Yeah, well it closed down but No Shop has risen through Thrift Towns ashes and the legacy of vintage lives on. The staff is exceptionally stellar!!!!!!!!!! They were so nice to me, gently letting me know that my YSL bag was a counterfeit, to educating me on why a diamond studded red velvet dress is a hard sale in the middle of summer. They don't take brands you are familiar with, but I did see some Nautica and American Apparel in there...but for the most part no H&M, Forever 21, Hollister, Abercrombie, zara etc. Beautiful collection of vintage clothes, from a Jacqueline Onassis inspired pink dress to a Save the Earth vintage denim jacket, and a planet on it's back studded with sequins. I had an experience very similar to another reviewer's: two female staff closely followed me around…read morethe store and hovered near me while pretending to adjust racks. When I paid by credit card, I was asked for ID and told that "credit card thefts are very common here." I have lived in the U.S. for years and never get asked for ID for ordinary retail purchases, so in the context of being watched throughout the store, this felt like racial profiling rather than a neutral store policy. What made the experience especially upsetting was the contrast between the store's self-presentation and how I was treated. This is a vintage/counterculture-looking space in San Francisco, with a sign at the entrance advertising itself as the city's "No. 1" vintage store, yet I was made to feel like a risk object rather than a customer. I did not feel welcome or trusted as a non-white customer, and I would not feel comfortable returning.

The email experience was excellent, and since it's the way so many of us conduct business now, it left at outstanding first impression. When I arrived at the store I was absolutely in awe at the merchandise. The store is incredibly tiny, but that doesn't stop it from having great things, yet still have plenty of room to move about. Everything in the store, and I mean EVERYTHING, works together in an amazing way. It's very well curated, and there was so much I wanted to just buy and bring home. Another great side note, while the store doesn't stock or sell "cheap" things, the prices are very reasonable for the high-end, ultra-quality items they sell. I'll be keeping my eye on this place and will most certainly pick up more things in the future.

Then I remembered the antique shop near my old apartment, the one run by such lovely people with an amazing eye for beautiful pieces. So I went there, hoping to get lucky. As soon as I walked in, I saw many lovely mirrors, but none that matched the one I'd been imagining. Just then, Howard asked if I was looking for something specific. I told him about the mirror I'd been dreaming of, and he smiled and said, "I just bought one like that." He showed me a photo on his phone, and it was the one. He told me it would arrive on Monday, but I was leaving town for work and worried I might lose my chance. Howard kindly promised to hold it for me until I returned. When I came back, I hoped he had kept his word,and he had. There it was, waiting for me: the gorgeous Victorian mirror I'd dreamed of all my life. Not only did he keep his promise, but he also gave me a generous discount, saying that the mirror was meant to be mine. They delivered it to my second-floor apartment with great care and professionalism. It wasn't even new stock, it was the floor display model that had been running in the store. They unplugged it, let it cool down, and handed me that one. When I got home and checked online, the exact same lamp sells for $39.99 on the official lavalamp.com website, brand new and in stock. So I paid double the official price for a used display unit. I get that small stores need to make a margin, but this is unreasonable. Check prices online before you buy here.

We walked around for 20 minutes before we saw a staff member, and that was after diligently looking for them. And it's the kind of place that tells you the prices, but not the full price. Let me explain. "how much is that table?" "that's 10" "$10,000?" "yes" "how much is that lamp?" "that's 5" Etc Some of the stuff is ok, but most of it is really routine stuff abroad. If you've traveled anywhere, you can see the resemblance to things 1/3 the price, or less in Europe or Asia. If you have taste, keep looking.
