I was able to find something for my daughter who is 9 years old btw and into thrifting as well. The staff there were very helpful and friendly - which you don't find often at a thrift/vintage shop. When I paid by credit card, I was asked for ID and told that "credit card thefts are very common here." I have lived in the U.S. for years and never get asked for ID for ordinary retail purchases, so in the context of being watched throughout the store, this felt like racial profiling rather than a neutral store policy. What made the experience especially upsetting was the contrast between the store's self-presentation and how I was treated. This is a vintage/counterculture-looking space in San Francisco, with a sign at the entrance advertising itself as the city's "No. 1" vintage store, yet I was made to feel like a risk object rather than a customer. I did not feel welcome or trusted as a non-white customer, and I would not feel comfortable returning.
