neighborhood, historic Strawberry Hill. An independently owned butcher that makes the best kielbasa, andouille, chorizo, if it's sausage, they probably have it. I was in the wholesale meat business for over 10 years and whenever I was asked about Polish sausage ( I carried one brand) but I always recomended Grisnik's (now Krisman's) on Strawberry Hill. No other polish sausage compares to the *quality - *taste - *aroma and consistity . . . . . and you will be amazed at the low price. They also make many other types of sausage, my favorite other is BBQ. Quick story, my Mother-in-law (born and raised on Strawberr Hill) always served it boiled, a few years ago she attended a family get together at my daughter's where the Polish Sausage was cooked in the oven (to give it a crispy casing) and she was sold . . . . . after eating it boiled for over 70 years ! Well worth the trip if you live in the Metro area, or as you have read, they will be happy to send it to you. I go out of my way to grab sausage from Krizmans to smoke at home. They make and sell the local BBQ places sausage. It is delicious!

While I make my own sausages, I prefer to go to Krizman's for their authentic interpretations of polish sausages. Today I walked out of there with over 10 pounds of their product. Honestly, I have never had anything bad there. The major BBQ restaurants in town get their sausage from there, if it tells you something. But if you want sausage, this is a good place to check out. A lot of restaurants buy their sausage here. Among the sausages I've tried, I have no complaints on any of them. We buy our BBQ competition sausage here and it's the best we've found in KC. The BBQ and BBQ hot are great on the grill. If you are wanting to throw some on the smoker, ask for the un-cured Polish. Wow! We went to Krizman's for the first time this weekend. I am so sad that we waited this long! We bought the knackwurst, smoked polish and apple plus the povitica (walnut) bread and homemade sauerkraut. The sausages are the very best in Kansas City and possibly even the. Best I've ever had. The povitica was even better than Dean and Deluca's. The sauerkraut was good, but lost some of it's flavor when cooked. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We will be back and soon!
